Iconic backdrops for any gathering at Pound House

he newest wedding venue in Dripping Springs is also the oldest gathering place in town. The Dr. Pound Historical Farmstead Museum, Dripping Springs’ original homestead and community center dating back to 1854, now makes its historic grounds and facilities available to couples tying the knot and for family gatherings, business events, birthday parties and other groups seeking to enjoy themselves in a scenic setting. The historic compound offers iconic backdrops for any kind of gathering, says museum director, Andrea Larsen. In addition to the beautifully restored 1850s era dogtrot house, the museum grounds feature an original smokehouse, windmill, blacksmith shop, rail fences and original stone walls – surrounded by acres of green grass in the

with up-to-date conveniences. Soon a Holiday Inn Express with 80-room occupancy will open nearby. “We want people to be able to enjoy and use our beautiful grounds,” says Andrea. Several weddings and corporate gatherings have already taken place at the Pound House, with more events planned in the coming months. The Heritage Gala, the museum’s largest annual fundraiser, originally designed the template for staging large events on the museum grounds. Each April for the past 26 years, the Gala has entertained hundreds of museum supporters with cocktails and a catered buffet inside festive tents on the museum grounds. Dinner is always followed by a spirited auction and dancing to one of the best bands in the area.
This year’s event on April 29 will continue the tradition with “Twilight and Starlight – a Sparkling Country Evening.” Appetizers and cocktails will be followed by dinner, courtesy of Verde’s Mexican Parrilla, and live music provided by Hudson and Pope. Items in the silent and live auctions will range from the rustic to the opulent, with large dinner parties hosted by notable locals and vacation packages to exotic locations hotly competed for in the bidding wars. “The Dripping Springs community really enjoys coming out to this festive evening to help the Dr. Pound Historical Farmstead promote and preserve Dripping Springs area history and ensure that it continues to thrive…” says the museum’s See POUND HOUSE, page 3

Board of Directors. The historic farm homestead was built by one of Dripping Springs’ founding families – Dr. Joseph and Sarah Pound, who in 1854 settled in the untamed Texas wilderness that came to be Dripping Springs. Their original two-room cabin eventually grew to become a six-room dogtrot style home with an ingenious cistern (accessible from indoors, in the event of Indian raids), a windmill, stables, a smokehouse, a blacksmith shop and a walk-in cold frame. The Pound House became the community gathering spot for the Dripping Springs, Fitzhugh and Mount Gainor communities, and at different times served as a doctor’s office, school, church and social center. The Pounds raised nine children there; four generations of the Pound family occupied the farmstead over a period of 130
years, until 1983. The house and outbuildings have been painstakingly restored over the past two decades and today are the centerpiece of the five-acre Dr. Pound Pioneer Farmstead Museum, located at the back of Founders Park. Docents in period dress lead tours of the house and outbuildings during regular museum hours (Wednesday through Saturday from noon to 3 pm) and private tours
by appointment. The museum hosts school tours and children’s events throughout the year. FYI • The Dr. Pound Historical Farmstead Museum is located at 570 Founders Park Road in Dripping Springs. Regular museum hours are noon to 3 pm, Wednesday through Saturday. For more information on the Heritage Gala (April 29), Pioneer Day in late September, and the special events venues, visit the website www.drpoundhistoricalfarmstead. org, or call 512-858-2030.

ay 6-7, you’ll have a rare opportunity to view Hill Country artists in their natural setting – an art studio! The Tour the Talent studio tour, presented by the Artist Alliance of the Hill Country (AAHC), will showcase the work of more than 20 regional artists at five working art studios in the Dripping Springs area. The free event is open to the public. “This year, we’ve clustered the studios to make it easy for people to get around to see all the works,” says alliance member John West, one of the organizers of the tour. Their goal, he says, is to have a rich mix of media at each venue, for the benefit of patrons who may be able to visit just a few of the five studios. Innovative fine art at the show will represent a diverse selection of original paintings, jewelry, pottery, photography, fused glass, sculpture, poetry - even instrumental music to lend a creative air. The Artist Alliance of the Hill Country is a non-profit established in 2013 by local artists to advance their art and promote art awareness in the surrounding communities. Members included artists from Dripping Springs, Driftwood, Johnson City, Spicewood, Canyon Lake and Austin, representing a wide range of me-
dia and styles, as well as art supporters and patrons. The group meets monthly to share art demonstrations, educational presentations, studio visits and gallery events. The Artist Alliance of the Hill Country also sponsors a juried art show each fall. The Show is scheduled for September 30 and October 1 at Dripping Springs Ranch Park Event Center. FYI • The Artists Alliance of the Hill Country Tour the Talent studio tour will take place May 6 - 7 from 11 am to 4 pm at five art studios in and around Dripping Springs. A map and brochure of the Tour the Talent studio tour are available at www.tourthetalent.com or at the Dripping Springs Visitor’s Center, 509 West Mercer Street.
