L

os Olivos Market has been a popular destination since its grand opening in 2018. Rafael and Rebecca Varela, father and daughter team, purchased the shop —formerly as “Taste Buds” — because they are passionate about the Hill Country and what the store means to visitors and locals alike. The market retains all its original charms, now with its own unique flair. You can still sample Texas gourmet products and enjoy a wine tasting or relax with a craft brew, wine or a Winea-Rita, and now also indulge in shareable plates or lunch. Check out the Charcuterie Board, Smoked Duck Caesar Salad, Bruschetta, or Merguez Meatballs with Chimichurri sauce. Los Olivos also serves “sweet bites” – gelato or a Sugar Shack croissant sticky bun. The shop is an ideal destination for lunch or happy hour, with both indoor and outdoor seating. Los Olivos Market also offers their own private label of Texas gourmet foods, with around 150 products to choose, including glazes and jellies, dips, sauces, pickled products, olives, salsas, olive oils, plus nuts and chocolates. Fresh samples are served up daily, so you can taste before you buy. The newest product — Garlic Funk Sauce — can’t seem to stay on the shelves! And gourmet food products from local producers are also available — including Fredericksburg Farms, New Canaan Farms, Soberdough Brew Bread, Silverleaf International, Deep River Specialty Food, Fischer & Wieser, Classy Delites and San Saba River Pecan Company. “We’re passionate about the Texas Hill Country, good wine, and delicious food,” Rebecca smiles. “We started the business because we have seen first-hand the amazing growth in the central Texas area and wanted to share our experience. Phenomenal producers are being born here, SEE Los Olivos, page 9

and there is nothing else like the beauty of the Hill Country.” A generous selection of wines, complete with all the accessories you can imagine, plus local brews from Oasis Brewing Company, Rahr & Sons Brewing, Shiner, Real Ale, and 5 Stones Brewery and more are available at Los Olivos. The shop’s popular Wine-a-Ritas are available in four flavors. Try a sample to help you choose your favorite flavor, and purchase a koozie bottle to enjoy your drink while strolling the Wimberley Square. You can also select from your favorite gourmet foods, wines and more to create a beautiful gift basket to enjoy in your room or with your loved ones. The shop’s name “Los Olivos” came about naturally, in honor of Rebecca’s grandfather. “My grandfather was from Madrid, but a true Texan at heart. One of his favorite quotes was ‘You may all go to hell and I will go to Texas,’ by Davy Crockett,” she explains. “He lived on our ranch in Dripping Springs for eight years before he passed away. During this time, my aunt brought him two olive trees for the property, which he planted, giving us the idea of naming it Los Olivos Ranch. We immediately fell in love with the name and when we took over the store, we knew from the beginning what the name had to be.” Rafael and Rebecca have plans to open a second location by year’s end in Buda. “At our new location we’ll have around 300 varietals of wine and approximately 75 to 100 different kinds of craft beer, including 12 on tap,” Rafael explains. “We’ll also have our Wine-a-Ritas and retail, but we’re most excited about our full kitchen and a butcher shop.” The Buda location will be in the Buda Mill & Grain Co. on South Main Street. Los Olivos Market also hosts events with live music, food, and drinks. If you’re looking for a place to celebrate a birthday party, book club, or gather with friends, Los Olivos Market has a large table available to reserve. Rebecca smiles, “Come and relax and stay awhile.” Los Olivos Market is located on the Wimberley Square at 13904 Ranch Road 12 in Wimberley. Hours are Monday to Friday 11:30 am to 8 pm, Saturday 10:30 am to 8 pm, and Sunday noon to 7 pm. Providing a restorative experience...

The Herb Room BY COLLEEN BROOKS

A

re you weary from traveling or everyday stresses? In need of a little peace, away from the hustle and bustle? Then, check out The Herb Room, where you can grab a cup of tea and just unwind. Robyn Clark, botanist and herbalist, decided to open up shop on the Square in 2014 after noticing a need here in Wimberley. “I just knew this was where I was going to be and where I was going to spread the word of plants and all the benefits they have to offer,” she says. The Herb Room was so well received that in 2016 when the storefront next door became available, she decided to expand to include a tea bar. “Offering teas is another way to share the health virtues of herbs and to serve the community,” she smiles. THE HERB ROOM, from page 12 Stop by the Tea Bar where you can choose from more than 40 varieties of organic teas, including black, green and herbal options, which can be purchased by the ounce or by the cup, hot or iced. Some popular favorites include Duchess of Earl (Lavender and Lemon Earl Grey), Hibiscus Mint, Root Beer Tonic and Raspberry Green. Select teas are created in house and an interactive tea board provides the perfect setting to learn more. The Herb Room’s knowledgeable staff can even make custom blends. Robyn explains, “We strive to provide a tranquil environment. We want people to feel at home, unplug, hang out, drink tea, and stay awhile.” She earned a Botany Degree in Northern California in 2005 and completed herbal training at the California School of Herbal Studies, one of North America’s oldest centers for herbal education. Robyn credits her family as the source of her passion for plants. “My grandfather was such an influence on me. He was a first-generation Norwegian and he taught me a lot about organic gardening, a deep appreciation of nature, and the concept of medicine as food. We lived in Healdsburg in Sonoma County near the Russian River. It was a magical place to grow up.” In the apothecary, you’ll find 170-plus organic herbs and spices, locally prepared medicinal tinctures- and CBD oil. Robyn explains, “My focus is on food as medicine for everyday health. I believe in a holistic and plant-based approach to keeping our bodies healthy, our families healthy, and our lives sustainable, using the healing power of plants.” A spacious gift shop with delicate and unique jewelry crafted from local artisans, local organic bath products includes Robyn’s popular handmade herbal soaps, essential oils that have been harvested locally whenever possible and hand-bottled in the shop, sage wands, and diffusers. “I create a lot of my products here in this building including all of the soaps, which are blended with olive oil. I’ve been making these same herbal soaps for over 20 years from a recipe handed down from my aunt,” Robyn explains. You’ll also find a large selection of tea accessories at the Herb Room, designed to pair with teas by the ounce available for purchase for that tea connoisseur in your life. Robyn and her staff are happy to take orders via email and can ship anywhere in the country. She hopes visitors will find The Herb Room to be a restorative place where people can come to relax, learn, and be inspired. “Nature has always been my space. I’m so honored to be a part of this path I’m walking on and to be able to share it,” Robyn explains. “This has always been the path I knew, a way of life that has chosen me. Everyone is welcome here at The Herb Room - everyone from all walks of life, no matter what you believe - is welcome to come in and find that peace for yourself.” Photos courtesy The Herb Room. The Herb Room is located at 13710 Ranch Road 12, near the Wimberley Square. Hours are Wednesday to Friday from noon to 6 pm, Saturdays 10:30 am to 6 pm and Sunday from 12:30 pm to 5 pm. Founder Tim de Jong opened Wimberley Glassworks in 1992, just a year after graduating from art school in New York. His inspiration for working with glass and lighting was born during his time in New York, when he noticed the sun reflecting off the ice hanging on light posts at Niagara Falls. Tim had discovered Wimberley through a friend when he was fresh out of high school on a cross-country trip. He had originally been unsure about attending college, and his father challenged Tim’s ambivalence with a one-way ticket to Seattle and $300. As he was struggling to work his way home to Philadelphia with the determination not to fail, Tim fell in love with WimSEE Wimberley Glassworks, page 18

berley and vowed to return. After graduating from art school, Tim saved his money while working three jobs. A year later, he moved to town and opened shop. At the time, he was a one-man operation focused on creating hand-blown drinking glasses and pitchers. Tim says he had many doubters saying his business wouldn’t be successful here, and there were several times it almost wasn’t. To stay afloat during those tough times, he renovated houses on the weekends in Austin and took his glassblowing on the road to renaissance festivals. During the week he would continue glassblowing in his Wimberley studio. He credits the community as the reason he’s still here and explains, “People in this area have gone out of their way to support this studio.” Tim says he is also thankful to a friend from the northeast who came to help him so he could fully focus on his art. He outgrew his original studio, and in 2006 designed the current Wimberley Glassworks location to provide the perfect layout for his glassblowing studio, including a viewing area and gift shop. Twenty-seven years into the business, Tim has a team as passionate about the art of glassblowing as he is. His recent accomplishments showcase his life’s experience in this rare art – his intricate chandelier installations now hang from notable office buildings in major cities across the country. Visitors to the Wimberley Glassworks gallery will find everything from delicate glass-blown jewelry pendants and rings to vases, sculptures, an assortment of hummingbird feeders, custom glass and pitcher sets, bowls and platters, several types of lighting, paperweights, even memorial sculptures. Guests can also enjoy complimentary glassblowing demonSEE Wimberley Glassworks, page 20

strations. Recently added Hot Shop experiences, during which visitors can design their own glass piece in one of their Glass Classes or Pop-Up Classes, allow for a real hands-on experience. Wimberley Glassworks is also happy to schedule private classes for bachelorette parties, corporate get-togethers, and reunions. Tim laughs, “Blowing glass is like you’re dancing with a super-hot dance partner who will burn you. The whole art form is a dance, there’s not a thing I make in there that I don’t put my soul into. How fortunate am I to come to work every day and be able to make something meaningful?” He is often compelled to create something beautiful out of something tragic. He explains, “My art is inspired by nature.” It’s my job as an artist to speak what I hear and to create what I see – no matter how difficult it is to hear or see.” Following the 2015 Memorial Day Flood, Tim and his team gathered logs that had washed downstream. “We wanted to find a way to make them something beautiful again after becoming something so devastating during the flood,” he explains. “We designed these River Timber Light Shades that are plunge cut and molded from actual downed cypress trees. We can’t make them fast enough. It’s something that touches people when they see or hear about it.” Tim’s custom glass lighting installations are often inspired by water, sunrises, trees, and other natural elements. It’s a collaborative process with the architect, general contractor, engineer, or owner. The line of “new beginnings” platters represents the journey of life and the way experiences shape and mold us, something Tim says he has seen orchestrated in his own life. Reflecting on that cross-country trip as the foundation for determination and the knowledge that if he hit rock bottom, Tim knew he’d always be able to come right back up. Before his father died, he told Tim he’d have to change one life during his lifetime. Tim answered that call by adopting his daughter from China. Little did he know, the life that would be changed would be his own. His daughter — now 18 — possesses the same beautiful spirit that has allowed him to be optimistic, successful, and resilient. After all his years here, Tim continues to appreciate the Wimberley sunsets and their play on lighting. His creative mind is always translating what he sees in nature to a new glass lighting project. “I feel that as a society, we are a little too removed from nature. There really isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t appreciate something about being here.” He’s aware that success is often a community effort. “I wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for the people who have supported my vision, including my employees,” Tim smiles. “If you’re open, you’re honest, and you trust in humanity, the right people are always there.” Wimberley Glassworks is located at 6469 Ranch Road 12 in San Marcos, about two miles from the Junction. Hours are Monday through Saturday 10 am to 5 pm and Sunday noon to 5 pm. Star Antique

for fine vintage lighting & more

BY BONNIE EISSLER

N

othing sets the mood of your home better than lighting – table and floor lamps, wall sconces and ceiling fixtures – and lights are a relatively easy way to enhance or update your décor. Lisa Kiefer, owner and proprietor of Star Antique, offers a sparkling selection of vintage and antique lamps and light fixtures, including Victorian and Colonial Revival period items, as well as carefully curated treasures for the home and garden. After Lisa graduated with a business management degree from Texas Tech, she says, “I didn’t want to get a ‘real job’ so I started buying lamps and working on them.” Lamps took up less space and were easier to transport and work with than larger furniture items. She learned her trade by taking apart lamps and putting them back together, innovating and changing things around as inspiration or necessity directed. “I used to spend a lot of time on the road going to different markets and antique shows.” Lisa says, “but I’m not making as many shopping trips now because I’ll always find something I want and I already have so much here in the warehouse – piles of parts and pieces – to work on.” Lisa opened her first store in Buda and 14 years later, in 1997, she set up shop at the idyllic River Road location in Wimberley, a wonderful setting “which has been a great blessing,” she says. “I have also been fortunate to have Alyson Waldron working with me.” Alyson has been working at Star Antique for 14 years, but says, “I used to shop here, even before moving to Wimberley, I loved the store and came by every time I was in town.” Most of the lighting in the shop is either a restored antique or a Star custom creation which might be anything from a construction of old coat hangers and springs to an industrial style ceiling light with Edison light bulbs. One of Lisa’s personal favorite ceiling lights is made from a phonograph horn fitted with a tricycle tire and crystal pendants. This unusual and whimsical light is reminiscent of the Victorian era inventor, Thomas Edison, as the phonograph was his first invention, which he put aside in 1878 to work on the incandescent light bulb. STAR ANTIQUE, from page 22

Lisa likes to blur the line between outside and inside décor and she especially loves the garden area. “Working out here is great therapy,” she says. “I enjoy making bird feeders from cast off table lamp parts, old teapots and those old silverplate serving trays that everyone used to have for entertaining but nobody uses now. It’s a stress reliever to make these for the birds and, as often as not, the squirrels.” The garden area is lovely and peaceful, with trellises and topiaries, bird feeders, window frames and arches, chandeliers hanging from tree limbs, and diverse statuary from Buddhas and unicorns to cats, rabbits, owls and squirrels. As Wimberley attracts thousands of visitors every year, many tourists find their way to Star Antique, which Lisa appreciates, but she is especially grateful for her local customers. The antique business has changed so much over the last several decades, with online shops like Etsy and other internet shopping just the latest of those changes. Gone are the days of scouring the daily newspaper for garage and yard sales and then hitting the road early to hunt for hidden treasures. Following the 2015 Memorial Day flood, many people came to Star Antique with damaged lamps that needed to be cleaned or repaired. “So many people had lamps that had been in their families for a long time, that had sentimental as well as monetary value.” For months, Lisa and Alyson worked cleaning and repairing lamps and finding shades to replace those that had been irreparably damaged in the deluge. It was a bittersweet task, a reminder both of the devastation of the flood and the resilience of the people of Wimberley. Photos by Bonnie Eissler. Star Antique is at 301 River Road. ountain View Lodge may not have been designed to provide an interactive nature experience, but a stay at property has certainly become one over the years. Where else can you enjoy sweeping hilltop views overlooking the Wimberley Valley, bird watching, hiking and wildlife, even a nature trail complete with an authentic dinosaur track? Lodge guests can expect to see an abundance of wildlife during a stay —including hummingbirds, Scott’s oriole, painted buntings, cardinals, Mexican Jay, lesser goldfinch, golden fronted woodpecker, a local roadrunner (chapparal) that hangs out on the property, squirrels, deer, occasionally even fox. You can take in the gorgeous views from the swimming pool deck, picnic area or balconies. Allie Turner, whose family took over the property in 2015, smiles, “We get a lot of compliments about our view. It’s very calming.” Situated on five-and-a-half acres on Ranch Road 12, the Mountain View Lodge offers 16 rooms, each with a gorgeous view, many with balconies. All accommodations have cable television, wi-fi, coffee makers and hair dryers. Guests can stroll the property, hike down into the valley, cool off in the swimming pool, or just relax and take in the view. Breakfast snacks plus coffee and fresh-baked cookies are provided each afternoon. One feature not to miss is the nature trail, replete with live oaks, Texas redbud, Twist leaf yucca, jujube, big bluestem, Texas SEE Mountain View Lodge, page 31

We like them to know that they matter, that they are the key to our success.” The team works well together and goes above and beyond for lodge guests, she says. “We try to make things special if we know someone is celebrating an event, something small to show that we care,” Allie explains. The Mountain View Lodge team continues updating the property and making improvements, while striving to maintain a competitive price point for its patrons. “We like to keep it affordable for all our guests,” Allie says. “Wimberley is a friendly and welcoming community. We’re very fortunate to own this little slice of heaven.”

W

imberley Village Library is a busy place offering a variety of entertaining and educational activities for patrons of all ages. Where else can you go to borrow a book or DVD, have access to free Wi-Fi, or hang out and read, research or write without having to buy anything? With educational costs and the cost of living going up every year, it’s important to reflect on how much the library gives to the community. Beyond books and DVDs and computers, although all of these are important, the library builds and maintains strong community connections, offers opportunities for cultural enrichment, and provides a place for everyone, regardless of age,

In fact, “loud” is the new normal. We have shifted our focus to be more community-centered. We have entertaining and educational programs for patrons of all ages and we provide many free or low-cost services such as Internet use, copying, scanning, notary service, hot spots available for checkout, laptops available for inhouse checkout, digital magazines, downloadable e-book and audiobook checkouts and more. Our expansion project supports this “new normal” — our plan is to add additional meeting rooms and to expand our youth and teen areas. Our current building will be remodeled/repurposed to add more meeting/ programming space, as well as a space for our Friends group to sell used books year round. Anyone interested in more information or who would like to donate, call me at 847-2188, ext. 106.

background or income, to learn and exchange ideas. Programs for youth, tweens and teens offer age-appropriate activities. At Toddler Time on Mondays, children from 0 to 3 enjoy stories, singing and easy crafts related to a theme for the day. Emily McDonald, the library’s children and youth specialist, conducts the toddler’s activities and pre-school story time on Fridays for children 3 to 5 years old. For children between 5 and 8 years old, the STEAM program (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) increases their knowledge and stimulates their natural curiosity with projects that are fun and engaging. Programs have included volcano experiments, working with LEGO, dinosaur fossil exploration, marshmallow engineering, and even live reptiles. Books and more books are still front and center at the library. There’s a Teen book section with popular, awardwinning hardback books to appeal to this age group, and programs for early reading. One of these is “1000 Books Before Kindergarten,” encouraging early exposure to hearing books read aloud. Your child receives a free book and a 1000 books journal to keep a record of all the books that are read. At different levels along the 1000 book reading journey, the child will receive small gifts including books and a special tee shirt. Adults can participate in exercise classes or study Spanish in beginning and intermediate level classes at the library. You can listen to speakers on topics that range from the effects of sugar on your health to the plight of the endangered Ridley sea turtles. Three programs coming soon are highly recommended by Emily. One is for kids, another for moms, and a third for moms (or caregivers) to do with their kids. A Creative Writing Club for Kids ages 9-12 will meet each Wednesday afternoon 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm from September 4 through November 20. “Kids will gather to learn about different elements of creating a story like plot, characters, dialogue and editing,” Emily says, “they’ll have the opportunity to get their books in print and on the library shelves.” The second activity is a Mom’s Night Out (no child care for this event) September 11, from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm for a pressed flowers workshop and an evening of relaxing with other Wimberley moms. Light refreshments will be provided and moms are invited to bring wine if they feel so inclined. “Like all library programs, this one is free to the public,” Emily says. The third activity is Parent + Child (ages 7–12) Holiday Hand Sewing, led by local artist and teacher, Ann Steine. Each class will include a project featuring the major holiday of the month. The first class, Halloween Hand Sewing, meets October 16; the second class, Fall/Thanksgiving Hand 34   Welcome to Wimberley Fall/Winter 2019-20

In the 1850s, Wimberley had a grist mill, tannery, store, shoe shop, and a school that was also used as a church and meeting hall. By the 1870s, it also had a blacksmith. By 1880, the Post Office was set up. By 1900, nine houses were built around the square. By the 1920s, the county finally started to improve roads in and out of the village (the road to San Marcos was paved in 1921). By 1939, electricity was available. The population tripled from 1880 to 1947, based on estimates by the Post Office, to a little more than 400 people.

Real Estate Professionals Betty & Steve Giannone, GRI, SRS, RSPS, MRP, Luxury Collection & Presidents Circle BERKSHIRE HATHAWAY HOME SERVICES

Steve and Betty Giannone have lived in Wimberley and worked in Real Estate in the Texas Hill Country for more than 28 years. Steve’s background is in the mortgage industry, which equips him with outstanding value analysis and negotiating skills. Betty’s experience is in real estate marketing where she honed her skills at reaching out to buyers for national development companies. With their combined talents, specializing in marketing and transaction management they offer both buyers and sellers a distinct advantage in the real estate marketplace. Steve attended St. Thomas in Houston, and he enjoys watching professional sports and chasing a small white ball in Texas wide open spaces. Betty grew up in Chicago but moved to Austin for the music in the late ’70s. She also enjoys chasing the white ball, just from several strokes behind. Together they have raised three fine young men in Wimberley. Trust, integrity, stability and longevity are the hallmarks of Don Johnson REALTORS, the area’s oldest real estate brokerage. Founded by Don and Ann Johnson more than 50 years ago, the company currently has four offices and 150 Realtors. State of the art technology and an unyielding commitment to customer service are the tools and ideals we think give our clients an advantage in the real estate market place. Betty and Steve’s production is rated in the top 4 percent nationally!

Barbara Latimer, Broker/Branch Manager HILLS OF TEXAS / SKY REALTY Broker/Owner at Hills of Texas Realty, Barbara merged her company with Sky Realty in 2015 to form Hills of Texas/ Sky Realty. Her 22+ years’ experience and knowledge of the market provides the highest level of service for her clients. “It’s work I love. There is nothing else I’d rather do, she says. “There are challenges to working in a rural market, but I thrive on those challenges. Every property is unique and interesting. I love problem solving and helping my clients.” Well, septic and Oak wilt inspections are typical occurrences for Barbara, but to urban agents they can be foreign. A local market expert and a Texas Monthly magazine “Five Star Real Estate Agent” for the last 9 years, it is obvious Barbara loves her career and is eager to help buyers and sellers. Her clients definitely count on her expertise, but they also love her approach. She’s the whole package and say things like, “We interviewed several agents, but we wanted someone we could connect with,” says one client. “Barbara walked in the door, and her enthusiasm and attention to detail won us over. She’s definitely the reason we were able to finalize the sale.” Originally from Houston and a graduate of the University of Texas, Barbara and her family moved to Wimberley in 1997. In her free time, she and her husband, Gaylan, enjoy boating, live music venues and exploring the Hill Country.

She is a member of the National and Texas Association of Realtors, as well as the Austin and Four Rivers Board of Realtors. Linda and her husband, Gene, moved to Wimberley 15 years ago and both are active, involved members of the Wimberley community. Linda has served a total of three terms on the Board of Directors for the Wimberley Valley Chamber of Commerce, having served as the Board’s Chairperson for two years.
