The rivers of Texas Hill Country have a way of refreshing your senses like only nature can. Breathe in the wide-open spaces, feel grounded along the riverbanks, and weightless in the soft current.
From the Publisher
Dear Friends -
The sun is shining brightly and the air is cool this morning with the sky a beautiful baby blue. Because of the sun, colorful birds are singing, the grass has turned an emerald green and there are plentiful leaves on the branches and blooms on the flowers.
The colors of the Texas flag are glowing brightly, as it whips in the breeze and is displayed proudly. I am sitting here in the sunshine reflecting that Mother's Day weekend is upon us and I am beyond blessed with the beauty surrounding me in so many ways. I am a mom and stepmom to four amazing adult children.
I have my mom and my new mother-in-law, who are two of the most incredible women in my life. I have countless others who are role models, business colleagues, friends and some are what we call "framily" who I couldn't get through life without. I just want to say thank you.
I am so glad that you have entered my life for various reasons. For loving on my children and my family, being there just because, and for the laughter, the memories, the challenges and for those who have supported my small business of 20 years.
I absolutely love the Hill Country SUN family that has been created and the people I have met along the way in this journey. I am also thankful for the beauty that the Hill Country has shown me from town to town, as the sun has shone brightly along the way.
Take in the sun of our Hill Country ...the bright ball in the sky that shines to give you light and energy, making life as we know it possible...just like our precious mamas.
And take in the Hill Country SUN, which is full of information about life going on around you in our beautiful Hill Country and created with you in mind...to help you find that something special, fun or entertaining for Mom, yourself, friends and family. ENJOY!
With love and gratitude, Julie
My sweet "mother-in-love," Jane, and my own precious mom, Adelle. I love these two mamas to the moon and back!
"Framily" fun night in Austin.
Love from my Songs on the Frio family.
The Riv Resort ON THE NUECES
By ERNIE ALTGELT
Who hasn’t felt the need to take a break from the pressures and stresses often associated with a modern urban lifestyle? Probably the answer is most of us but for many feeling the need, the big question is “so what do we do about it?” Well thankfully, as lots of folks have discovered, the solution is as easy booking a restorative stay at Uvalde’s premier destination, The Riv – a welcoming riverside resort replete with everything needed to refresh, recharge and renew. Splash!
To those unfamiliar with The Riv, its entire reason for being is to provide an “escape” for those requiring a little (or a lot of) “me/ us time” enhanced by exceptional accommodations, beautiful rural vistas and especially, a long and inviting stretch of the crystal-clear Nueces River. Yep, the ingredients are all there for a successful respite and, when experienced, it all feels so good. Problem solved!
Opened in 2019, the 70-acre resort boasting 250 yards of private river-frontage balanced by multiple unspoiled natural areas initially only offered a few cabins for rent.
Once discovered however and with demand increased, The Riv expanded over the last five years to now include 10 modern, beautifully appointed rental units in varying sizes ranging from 1,200 square-feet cabins to 3,000 square-feet lodges, all featuring complete, well-stocked kitchens, multiple spacious bedrooms and baths, outdoor BBQ and fire pits and patio-seating as well as fiber optic wi-fi, smart TVs, laundry facilities (in most) and, of course, plenty of separation between each unit. But there’s more.
Complementing the living quarters are three outdoor picnic table-equipped pavilions available for use, each with electricity, lighting and ceiling fans that all overlook the resort’s signature

river. There are also pickle ball courts, a basketball sport court and a large grassy area perfect for frisbee tossing and other activities. Most necessary equipment is provided. There is also an oak-shaded group seating area with a fabulous river view open to all guests at all times. And, of course, just walking the natural areas with its abundant wildlife can also be fun and relaxing.
But, with a name like The Riv, obv iously it is the Nueces River that’s the resort’s greatest attraction.
With the property being located upstream from the dam, the refreshing water in the river is always plentiful and pristine and visitors are encouraged to take advantage of all it has to offer.
That includes swimming, wading, kayaking, tubing, paddle boarding and yes, fishing (for bass, catfish, trout and tilapia) as well. Two floating docks complete the picture. Yep, it’s the incredible river that folks come to enjoy. The other amenities just add to the overall package.
So, who comes to The Riv? Well, how about “just about anyone.” Families with young kids love the place. Adults in groups or as individuals find lots to do too. Planning a wedding, family reunion or business retreat, The Riv’s got you covered.
And, unlike other venues, this resort is open ’year round with swimming often lasting until October. No pets allowed, however. And, while most spend all of their time on the property, the resort is only about an hour away from Garner State Park and other points of interest if one is inclined to make a side trip.
FYI • The Riv is located at 140 County Road 417 in Uvalde. For more information including some very illustrative videos, rates and to make a reservation, visit the website at theriv.com. THE RIV RESORT, from Page 6
Willow Lake WATERING HOLE & MERCANTILE
Music and art are meant to be shared. Listening to music, watching sports or playing games over a round of drinks or tacos strengthen bonds with friends, family and bring people from different backgrounds together to foster a sense of unity. Willow Lake Watering Hole & Mercantile, a vintage Texas-inspired bar and music venue, has been a welcome addition to downtown Wimberley since opening last April on the weekend of the highly anticipated 2024 total solar eclipse.
Owners Chloe Glasscock and Greg McBride saw a need to showcase the many talented local musicians, songwriters and artisans who flock to Wimberley and the Texas Hill Country seeking a creative, community-oriented environment.
Chloe’s beloved parents, Nuccia and Lonnie Glasscock III, founded the original Willow Lake Dance Hall in Old San Patricio in 1973, a year after townspeople there defeated an annexation attempt by the city of Corpus Christi. “Their love for community drew all kinds of folks and families from miles around together to gather, listen to local music, dance and have a dang good time,” Chloe reminisces.
Carrying on the family tradition of hospitality and community service comes naturally to Chloe. The cozy interior and peaceful welcoming ambience at Willow Lake are a tribute to her creative vision. The rustic venue is adorned with antiques, vintage western memorabilia and music posters, cozy nooks, and large windows framing picturesque views. The bar facade features reclaimed wood and the ceiling in the bar room has been stripped down to its lovely original state. Mounted Longhorns, measuring well over nine feet, hang over the mantel of the old rock fireplace. Décor inside and out is eclectic and achieves the wonderful warm “grandad’s ranch house vibe” that Chloe had in mind.
Twenty-four beautiful heritage oaks on the nearly one-acre property overlooking Cypress Creek send a symbolic message of strength and endurance. The huge wrap-around porch invites folks to sit back and stay a while. Chloe says, “it’s a space that effortlessly transitions from a laid-back daytime escape to an electrifying evening of live music and celebration.”
Chloe’s education and work is in culinary arts and restaurant management. In 2010, she moved to Wimberley looking for a smaller town to live in and raise her family. Being self-employed and “creating a space for people to make memories” is the perfect gig for Chloe and partner Greg, a retired server-side architect.

Home Grown
By the late 20th century, factory farms were the norm in the United States and consumers were becoming increasingly disconnected from the food production process. Concerns about the excessive use of pesticides and fertilizers, as well as about health, the environment and animal welfare led many to seek out more sustainable and ethical alternatives.
Like the early proponents of the 1980s “Slow Food Movement,” the folks at Home Grown prioritize supporting local farmers and small businesses. They passionately advocate for fresh nutritious foods and sustainable agricultural practices, and encourage slowing down to appreciate family, faith and community.
“Home Grown is a family farm, ranch and gluten-free bakery located west of Dripping Springs that originated about two years ago from a love of gardening and raising their own food,” says marketing director Holly Bolter.
“They ended up with more than enough and decided to start sharing in many ways and gradually, through growth and over time, became part of a small local farming community.”
They carry organic herb, fruit and vegetable transplants from Gabriel Valley Farms, as well as ones they start themselves, and nonGMO (not genetically modified) seeds from Bentley Seed Company.
Gabriel Valley Farms, an organic nursery, specializes in “certified organic” herbs and vegetable plants. They offer native and perennials and have been serving farmers, retail garden centers and landscaping companies in Central Texas since 1989.
The demand for gluten-free items on grocery shelves and restaurant menus has grown exponentially in recent years. Evangeline Gluten Free Bakery, centrally located on the farm and an essential member of the Home Grown family, uses organic non-

GMO ingredients and is in a 100% gluten-free kitchen. They offer a variety of delicious cookies (oatmeal raisin, snickerdoodles, chocolate chip); muffins (blueberry, chocolate chip, lemon poppyseed); fudge brownies and coffee cakes.
There’s a mistaken impression many people have that only those with celiac disease (an autoimmune condition) should avoid eating breads, pastas, cereals and processed foods that contain gluten, which is the general term for a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. They may also believe that celiac disease is something new because “nobody ever had this when they were young.”
In fact, that’s not the case. Archaeological evidence from the first century A.D. shows the presence of specific genes and damage that are typically caused by this disease. As more people have discovered, a gluten-free diet isn’t just for those who have celiac disease. Many people simply feel much better when they don’t eat gluten due to a gluten intolerance or other gastrointestinal issues.
Home Grown currently has about twenty different vendors — including Wagyu beef from Peeler Farms, Sky Roasters coffee, Mountain Rose dried herbs and spices, Keeper’s Harvest Honey, Texas Wild Seafood, Happy Grazer Charcuterie and Hummus, Texas Hill Country Olive Oil — and is adding to their vendor list daily.
Home Grown Farm and Ranch provides healthier options for meats, vegetables, eggs, dairy, gluten-free bakery treats, a host of other home goods and gifts — all the best that’s local, organic, fresh from the farm. Photos courtesy Home Grown.
FYI • The Home Grown store is located at 2400–B US Highway 290, #7, in Dripping Springs (in the same complex as El Rey). Shop in store or online. Open Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9 am to 5 pm, Wednesday 9 am to 6 pm and Saturday 9 am to 3 pm. For information about products, drop times and locations, and to order, visit homegrown777.com.
Along the way, he also acquired almost 10,000 acres in the Hill Country and a farm in South Texas, with a little over 2,100 acres still held by the family today.
Buchanans signature iced house drink “The Wildcatter’ is a sweet and cinnamony triple espresso that’s named for “Daddy Al.”
Their specialty coffee is organic and sustainably sourced through Proud Mary, a local Austin roaster. The blend is a mixed variety from Brazil and Columbia, renowned as some of the best coffee in the world. The cooler temperature, high altitude, plentiful rainfall and volcanic soil comprise the ideal growing conditions for top quality coffee. The coffee tastes terrific, whether it’s a classic cup of smooth black coffee or a fancier espresso drink with steamed milk, chocolate or caramel.
Designed to encourage lingering, with cozy seating areas inside and out, by the fireplace, on the front porch or shady back patio, Buchanans Coffee House recalls an earlier era of unhurried conversations while sitting around the kitchen table. This is the quintessential coffee house experience that you won’t get from a chain coffee shop or at a drive-through window drinking coffee in your car all by yourself.
