ou better believe they know how to feed people. After 10 years of delivering noonday meals to scores of homebound elderly in the greater Dripping Springs area, The Friends Foundation has a handle on that.

So when they put on their annual fundraising dinner at the Salt Lick Pavilion in Driftwood October 13, folks around Dripping Springs will line up for heaping helpings of delicious barbeque, wonderful live music and the best live and silent auctions in Central Texas – to help The Friends Foundation “do good deeds to meet the elderly’s needs.”

This year’s 23rd annual Friends Foundation BBQ will serve up even more of what the community has come to expect from the homegrown non-profit’s only fundraiser of the year: a great chance to share the camaraderie of some 700 local

friends and celebrities, enjoy good food and drink, and support the Friends Foundation programs throughout the year.

Beginning at 5 pm in the outdoor Tasting Tents, libations from Dripping Springs Vodka, Duchman Family Winery, Thirsty Planet Brewing Company and Live Kombucha will be served with appetizers, while early birds scout the best bargains in the huge Silent Auction (voted Best in Central Texas).

From 6 pm to 8 pm, the Salt Lick will serve their famous barbeque dinner, accompanied by homemade desserts prepared by the Bluebonnet Auxiliary. During dinner, folks can enjoy the Western Swing sounds of Alex Dormont and the Hot Texas Swing Band.

Following the Live Auction, winners of three fabulous raffles prizes will be announced, along with the winners of the Silent Auction.

100 percent of proceeds from the evening’s events will directly benefit area seniors served by The Friends Foundation programs. The 501(c)3 non-profit is run entirely by volunteers from the Dripping Springs community who deliver meals, repair housing, and help with many unmet needs of area seniors living at home and in Hill Country Care Nursing and Rehab Center in Dripping Springs.

“Our signature program is Our Daily Bread, similar to Meals on Wheels, but local and more personal,” says Kathy Carriker, The Friends Foundation secretary.

Three days a week, volunteers deliver hot meals prepared in the Hill Country Care kitchen to more than 30 homebound seniors. “We’re always looking for additional drivers,” she adds.

Simply pushing a button on a communication device worn as a necklace or clipped to clothing can bring help at any time. The Foundation has recently added a Fall Alert system to its program, which will self-activate if the wearer suffers a fall and can’t push the button.

The Foundation also helps with quality-of-life issues for low-income Dripping Springs seniors through its Financial Assistance program. Through it, they’ve helped pay for everything from dental care to automobile repair to funeral ex-

penses, says a Board member. The most common requests for financial help are for medical needs and utility bills, she reports.

Tea and cookies will round out the meal, along with optional beverages from Mercer Street Dancehall’s full bar.

Alex Dormont, Chad and Natasha Hudson, Bill Paige, and The Hill Country Ramblers will entertain from the dancehall stage all afternoon.

Renowned potters Bill and Bridgett Hauser will create 1,000 hand-thrown bowls for the event; The Art Garage will contribute an additional 500.

After spending its first 17 years at Sunset Canyon Pottery, The Empty Bowls Project has moved to Mercer Street Dancehall for the second year in a row.

Parking is plentiful and soup lines will be short at the air-conditioned venue, located in the heart of downtown.

Merchants throughout Dripping Springs’ three historic districts (all within walking distance of the event) will be open in support of The Empty Bowls Project that Sunday afternoon, with several donating part of the day’s sales to Helping Hands. “Come for the day, stroll the historic districts and visit the merchants,” suggests event co-chair Kristi Greene.

All the proceeds from The Empty Bowls Project help stock the shelves at the Helping Hands Food Pantry, Dripping Springs’ only food pantry, and support other programs that benefit less fortunate people in the community.

Last year’s event raised more than 60 percent of Helping Hands’ annual budget. The organization provided over 109,000 pounds of food through the pantry and a summer supplement program that serves as an important source of nutrition for hungry children during the school break.

This year, Helping Hands Food Pantry moved from a ramshackle shed that had housed it for years to a 4200 squarefoot industrial facility custom-built for it in Dripping Springs Methodist Church’s new Foundry complex on Ranch Road 12.

With new plumbing, refrigerators, spa-

cious shelving and a gathering space, the space is a huge step up for the non-profit.

“Helping Hands now has running water and floors that aren’t partially dirt,” reports co-chair June Baumoel with a wry grin.

Helping Hands also provides financial assistance to struggling families and low-income individuals to help cover costs of utilities, housing and transportation. It provides school supplies through its Stuff the Bus program and holiday gifts through Project Elf. The national Empty Bowls Project was started in 1990 by high school art teacher John Hartom in Michigan, as a way artists and students could give back and make a personal difference in their community.

He encouraged his art students to make ceramic bowls, which they donated as serving pieces for a fund-raising meal of soup and bread. Empty Bowls events have since spread across the United States and to at least a dozen other countries.

Dripping Springs’ Empty Bowls Project is co-sponsored by Helping Hands and the City of Dripping Springs, along with dozens of local businesses and individuals at eight different sponsorship levels. The event is held annually on the first Sunday of November.
