The Gardens were left under the sole trusteeship of Hampshire County Council in 1977. Run as a charity, the Gardens are continually developed to further Sir Harold’s philosophy of horticulture, conservation, education and recreation.

Our horticultural expert will take you on a tour that will last approx. 1 hour showing off the stem colour, foliage and hardy winter shrubs. The tour will highlight the Winter Garden and beyond. Each workshop (except the first) starts with a review of home studies. We share what we have discovered in our own lines of interest. After coffee there is a presentation on the subject for the week, with living examples, discussions and microscope observations. After lunch the group gets down to some serious drawing and painting of their chosen specimen. Your tutors Sally Pinhey and Margaret Tebbs will give individual attention during this time, concluding with the individual home study projects for the month ahead.

Follow the story of plant life through the seasonal cycle and study the forms and functions of plant parts. Held in the beautiful setting of Jermyn’s House, enjoy a home cooked breakfast including juice, cereals, toast and tea or coffee. After breakfast we will lead you on an exclusive seasonal garden tour showing you the very best of our winter highlights before we open to the public. You will receive free entry to the Gardens for the rest of the day.

Last year we spotted over 30 species including; mistle thrushes, redwings and woodpeckers. Help us compile a Birdwatch survey using the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch sheets. The results will be recorded on our Facebook page and available to view at the Gardens. FREE with garden admission

During the February Half Term Holiday the Ofsted registered Outdoor Learning Company, will be holding an outdoor adventure holiday club in the Gardens.

Monday 12 February, 10am – 12.30pm or 1.30pm – 4pm

Highly skilled and friendly instructors can help you* reach new heights within an oak tree’s canopy using ropes, knots and karabiners, while being securely attached in a harness at all times. Children must be accompanied by an adult into the Gardens.

With a Forest School ethos, activities range from; den building, bug hunting, to tool work (using bow saws, knives, loppers etc), and much much more. Join us at our purpose built trench in the woods to get muddy and find hidden treasures from ages past. Be a detective and analyse your artefacts, find out what they are and what they were used for. Learn about Stone Age life in a carousel of activities: use a bow drill, cook a Stone Age snack, do some cave painting and weave a mini fence. Please note this is a repeat of our Stone Age Family Activity Day so more suitable for first-timers.
