A very warm welcome to the Spring Edition of the Event Brochure. I do hope that 2022 will be a positive, optimistic year, full of opportunities for you to explore the Gardens and participate in the many events, activities, exhibitions and workshops that we have in store for the months ahead.

Spring is a rejuvenating season, a time of promise as we head towards longer, lighter days and warmer weather. There is so much to discover in the Gardens at this time of year, most notably in Spring Walk East & West, Magnolia Avenue, Himalayan Valley and Rhododendron Woodland (Brentry), all places to wander and explore and stimulate the senses.

Together with nature’s creativity, 2022 is a notable and wonderful year for the country as Her Majesty The Queen celebrates her Platinum Jubilee.

ABOUT THE GARDENS The magnificent 180 acre Sir Harold Hillier Gardens is world famous for its arboretum and gardens.

Open all year, the Gardens offers beauty and inspiration throughout the seasons.

Outstanding attractions include: the iconic 250m long double summer border, Pond, Bog Garden and one of the largest Winter Gardens in Europe.

Established by the distinguished plantsman Sir Harold Hillier in 1953, it is home to 14 National Collections, over 600 Champion Trees and 42,000 plants from temperate regions. It is one of the most important modern plant collections in the world.

Sir Haro ld Hillie The Gardens were left r under the sole trusteeship of Hampshire County Council in 1977. Run as a charity, the Gardens are continually developed to further Sir Harold’s philosophy of horticulture, conservation, education and recreation.

There is something different to see in the Gardens everyday. Whether it is the changing season or a new exhibition, trail or workshop there are always things to do for the whole family.

TEXTILE EXHIBITION

NEW YEAR’S DAY GUIDED TOUR

ZERO NINE

Saturday 1 January, 2pm

Friday 7 January – Sunday 23 January, 10am – 4pm*

After all the festivities, take time out to relax and get some fresh air in the beautiful Gardens. Our horticultural expert will take you on a tour that will last approx. 1 hour showing off the stem colour, foliage and hardy winter shrubs. The tour will highlight the Winter Garden and beyond.

We welcome back this talented group of local Textile Artists. Much admired at previous exhibitions here at Sir Harold Hillier Gardens.

JANUARY ART COURSE

THE SECRET LIFE OF PLANTS Sundays 23 January – Sunday 12 June, 10am – 4pm Improve your botanical illustration and gardening knowledge with 6 fun exploratory workshops. Follow the story of plant life through the seasonal cycle and study the forms and functions of plant parts. Drawing plants with botanical precision sharpens observation of flower and habit features, deepening plant understanding and easing identification.

SYLLABUS: Week 1, 23 January Fruits, seeds, nuts and seed dispersal Week 2, 20 February Winter twigs and stem structures

Each workshop (except the first) starts with a review of home studies. We share what we have discovered in our own lines of interest. After coffee there is a presentation on the subject for the week, with live examples, discussions and microscope observations. After lunch the group gets down to some serious drawing and painting of their chosen specimen. Your tutor Sally Pinhey MSc, FLS, SGM, FCPGFS. will give individual attention during this time, concluding with the individual home study projects for the month ahead.

BUILDINGS IN THE LANDSCAPES

PAINTING WITH YARNS

Sunday 13 March, 10am – 4pm

Saturday 5 March, 10am – 4pm

In this course with Paul Robinson we will be exploring how some lovely buildings are set into their own landscape and how the landscape accentuates and helps each particular building in your painting.

Using a simple frame loom (which you can keep) and colourful yarns, learn to weave a “notebook” of traditional and 3D tapestry techniques.

We will explore both traditional and 3D skills. At the end of the day, you will have the skills needed to work on your own projects

So, we shall be painting not only on testing buildings but sea, sky, trees and foliage to help the completion of your own masterpiece.

All equipment including yarns, will be provided.

A woven tapestry workshop suitable for beginners and those with some experience.

A wide variety of media is displayed including watercolour, oils, acrylic, mixed media, collage, charcoal and line drawing and various types of print making. Three-dimensional work is well represented by ceramics, sculpture, jewellery, glass, metal work and textiles.

Join local artist Lynne Reeves for a day exploring the use of collage and Mixed Media. Well known for her collage paintings Lynne will enable you to create and develop your own style using collage and a variety of textures and techniques.

A day exploring how colour is the most exciting aspect of painting. Learn the basic understanding of colour and its three components- Hue, Saturation and Value.

Leave all your responsibilities behind for 3 hours of guided meditation, mindfulness and connection to the natural world. As the mind quietens and the body slows down, heart rate, anxiety and stress levels drop, and a state of deep relaxation is reached.

Using colour temperature Lynne will enable you to create your own expressive Landscape Painting

The event will go ahead in most weather and is facilitated by an experienced and qualified mindfulness and Forest Bathing guide.

CAPTURING GLORIOUS LIGHT ON WATER Saturday 26 March, 10am – 4pm Learn several ways of painting “light on water” with Wendy Jelbert. We will try 2 Step-by-steps with the back lighting streaming onto a Venice Canal Building, and the other on a Beach Scene with lapping waves. There will be help with colours essential to the scene and how to mix them, appreciating tonal values, and understanding how to develop some exciting effects with photography and sketches that excite you.

INSPIRED BY NATURE Tuesday 5 April – Tuesday 3 May, 10am – 5pm* Stunning annual exhibition from Daphne Ellman SWA, Carolyne Viney BA Hons and Aylsa Williams printmaker joins the group.

The group are Inspired by Nature, encompassing diverse genres, differing surfaces and daily demonstrations which

combine to create a truly distinctive, and not to be missed exhibition.

Daphne’s love of British wildlife combined with the power of the natural world and its elements utilised

by Carolyne, combine to create an exhibition with over 70 contemporary works including watercolour, acrylic, oil and mixed media on canvas and aluminium for you to enjoy. *exhibition closes at 3pm on the last day.

Join us at our purpose-built trench in the woods to get muddy and find hidden treasures from ages past. Be a detective and analyse your artefacts find out what they are and what they were used for.

Learn about Roman life in more detail through a variety of hands-on activities in the woods and around a fire.

Many artists, have at one time or another, experienced problems with the construction of their boats and angles!

Wendy Jelbert will help you in 4 stages, tackling all the difficulties leading to a successful outcome, with this Cornish Scene…. the source of the sunlight, the shadow shapes, how to paint the distance, with reflections and colour mixing.

Although this is a rather complicated picture, helping you at every stage, but well on the way to successfully giving you the skills needed for painting a similar image by yourself.

A day creating two eye-catching willow projects a dragonfly and sunflower.

The large sunflowers, on a solid stake, looks lovely placed in plant pots on the patio. The 3D dragonflies have a flexible stake which allows them to bob about in the breeze; a stunning addition to a pond-side setting. Depending on your speed of working you will be able to make one or two of each of these during the day.

This workshop is suitable for beginners, but a certain amount of manual strength and dexterity is required.
