PPER Highway mum Hayley Wright has been hailed a heroine by the Kloof and Highway SPCA after she rescued a dog that was hit by three vehiclesandahugetruckalongthe M13 last week. Wright not only saved the dog, but also started a Facebook group raising funds to cover treatment costs and get the dog back to health. SPCA’s Lisa Gadd said that when Wright witnessed the acci-

dent she pulled over and got the frightened, injured female dog safely to the side of the road then rushed the dog to the Kloof and Highway SPCA where Dr. Yeshindra Govender attended to her. Gadd said the dog’s leg was badly broken and Govender was concerned about what internal problems she might have sustained. “She also had fluid on her lungs and bad bruising to her ribs,” said Gadd. The dog was stabilised and given medication and antibiotics.

“She could not lift her head when she came in on the Friday, but by Saturday morning she was much perkier,” Gadd said. Wright told Govender she would raise the funds for the dog’s operation and put up a Facebook post and a plea to help find her owners. “The post went viral. Soon the country was excited about Hope [which Hayley had named her]. Dr Evans from the Everton Veterinary Hospital X-rayed the dog, the results of which indicated there was a severe fracture to her hind right leg and that would need surgery, which was quite expensive,” Gadd said. “Supporters who had joined the Facebook page ‘Save Hope’, were asked to help raise funds for the dog’s operation. Help avoid blood shortage - SANBS AS the holiday break at the end of April approaches, one knows that traditionally this is a time when there are several road accidents, which adds to the daily demand for blood. It is also a time when blood collection is already difficult. The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) appeals to donors to make their way to one of the closest

more than 50 kg, and you lead a sexually-safe lifestyle, make your way to your nearest donor centre. A MAN accused of killing a teenager with a hammer had previously attempted to take his own life twice, the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court was told last week. It also emerged that there was a statement in the docket that said Siyanda Gift Ngubane had “heard voices that made him do what he did”, prosecutor Vikesh Sewnath told the court. Sewnath asked the court for the case to be postponed to allow Ngubane to undergo mental observation. It was then that Magistrate Vanitha Kisten questioned Ngubane’s mother, asking her if her son had received any previous treatment for mental illness. Through a translator she replied that he had not, but said her son had attempted to commit suicide twice. Ngubane handed himself into the Hillcrest police station last Wednesday. He then allegedly led officers to an unused manhole in the Embo Reserve when he allegedly told officers that the devil had made him do it. Kisten postponed the case to 14 April to allow Ngubane to be assessed by the district surgeon. It was not revealed in court who the deceased was or what his relationship with Ngubane was. - News24.

MIA Whitfield has been nominated a finalist in the Margaret Hirsch Woman in Business Achiever of the Year (Hillcrest) competition. Whitfield, accounts and event co-ordinator of Country Girls, the trio of singers who work as singing teachers by day and use their talent as singers at a variety of functions in the evening, was announced second finalist at a women's networking event at Hirsch Hillcrest recently. "It's wonderful to see dedicated and talented people like Whitfield winning this award, and we hope to see more talented local women enter the Margaret Hirsch Woman In Business Achiever of the Year competition, as we have seen how beneficial it can be for the individuals and their business," said Hirsch's national PR consultant, Glenda Thompson when she handed Whitfield her prize. Country Girls performed at the networking meeting, which was attended by a variety of business women. At the meeting emphasis was placed on health with Kandice Vardhan from Body Kan Do presenting a 10-minute pilates session, and integrated health practitioner Dr Hennie Palm talking about the importance of keeping your tummy healthy. He stressed the importance of eating organically grown food, pointing out that non-organic meat, eggs and milk contain antibiotics (to help with production) that play havoc with the "body's ecosystem". The morning ended with a talk by Estee Lauder's national make-up artist Siya Sikhakhane who spoke on make-up, and after the event demonstrated how to properly apply eye make-up. Foundation donates science training and kits >> Investing in educating the nation

S

IEMENS Stiftung – a German foundation investing in global education and teacher training, in partnership with Thomas More College in Kloof – donated science teacher-training courses and Experimento Science Kits to eight high schools in Inanda, Molweni and Pinetown. With Experimento, Siemens Stiftung has developed an international concept for teachers, which puts into practice the principle of discoverybased learning. Through experiments pupils engage independently with natural phenomena and learn to grasp technical and scientific inter-relations. Experimento encompasses a diverse, curriculum-orientated selection of experiments on the subjects of energy, the environment, and health - for age groups from four to 18. “Science education helps leverage a country’s future potential and ensures long-term social development. The sooner the necessary appreciation of science and technology is cultivated in young people, the better. “Experimento is unique in that teachers are fully trained in the use of the kits. Only after intensive training

by facilitators do they receive their kits,”saysRebeccaOttmannfromSiemens Stiftung. “The Experimento science kits initiative is one of the Siemens Stiftung educational projects being rolled out globally–withanextensivereachinto South Africa,” explains Rita Nkuhlu, Siemens executive director for business excellence. “We applaud the dedication and commitment shown by the teachers who have undergone the training process. Pupils will only develop an interest in science if they respond to the enthusiasm shown by their teachers. “The Experimento box is an integral teaching aid to the school, but it is the attitude, ability and skill of the teacherswhichiskeytofuellingapassion for science among pupils. “We are thrilled that these nine high schools have embraced the challenge,” said Nkuhlu. This handover wraps up a longterm commitment between Siemens and schools throughout eThekwini. Initially, specialists from Germany worked with carefullyidentified local facilitators (“multipliers”). The German trainers were in Durban in March 2013 teaching facilitators how to use the science kits. The multipliers have, in turn, trained the teachers in the selected schools and training on the 4+ and 8+ kits was concluded in 2013, while the

first training session for high-school teachers on the 10+ was in August 2014. The programme concludes this year. “Since 2011, this project has hosted 40 workshops, 180 Experimento science kits have been distributed, 320 teachers have been trained and about 33 400 pupils have been reached in South Africa,“ says Ottmann. “We chose eight schools in the Inanda, Molweni and Pinetown areas, some of the under-resourced regions in the eThekwini Municipality, and Thomas More College as the mentor institution. “Two of the chosen outreach schools have an ongoing relationship

with Thomas More College. We are very impressed by the dedication that teachers from these areas have shown. “They have given up their weekends to become familiar with Experimento and learn about the experiments which the kit contains,” says programme facilitator Kathryn Kure. “We are fortunate to have Thomas More College on board as our partner and it has allowed us to use its venue for the training. “We have been incredibly fortunate to have a number of dedicated trainers, including a retired headmaster with decades of teaching science at high schools, to undertake the

training process,” explains Kure. The final handover took place just before the Easter holidays, with representatives from Siemens, Thomas More College and the eight participating schools present. “Science and technology education is key to social well-being, democratic participation, opportunities and personal development. “We are excited that this significant project has been geographically far-reaching, hugely appreciated and has tangible impact,” says Ottmann. TOYOTAisrecalling261 114LexusandToyota brand vehicles in the US because varioussafetysystems, amongthemstability control and anti-lock brakes, could stop working. The automaker is recalling vehicles from model years 2012 and 2013 because documents filed with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration say an electrical component in the brake actuator which adjusts brake-fluid pressure to each wheel might experience increased resistance, That could lead to reduced vehicle

control and an increased risk of a crash as various safety systems, including traction control, become inoperative. US Toyota officials could not immediately be reached to comment. Included in the the recall are 54 010 LexusRX350crossoversand100 052Toyota Tacoma pick-ups (Hilux in South Africa) from model years 2012 and 2013 and 107 052 RAV4 SUV’s assembled in 2012. Not all of the recalled vehicles were sold in the U.S. - but Toyota SA says its products are sourced elsewhere than the U.S. so are not affected. Toyota also recalled all 1.9-million of the third-generation Prius sold worldwide due to a programming glitch in their hybrid system. - Wheels24. RAV4 escapes being recalled in South Africa. FEVER REPORTER

I

N among the thousands of riders lining up for the start of the 45km funrideattheaQuelléTourDurban, presented by the Sunday Tribune on Sunday 26 April, will be a group of passionate cyclists dressed in eye-catching cows suits, determined to raise awareness about and fund-raise for children suffering with cancer. "The cows" have become a distinctive feature of the aQuellé Tour Durban, and last year were cheered on by fellow riders and spectators as they completed the ride in their bovine attire. The cows project was started in 2008 by friends close to the family of one-year-old Jessica Bain, who died from cancer. Her parents, Kerrin and Grant, threw their weight behind a pilot fundraiser for the Childhood Cancer Foundation of South Africa (Choc) at the 94.7 Cycle Challenge in memory of their daughter. The project caught the imagination of race participants and the public and snowballed into a fundraiser and awareness drive for the fight against childhood cancer. Soon a passionate KwaZulu-Natal branch was formed, determined to use their desire to challenge themselves at a variety of sporting events to contribute towards the cancer fight. Pinetown businessman Gordon Reid has been involved with the cows for several years and this year is hoping to take the involvement of them to thenextlevel, andinvolveasmanynew riders as possible. "Our motto is simple - ‘Love Living Life’," says Reid.

Mother and daughter tandem riders Iris and Lauren Varty Hillcrest from in action for the Choc fundraiser with the legendary cows. "When it started at the 2008 94.7 the people involved tried to get matching costumes to ride in and all they could find was six cow suits. That's where the cows were born. "Itisopentoanyone,"heexplained. Reid said the KZN chapter, or the herd, of the cows is targeting R217 000 needed to refurbish the children's oncology facility at Grey's Hospital in Pietermaritzburg. "It is addictive," said Reid. "As part of our current KZN campaign we have just heard that an anonymous donor has, through their lawyer, made a R90 000 donation. “It is generosity like this that makes being part of the cows so special."

Race organisers have committed to allow a separate batch, made up entirely of cows, to start as the first batch of the 45km fun ride if 100 riders or more sign up for the cows. Since the founding ride in the 2008 94.7 the cows have raised over R21 million for Choc. The annual aQuellé Tour Durban is deeply connected to the Domino Foundation that benefits as the official race charity. It has welcomed the efforts of the cows as another tangible way this iconic sporting event can benefit the broader community. More information can be found at www.tourdurban.co.za
