President's Message Oy! What a Year! In a normal year we would all be gathering for our annual fundraiser. Something I look forward to all year and really enjoy. Seeing my friends, socializing, having fun, and supporting an organization I love dearly is always a highlight of my year. However, I don’t have to tell any of you that this has not been anywhere near a normal year. We were all fortunate that we had last year’s L’Dor V’Dor early in the year so that we were able to gather in person for our annual event. Since then we’ve all suffered through the “new normal” of lockdowns, closed businesses, mask requirements, and the isolation and fear caused by the pandemic. What hasn’t changed, except to possibly worsen, is the anti-Semitism our students, and even community members, must deal with on a daily basis. Hillel stands up for our Jewish students when campus hate groups target them simply for being Jewish. Every year, the staff and volunteers are here to give our students a much-needed safe space, a place to learn Jewish practices, and a “home” to just hang out in. This year we’ve had to be just a bit more creative. While the methods we’ve used have changed because of the pandemic, Hillel of Silicon Valley has continued to offer programming and support for our students using technology. We’ve had online social events, Shabbat dinners delivered to students, and even a few in-person events with social distancing; keeping our students engaged while keeping them safe. Our Executive Director, Sarita Bronstein, and her staff have gone above and beyond to keep Hillel of Silicon Valley healthy and functioning during the crisis. They applied for, and received, several grants that were used to pay salaries so no staff member was laid off, and they came up with creative, safe ways to offer programming and services, all while working online from their homes. While Sarita and her staff are always there for our students, they could not do it without the support of our community volunteers. Barbara Green and Dan Pitt have served our Hillel in many capacities. We are blessed to have them and thank them for everything they’ve done. We also couldn’t do what we do without our student volunteers, and Ron Levy has been one of our best. Mazel tov to Barbara, Dan, and Ron on their well-deserved honors! May you all stay safe and healthy, and next year… in person! Todah Rabah,

Carrie Zeidman, Board President Hillel of Silicon Valley

Welcome to L'Dor V'Dor 2021!! It is with great privilege that I welcome you to Hillel of Silicon Valley's L'Dor V'dor (From Generation to Generation) Community Awards Ceremony. L'Dor V'Dor allows us to come together to pay tribute to members of our community and student leaders who have significantly contributed to our success. Each in their way has enriched our programs and helped to further our mission. We offer our deepest thanks to the honorees for their devotion, support, and guidance.

team will continue to weather the storm with resolve and dedication in accomplishing our mission! I am proud of what we have achieved even under the most unfortunate and dark cloud we are all experiencing! During these difficult months, your trust and support have given us the strength to look straight ahead and stay the course. You, our community, mean everything to us. Without your continuous and generous support, none of this would be possible! We would not have the resources we need to fulfill our crucial mission. We would be unable to provide programs that are free of charge to our students. Thanks to you, we can stand together for our students in these challenging times so their future will include Jewish life and Israel. Thank you for your gifts of resources and spirit and for being here today.

While we would prefer to be together as in previous years, celebrating online gives us the opportunity to greet people from across the country who would not have been able to participate if it had been an in-person gathering. We are thrilled to introduce our Hillel to first-time attendees and glad to greet back our loyal community of supporters.

The future of the Jewish community depends on what we all do now. Together, we will deliver a strong Jewish future!

March 16, 2020 started much like any other Monday, but it turned out to be the first day of the mandatory shelter-in-place order. Reluctantly, we packed up and went home. From that moment on, our team switched gears and has diligently worked to keep our students engaged with Hillel, Jewish life, and each other. It has not been easy, but we have turned each challenge into an opportunity to do things in a new and innovative way. Like everyone else, we had to adjust to the new daily reality. We have only been able to host a handful of events in person, but that did not stop us from seeing and talking with our students through virtual means. I am delighted to share that at a time of great uncertainty, our Hillel has remained the center of Jewish life for college students in our community and the virtual address where students come together to be a community where friendships are formed and develop.

Sarita Bronstein Executive Director

ABOUT HILLEL Hillel of Silicon Valley is more than a house, it’s a warm and welcoming home for the Jewish students of De Anza College, Foothill College, Santa Clara University, San Jose State University, and West Valley College. Whether they are rejoicing in their Jewish identity, rediscovering it, or reinventing it, Hillel is here to support them on their journey of learning, repairing the world, and connecting with Israel. Hillel’s quality programs create an opportunity for students to explore the social, cultural, educational, and religious tapestries of Judaism and Israel. Hillel supports and inspires students to develop a connection and love for Israel.

It has been more critical than ever before to take a holistic approach to our student engagement. We care about each student's well-being, intellectual curiosity, zest for Jewish life, and need for belonging. We offer students a safe refuge when they need one and where they feel heard, comforted, and less isolated.

Hillel of Silicon Valley has been a community away from home for many students over the years. Whether for Shabbat dinners or Holiday celebrations, a quiet place to study or do laundry, our door is always open. And while we have much to offer the students, we recognize the fact that students have much to offer us.

While we look forward to the day in which we will come together in person again, Hillel of Silicon Valley's 4

OUR 2021 COMMUNITY HONOREES

BARBARA GREEN Barbara was born in Chicago, the daughter of a career Air Force officer and his British bride. For the majority of her childhood, she moved throughout the U.S. and Europe and finally settled in San Jose.

Anita soliciting hosts for the weekly Shabbat dinners as well as cooking meals for our hungry students until COVID hit. An added volunteer incentive was the fact that Barb’s stepgrandson, Joshua, attended SJSU for the last four years. Barb hopes that students will soon be able to return to campus and participate in all of the Hillel activities. She especially misses schmoozing with the students during Shabbat dinners.

Barb’s first introduction to Hillel was during her college years at San Jose State University (SJSU) where the Jewish students met at the Catholic Newman Center. Her parents used to invite Hillel students home for Shabbat dinners. Barb was very active throughout her student years and was the recipient of The Woman of the Year award for her outstanding contribution to Hillel.

Barb is a busy retiree! She is on the Congregation Beth David Board serving as program chairperson as well as volunteering for several other synagogue committees. She considers having an adult B’nei Mitzvah and reading Torah as one of her greatest achievements. She is also involved with PJ Library, a Jewish non-profit literacy program for Jewish families with young children. Barb is also a volunteer for Assistance League of San Jose which is a non-profit organization whose programs are designed to serve the needs in the community. For the past few years, Barbara has been on the "Helen Diller Family Award for Excellence in Jewish Education" committee. She’s following in the footsteps of her parents who also modeled tikkun olam.

After her junior year at SJSU, Barb was accepted to the Institute for Youth Leaders from Abroad in Jerusalem. She decided to stay an extra year with the Sherut La’am program where she taught ESL to immigrant teenagers at Kibbutz Nitzanim. It was during this two year stay that Barb met and married Arye.

Barb has been married to Arye for 52 years and has two adult children, Yael and Daniel. Barb is step-grandmother to Joshua, Daniel and Jacob Gendein. Barb and Arye love traveling, exploring the world, and meeting new people. Their favorite and most memorable trips are with their family.

After returning from Israel, Barb completed her BA and Elementary Teaching Credential. She taught K-5 for 39 years in San Jose Unified School District. Barb reconnected with Hillel several years ago where she served on the Hillel Board of Directors and has actively participated on the L'Dor V'Dor committee ever since then. Recently, Barb was very busy with

DAN PITT Dan and Claudia moved to Palo Alto with their two small children Miriam and Julian in 1992 and have been members of Congregation Beth Am ever since. In 2002 Dan took a break from industry and spent five years as dean of engineering at Santa Clara University, where he became faculty advisor to the Jewish Student Union, partnered with Hillel of Silicon Valley (HSV) to help the Jewish students through some difficult times, and joined the HSV board. When he left the university he left the board but missed it so much he rejoined five years ago, serving as president from 2018-2020 and as board secretary from 2018 to the present. Dan considers it an honor to serve HSV and to help cultivate the next generation of American Jewry.

Dan Pitt is a computer scientist working in telecommunications and a lifelong active practitioner of Reform Judaism. Dan grew up at Temple Beth El in Madison, Wisconsin, and Temple Sinai in Brookline, Mass. The liturgical music bonded him strongly to services and throughout high school he sang in the synagogue’s youth choir every Shabbat morning and was active in NFTY. He and violinist Claudia Bloom were married at Judea Reform Congregation in Durham, N.C., where he was vice president and a lay cantor. For two years they were members of Or Chadasch, the liberal Gemeinde in Zurich, Switzerland, the second year of which Dan served as the cantor. 6

OUR 2021 STUDENT HONOREE

RON LEVY SAN JOSE STATE UNIVERSITY Ron Levy, 21, is currently a junior at San Jose State University majoring in Economics. He currently serves as the President of Students Supporting Israel on his campus along with being a StandWithUs Emerson Fellow, IAC Mishelanu Ambassador Fellow and Gift Of Life Campus Ambassador.

his freshman year, Levy served as the Vice President of Communications for the 66th board of Central Region West BBYO. This inspired him to continue to empower himself as a Jewish leader very well into his collegiate career to this day. As a leader during these times, Ron does not want to impress people but rather to impress upon people on how to create relationships and dialogue during a time where it may not necessarily be a walk in the park and to have that opportunity with HSV makes him truly grateful and blessed for what he has and hopes to make his time remaining memorable.

Although he wears many hats, from his first Shabbat and on Ron has been very fond of the community and the friendships he has made during his time with Hillel of Silicon Valley (HSV). The previous year before starting

Hillel of Silicon Valley Shifts Gears to Provide Programming and Engage Students During the Pandemic The Coronavirus pandemic has challenged us like never before. Despite challenges imposed by social-distancing restrictions, Hillel of Silicon Valley continues to find ways to support our students virtually. Through trial and error, we have been exploring alternate ways to connect them to Jewish life and Israel. The following are highlights of our achievements and challenges for the year:

Responding to Social Distance One of the first tasks we undertook when it became apparent that we would not be conducting business as usual was to create a list of resources for our students. This list included everything from sources of food for those students who experience food insecurity, to sources for mental health counseling, Jewish and Israel educational programs, volunteer opportunities, and other helpful campus and community resources. Because our programming has been exclusively through virtual media during the pandemic, our staff has had more time to further develop their relationships with existing students and establish new ones with prospective students. To make sure that students feel less alone, we organized coffee conversations and get-togethers over platforms such as Zoom and Google Hangouts. We have also found ways to entertain and teach students through fun and interactive social media posts, trivia quizzes and competitions. We created successful online programming to celebrate and observe the Jewish holidays such as Passover and the High Holy Days, and to commemorate Yom HaShoah, Yom HaZikaron, and Yom HaAtzmaut. We called upon the unique talents of our program staff to offer cooking sessions on how to make food such as hummus, challah and mufletas (the Moroccan Jewish treat eaten at the Mimouna celebration after Passover ends). Our Students Supporting Israel (SSI) club leaders joined with other SSI chapters around the country to create messages of support to first responders and health care providers.

Programming Shabbat Our successful Shabbat dinner program was significantly impacted by stayat-home restrictions. While we have attempted to engage students virtually each Friday with candle lighting, blessings, and songs, this could never compare to the impact of in-person gatherings. We have explored various gathering times and added an Oneg Shabbat Social Hour for students at a later Friday night time slot. We offered Shabbat-to-Go meals at least monthly. Students picked up pre-packaged catered meals from Hillel staff at various locations throughout the South Bay. In addition to muchenjoyed meals, we have provided students with “Shabbags-- Shabbat kits filled with candles, challah cover, homemade challah rolls, grape juice, and a sheet of Shabbat blessings.

Jewish Holiday Programming Celebration of Jewish and Israel holidays continue to be an emphasis of our programming. For example, for the High Holy Days this year we offered a virtual Rosh HaShanah seder and a student-led discussion. Students received a Rosh HaShanah kit filled with apples and honey, chocolate-covered pomegranate seeds, dates, cheese, fish crackers (to symbolize the fish head), candles, grape juice and a haggadah to participate in the seder.

22

Seder participants also received an UberEats card to enjoy a festive holiday meal. When stay-at-home guidelines were relaxed for a short time, we found ways to offer small in-person gatherings. The first such attempt, “Reverse Tashlich,” involved removing human “sins” from the water by cleaning up a local lake, rather than the usual act of Tashlich (the custom of throwing our sins into the water between Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur.) For Sukkot, we were not able to build our own sukkah in the Hillel House backyard, so we brought a small group of students to a local synagogue to learn about the holiday from the congregation’s rabbi and enjoy a picnic dinner. To conclude Sukkot and celebrate Simchat Torah, we ventured to the Municipal Rose Garden in San Jose for a kosher sushi dinner and discussion. For Hanukkah, we offered nightly Hanukkah candle lightings via Zoom. Hanukkah Shabbat featured pre-packaged meals with latkes, of course, and a round of holiday Jeopardy. Later in the holiday, we hosted a virtual Hanukkah party featuring a “Who Dunnit” mystery game.

Israel Educational Programming We were able to invite donors and community members to join in several webinars that normally we would have offered just to students. These speakers included Hussein Aboubakr Mansour presenting “Minority of One: A Personal Story of Life in Egypt, Anti-Semitism, and Transformation.” Milan Chatterjee, a past student body president at UCLA spoke about his “Story of Standing Up to the BDS Movement.” Lt. Colonel Eyal Dror (Retired) gave a presentation called “Embrace the Enemy: A Story of Operation Good Neighbor,” about Israel’s humanitarian efforts to provide first aid to Syrian refugees. In August, we were honored to be able to feature a webinar with Matan Zamir, Deputy Consul General to Israel for the Pacific Northwest, who briefed our students and community members on current events in Israel including an update on the UAE-Israel peace agreement, Israel’s handling of the coronavirus and other topics. The SSI chapter at San Jose State University (SJSU) received an award from National SSI for Innovation for their virtual tabling effort. The SSI chapter at Foothill College received recognition for being the first SSI chapter at a community college to get their student government to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism. The well-regarded Israel Learning Fellowship (ILF) was one of our first successful virtual programs last spring. This seven-session program featured guest speakers to explore issues of Zionism, Israeli political realities, Israeli culture and the people, Palestinian-Israeli conflict, and Israel advocacy. We offered a series of programs to commemorate Mizrahi and Sephardi Week Activities virtually. With the support and partnership of the Consulate General of Israel and JIMENA (Jewish Refugees from Arab Countries and Iran), our Israel Fellow created an interactive exhibit about Sephardi and Mizrahi Jews viewed by over 350 people. We culminated our annual week-long celebration of Sephardi and Mizrahi culture by partnering with the virtual event hosted by the Consul Generals of Israel for the Pacific Northwest and Southwest.

Travel to Israel Unfortunately, our Birthright and Spartans2Israel trips were cancelled this past summer (Continued on page 24) 23

(Continued from page 23)

because of the pandemic. We have already scheduled tentative dates for summer of 2021. We will carry out full recruitment activities for Israel travel opportunities offered to college students in anticipation that it will be safe to travel again this summer. We have been giving students a taste of Israel using all means available to us, including social media posts, movies, videos, and virtual tours.

Civic Leadership In September and October, we offered informational sessions on the November election called “Cast an Informed Vote.” The sessions included information on the importance of voting, how to register, and local ballot measures and races of interest to students.

New Initiatives Book Club One of our most successful initiatives has been our newly established book club. Students learn from various authors about Israel’s history, culture, and its people. For the first book selection, the group explored Letters to My Palestinian Neighbor” over five sessions, culminating with a discussion featuring the author himself, Yossi Klein Halevi. We were very pleased to see how well students responded to this initiative.

Chugim (small group electives) During our exploration of how to best connect with students during the pandemic, we learned they will join for virtual programs when they know they will see their friends or when they are very interested in an activity. For these reasons, we introduced a series of

chugim, small group electives. Discussion on the weekly Torah portion, movie/game nights and Jewish/Israeli cooking were some of the activities. We also offered Isra-Talk, a bi-weekly conversation about the top headlines in Israel led by our Israel Fellow.

Karin-Dornfest Jewish Leadership Fellowship Due to the success of the Israel Learning Fellowship offered during the last two years, we launched another new initiative this fall--the Karin-Dornfest Jewish Leadership Fellowship. Our first cohort of eight students learned about Jewish leadership through text, expert speakers, and experiential exercises. Sessions were led by local and national Jewish educators, together with Hillel staff on topics such as models of Jewish leadership, confronting antisemitism, anti-Zionism and hate, pluralism/inclusion, use of social media, and how to plan a successful program. The program series concluded with the cohort creating various Jewish learning and tikkun olam projects for Hillel. 24

Interfaith Programming We established a new partnership with a coalition of interfaith and multicultural organizations including The Canterbury Bridge, SJSU’s Mosaic Cross Cultural Center, and SJSU’s Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), which together sponsored a discussion of the documentary “The Social Dilemma” in November. It was a great opportunity to discuss the changing ways people interact with each other, especially during the pandemic. Hillel of Silicon Valley, together with our student clubs, plan to utilize this new coalition for programs where interfaith coalitions are helpful. Another interfaith collaboration was established with Santa Clara University’s Interfaith Council, to present the story of a Holocaust survivor in observance of Kristallnacht.

Reestablishment of Student Leadership Board We re-established our Hillel Student Board, enabling students to create programs that meet the needs of students on all of the campuses we serve as well as to share ideas and best practices with each other.

Social Media Our staff has been creating podcasts to highlight student accomplishments and issues that our students are involved with. We continued to develop our social media presence to replace student outreach formerly done through tabling on campus as well as to educate students about Judaism and Israel. Hillel staff and students are using a variety of ways to teach about Jewish customs and holidays through social media. These methods included trivia quizzes, puzzles, surveys, photos and much more. We explored Rosh Hodesh, Lag BaOmer and the themes of the Hebrew months, the concept of pikuach nefesh (preservation of human life), honoring first responders, women in Jewish history, recognizing the anniversaries of Kristallnacht and the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin, etc. We have found these social media posts to be effective Jewish education programming.

Responding to Antisemitism An informative session was offered at the end of September in coordination with Foothill College’s Associated Students dealing with antisemitism and hate. Several members of Foothill’s student government attended and actively participated in the discussion. A significant development was the adoption of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism by the Student Government at Foothill College. Our student leader, who heads the Student Supporting Israel (SSI) Club at Foothill, presented the resolution to his peers. The resolution to adopt the definition of antisemitism passed in a unanimous vote of 28-0. Foothill College’s student government is the first in the Bay Area to pass and adopt the IHRA definition. Working closely with SSI National, and our student leadership, we hope to bring the same resolution to our other four campuses. To keep the story and lessons from the Holocaust alive, survivor (Continued on page 26 25

(Continued from page 25)

Gabriella Karin spoke to a group of Jewish and non-Jewish students, faculty and administrators at Santa Clara University (SCU). The Jewish Student Union and Students Supporting Israel Clubs at SCU, as well the SCU Interfaith Council, joined Hillel of Silicon Valley in sponsoring the event. Among the sessions offered to our Jewish Learning Fellowship students was a session to learn the origins and myths of antisemitism, how to recognize it, and how to combat it.

Challenges: Social Distancing and Zoom Fatigue The obvious and most dramatic challenge has been dealing with the social distancing and restrictions imposed because of the pandemic. Not being able to see students in person, celebrate Shabbat together, and welcome students to the Hillel House has been very difficult and challenging for all of us. In addition, keeping students engaged via Zoom is quite a task considering that students are experiencing “Zoom fatigue and are craving a return to in-person programming.

Identification of New Students Another difficulty is that since we are not able to be on campus, it is hard to identify new Jewish students. We have had to rely on word-of-mouth referrals and social media posts to find and recruit students to our programs and activities. We find that students new to our Hillel are less likely to want to participate in our events since it is unfamiliar to them. Unfortunately, we were not able to start to develop as close a relationship with new students as we always do at the start of the semester.
