JEWISH PROGRAMMING & COMMUNITY BUILDING

Last Summer, our three Summer barbecues were wellattended by incoming students, returning students and alumni from each of the campuses we serve.

In the Fall, we hosted Havdalah gatherings for new and returning Hillel students and their parents at San Jose State University (SJSU) and at Santa Clara University (SCU).

Our Welcome Week activities also included several social gatherings: a barbecue, ice cream social and a Happy Hour for students aged 21+. AEPi proudly hosted a Greek Shabbat at the fraternity house to culminate our Welcome Week events.

Hillel of Silicon Valley (Hillel SV) co-sponsored two events for the Jewish Law Student Association at Santa Clara University. The first was a session on “Maintaining a WorkLife Balance and Mental Health in the Legal Profession."

The second was a film screening and discussion about “Bogdan’s Journey," which confronts post-World War II antiSemitism following the 1946 pogrom in Kielce, Poland.

Our new women’s empowerment group, “Achoti” (which means “My Sister”) had discussions on strong women in the Torah, power of prayer, and Jewish values such as taking care of the environment.

Hillel SV held eight programs this year that featured rabbis from different denominations as well as Jewish educators.

Hillel staff assisted student leaders at Foothill College to plan programs for their Jewish Heritage Month. This year’s events included: Week of Welcome-Taste of Jewish Heritage Month College Hour with falafel and Jewish music Club Day: Learn to play dreidel, Birthright recruitment, falafel History of anti-Semitism in American Literature Krav Maga Documentary Film: “Holocaust Escape Tunnel” Closing Ceremony featuring a variety of Jewish foods

Hillel staff and students used a variety of ways to teach about Jewish customs and holidays through social media.

These methods included trivia quizzes, puzzles, surveys, photos and much more. We explored Rosh Hodesh, Lag Ba’omer and the themes of the Spring Hebrew months, the concept of Pikuach Nefesh (preservation of Jewish life), honoring first responders, women in Jewish history, etc. We found these social media posts to be effective Jewish education programming.

This spring, a group of students from Hillel SV and Santa Cruz Hillel met weekly to learn Yiddish together.

SHABBAT & HOLIDAY PROGRAMMING

With funding from the Jewish Federation of Silicon Valley, we built up our successful Partner Shabbat program where we invite other campus and community groups to join us for some of our well-received Shabbat dinners.

Our High Holy Day programming included a Rosh Hashanah party and Yom Kippur Break-the-Fast.

Our Sukkot programming included the building and decorating of our sukkah by AEPi pledges and Club Z members, a trivia session led by the Chabad Rabbi, and our annual board and student potluck in the Sukkah.

We celebrated Tu B’shevat with our annual Tu B’shevat seder while enjoying the fruits and nuts of the trees and learned how we can all be better at protecting our environment.

A virtual Passover seder, Passover trivia, and discussion on the themes of the holiday, all student-led, took the place of our regular Passover offerings this year. We celebrated several holidays, including Chanukah and Purim as part of our festive Shabbat gatherings.

ISRAEL PROGRAMMING Our annual Sephardi-Mizrahi Week celebration, held in the Fall, included a cooking demonstration of the Sephardic street food, arayes, a speaker from JIMENA on Jewish refugees from Arab countries at SJSU’s Mosaic CrossCultural Center, and a distribution of mufleta on campus.

An exhibit of history and culture of Mizrahi and Sephardi communities was displayed at the Mosaic Cross-Cultural Center during the entire week.

Our Israel Fellow brings love of cooking and baking to Hillel. He has expanded our popular Hump Day Hummus series into a bi-weekly exploration of Jewish street foods.

These informal cooking sessions give our Israel Fellow an opportunity to engage with students in meaningful conversations about Israel, teach a bit of Hebrew, and help create stronger connections to Israel, its people, culture and politics. Thus far, our students have enjoyed Hump Day Hummus, Hump Day Shakshuka, Boureka Bash, and Arayes Sephardic food.

In December, we partnered with the Veterans Student Organization at SJSU to show the film, “When the Smoke Clears” followed by a Question and Answer session with an Israeli Reservist Soldier.

For Israel Week celebrations during the week of Yom Ha’Atzmaut, we held a virtual Israel party with Israeli music, Israel trivia, and of course, food. We sent interested students a bag of goodies filled with Bazooka gum, falafel mix, an Israeli flag and more, so they could celebrate Yom

Ha' Atzmaut at home. We also provided students with UberEats cards so that they could order Israeli food to go from a local restaurant in order to talk about the variety of foods they had purchased and enjoy it together. Another session featured a cooking demonstration on how to make hummus, led by our Israel Fellow. We culminated Israel Week with a virtual Israel Kabbalat Shabbat filled with singing of Israeli songs and discussions on how Shabbat is observed in Israel.

One of the strategies used during the Shelter-In-Place restrictions was to post fun facts about Israel, its past leadership and about observances such as Yom Yerushalayim to engage students via Instagram.

ISRAEL ADVOCACY

In the Spring, ten students completed their participation in our Israel Learning Fellowship program featuring historians, political scientists, Israel Fellows, and Israel advocates who spoke with the student leaders on Zionism, Israeli history, current events and advocacy techniques. Because of the stay-at-home measures, we offered several of the sessions as webinars and offered the sessions to community members. The speakers and topics of those sessions were: “What's your Israel Story” “The History of Israel and the Conflict" “The Palestinian History and Narrative” “Israel Advocacy on Campus” “LGBTQ community in Israel” “Minority of One”- personal story of Hussein Aboubakr “Is Peace Possible Without a Handshake?”

Closing session- Israel 2048

In co-sponsorship with the Veterans Student Organization at SJSU, the Students Supporting Israel (SSI) group screened the movie: "When The Smoke Clears: A Story of Brotherhood, Resilience and Hope", which shows how a group of wounded Israeli soldiers discover renewed purpose and healing by giving to others.

On multiple occasions throughout the year, IDF Lt. Col. Eyal Dror (Res.) spoke to several classes at San Jose State University and at Foothill College, at Hillel, as well as part of an on-line webinar. The topic: Dror's command of Israel’s Operation Good Neighbor, an operation providing

humanitarian assistance to Syrian civilians, the victims of Syria's civil war.

In February, students raised money for Save A Child’s Heart by selling chocolate-covered strawberries on their campuses. Save A Child’s Heart is an Israeli-based international humanitarian charity, which provides lifesaving heart treatment and follow-up care for children from developing countries regardless of their religion, gender, or nationality.

ISRAEL TRIPS In July, 2019, a record 20 Hillel of Silicon Valley (Hillel SV) students participated in our Summer Birthright trip led by Hillel staff. A reunion for the 2019 Birthright participants, their staff, tour guide and the Mifgash (Israeli soldiers) was held in the middle of June.

In August, we brought an additional 18 San Jose State University (SJSU) student leaders (15 non-Jewish) to participate in our Spartans2Israel program. At the end of October, the students gathered for a reunion and discussed how they were using the information they learned in Israel on campus. A number of these students regularly attended Shabbat dinners and had become leaders in our (SSI) club.

SERVING STUDENTS DURING THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC ENGAGEMENT SINCE Obviously, in light of the coronavirus outbreak, Hillel of Silicon Valley has had to dramatically re-envision how it provides programming to and engages with our college students. Our

goal through this situation is to continue to support our Jewish college student community and to keep them engaged in Jewish life and Israel.

We moved our Jewish and Israel programming online. At the beginning of the restrictions, we were able to offer

meals to-go, including Shabbat dinners. As students moved off campus or back to their homes, this option became less possible.

Staff and student leaders continued to find ways to provide virtual programming and stay in touch. Each week, students were invited to a virtual candle-lighting session

over Zoom where we sang the traditional Shabbat blessings and Kabbalat Shabbat songs, which the students enjoy. To maintain a connection with our students and to make sure that our students do not feel alone during this time of social isolation, our staff regularly reached out to students.

We organized coffee conversations and get-togethers over platforms such as Zoom and Google Hangouts. We have also found ways to entertain and teach students through fun and interactive social media posts, trivia quizzes and competitions.

264 ONE -TO-ONE STAFF-TO-STUDENT INTERACTIONS OCCURRED

We created a list of resources for our students that included everything from sources of food for those students who experience food insecurity, to sources for mental counseling, Jewish and Israel educational programs, volunteer opportunities, and other helpful campus and community resources.

We created successful online programming to celebrate and observe holiday celebrations and commemorations such as Passover, Yom HaShoah, Yom HaZikaron and Yom Ha’Atzmaut.

We called upon the unique talents of our program staff to offer cooking sessions on how to make such items as hummus, challah and mufletas (the Moroccan Jewish treat which is used for the Mimouna celebration after Passover ends).

Our Students Supporting Israel club leaders joined with other SSI chapters around the country to create messages of support to first responders and health-care providers.
