Welcome The magnificent 180 acre Sir Harold Hillier Gardens is world famous for its arboretum and gardens.

Open all year, the Gardens offers beauty and inspiration throughout the seasons. Outstanding attractions include: the iconic 250m long double summer border, Pond, Bog Garden and one of the largest Winter Gardens in Europe.

Established by the distinguished plantsman Sir Harold Hillier in 1953, it is home to 14 National Collections, over 400 Champion Trees and 42,000 plants from temperate regions. It is one of the most important modern plant collections in the world.

There is something different to see in the Gardens everyday. Whether it is the changing season or a new exhibition, trail or workshop there are always things to do for the whole family.

HISTORY The Gardens were left under the sole trusteeship of Hampshire County Council in 1977. Run as a charity, the Gardens are continually developing to further Sir Harold’s philosophy of horticulture, conservation, education and recreation.

Demfest 2018

Sunday 8 July, 11am – 4pm

Demfest returns to the Gardens for a fourth year. This unique festival embraces dementia awareness. The day will feature inspirational and innovative ideas including educational and research speakers. Join in with the activities whilst being entertained by talented musicians. Last year people attended from all over Hampshire - those with dementia, their carers and family, health professionals and those expressing an interest.

A great day out which, this year, will be bigger and equally inspiring.

YOGA IN THE GARDENS Mondays 16, 23, 30 July and 6, 13 & 20 August, 6.30pm - 7.45pm Stretch your body and calm your mind through yoga taught outside in the tranquil Gardens by Carolyn Ryan (qualified Iyengar yoga teacher).

Suitable for beginners, you will learn the basic standing, sitting and recuperative poses. Those with experience are welcome and will benefit by working at a deeper level in the poses.

Over the 6 weeks you will gradually increase your stamina and notice an improvement in your flexibility.

Don’t forget to bring your yoga mat. Minimum age of 16 years.

FLOWER FAIRIES Summer Trail Thursday 19 July – Monday 3 September We have some new arrivals to the Gardens this summer! The Flower Fairies have recently made the Gardens their home and we can’t wait for you to meet them.

From July to September, come along and see how many fairies you can find.

You might even find our magical fairy grotto if you wish hard enough! Suitable for fairy lovers of all ages, this beautiful trail is a must visit this summer.

Join us in the woods and be creative with nature! Use natural items to make a piece of jewellery to take home. Find out how charcoal is made and use it to create your own charcoal “pencil”.

Friday 3 August, 10am – 4pm Tours: 11am, 12noon, 2pm and 3pm Last admission: 3.30pm (for craft activities and butterfly games) A fun day of butterfly themed activities run in conjunction with Butterfly Conservation and timed to coincide with the peak of butterfly activity.

The day includes a number of guided walks along Centenary Border looking at butterflies and the plants which attract these delightful insects. There will also be butterfly themed craft activities and games designed for children throughout the day.

Donations from this event will be used by the Education Service to support our work with families and children and the Butterfly Conservation. No need to book.

ARCHAEOLOGY FAMILY ACTIVITY - ROMANS Monday 13 August, 1.30pm- 4pm Join us at our purpose built trench in the woods to get muddy and find hidden treasures from ages past. Be a detective and analyse your artefacts, find out what they are and what they were used for.

Learn about Roman life in a carousel of activities; use fire strikers to make sparks, write Roman numerals in clay and cook Roman apple snacks on the fire. Suitable for ages 4-12 years.

Family Summer's End Picnic with Fireworks Saturday 25 August Concert 7pm – 9.15pm approx.

Celebrate the end of the summer with the talented 75 piece orchestra and singers, Pops Incorporated UK and Big Band. They will be performing well known hits for the whole family, taking inspiration from West End shows, films and a good helping of contemporary music

for you to dance and sing along to.

This open air picnic concert concludes with a spectacular firework finale.

A brilliant family evening out with free children’s entertainment, circus skills and pond dipping all set in the beautiful Gardens. Face painting will also be available at an extra charge.

Gates open at 6pm for you to enjoy your picnics.

The Restaurant and Munch Buggy will be also selling refreshments and snacks on the night.
