ILLCREST SAPS arrested a 20year-old man for defeating the ends of justice last week after it was found that he falsely claimed to have been hijacked. He was charged with perjury last week. SAPS provincial spokesperson, Colonel Jay Naicker, said on 23 April the suspect allegedly made a false statement, under oath, after claiming he had been hijacked and robbed of his vehicle by police officers. “The suspect claimed he was driving with a friend along Kassier Road in Hillcrest when they saw blue lights flashing and were instructed by police officers to stop,” said Naicker. “He claimed he was stopped by six officers in uniform who were in a
marked police vehicle. He alleged that the officers robbed him of his VW Golf, cash, wristwatch, cellphone and a jacket. The following day he reported the incident to Hillcrest police.” Naicker said Hillcrest detectives were immediately assembled to investigate the allegations. “After a thorough investigation, police established that the suspect and his friend lied about the events of the evening,” said Naicker. “It was established that on 23 April at 10pm, the suspect was driving along Kassier Road with his friend when the Durban Metro Police instructed him to stop. He sped off because he had unpaid traffic fines and later abandoned his vehicle in Hillcrest.” His vehicle was impounded and kept in the custody of the Metro police. He was arrested and charged with defeating the ends of justice and perjury. TURN TO PAGE 3
