THE WATER IN

FLINT

In April of 2014, citizens of Flint, Michigan had a series of problems that culminated with lead contamination in their treated water, which poses a serious health danger.

With an increasing number of lawsuits due to the unchanging problem, here is all you need to know about the crisis and how it will affect you.

COAGULATION - removes dirt and other particles suspended in the water. Special chemicals such as alum are added onto the dirt. This added weight causes the dirt to sink to the bottom during sedimentation.

SEDIMENTATION - heavy particles settle to the bottom and the clear water moves to filtration.

FILTRATION - water will pass through certain filters made of layers of sand, gravel and charcoal, which will remove even smaller particles.

DISINFECTION - small amounts of chlorine or other disinfectants are added to kill any bacteria or microorganisms that may be in the water.

STORAGE - water is placed in a closed tank or reservoir for disinfection to take place. The water then flows through pipes to homes and businesses in the community.

SERVICE LINES - In Flint, the service lines connect the majority of water mains and individual homes or businesses are made of lead.

Lead can leach directly from the pipe wall into the water.

Flint's mayor floated an extremely high price tag to fix the Michigan city's lead-contamination problem: $1.5 billion to replace damaged pipes. However, Gov. Rick Snyder put the figure at $700 million.

This process would take about 30 years.

Repairing the pipes over the last 12 years has cost approximately $46 million. If all the pipes are repaired, the entire project could cost another $55 million dollars—money Flint doesn’t have.

Orthophosphates are added to water to reduce the amount of lead leaching into it from pipes. They do this by forming a layer of low-solubility lead-phosphate complexes inside the pipe. This method of corrosion control was not used for the Flint River water supply.

HOW IT AFFECTS INDY With Michigan being so close by, what is Indiana doing to help or prevent lead from entering the water: Edreece Redmond of Indianapolis volunteers help move 150,000 bottles of fresh water to the citizens in Flint, Michigan every day to compensate for the lead contaminated water.

Carmel High School gets its water treated by the City of Carmel Water Treatment plant.

The treatment facility utilizes a three-step process of iron removal, water softening and the addition of chlorine and fluorine which ensures Carmel’s water is clean before leaving the plant.

Freshmen, sophomores to take ISTEP+, sophomores to take ECA as well

F

reshman jake pearson sits on the back of the football team bus on the way to Homestead for the Regional Championships; however, something is on his mind.

“Trust me, I love watching sportsrelated videos,” he said. “But right now, with the changes (to testing) that are being made, I really wish I could study.”

Pearson is not alone. After the Indiana General Assembly voted in favor of the changes, the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) released new ISTEP+ tests to match the new state standards and give faculty better feedback on students. Starting with the Class of 2019, students will take the ISTEP+ for Biology 1, English 10 and math instead of their ECA counterparts. Current sophomores will also take the English 10 and math tests later this semester.

Amanda Pond, supervisor of learning for Carmel Clay Schools, said, “We are trying to measure growth over time with these new tests, so ... we have added more rigor to our tests as well as created a math and language arts test for 10th graders. Although it is only for this year, we are testing ninth graders too.”

The first part of the ISTEP+ test, a 40-minute handwritten math portion, will begin on Feb. 29 and will be administered to all sophomores during SRT. Starting March 2, students will take the English ISTEP+ tests during

Assistant Principal Bradley Sever said his main concern currently is arranging test schedules.

“The way it works is that the IDOE says that for each part of the ISTEP, you get this window to finish it in. Then, I think about what’s going to be the least amount of disruption for CHS,” he said. “The next thing I have to do is ... come up with a computer lab schedule, so I break it Optional this year

In addition to the logistics of test taking, some teachers and proctors said they are worried about this new addition to high school standardized testing. English teacher Kristin Lentz said she thinks the new tests will only make things more complicated.

“I think we have too much standardized testing, and I think trying to prepare kids for that in addition to governing the curriculum is going to be challenging,” Lentz said. “When it comes to computerized testing, many teachers like to use the Freshman Center because it has two computer

immediate feedback with important results, I’m on board with it.”

Sever said time can only tell whether the implementation of the ISTEP+ is a change for the better.

“Since we haven’t really seen the ISTEP tests yet, I think it’s hard to judge (whether the ISTEP is an improvement), so I think it’s kind of a wait-and-see,” he said.

Pearson said he hopes that as the changes become clearer, he will be able to study more efficiently.

“When you know what to expect, it’s easier to study,” Pearson said. “I honestly hope that these changes are H worth it.”

According to Sever, the IDOE gave him information as late as Feb. 3, but he said he has faith in teachers here to adapt. “I just think it’s really great that our staff, when something like this happens, they’re willing to roll their sleeves up and be problemsolvers,” he said.

Lentz said she hopes the new revisions will provide faster feedback than the previous ISTEP+ tests.

“By the time the results come back (from previous ISTEPs), we have already finished scheduling for students and the information becomes invalid,” she said. “As long as the test (for this year) gives

labs on every floor ... We teachers (in the Freshman Center) then lose that time to let students work on projects.”

English teacher Jana Cosler said she sympathizes with students’ frustrations about the sudden change.

“I know very little info on these changes—the state is still making decisions—so without a proper way to teach, it’s just frustrating,” she said. “It also does not align with the Common Core standards, which makes it even more frustrating for me as a teacher ...

Considering my current students will serve as ‘guinea pigs’ for these changes … I feel bad for the sophomores who take both (the ECA and the ISTEP).”

ive chs students plan to attend the HarvardMIT Math Tournament (HMMT) tomorrow at Harvard University.

HMMT registration director David Liang ‘14 said via email, “HMMT is a biannual math contest that is hosted by a coalition of Harvard and MIT students. There is a November tournament that is geared more toward local teams and those who may be new to competition math. The February tournament is for experienced ‘mathletes’ and is regarded to be one of the most difficult high school math contests out there.”

Caleb He, HMMT competitor and junior, said, “(HMMT) brings together many of the top math students in the nation to compete relatively casually.”

MATH MASTER: Caleb He, HMMT competitor and junior, takes the AMC 12, a 75-minute math examination and competition offered twice in early February by the Mathematical Association of America. He will also compete in the Harvard-MIT Math Tournament (HMMT) tomorrow.

According to He, organized teams across the country will apply to compete. Teams will compete together, and their scores will be based on both team and individual events.

He also said there will be multiple subject areas, and different members of each team will compete in the various areas of math that they are most comfortable with.

The final team score will be a sum of the individual test scores and will be used to determine the placement of the team.

Liang said HMMT will start with a Friday night social event where the competitors can get to know each other and attend events hosted by the sponsors of HMMT. According to Liang, HMMT is on Saturday and consists of individual rounds, lunch, team rounds and the

Guts round, as well as an awards ceremony at the end.

“We’ve all been working individually on mathematics just in general, so that in itself serves as preparation for the competition. But, we will still have to familiarize ourselves with the tests so we might use a couple weekends,” Liang said. “In some sense, the test serves as very good preparation for the more serious math contests so that would mean AMC and AIME. I also think it is a very good chance to visit Harvard, MIT; some of those campuses in the Boston area.”

With regard to the competition, Liang said, “I most look forward to the actual event. I not only get to see our hard work come to fruition, but also get to meet and interact with many eager math students and teachers who H are excited about math.”

New lunch options in cafeterias meant to appeal more to students’ preferences NYSSA QIAO // STORY

T

his semester, the “fast Track” lunch line in the main cafeteria began to serve food through the use of “top it” bars. These bars serve Mexican, Asian and Italian foods, as well as potato skins and salads, and they allow students to choose toppings they would like on their lunches.

Sophomore Katherine Long has school lunch two or three times a week and said the addition of the line has allowed school food to be viewed in a more positive light.

“I was not expecting the best from this (change) to be honest,” Long said.

“I was expecting it to be pretty bad, but there’s a lot of different things up there.

You can’t be necessarily 100 percent healthy, but it gives you an option to put what you want in (your lunch).”

According to CHS cafeteria manager Theresa Quade, the cafeteria planned on including the bars as part of the menu next year, so they wanted to try them out to see whether or not they actually wanted to include them.

“Last semester, there were very few people (in the ‘Fast Track’ line),” Quade said. “We didn’t offer a great

deal back there, and now ‘Fast Track’ MIND ON is a booming place.”

Champions Together Club raises money for Special Olympics through Polar Plunge RACHAEL TAN // STORY

I

n march, a team of CHS students will participate in the Polar Plunge, according to Molly McGuire, co-president of Champions Together and senior. In the Polar Plunge, participants jump into a freezing lake to raise funds.

“Polar Plunge is Special Olympics’s biggest fundraiser of the year. It’s where they get the most donations and it’s kind of like the best-known community event,” McGuire said.

“There are a bunch of different dates around the state and different areas where you can plunge, but we’re doing ours March 5, which also happens to be the special one for high schoolers around the state through Champions Together, which is kind of like a subsection of Special Olympics.”

Grace Marchese, co-president of Champions Together and sophomore, said, “The point that they try to make by giving this is not only does it raise money for Special Olympics Indiana, but it also gives each person a little taste of what it’s like for a Special Olympic athlete mobility wise because after you get out of the water you’re very cold and not able to do very many tactile functions.”

very similar to the method used to raise money for Dance Marathon. High schoolers with identification must raise at least 50 dollars. Those who want to just watch can be admitted for five dollars. Marchese said raising money for this event is not hard.

“My favorite way (to collect funds) is to collect change in a jar. This really adds up, and I usually use (the money) towards these kind of things, or I can also email my friends and family and they are always extremely willing to give me donations,” Marchese said.

Joey Piegsa, Unified Track committee member and senior said he is very excited for this year’s Polar Plunge.

“This will be my first year doing (Polar Plunge),” Piegsa said. “I’ve heard about other people who have done it before saying that it’s the best event of the year because it’s not only for a good cause but also the whole idea of jumping into a lake in March in the morning is just kinda fun.”

McGuire said she was very anxious the first time she participated in the Polar Plunge.

“I remember my first year, I was thinking that this was the last thing I wanted to do. They had to carve out ice of the lake and you would run around it a little, but it’s actually really fun building up the anticipation and running through,” McGuire said.

“There are people in the water in these intense suits to keep them from getting hypothermia who high five you and splash you and it makes your legs feel good because all your lactic acid is all jumbled around, so it actually makes you feel physically good and it’s just fun to do. There’s just so much excitement that it just makes it a cool experience.”

Marchese said she encourages everyone to participate.

She said, “Getting involved in Special Olympics was the best decision I’ve ever made. If you can just volunteer once or just participate once in one of the fundraising events, H it will change your life.”

Despite growing international threats, Carmel residents still feel safe REBECCA QIN, CAROLYN ZHANG // STORY

I

n recent years, a greater amount of conflicts have popped up all around the world. Terrorist attacks, gun violence and war crimes have all affected people in one way or another. This leads to one major question: What do people, based on their location, view as the most immediate international threat?

A recent survey conducted in July 2015 by the Pew Research Center shows the top global concerns that people living in certain countries feel are the most threatening. The results are rather surprising: climate change is seen as a top global threat; however, Americans, Europeans and Middle Easterners find that the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) is a more serious concern.

With the recent terrorist activity conducted by ISIS, these apprehensions are understandable.

Jill Grimes, AP Human Geography teacher, agrees with the sentiments of the majority of Americans.

“Anything to do with ISIS would definitely be a current threat,” Grimes said. “The scary thing about them is that they seem to be everywhere. It’s kind (of ) like a spiderweb, you don’t see them one day and the next day, they’re there, with a lot of links that maybe you didn’t see that worked overnight, and that’s what’s really scary.”

TERROR IN PERSPECTIVE: Sophomore Danika McClure identifies Qatar on a map of the world. Although the Middle East is generally associated with political turmoil, McClure said she did not experience insecurity while living there.

While many Americans would expect places near the Middle East to be teeming with danger, freshman Haniya Ansari thought the place she lived before she moved to the United States was relatively safe.

“I lived in Pakistan before I came here and I moved here when I was 7,” Ansari said. “There, I knew there was fighting, but it wasn’t even that bad. It was exactly like America there. I didn’t even know what terrorism was until I came here.”

When I live here, however, every night I make sure I lock all the doors and have to hold my purse close when I walk by myself.”

It might be worthwhile noting that, while Pakistan and Qatar are both located in the Middle East, they have very different backgrounds. Pakistan has a turmoil-ridden history and experiences conflict to this day.

On the other hand, Qatar, with its lands full of oil reserves, is one of the richest countries in the world with, according to the International Monetary Fund, the largest per capita GDP in the world.

From a different part of the world, English teacher Marie Satchivi said she grew up in Ivory Coast in Africa and later lived in parts of Europe and Canada as well with no immediate worry of international threat.

“When it comes to international terrorism, I have never lived in a really big city in Europe so the threat of those events were very minimal,” she said.

the hijackings of 9/11, according to the Pew Research Center, 68 percent of Americans still feel that terrorist groups such as ISIS are a looming threat.

“Think about how many of us get on a plane, every day, and we don’t think about those kind of things,” Grimes said. “Our own homeland security director talking about how in field tests, 95 percent they’ve failed to find explosives.

You put those two things together, and it becomes very real. It’s not something that happens in a James Bond movie anymore, or happens over there. It very well could happen over here.

“We tend to box people into categories, when we’re afraid without really getting to know individuals and that perpetuates more fear, more danger, and more aggression,” Grimes said. “Fear creates a lot of problems.”

Satchivi said she also holds a similar approach.

“I do understand how some people who have never had the chance to mingle with people from different cultures can easily feel unsafe in the world. ISIS is a serious threat for

anybody on earth,” she said.

Even so, people who live closer to homes of ISIS fundamentalists don’t always feel threatened.

“The Qataris definitely view the extremists as something to look down upon and they give them a bad reputation, just like Americans who do disgraceful things give Americans bad reputations,” McClure said. “The Sheikh, who runs the country, is super involved with keeping peace in (the Middle East) and also keeping peace with his brothers in America, so he’s definitely doing a great job protecting everyone.”

While many live in continual fear in other parts of the world, Satchivi said she trusts in her faith to get on.

“It’s more of a matter of being a person who has faith and believing that I will only die when it’s my day to die,” she said. “I am also very much aware of the fact that anything can happen at any time.

Like somebody with a mental illness can just go wild and kill somebody around me, or even kill me as well. I am very much aware of that, but I don’t worry about it.”

On a local level, Carmel residents generally feel very safe in their area, at least regarding violence. Satchivi said she grew more aware of natural disasters such as tornadoes and hurricanes than of terrorism and violence.

“In Carmel, I will be more worried about natural disasters than any international threats,” Satchivi said.

McClure also thought Carmel was safer compared to other cities.

She said, “Carmel is definitely one of the safest areas in Indiana, so I don’t have a reason to feel unsafe at all.”

Grimes agreed. “We live in a nice ‘ol Carmel bubble here,” she said. “Bad things happen to other people, and we seem shocked if bad things happened to us. As a parent, you kinda want your kids to grow up that way. You want them to feel safe, you want them not to worry about ‘Dad’s gonna get on a plane for business, what’s gonna happen?’

Tempering that with the new reality that we have, that’s what’s tough.”

For the most part, Ansari, McClure, Satchivi and Grimes all believe Americans take sufficient security measures.

“I feel like there is better security here because they are ready for anything,” Ansari said. “Pakistan is a new country, so they aren’t really ready for anything, they’re still a developing country.”

Grimes said she was surprised at the ease of moving through airport security in other parts of the world.

“I was in Ireland two years ago, and they could tell we’re Americans, getting ready to take off our shoes and people looking at us like we were crazy,” she said. “In Indianapolis, we have to take off our shoes and belt.

They didn’t make us do any of that, and that was pretty shocking.”

McClure also experienced less security at the Qatar airport, and mentioned that it was a cultural thing as well.

“I think it’s just so unacceptable to do something negative or something terrorist-like there,” McClure said. “I could have all my laptops and I could wear a belt and keep all my shoes and they could just let me literally walk on through.”

Based on the lack of tight security around the world, Americans are taking big precautions in airports.

“It makes you wonder, what are we doing right and what are we doing to make us feel like we’re doing something,” Grimes said.

“Give a kid a bandage when they fall down when there’s no cut, but the bandage makes the kid feel better.

Satchivi said security is good, but the airport still contains risks.

Overall, Grimes and Satchivi said they believe people can overcome their fears regarding international threat.

“My grandparents grew up WWII generation, during a time when the enemy was very different,” Grimes said. “You could see the enemy. Today, when we look at the ethnic makeup of the United States, it looks very different. You don’t see the enemy as clearly as you did in 1941.”

Grimes said she thought a diverse society is very important in today’s life.

Grimes said, “In 1941, you knew who to be afraid of, even if you were over-simplifying it. So, sometimes people go to the other extreme, and they’re afraid of everybody.

“There’s going to be conflict in the world. We just have to make the H best choices in dealing with it.”

New mobile library to deliver books to Carmel’s West side, encourage teens to read more RAY JIANG // STORY

s

ince its debut on july 30, 2015, the Carmel Clay Public Library’s (CCPL) mobile library has been delivering books and DVDs to venues all across Clay Township.

“Basically, it’s a truck filled with books,” Veeda Scammahorn, CCPL teen library council member and junior, said.

The mobile library was originally created with the intention of providing library service to patrons living in the western half of Clay Township when the U.S. 31 highway was under further construction a few years ago, according to Nancy Newport, assistant director and manager of the mobile library.

Now, the mobile library has three stops per day, Monday through Friday. Its day stops include Clay Terrace, John W. Hensel Government Center, four Carmel retirement centers, Clay and Carmel Middle Schools and three churches: St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, Pilgrim Lutheran Church and Carmel United Methodist Preschool.

Starting this month, Newport and mobile library supervisor Emily Dickos-Carter said they will work with the Hamilton County Parks and Recreation Department to coordinate the servicing of four parks: Lawrence West Inlow Park, West Park, Founders Park and Carey Grove Park.

According to Dickos-Carter, the collection of books and DVDs available for check-out at the mobile library is exclusive to the mobile library and cannot be put on hold.

“So, you can’t go into our catalog and say, ‘Hey, I really want that book.

I’m going to put a hold on it and keep it forever,’” Dickos-Carter said.

CHS students who experienced, witnessed cyberbullying encourage others to speak up KELLY TRUAX // STORY

L

ast year, sophomore Catherine Baker attended a private school. At that school, Baker’s closest friends made a hate account about her by posting pictures and following Baker’s followers on her real account.

The fake account was made on Instagram, a site that gets around 75 million users a day.

They also bullied her in person at school. Because of this situation, Baker now attends CHS. “We knew each other too well.

Most of us had started out in (the) 3-year-old class. So, drama was bound to happen, and I just happened to be the target,” Baker said. “One time I was about to perform for my dance team, and a bunch of girls cornered me in the bathroom, and just started yelling in the bathroom. I don’t remember what they were yelling, but they borderline beat me up.”

Baker is not alone in her situation; many other high school students across the country are bullied throughout the school year.

A May 2013 study by the Cyberbullying Research Center showed nine percent of teenage girls have been bullied on Instagram.

According to a 2015 National Center for Educational Statistics (NCES) study, one in every four students reported they had been bullied in the past school year.

In another study, the NCES found 83 percent of victims said being bullied negatively impacted their self-esteem. Baker said she would fall in this group. “(Because of the bullying) I became more aware, and I started second guessing everything,” Baker said.

Officer Donald Schoeff said he is also new to CHS this year.

He said he used to be a Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) officer and regularly gave presentations about how to prevent and stop bullying to the students at Carmel Middle School.

From his experiences with teaching about bullying, Schoeff said, “As in any form of communication, I believe that we, as adults, need to make sure we help youth know how to appropriately communicate, whether it’s online or in person. We need to continue to guide students to make sure the kids are treating people with respect.”

“The problem with something that happens online, is that it isn’t something we hear and you can possibly forget about it,” Schoeff said. “It is revisited online every time someone sees it. I think cyberbullying is a much more dangerous kind of bullying because the victim can constantly revisit it.”

Ethan Counen said he witnessed the bullying incident.

“I didn’t know the people, but I was friends with Catherine and I knew what they were doing was wrong, so I told them to stop. I had learned that people actually do bad things and I thought it was terrible someone would do such a thing,” Counen said.

Baker said her other friends also noticed the account and took action like Counen.

“My exchange student’s brother was the one to inform my parents of the account. He had seen it within 20 minutes of it being created and he informed his sister, who then contacted my parents,” Baker said.

Baker said her situation did not revolve around just one form of bullying. In fact, she said she was bullied verbally, physically and online through social media.

“It was mostly verbal at school, (and) some physical. I just got shoved. Then it moved to social media,” she said.

Baker said not much action was taken to address the bullying at the time. Her former school had required more evidence than what was available to prove the bullying actually happened.

person and it usually stops. If it doesn’t, they could be suspended or expelled,” Cole said.

After the fake Instagram account had been noticed by her peers and former school’s staff, Baker said she was not the one to tell the principal; her friend did.

She said, “Someone else went to my principal because they told me that if I told, it would be worse off for me, so someone else told the principal about it, and I was like, ‘This is great; someone knows. This is going to end.’ But, it didn’t. The principal (was informed) that the Instagram account wasn’t enough evidence for him to expel the girls or suspend them, so nothing really happened at my old school,” Baker said.

Baker said that she was the only cyberbullying victim she knew of at the school at the time. She said there had been cases of other types of bullying before, but none of the cases involved the Internet.

“It made me really mad because (witnesses) only went to the principal after the account was deleted. Actually, a lot of people were afraid to stand up for me because they were so afraid of that group of girls. When the person did stand up for me they went anonymously, so the principal only had one person as a witness. The only problem, was that the account had already been deleted, so they weren’t able to track the IP address,” Baker said.

According to Baker, none of the girls got in trouble with the school, even after she transferred to CHS. However, Baker also said that the principal could only have had so much control on this case.

“Even though it was mostly happening on school grounds, none of the big stuff was happening during school. Like, the fight in the bathroom happened after school, and there were a few pictures posted during school, but I don’t know if it was the school’s responsibility or not. As I was leaving, the principal told me how this has happened in the past, and I remember standing there thinking, ‘Then why haven’t H you done anything?’”

DANCE MARATHON GRANOLA RECIPE This no-bake, delicious and energizing recipe make for perfect energy for CHS Dance Marathon KALEA MIAO // RECIPE With the CHS Dance Marathon coming up on Feb. 27, dancers will need lots of energy in order to prep for the six-hour event. The event will have refreshments, but here’s a recipe to make the night before. Ingredients like oatmeal and chia seeds provide energy while peanut butter provides protein, making these energy bites a recipe for success.

Ingredients: • 1 cup of dry oats, not instant oatmeal • 1 tablespoon of chia seeds • 1/4 cup of peanut butter • 1/4 cup of hazelnut chocolate spread • 1/3 cup of honey • 1/3 cup of unsweetened coconut • 1/2 cup of chocolate chips

Measure out the ingredients.

Place peanut butter and hazelnut chocolate spread in a separate bowl.

2. Microwave the spreads for 30 seconds to soften them. Do not microwave them for over a minute because the spreads will melt the chocolate.

3. Stir all the ingredients together in a medium bowl. Make sure the liquid ingredients are fully distributed.

4. Cover the bowl with Saran wrap.

5. Chill the mix in the fridge for at least half an hour.

6. Once chilled, scoop the mix into tablespoons and roll them into balls. We got 20 balls from the mix.

S

ophomore Isabella Simons’s life changed the day she was diagnosed with Craniopharyngioma.

It is a non-cancerous brain tumor that occurs most commonly in children. She was whisked off to Riley Children’s Hospital immediately after her diagnosis where she underwent treatment and surgery according to Simons via email. Many CHS students are already affiliated with Riley due to the annual CHS Dance Marathon.

However, few students actually know how the money raised by Riley is spent.

“The money raised by Carmel Dance Marathon goes to support the areas of greatest need at Riley,” Samantha Lame, Dance Marathon coordinator for the Riley Children’s Foundation said, “In total, all Riley Dance Marathons raised $5.5 million last year. Carmel’s Dance Marathon raised $342,741.”

Lame also says Dance Marathon helps patients at Riley in several ways other than just financially.

She said, “I can’t even begin to tell you how often I hear from kids, parents, and siblings about what

a difference Dance Marathon has made in their lives, specifically on the emotional side.” Simons agreed,“I think Dance Marathon affects patients and their families by showing how much the community cares through their dedication and support through the event.”

Chloe Wiser, sophomore and former Riley patient, said “The money that is raised [through Dance Marathon] can literally be a lifesaver for children and their family.”

In particular, Lame said that the money raised from events such as Dance Marathon is generally used to help finance medical research.

She said “For the past ten years, Carmel Dance Marathon’s money has been paired with IU’s Dance Marathon money to support the Ryan White Center for Pediatric Infectious Disease and Infectious Disease research.”

In addition, Lame said “Dance Marathon is able to touch patients through research being done in the Wells Center for Pediatric Research.”

However, Lame said, “This year all Dance Marathons will be expanding their area of support. 75 percent of the funds raised this year will support research and 25 percent will be supporting clinical programming. This (expansion)means the money Carmel Dance Marathon

Students such as Simons and Wiser said they felt their favorite things about Riley weren’t research related but the personal care offered

by Riley’s staff.

“My favorite part about Riley was how warm and welcoming the staff was,” Wiser said.

Simons agreed, “You can tell that they [Riley staff] care about you as a patient and a person. They really want to help you and make you feel comfortable.”

Both students agreed that this personal care differentiated Riley from other hospitals. “Riley is different from other hospitals because it truly cares about each patient,” Simons said. “On Halloween, after my surgery, doctors and nurses dressed up in costumes and went room to room to bring patients goodies to celebrate the holiday.”

Wiser said, “I’ve been to other hospitals but Riley stands out in their relationships with their patients.” In short, both Wiser and Simons agreed what truly differentiated Riley was the staff who worked there.

Lame said the money raised from Dance Marathon addressed this need.

“Students at CHS can help support kids at Riley by joining clubs like Project Sunshine that make craft kits to help young patients stay positive,” Simons said.

Wiser said one of the best things other CHS students could do is simply just provide moral support to students that are undergoing treatment at Riley.

“The best thing CHS students can do for children going through treatment at Riley is to not make them feel like they have to be embarrassed about it,” she said.

While fundraising events for Riley such as Dance Marathon do have a financial impact in many

ways the emotional and mental effects of such events are far greater.

“Events like Dance Marathon help patients like me get better because they show how much the community cares about sick children,” Simons said. “I am so grateful for the exceptional care I received at Riley and I hope many CHS students will get involved with H Dance Marathon.”

nter the sliding doors, and a visitor is confronted by nurses and doctors rushing through hallways adorned with rainforest decorations and painted tropical scenes. A nurse dressed in pastel scrubs wheels a patient from his room for a blood test to track the effect of his medication on the HIV in his bloodstream; a member of the infectious disease team travels to another center of the hospital to consult with the parents of a patient who is suffering from an infection uncovered by an oncologist on a prior visit; a child life specialist speaks with a patient who lives in the hospital about how she passes her time.

Dance Marathon participants will dance for six hours on Feb. 27 to raise money for Riley Children’s Hospital.

Always close to capacity, the Ryan White Center for Pediatric Infectious Disease is home to a variety of Riley patients ranging from newborns to some even beyond the age of 18, as the infectious disease team, according to its website, provides “inpatient care for nearly a thousand children a year and consult with all pediatric and surgical departments within Riley Hospital.” What makes the center even more unique is that it receives funds raised at Carmel Dance Marathon (CDM) through the service work of those at CHS. And while the funds from this year’s CDM will be allocated in different ways, the spirit of CHS students who volunteer their time

to help Riley and other charitable organizations remains. However, the sense of service present at CHS is not necessarily evident elsewhere.

According to a survey by Nesta, an independent charity based in England, published in November, 69 percent of those surveyed said “volunteers have an important role to play in supporting public services;” however, the findings reflected that the average respondent only spent “one hour 47 minutes volunteering each week compared to 12 hours 40 minutes watching TV” with less time spent only “in the gym (one hour 28 minutes) and queuing for coffee (45 minutes).” The results of this survey mirrored data gathered

by the Corporation of National and Community Service over the span of a two-year period which found that between 2011 and 2013, only 28.2 percent of Indiana residents volunteered, a minority that ranked Indiana as the 23rd in the nation according to volunteering rates.

Despite the low national ranking, Sam Johnson, Cabinet member and sophomore, said the absence of motivation manifested in population according Nesta’s survey is not the case at CHS as a large majority of students here are involved in charity work. He said he got involved with Cabinet because he thought the group would give him “the best opportunity to make the greatest difference in the lives of Riley kids.

“I would think that people at Carmel High School would (volunteer more in comparison to the general population) because we live in a great city and have comforts that we should be thankful for that others do not,” Johnson said. “I think that this along with the fact that there are so many clubs and activities that do charitable and volunteer work that it is very easy to get involved.”

Leslie Brown, a sponsor of the GKOM program, said she agreed that the students of CHS try to get involved as she reasoned those who have been helped try to help in return.

“Kids want to help other kids at this school,” Brown said. “It’s just a very positive environment, and kids see that other kids enjoy doing (GKOM), and I really think that the biggest thing is that because of the

positive mentoring experience that people experienced as freshmen, they want to pay that forward.”

So while the Bureau of Labor Statistics Economic published a news release in February that found teenagers aged 16 to 19 had a volunteer rate of only 26.1 percent, Johnson said he believes CHS is an anomaly with a higher rate when it comes to volunteering as he cited CDM as an opportunity for students to give back to the community.

Johnson, who participated in and helps plan fundraisers for CDM, said, “(It stands out to me) how consistently high school kids (at this school) and others are willing to give up their time and efforts when they could be doing other things to help sick kids so (these patients) can have a chance to live an illness-free life. (CDM) is a huge fundraiser for Riley Children’s hospital where you raise money for the kids and stand for a set amount of hours for the kids who can’t...It was one of the most amazing experiences.”

Melissa Browning, Cabinet member and senior, said she agreed CDM allows for a lot of students at CHS to get involved in volunteering, whether it be through fundraising online or door-to-door or participating in one of the House events, as the funds raised at these events supplement the final total presented at CDM. These events for CDM helped people like Browning see the value in volunteering to help others. “(Cabinet doesn’t) just work (to raise money) in February and the few days leading up to CDM. We put

on events year-round and fundraise year-round for CDM and the kids at Riley,” Browning said. “Carmel Dance Marathon has shaped my entire high school experience. I fell in love with service and decided to join Cabinet and dedicate all my time to raising money for Riley and making CDM great.”

That sense of service is reflected by the data. For example, the Riley Children’s Foundation is supported by 65 high school dance marathons.

According to the foundation’s website, the CHS Dance Marathon is the nation’s largest high school dance marathon, with over 1,000 student dancers standing for six hours at the event last year on Feb. 21. It “has raised over $1.6 million for the Ryan White Center of Infectious Disease at Riley Hospital.”

Nesta’s survey also reported that, “a third (of participants said) nothing would incentivise them to spend more time supporting (the community),” but Isabella Liu, NHS treasurer and senior, said while she recognizes reasons students might choose not to volunteer, she said everyone can learn something from service work.

“All we’re trying to do is help the kids at Riley, whether that means a total increase (in funds raised) or not.

We give it all we’ve got all year long, and that helps us raise as much as we can,” Browning said. “Last year we went to Riley and painted murals on the walls of where kids wait to hear about treatment, their health news, etc.

It was amazing to physically be in the same place as these kids and knowing that simply by painting a goofy farm mural on the wall we could give them a smile. It’s things like that that fuel me to give my all to CDM.” Rebecca Burnham, Cabinet member and senior, said she also agrees that service work positively impacted her life and plans to further her involvement in volunteering beyond her high school years.

“I think that learning to be bigger than yourself and helping others has made me a better person and has inspired me to serve for the rest of my life,” Burnham said. “I’m really excited for Dance Marathon. It will be wonderful to see all of our hard work pay off in the best way possible. I always look forward to the Riley stories where I see how beneficial everything we do is. This year a new event, Runway for Riley, was really impactful because we

got to hear different Riley stories from different points of view and it shows that hard work pays off.”

Browning said Dance Marathon and experience with volunteering through Cabinet even inspire some CHS students to pursue careers in charity-focused fields.

“I know I’ll continue to serve and do Dance Marathon throughout college,” Browning said. “It has definitely affected a lot of former Cabinet members as a lot of them have gone into majoring in non-profit business management.”

Liu said, “One of the highlights of being NHS treasurer is the liberty that I can take with volunteering. Not only do I get to attend amazing events put on by the community, but I am able to head and plan them at CHS as well.

It’s an invaluable planning experience, and it allows me to do even more to help others. Additionally, I am very grateful to be surrounded by sponsors and peers who push me to be my best.

Together, we all strive to improve the community and broaden our experiences by volunteering. I couldn’t have wished for a better way to end my senior year than strengthening this attitude towards volunteering.”

As volunteering remains an important aspect of CHS’ identity, Johnson said it is important to keep the cause one is working for in mind at all times, even past high school. “(Charity work) will establish a lifelong love for helping people that will make me a more service-minded person in the rest of my life,” Johnson said. “I will definitely continue service after high school because Dance Marathon has showed me that a small group of determined people can make an enormous difference. So I will take that and apply it to the rest H of my life.”

CHS students enjoy growing influence of Indian culture in American media

hen junior Veeda Scammahorn went to her friend’s birthday party in seventh grade, they decided to watch a movie.

While the first option was “Harry Potter,” Scammahorn did not want to watch it because she had not finished the series yet. Her friend instead played a Bollywood movie, and while it was something new for Scammahorn, she said she got into it very easily.

Scammahorn said, “It reminded me of ‘High School Musical,’ but a hundred times better. It reminded me of a musical, but instead of just all the singing, there was also really good dancing from actors like Hrithik Roshan. It was a really fun and upbeat thing to watch, and I loved it.”

Bollywood is the name of the Indian movie industry based in Mumbai. Its growing influence in America can be seen with many

music videos such as Iggy Azalea’s “Bounce” and Coldplay’s “Hymn for the Weekend,” incorporating an Indian and Bollywood theme.

Additionally, many American TV shows and movies incorporate Bollywood in some way. Recently, Priyanka Chopra, a Bollywood actress starring in the American television series “Quantico,” won the 2016 People’s Choice Award for Favorite Actress in a New TV Series, making her the first South Asian actress to win a People’s Choice Award. In Carmel, the local Regal 17 movie theater has started to play more Bollywood movies, even putting cardboard cut-outs of movie characters near the concessions.

“It’s really exciting to be honest.

It shows that America is truly a melting pot, and there’s more than just one cultural aspect here,” Scammahorn said. “It doesn’t matter if (the movie’s) in a different

language or that it has a different race starring in it. It’s more about, ‘hey this is a really good movie, and we should go see that.’ It’s like watching a French film or a German film. People go see those movies, so why not Bollywood?”

Scammahorn was introduced to Bollywood by Indian junior Bhavi Sarda. Sarda said she grew up with Bollywood because that was what her parents always watched.

She said she shared her love for Bollywood with her friends because it’s a part of her childhood that is close to her, and her friends have generally enjoyed watching it.

“I think it’s just the singing and dancing as a part of the story and the movie. It kind of makes it a musical, but it’s not. Also, the plot lines aren’t unfamiliar because a lot of the Bollywood ones come from English movies, so it’s not something they haven’t seen before. It’s not foreign to them,” Sarda said.

Priyanka Chopra is not the first Bollywood actress to act in Hollywood. For example, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan starred in “Bride and Prejudice” and played the villain in “Pink Panther 2,” and Amitabh Bachchan played Meyer Wolfsheim in “The Great Gatsby.”

Ramu Chinthala, President of the India Association of Indianapolis (IAI), said that more TV shows are starting to have Indian characters.

He said Bollywood is not only influencing the media, but also are impacting American populace with the exposure to another culture.

Chinthala said, “I think it started in 1994, when Aishwarya Rai became Miss World. So we have the glamour and acting talent, and slowly the world is recognizing that.

That’s one of the reasons Priyanka Chopra won. Also A.R. Rahman won three Golden Globe Awards for Slumdog Millionaire. That itself indicates how much influence Bollywood music itself has in the world, not just in America.”

Bollywood’s influence has also helped spread Indian culture. The IAI helped in the creation of the Indian Cultural Festival at the Carmel Clay Public Library, whose target audience was children and families. The IAI also celebrates

India’s independence by hosting an India Day celebration at Monument Circle. Chinthala said they have been hosting the event for six years, and India Day has a growing number of non-Indian attendees every year. The IAI uses Bollywood as a way to educate people about the Indian culture.

Chinthala said, “We want to celebrate our traditions and culture, but we also want to outreach to the community to show our culture.

Bollywood is our medium to reach out to non-Indians easily. They are attracted to the music and dance, and through that they learn the Indian culture easily.”

Sarda and Chinthala both said that many people, Indians and nonIndians alike, are mainly attracted to the singing and dancing aspects of Bollywood. Scammahorn said she too likes that a lot of Bollywood music is upbeat and more about having fun, as well as the fact that “the slower songs have more of the voices and have a sweetness to them.” She said she also likes the fact that Bollywood movies are a lot deeper than Hollywood movies, and she likes that she can relate to the stories in Bollywood.

Students reflect on legacies left by recently deceased celebrities EMILY WORRELL // STORY

I

n the past month, the world lost singer and actor David Bowie along with actor Alan Rickman.

These two deaths happened within four days of each other. Both were 69 years old. Around the world, fans came together to mourn, decorating Bowie’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and creating a memorial for Rickman in King’s Cross’ Platform Nine and Three-Quarters. Among those mourning was Beatrice Feay, Bowie fan and sophomore. “(When I found out about Bowie’s death) I felt empty, almost, because I first heard him when I was in fifth grade, and he basically opened me up to the world of music and art and that’s what I wanted to do. I was like, ‘Whoa, look at this amazing thing that can change people; that’s what I want to do,’ and since fifth grade, I wanted to meet David Bowie and tell him how I feel. It was sort of like an elementary dream crushed,” Feay said.

Feay said she was drawn to Bowie immediately when she heard his music.

“I don’t want to say everything (drew me to him), but it did. It’s just a lot of his music is like nothing you’ve ever heard before. I mean some of it is kind of poppy, which is like, ‘Oh, I’ve heard something similar to this before,’ but then you listen to his deeper, more emotional songs, and it just hits you, and you’re all, ‘Wow, that’s something I’ve never heard before, and it’s gonna stick with me because it’s kind of scary.’ There are days where all I do is listen to him, or all I watch are movies that he’s in or that his music is in.”

However, Feay is not the only one coping with the loss of an inspirational figure. Sophomore Clara Martiny said she has also had to come to terms with the death of Rickman, an actor she said she admired ever since she first saw his work. “(The first film I saw him in) was before the ‘Harry Potter’ movies.

gonna live forever, and obviously no one lives forever, but you get this vision of them and you’re like, ‘Oh, they’re never gonna die, they’re still young,’ and it was just a huge shock,” Martiny said. “It was devastating because it’s almost as if you knew him personally because he played the parts so well.”

Local Indianapolis actress Taylor Poore said deaths of celebrities, particularly actors, can be truly horrible for their fans, because of how fans see celebrities on stage or on screen.

“I’ve had people talk to me after performances and tell me, like, ‘Oh, I really liked how you did this’ or even tell me that something about the show moved them,” Poore said.

“It’s really crazy; you don’t think you make that much of an impact, but the thing is, you’re delivering these stories and messages to people, and so people start associating you with the themes and ideas of the show, and you start to mean something to them.”

According to Poore, many people

say fans shouldn’t be upset at the death of a celebrity they haven’t met face-to-face or really known.

However, Martiny said she disagrees with this.

“I think that every person, whether you’ve met them or not, has the ability to change your life or to change your perspective, and if that person had done so, then it does affect you; and therefore when they do pass away, you’re obviously going to grieve, it’s not something you can just brush off if they’ve had such an emotional connection to you,” Martiny said.

Feay also said it is OK for fans to be upset at a celebrity’s death, but they should keep in mind that they don’t know the celebrity personally enough to really grieve.

“I wouldn’t go overboard, if you’ve never had that face to face connection. I can’t say that I would go overboard saying, ‘Oh my God, I’m gonna kill myself because David Bowie died.’ But I think it’s okay (to be upset), especially in music.

Dead or alive, Poore said these celebrities will live on in the hearts of their fans forever.

“I was actually a huge fan of Alan Rickman and David Bowie,” Poore said. “They both inspired me.

What I loved about David Bowie was how he did his own thing. He was one of the first musicians I really began to use to define myself and who I wanted to be. As for Alan Rickman, I fell in love with him with ‘Harry Potter.’ Even though they’re both gone now, I’m never going to forget what they’ve done for me and for my life. It’s one of those things where they’re gone, but never forgotten.”

VOLLEYING FOR RECOGNITION CHS men’s volleyball aims to win State and hopes to gain recognition ALINA HUSAIN // STORY

s march quickly approaches, so does the start of the men’s volleyball season.

Although its season is just beginning, the team is already thinking long term, beginning to have open gyms this month.

These open gyms will allow the coaches to get an idea of the team

in preparation for the high school season. According to Joel Kellum, volleyball player and junior, the team has their eyes set on winning the State Championship.

The team has big goals for 2016, making it even more clear how far they have come over the course of the last few years. The team began their 2008 season with only eight

players, and now eight years later they are considered one of the top men’s volleyball teams in Indiana.

However, the progress made by team has not come easily.

“This class of juniors has definitely become closer and our chemistry has gotten a lot better, just because we’ve been able to play year-round together,” Kellum said.

DO YOU THINK MEN’S VOLLEYBALL HAS GROWN? “Definitely. Last year we only graduated three seniors, this year we’re graduating three seniors and next year we’re probably going to be graduating 10 seniors. It has grown a lot and we have a good amount of freshmen coming in and wanting to play.

The sophomores this year are starting to develop and get really good, so I think volleyball has grown a lot because your coaches reached out to people and most of the juniors have reached out to the underclassmen and kids in our grade.”

According to Head Coach Jon Harmon, he has loved seeing the program grow more popular through the years, and he said he feels that going into this season, the team truly does have the potential to finish as State Champions.

“I think (the team) is the best in the state,” Harmon said via email. “We have built into these young men and they have made the decision to invest in the program. There are two or three other programs out there that are very good, but if we work hard, we should control our own future.”

The team practices three to four times a week all throughout the season, and in addition to this, most of the players play in club leagues year round.

Kellum said, “I really enjoy the club season because we get to meet lots of teams from all over.

We’ve met Canadian teams, teams from Long Island, Puerto Rico, California, and so it’s fun getting to know my teammates as well as the teams that we play.”

In addition to the club season incorporating teams from all over the world, Alex Schmitt, volleyball player and senior, said that the level

of play is increased during the travel season. Schmitt said that although he enjoys the school season, he prefers the club season because it is more intense and the team is able to play against and learn from teams at a higher level.

According to Harmon, the experience that the players get from playing year round, and the increased popularity of men’s volleyball have both been factors in the team’s improvement, but they still have a ways to go.

“We have depth at every position and don’t have any glaring weakness on the court, (but) we only have two seniors and none of our players have participated in a State Finals match so overcoming those nerves will be a challenge should we get that far,” said Harmon.

According to Nicholas “Nick” Baker, volleyball player and junior, in addition to improving the team’s game this season, the team also hopes to see some changes off the court. Since men’s volleyball is not an IHSAA sanctioned sport, it is not run by the Athletic Department at CHS, but rather by parents and coaches. In Baker’s opinion, one ramification of this is a smaller turnout at their games.

“Right now, we pretty much only have parents and the occasional friend coming to our games, but

I’m hoping it’ll grow to become like basketball or football where there’s a lot of people coming,” Baker said.

Along with having fewer fans at games, members of the team also feel that there is a lack of coverage of the team through the schools and in the media.

Harmon said, “First and foremost, Indiana is a basketball state when it comes to young male players. Very few people in Carmel realize it is one of the most popular sports worldwide, and is a varsity recognized sport in several states, including Illinois. And, we are not afforded the same publicity as sanctioned sports like the girl’s (volleyball) team.”

Although the team does hope for more recognitions this season, Harmon said that ultimately the team has much bigger goals, and believes they can win the State Championship. Men’s volleyball is a growing sport, and by winning State, it gains a lot more recognition than it has now. “(I want the players) simply to play their best volleyball and be competitive in every match they play. If they do those things, a State Championship is within their reach. The key is to focus their goals and attention on the little things and the big things will take care of H themselves,” Harmon said.

CHS athletes discuss whether stereotypically beneficial traits offer an advantage in sports LUKE GENTILE // STORY

or as long as Trenton Richardson, men’s varsity basketball player and senior, can remember, he has always been tall. “A lot of people are like, ‘How tall are you?’ or ‘Do you play basketball?’”

Richardson began to play in fourth grade. He said he saw the sport as fun and something he might be good at.

He said his height was also a factor, and it has helped him throughout his career, especially going into high school sports.

“I would say that (when you’re) younger, body type is really important. Coming into high school, (coaches) really look for people that have that ‘ideal’ body type. They know that in four years they can work on (the player’s) skill, but you can’t really teach height, size and what not,” Richardson said.

In April 2014, during a TED Talk, sports investigative reporter, David Epstein discussed the concept of “The Big Bang of Body Types Theory” that is apparent in athletics. He explained that the athletes of today are seemingly bigger, stronger and faster than they were a few decades ago. This can be seen at CHS as well by looking at the record wall in the varsity gymnasium; one can hardly see a record more than 20 years old, meaning athletes today have replaced those created in the past.

The premise of the theory is that, over the course of the last few decades, coaches and scouts have sought out athletes

who have ideal body types for their positions or sport.

Players like Richardson can easily identify that ideal body type.

“The stereotypical body type for a basketball player? I guess like 6’4” or 6’5”, of course taller and lengthier, longer arms and longer legs. So, I guess I’m a little taller than that. I have longer arms and longer legs, and then I guess overall basketball players are more lean (and) skinnier,” Richardson said.

Scott Heady, men’s varsity basketball head coach, said via email that he has, as Richardson described, “post players who are bigger and stronger (and) perimeter players who are less in size and strength but quicker and more skilled.”

Nick Mazza, varsity football player and senior, said coaches focus heavily on body types because they want to accomplish two things: improve the players and win.

“When coaches pick a position, if you’re 6’ and you don’t fit in your position based on your body type, they will try and move you to a position better suited for you. They know that will fit you in the future.”

Richardson also said winning is the driving force behind “The Big Bang of Body Types” at CHS. He said state championships are now expected at CHS, and this can drive coaches to try their best to build winning teams.

“If you want to win and you want to be a state champion, you have to have the right guys on your team. Body type, of course, is really important. As I was saying before, you can’t teach that, and that really helps in sports. Games can come down to winning matchups, and, obviously, the bigger guy has an advantage. Whoever is more properly suited for their position in their sport,

they have the advantage going in.

That can make the difference between winning and losing,” Richardson said.

However, not every varsity athlete at CHS fits the stereotypical body type.

One exception might be Olivia Christy, women’s varsity basketball player and junior. Christy said people are often shocked to find out that she has played varsity basketball for the last three years.

“I’ve been told multiple times I’m pretty short, like I’m on the shorter side of basketball. I don’t really like it,

but I don’t mind it anymore. There have been plenty of successful small basketball players. Many have gone off and done just fine,” Christy said.

“People are a little bit confused, but once they see me play, I don’t think it’s a big deal.”

Christy said the best athletes are made. She said at the end of the day, it all comes back to skill and training. “(Body type) doesn’t affect my position. When we’re both going for the same speed, quickness and ball handling, it all comes down to skill. So,

Mazza also said training can make all the difference for body types like his, which he considers undersized.

“For athletes, the emphasis has increased over the last few years on athletic performance. Body type has come more into play, and with that comes building mass. You can see this through all the (protein) supplements that have come out,” he said.

Richardson said that this type of weight training has also increased due to the recent emphasis on body type.

“Training is a lot more intense now,” he said. “We spend so much more time, effort, and focus on training, especially on building strength and speed, and we focus on other things with the end goals of building skill and winning.”

Heady said players today focus on “more sport-specific weight training and more off-season skill development.”

In all, Richardson said it is clear to see the “The Big Bang of Body Types Theory” in CHS sports, but that this is the only reason why athletes are getting bigger, stronger and faster.

“It can go either way,” he said. “I think people with the ‘ideal’ body type have the best opportunity, of course.

You know they have that potential to do great, but athletics also comes with a mindset. If you don’t come with that mindset, it’s not worth anything; and the people who don’t have that ‘ideal’ body type may have that mindset.” H ALLY RUSSELL // GRAPHIC BOSTON GLOBE // SOURCE

Statistics show that men in the NBA are chosen based on their advantageous physical traits

The Average American Man In the NBA, 7 foot players are relatively common.

One in ten players in the league are seven feet tall or taller.

However, in the general population, it is estimated that only 70 men in the United States between the ages of 20 and 40 years old are seven feet tall or taller, so men in this age and height demographic group have a 17% chance of being in the NBA. That means that if you gathered a group of six 7-foot tall, American men, statistically, one of them is already in the NBA.

ike many chs students, men’s varsity basketball player and senior Preston Flamion uses social media, but as Flamion is a spotlight player on the varsity basketball team, he has become more cautious of his posts. With over 400 followers on Twitter, such as Flamion’s head coach Scott Heady and other authoritative figures, he said he is careful about what he posts in order to represent himself and the school well. He said the coaches have informed the team of the consequences of misconduct on social media, but most of the athletes are already aware of how important it is to be cautious about what they post on their social media.

Flamion said, “Our coaches make sure to keep everyone informed on the consequences of misusing social media. They hold us accountable for anything that we post that misrepresents the team or the school, but I feel that my team and I are already well educated on social media.”

Along with Flamion, Sterling Brown, men’s varsity basketball team member and junior, said the team is fully aware of the consequences. Unlike many student athletes, Brown has chosen not to be on social media. He said there is a spotlight on the basketball team so they have to be extra cautious of what they say.

“The coaches talk with us and teach us how to use social

media appropriately. I feel that the team is well aware of how to represent Carmel and the basketball team. I don’t personally have social media, but I know you have to be responsible with what you post,” Brown said.

Athletics Director Jim Inkseep said social media can be a huge responsibility for student athletes and he is impressed with how well the athletes handle it.

He said athletes don’t have as much freedom to express themselves as other students at CHS. Inskeep said the administration asks the coaches to address social media and to be aware that there are people out there trying to twist and turn what they are saying.

He said, “As administration we are not trying to squash their fun, but any time you turn on ESPN there will be some reference to an athlete saying something on Twitter.

It’s a huge responsibility for our student athletes at an early age. Our responsibility as adults is to help them when they mess up and to teach them about the consequences.”

A couple of years ago, the district created a social media policy for all the schools in the district. This was created due to the rising interest and use in social media.

Inskeep said the policy was specifically created for clubs and extracurriculars. It states that any act “unbecoming” of a greyhound may result in suspension or removal from one’s club or team.

“When we created this policy we left it as a broad statement because over the last three to four years not one instance seems to be the same. We haven’t had to remove anyone from a program, but we have faced suspensions from games or practices. My preference is to not suspend the athletes, but rather educate them and then monitor their posts,” Inskeep said.

Along with having to be cautious of social media, athletes like Flamion and Brown are expected to talk to media. CHS does not require any training, but coaches and administration are available to assist student athletes. Flamion said that he feels pretty educated on talking to media.

Flamion said, “I think that we are already well enough aware of how the media and social media work. Being further educated would possibly prove to be a waste of time for the majority of us.”

Unlike Flamion, however, Brown said some of his team members, particularly the younger ones, could benefit from being further educated on how to talk to the media.

“This way, when it is time for them to talk to media, they are confident in their abilities,” Brown said.

He said, “I think our student athletes watch a lot of interviews from college and professional athletes and they see that they are positive and deferring credit to their teammates. When I read quotes from our student athletes, there is a lot of positive talk, and when something negative comes up, they do a good job at being able to avoid talking about it. That is exactly what

we ask of them and that shows a lot of maturity.”

Inskeep said sometimes social media can come off as negative for student athletes at CHS. He said while the school does not promote using social media, it can be beneficial at times when students are trying to inform other students of what activities are taking place at the school.

“A lot of our athletes use social media to pump up teammates and celebrate wins,” Inskeep said. “Twitter has allowed our students and student athletes to see what other clubs and programs are doing and how to be H supportive of other things in our school.”

CDM should consider sharing funds with other charities in addition to Riley Children’s Foundation.

U

ndeniably one of the biggest events at this school every year, the Carmel Dance Marathon (CDM) continues to set and break its own record for the total amount raised by the school—last year’s record of $342,741.10 surpassed the previous year by about $20,000. The Riley Children’s Foundation website confirms this accomplishment by stating that CDM is currently the largest high school dance marathon in the country.

Indeed, the total amount of money raised by CDM has grown every year since its debut in 2006 in honor of Ashley Louise Crouse ‘02, who was very involved with IU’s Dance Marathon. CDM has achieved a cumulative total of over $1.6 million over its 10 years in existence.

Each year, we can thank more than 1,000 dedicated students here—from the members of the executive council to the dancers who do it for the kids (FTK)—for the continued support throughout the entire school year that has allowed for the event to culminate into what it has become today. CDM’s tradition of supporting Riley in Crouse’s memory is certainly great, and so is the cause.

Clearly, the dedication and fortune of CHS students and the surrounding community allow for huge sums of money to be collected. There is no doubt that Riley Children’s Hospital is a worthy recipient of students’ time and donations. Riley uses donations for medical research, state-of-the-art facilities, equipment and much more to improve its service. However, with this amount of passion and success and given the fact that CDM has successfully passed the decade mark and is clearly here to stay, it’s time

for CDM organizers to consider expanding their reach and supporting more than one charity.

With over 60 high schools, colleges and even middle schools in Indiana hosting dance marathons benefiting Riley, the foundation already receives millions of dollars in donations each year. Because of this and the fact that CDM has raised annual totals over $300,000 in recent years, CDM can definitely afford to share portions of the money raised with less popular charities while still giving a sizeable chunk to Riley in Crouse’s honor. Other schools have already set the lead on this. For example, Northwestern University’s Dance Marathon, the fourth largest student-run dance marathon in the world, has cumulatively raised millions of dollars in the past 40 years, which have benefited over 30 different organizations. Regardless of whether the charities donated to are local or more well-known, if we follow Northwestern’s example, not only would it financially help out more charities, but it could also bring some public attention to their causes and further help them out, spreading the love and having a greater impact.

We acknowledge that this year, just like every year, the student government has certainly done a great job to support additional worthy causes, as seen at Tailgate for Life, which donated to the American Cancer Society; Empty Bowls, which donated to Second Helpings; and the recent Disco Dance, which donated to Special Olympics. But unlike these other worthy events, CDM brings with it an added sense of urgency, attention and prestige. Why not use this opportunity to not only continue to support Riley at an extremely high level but H also showcase other charities as well?

NOT EVERYTHING CAUSES CANCER

We should be aware of the severity of some illnesses but not constantly fearing getting them.

O

ver the course of my life i’ve lost an uncle, great uncle, great aunt and grandma all due to chronic illnesses.

They somehow seem to come out of nowhere. It’s just an average week, and then when you get a phone call, and suddenly everything that seemed normal isn’t so normal anymore. But the truth is that they don’t come out of nowhere.

Somewhere, somehow, just the perfect amount of mutated cells combine and multiply exponentially, just enough to cause the perfect storm, and suddenly, everything changes, overthinking everything and anything. Putting blame on occurrences doesn’t add up like a perfect algebraic equation. It’s just life.

Everything seems to be going wrong, as if there’s not even a particle of light at the end of this dark, draining tunnel.

Chronic illnesses have no cure or cause, so why do we spend so much time stressing over parabens and hot dogs and simple things that may or may not cause them? A lot of research has been conducted and introduced to the world regarding how chronic illnesses, such as cancer, start and spread and how one may possibly prevent such a matter from occurring.

The fact of the matter is that we, at this point in time, don’t know how it starts or how to stop it. Stressing yourself out about such chronic illnesses is painful itself and completely unnecessary.

Living your life in fear of contracting a lifethreatening illness isn’t a way to live life. Remembering to take each day as it is and live in the moment is the

According to the American Cancer Society, about one in two men and one in three women will get cancer during the duration of their life. Regardless of what kind of cancer it is, there is a multitude of issues with people knowing these statistics. It can cause extreme sources of fear and anger that don’t dictate how lives will be lead. People aren’t just statistics; they have brains and feelings and lives to live. The world has become a place where people criticize others on their food choices because a certain food has been “proven” to cause cancerous cells to form. But these statistics dictate nothing about specific people in the world. If you sit 10 men down, it doesn’t automatically mean that half of them will get cancer. Few, or even all of them may; the truth is that we don’t know. So why do we stress ourselves out about such nonsense that has no use to us furthering our lives? If these statistics are something you are interested in researching, maybe choose a career path that allows you to study such details and become educated as to why certain foods have been linked to cancerous cells or combat these cells. It is so easy to throw around such facts without probable cause, and all it does is cause fear, tension and unnecessary aggravation.

The worst thing that we can do is scare ourselves into thinking that we are going to die if we eat a hot dog or sit in the sun for 10 minutes a day in the summer. There is so much in life to live, and thinking that we are going to solve everything by not eating certain things or not doing certain activities is useless. Living life in fear of contracting such illnesses is exhausting. Remembering to take life day by day, living a balanced, healthy lifestyle by making appropriate food choices, exercising regularly and getting enough sleep are so much better than freaking out. Living in the moment and not stressing out about every little thing that may go wrong is so much better than restricting yourself or not allowing yourself to live life because of the fear H of something not in your control.

While sales of vinyls are on the rise, problems with accessibility make them less practical than digital files.

F

or my 17th birthday, i received an orange record player and vinyls of my two favorite bands, Arctic Monkeys and Walk the Moon. I had heard vinyls are the only way to listen to music the way the artist intended it, and I was excited to hear what the fuss was about. However, I was immediately disappointed. While I loved my record player, the music on it sounded no more high-quality than the MP3s I had on my phone. I had been misinformed, and clearly so had many others. So I think it’s time to set the record straight, pun intended.

Many music lovers say vinyls are superior to digital files such as MP3s and M4As, because digital music files are compressed so they don’t take up as much space. This process is known to remove natural texture and dynamics, making tracks sound different than the artist intended. However, while it’s true vinyls do not need to be compressed, many modern vinyls are compressed anyway due to changes in the way music is recorded.

Furthermore, some genres of music with dramatic highs and lows, like electronic music, don’t translate well to vinyl. Plus, longer albums are expensive to press. In order to fit it on the record, the grooves in the vinyl would need to be too skinny for quality sound, and multiple records would be needed.

That would increase the cost for the consumer.

In addition, vinyls are fragile. It is almost impossible to protect a record from dust and other surface

impurities entirely. Even with careful maintenance, records are prone to scratching, skipping and popping. On the flip side, this doesn’t happen to digital files. They are also infinitely more portable than vinyls and are more accessible due to their cheaper prices. New vinyls can cost as much as $40 and may need to be replaced with frequent use, while digital albums cost around $8.99 and will be in your library forever.

While on the surface vinyls may seem of higher quality than digital music, the truth is that the differences in quality are usually due more to the quality of the speakers used than the inherent quality of the tracks.

Still, record players have a place in modern music. The real joy of owning a record player isn’t its superior quality, but the ritual of it, removing the record from its sleeve and listening to the album all the way through. It’s an experience I highly recommend to anyone who loves music. Records are also a neat collectors’ item. With blown up album art and extras like liner notes, they are fun to own, especially if you love that specific album.

Plus, vinyl’s characteristically “warm” sound plays to the natural range of human hearing, making it pleasing to the ears.

For me, vinyls are an investment. They’re something to purchase when I know I like the artist and the album. Digital files, on the other hand, are better suited for music discovery, a cheap and accessible way to hear new albums I might buy a vinyl of in the future.

In the end it all comes down to preference.

Are you the sort of person who likes to keep your music collection updated with the newest songs?

Do you like to take your music collection with you everywhere you go? If that’s the case, vinyl might not be for you. But if you love an album enough to want to listen to it again and again, or you’re interested in hearing an album the way its artist intended it to be heard, or even if you want to listen to music in a new H way, why not give vinyl a try?

Lack of diversity in this year’s Oscars nominees demonstrates the need for change.

It’s the hashtag we have all seen at some point these past couple of weeks as the lack of diversity in this year’s Oscar nominees has been scrutinized by millions, including actors and actresses themselves. According to world-renowned actor Will Smith, the lack of a diversity in this year’s nominees portrays “a regressive slide towards racial and religious disharmony.” I couldn’t have said it better myself.

In fact, in all the lead categories—all four acting categories, picture and best actor, only Mexicanborn director Alejandro G. Iñárritu helps to add to the “diversity” that the Oscars is ideally supposed to represent. So, where does this issue, of a lack of different races in several fields of study, stem from?

The answer is simple—our society today.

Although many do not take notice of it, racism in both the workforce and everyday life is an inherent part of society today. Even though much of the attention that has been brought to light due to the Oscars has centered around African-Americans, it is important to note the suppression of other minority races in our country today as well—Asians, Hispanics and basically any other race that you can think of that’s non-European. This concept of underlying racial tension is referred to as “institutional racism” and can be applied to most fields of study, including the recent events brought forward by the upcoming Oscars, as well as several different races.

For African-Americans, according to a study conducted by the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, only five of the 107 directors for the top 100 films of 2014 were African-American.

Similarly, with regards to Hispanic-Americans, according to a study conducted by Gallup in June of 2015, nearly 25 percent of Hispanics felt or have experienced discrimination within the past month at public venues, due to their race.

Then again, with Asian-Americans, although as of 2011 Asians represented nearly 5 percent of the U.S. population, they only can be accounted for a mere 2 percent of all television representations—a literal example of the suppression of minority races in this industry, an issue that can’t be fixed with a simple and clear-cut solution.

From our current standing, the only reasonable and somewhat effective solution, if embraced by Americans as a whole, would be to have a change of heart. Even though it may seem nearly impossible to change the beliefs of those that have those stereotypical ideals engraved into their brains, not all African-Americans are criminals, not all Hispanics got to the United States illegally and not all Asians are smart. It’s important to realize these notions are wrong, outdated and outright biased.

As institutional racism begins to decrease, so will the lack of diversity in many different fields of study—including the acting industry. Our nation was built on the concept of “a country of immigrants,” and that mentality still has to be evident in our nation today. The lack of actors of different races in this year’s Oscars helps to serve as evidence in all the work that is yet to be done, and the amount of progress that is left to be made.

What do I urge you to do? Do what you believe is best for you, and will allow you to raise awareness for the lack of diversity not only in the Oscars, but everyday social and public venues as well. If this means not watching the Oscars and advocating for change in your everyday life or not boycotting the Oscars but changing the values you abide by, then so be it. Embody the change, be the change and spread the change—progress is H on the horizon.

REMEMBER WHO WE ARE

In light of issues discussed in political election, people should recall America’s optimistic culture.

A

s i see more politics creeping into the news each day, I can’t help but cringe. Don’t get me wrong; this election will be one of the most critical decisions we’ve made as a nation in a long time. It will also be the first time I get to put my ballot in the box. But all the finger-pointing, name-calling and half-earnest promises being thrown around don’t make our government or this election very attractive. Candidates are constantly letting the public know what we are in need of as a country. It’s like a constant commercial, luring Americans into thinking their country is lacking something essential to our existence.

But no matter who takes office, no matter what that person says our country needs and no matter what he or she tries to provide for us, we’ll already have all that we need. They may be intangible, but our values and unique characteristics are the most important assets the United States possesses and must be tapped in order to really change our country for the better.

For the most part, we Americans are a pretty optimistic bunch. A Pew Research study from the spring of 2015 showed that people in poorer countries were more optimistic than those in more wealthy countries. The United States, however, is an exception. We have a surprisingly high rate of optimism relative to our wealth sector. About 41 percent of Americans described their day as “a particularly good day” while just 21 percent of Germans and 27 percent of British expressed the same optimism on a given day. In another study conducted

by Pew, Americans stood out from 44 other countries with the highest percentage of people who believed that working hard was crucial to success by over 10 percent. Our relentless individualism and optimism are shown through America’s

famous spirit of innovation and opportunity, which, over time, have become our biggest strengths. With a history so rich in overcoming crisis, war, economic strife and corruption, it makes me proud to say that we are still hopeful for tomorrow, striving to be better today.

We have accomplished so much in the past seven years as a country, and it would be illogical to pin all of our downfalls and imperfections on one presidency. It is also irrational for a candidate to promise a fix to problems that have always plagued us as a nation. What I wish I heard more as a future voter and future member of a new American generation is reassurance that not everything has gone astray in this country. The values that make us who we are and give us our unique, bright, hopeful place in the world are the characteristics that make me proud to be American. And they are still very alive in us today. I hope that in that midst of the election madness we can remember that at the core, we don’t need to be fixed by politicians; we already have what it H takes to be better.

HEADING A NEW HAT POLICY

Administrators should rethink the outdated hat policy.

ach day this winter, thousands of students pile into CHS in coats, gloves, scarves and hats—the latter of which they are immediately told to remove. According to the dress code in the CHS pathways, “the wearing of hats in the building during the school day will not be permitted. Hats, bandanas or similar head apparel are to be removed prior to entering the building.” The reasoning, or lack thereof, behind this policy simply does not make sense. If a student is cold during the winter months, why shouldn’t they be allowed a small warm garment?

Many argue the reason this policy is kept in place is that students could be concealing illegal substances or weapons in their hats. If that is really the reason, shouldn’t backpacks also be banned? What about shoes? Or lockers?

Or pockets? Weapons and substances can be snuck in whether or not students are wearing hats; in fact, it would probably be easier for students to sneak them in pockets or backpacks, so a ban on pockets would honestly be more effective than a hat ban in reducing illegal substances in the school. It’s ridiculous that people think a ban on hats will stop weapons and drugs from entering the premises.

Another concern is that people use hats to identify certain gangs, causing hats to therefore be associated with gang activity. However, CHS and the city of Carmel itself don’t seem to have problems with gang activity or gang violence. According to Neighbor Scout, a website which publicizes crime rates for cities across the U.S., Carmel is safer than 75 percent of the cities and towns in the U.S. and is also ranked among the top 100 safest cities in the country. Therefore, gang activity really isn’t much of a worry in this area, and refusing to allow students to wear hats because of a problem that is not at all prominent in Carmel is just an extraneous solution to a problem that doesn’t really exist.

Others say it is a matter of respect and etiquette to remove hats when entering a building. But that rule is outdated and not often recognized in modern society. Hats are allowed in most places, including stores, restaurants and theaters. There really aren’t any places besides school that have strict bans on wearing hats. When we keep this rule about hats in place, we make our school system and schools in general appear like they haven’t caught up to the modern era, which is absolutely not the message a school should give off.

across the nation involving technology, testing and other areas that affect the lives of students, we don’t want people to think schools are still in the dark ages based on their medieval policy regarding the wearing of hats within the building.

Besides, hats are a staple of fashion and always have been. From the cloche hats of the 1920s to the fedoras of the 1950s, hats have played a huge role in distinguishing characteristics of fashion for decades and are simply a force that cannot be stopped.

And a policy that isn’t enforced isn’t really a policy at all. Day in and day out, I see students wearing hats during the school day and not getting caught or punished for it. Clearly the issue is either a part of the policy teachers don’t know about or don’t care enough about to enforce properly. If this ridiculous rule is going to broken time after time without consequence, why keep it around?

The hat policy at CHS is unnecessary, unenforced and unfounded by any principle of safety or etiquette.

As these cold winter months continue, hopefully administrators will consider changing this policy and letting their students stay warm instead of clinging to an archaic policy that most students and teachers ignore anyway. Q&A with Gabi Crowley What inspired you to be involved in CHS Dance Marathon?

First of all, I knew a lot of people in it, and they were like, my idols in life because they were all really good people.

They told me to do Dance Marathon, and at first I was the freshman who was hesitant, like everyone else. I’m so happy that I did it because it was definitely a life changing day, hearing the Riley stories of kids and seeing how they felt so special there. It was so cool to see how much you can do. I think a lot of people just underestimate the things you can do in high school. Doing Dance Marathon is just a really cool thing to be involved in.

What do you think makes a successful CHS Dance Marathon?

When student’s lives are changed. I don’t think it has anything to do with the

amount we raise. I think it’s really cool to see people react to it and say that it changed their life. If we just raise the money that wouldn’t mean anything to anyone. I think it’s really cool to see the school that doesn’t always get to do a lot of charity work and I think students underestimate themselves. Doing that kind of opens their eyes to what they can do.

What do you think you will take away from this opportunity to lead this event?

I do not want to leave. I start crying when I talk about it. I’ve learned so much from this, by giving back and focusing on others. I literally was talking to Bruce Wolf about how I feel like I don’t have to go to college with the amount of businesses I’ve had to talk to for donations. Making a phone call is one of my daily activities.

You just learn so much about life that it’s such an awesome experience. I would totally try to convince anyone to do it.

What is your favorite activity or part of CHS Dance Marathon?

Definitely the Riley Stories because I think it’s so cool, and it really hits home why we are all there. My second favorite part is the last part of the marathon. It’s where we all stand in a circle and honor Ashley Crouse … I think it’s just so cool to see why we are all there and that a student just like all of us had a passion, just as big as all of us, if not way bigger.

It’s crazy to see the impact she made on the world.
