180 acres of garden paradise Established by the distinguished plantsman, Sir Harold Hillier in 1953, the Gardens currently hold one of the world’s most important plant collections.

Beauty and Inspiration Every year, hundreds of plants from around the world are added to enhance the collection.

• A magnificent collection of over 42,000 plants from temperate regions • 14 National Plant Collections and over 440 champion trees

The Gardens were left under the sole trusteeship of Hampshire County Council.

Run as a charity, the Gardens are continually developed to further Sir Harold’s philosophy of horticulture, conservation, education and recreation.

Children in the Gardens Children love exploring and playing in our fantastic tree house with slide and climbing wall. They enjoy relaxing on the flying carpet swing and running along the wobbly bridge. Not forgetting discovering wildlife in our ponds at the Education Garden.

Jermyn’s House

Our tea rooms are located in the secluded setting of our beautiful manor house. Open most of the year (subject to private functions). Light refreshments and hot and cold lunches are available in this unique dining experience.

Look out for our new addition to the Gardens. The Munch Buggy is a purpose built electric vehicle (with zero emissions) able to offer hot and cold beverages, ice creams and other snacks to you out in the Gardens.

Zero Nine Textile Exhibition Thursday 23 July Tuesday 25 August, 10am - 5pm

There will be an opportunity to purchase unique works of textile art, cards and other items.

Zero Nine Textile Artists is a group of nine local textile artists, from Hampshire and Wiltshire.

The group enjoy experimenting with textiles and the Gardens have provided inspiration for some of the pieces on show. The textiles on display will demonstrate the artists’ individual and varied styles and methods woven, felted, dyed, painted, printed, embroidered wall hangings, framed pieces, book covers, wearable art, and more.

Yoga in the Gardens (6 week course)

Taught by Mala Williams, a member of NAFAS and gold medal winner at Chelsea Flower Show.

The day will commence with a floral demonstration of what you will produce, followed with step by step instructions.

Flowers, plant material and a container will be provided.

You will learn new skills and will be able to take home a lovely floral design.

Price - £50p/p including refreshments, lunch and all materials.

Relax and unwind by learning yoga outside in the tranquil Gardens with Carolyn Ryan (qualified Iyengar yoga teacher).Suitable for beginners, you learn the basic standing, sitting and recuperative poses. Those with experience are welcome and will benefit by working at a deeper level in the poses.

August Felt Making Workshop Saturday 15 August, 10am - 4pm Felt making is an extremely versatile technique; in this workshop you will briefly explore the ancient history of felt making and different skills. Choose from the techniques to create special felt pieces from Merino wool fibres. This could be a small 3D flower, a paper weight or simply make a beautiful piece that could be wall hung.

October The Whole of the Deer Sunday 18 October, 10am - 4pm Participants will have the opportunity to skin a shared deer, stretch the skin for tanning and start the fleshing process. We will deliver a butchery masterclass for the whole animal before participants butcher the deer themselves whilst learning to identify and prepare the individual cuts of the meat.

We will then cook some of the different joints that day using a variety of cooking methods including hot smoking.

Herbaceous colour in the Centenary Border

At the mid-way point a new oak pavilion has been recently completed which offers lovely views, sit back and enjoy the variety of height, shapes and colours on display.

Don’t miss the Eryngium ‘Sapphire Blue’ also known as a Sea Holly. It has one of largest single flowers in the group; watch them get bluer and bluer as the weeks pass.

The Pond

The Pond area makes a lovely peaceful place to sit and relax during a walk. Only once has the Pond dried out which was in the great drought of 1976. The moist soil Bog Garden around the Pond and Bog Garden is perfect for the lush foliage on the banks, mixed with herbaceous perennials such as the enormous Gunnera maicata.

Look out for Nymphea ‘Texas Dawn’ water lily in the middle of the pond. It is a lovely pale yellow flower with a hint of blush pink at the base and lemon scent. Water lilies need plenty of sunshine to open up and dormancy begins in September/October.

Heather Garden

In front of Jermyn’s House you can find the secluded ornamental area planted with many Heather varieties, shrubs and trees provide year round interest. The Himalayan Birches here have white, pink and even chocolate coloured bark.

Unusual Ginkgo cultivars display their butter yellow autumn colour. Also look out for the Ginkgo biloba ‘Autumn Gold’ close to the Pond in October.

Autumn Colour

Subject to the season autumn colour varies from year to year but tends to start from the end of September onwards. Pocketed highlights appear across the garden, Liquidambars and Nyssa trees always look superb in Ten Acres East. The Pond area also looks lovely with the Taxodium trees and their autumnal tones of bronze/yellow. Don’t miss this Cercidiphyllum Katsura tree, at autumn time this unique tree produces delicate candy floss smell as the leaves start to drop.

Autumn fruits, berries and autumn colour

This is a great time to view fruiting Crab apples, Hawthorns, Hollies and Sorbus.

The autumn colours continue across the Gardens, Enkianthus perulatus is particularly good with striking rich crimson colour located not far from the Gurkha Memorial.Look out for out for Magnolia ‘Big Dude’ and Magnolia ‘Athene’ with its curious alien like fruits on the Centenary Border

Winter Garden

The Winter Garden is almost 4 acres in total, new plantings focus on a mixture of bark, bold coloured stems, scent and foliage. The Witch Hazels are attractive in January with their beautiful scent and spidery flowers in shades of red, yellow and orange. It’s also a time of year when scent from winter flowering shrubs catch you unawares. Daphne, Lonicera, Sarcococca and Chimonanthus never fail to deliver their fragrant treats. Stem colour is an additional bonus and it’s a good time to see red stemmed Dogwoods or powder white Rubus set against grasses, evergreen shrubs and mixed birch trees.
