You have accomplished so much in a short four years at Carmel High School. Whether you have accomplished a certain GPA, led your favorite club, made a certain team or have been the epitome of a Greyhound, we are so proud of you. As you move forward to wherever you are headed, remember you are prepared for what life throws at you. The skills you have developed over the last four years will provide you opportunities to find new challenges, successes, and adventures. We encourage you to take advantage of those opportunities and push through to make a difference in our society.

You can pick up your yearbook at C145 until May 18.

I tell my friends and family often that greatness walks the hallways at CHS every day. It is truly something I think about on a daily basis as your principal. However, I know your greatest accomplishments are yet to come. Go and make a difference within our community, our state, our nation and our world. I will never forget you as my first graduating class. It has been my honor to be a part of your journey.

As you leave Carmel High School, please know you have left your imprint during your time here.

Dear Alleson,

Words cannot even express how proud of you I am. As you embark on this final chapter of high school, I hope you take a moment to reflect on how far you have come.

When you started high school, I remember you were unsure of how you would fit into a school that was so big. That doubt quickly faded away as you found community in the marching band and quickly paved your own path. I will always cherish when our winter guard experiences overlapped for two years and how fun it was for us to perform at community night together. I think that being in color guard together and being able to connect through this activity has also made us closer as sisters.

I know that sometimes you may feel like you are “following in my footsteps,” but that is simply not true. We might have similar interests, but you have made your journey completely your own and have shone so brightly in the process. You are where you are today, getting ready to graduate and attend Indiana University, because of your hard work and dedication. This accomplishment is all yours and I hope you know that you deserve all of it.

I am so incredibly proud of how far you have come. You have grown so much as a leader and as a person these past four years, and I am so honored to have been a part of this journey with you.

Looking back on these four years, it’s hard to believe that they’re finally coming to an end. It’s so weird to think that just six years ago, you were also walking these halls and going through the same struggles as me. I mean, look at you now. You’re going to grad school in California, which is halfway across the nation, and pursuing your passion.

Honestly, looking at your high school journey has inspired me to become the person I am today.

Through color guard, I met some of my best friends and learned how to be a role model and leader. Like you, color guard became my life and I spent countless hours endlessly practicing with my team, and in the end, all our hard work paid off.

And you were there the entire time, cheering me on at my lowest of lows and screaming your lungs off when I excelled. Through color guard, we’ve gotten so much closer in our shared experiences. I will always be grateful that I had a role model like you to look up to during these four years, and my entire life.

Please know, even though I always make fun of you to my friends, secretly, I’m so proud of how much you’ve grown. Although you somehow chose to live in the farthest possible place away from me, I must admit that California and you fit like two peas in a pod. Hearing about your accomplishments and the friendships you’ve made along the way makes me so happy for you, and so excited to hear about your next adventures.

But above all else, I’m so thankful that we’ve managed to stay so close. In our weekly—almost daily—FaceTimes, I love sharing my latest news with you. It also comforts me to know that there is someone always looking out for me, who will see things from my perspective.

Please continue to look after me, guide me, and most importantly, stay as my best friend and the best sister in the whole wide world.

Celia and Dean Watson Dear Deano, Sorry I dragged you into writing these letters­— you and I both know we spend enough time in the car together to get these words out on their own.

But I prefer when we spend those minutes singing together, blasting some song you wouldn’t be caught dead belting anywhere else. And I’ll pretend to be annoyed when you change to a song you love, but I’ll go back and add it to my playlist when you get out. Of course I’ll yell at you when you steal Spotify, but secretly I revel in the fact that I still get that normalcy next year.

This year has gone by so fast, and I couldn’t be prouder to watch you become more and more yourself.

Not only do I truly consider you my best friend, but I watch you become who you want to be­—a strong young man who is kind and passionate, who is going to change the world. I have already planned my breaks when you can visit, because I truly know that whoever gets the privilege of calling you their friend is better for it.

I am proud to be your sister.

I won’t lie that next year doesn’t scare me. We’ve both seen the damage distance can inflict, and this’ll be the first move we haven’t done side by side. I’m scared, and I’m sad to leave. I remember that day in the back of Grandma Kay’s car, when you fell asleep on my shoulder. I’ll deny, but you’re bigger, stronger and faster than me now.

Even though you’re taller than me, I still see you as my little brother. You always will be, and even 11 hours away, I’ll be rooting for you as only a big sister can. Distance don’t have nothing on us.

As you proceed to dominate Carmel, I will always be proud of you. You make a difference, and you are a good person. I cannot wait to watch you excel, and we’ll have some fun trips to NYC. I miss you already, and I love you.

Dear Cel, Simply the irony that we both chose the same font for this letter says more than I could ever write.

But god, I’ll try. I would like you to know that your letter has already made me cry a few times, and I fear that this keyboard may become waterlogged.

I hope you know that when I’m able to drive­— hopefully soon­—I will be visiting more often than you would like. Maybe you can introduce the cool pole vaulters to me. I hope you know that while this may be hard, distance is such a weak thing for a bond to be broken by. Getting Spotify taken midcry session, sure, but distance? Oh, no.

People often ask me if I feel like I am living in my sister’s shadow. And I say no. I’m basking in it. Every time someone asks if I’m “Celia’s brother,” it makes me so immensely happy to say yes. I hope that throughout these meager few months we have living together, I pick up even more mannerisms from you. Even more cringey statements. And even more love.

You are the reason I am kind. Sometimes I ask myself, and others ask, “Why am I so kind?” and once again I respond, my sister. Why so kind? Why so determined? Why so loving?

These are all added onto the humongous list of mannerisms I have scrounged up from being around you.

You are the reason I have a notes page chock full of poems and random gibberish. And though your manifestation journals scare me a lot, it means more than you know when I see you did a page for me. It means more than you know when you impulsively ask me to go to Goodwill and buy a stuffed monkey. That monkey makes me think about you.

The fact that we can blend seamlessly through deep conversations and playing monkey videos while driving on the highway makes me happier than anyone in the world. And I hope you know I made this letter one word longer than yours.

“I went to two (pro-choice) abortion marches. The first one I went to, it wasn’t super crowded. There was definitely people there but the second one was the big one at the Statehouse...Everybody (met) at the Statehouse and there was a huge turnout. We started marching towards Monument Circle (and) we ended up all filling Monument Circle and it was just a really cool moment. It felt very empowering because it showed how much support we had.”

WHY DID YOU BEGIN ADVOCATING? “I try to be an advocate in whatever way I can because our world needs advocates. If we don’t speak up for the injustices our communities face, who will? I also started small and got more involved over time, so by joining a club or two, learning more and listening, you become empowered with the information, skills and confidence to speak up for others and it lights a fire to change our world that you can’t ignore. It is also so much fun helping causes and communities bigger than yourself.”

SEA OF BLUE The CHS student section does the wave to cheer at the Homecoming football game.

“My favorite sporting event memory would be the senior Homecoming football game this year. I had a ton of fun with my friends. It was fun dressing up in blue and gold. I also had a lot of fun putting on the tailgate with Cabinet before the game. It’s a great memory, putting on that event with some of my friends for a great cause. Overall, it was super nice to spend time with some of the people close to me and watching a great game for my last Homecoming.”

“My favorite CHS sports memory was the Homecoming game when they brought someone down from the sky. It was pretty crazy, and no one expected something like that to happen. Everyone was cheering together. It was an awesome feeling.”

“My favorite CHS sports memory is the senior night game when I was a freshman, when I played for the high school soccer team...The whole team came together and celebrated all the seniors that had shown leadership and guided us throughout our time on the team. It really showed the unity of the program. It was like a family.”

“My favorite sporting memory was the tennis meet at Culver. Afterwards, we all went down to the lake and jumped in as a team. It was a nice memory that we shared as a team. We also got some really nice food before the match. Culver has a bunch of good dessert shops, and this one coffee shop (had) a bunch of chocolates that I love.”

romantici23d WITH POPULAR MEDIA ROMANTICIZING GRADUATION, STUDENTS SHOULD ACKNOWLEDGE ANXIETY, DOUBT ABOUT FUTURE As an eager but anxious freshman, I had a picturesque idea of how I would feel as a senior in high school—self-assured, comfortable in my own skin and secure about what I wanted to achieve in life. As graduation looms closer, my current state could not deviate further from my “ideal” self. This is not to downplay my personal and academic growth since freshman year, but I feel a great deal of dread and panic upon the thought of graduating high school.

In the frenzy of college applications, extracurriculars and social life, I have not completely registered the reality that this chapter of my life is coming to a close. I’m anxious that I’m not ready to live out on my own, decide what career I want to pursue and the kind of life I want for myself. Although I feel them intensely, I can’t help but think these feelings of uneasiness are “wrong” to have. Movies I had idolized growing up have contributed this idealized carefree version of myself that I feel obligated to embody before graduation.

As a kid, I adored “A Cinderella Story,” starring Hilary Duff. The typical cookiecutter high school story of the “invisible girl” who gets the guy, the movie ends with Duff’s character graduating high school and attending her dream college, Princeton. At the end of the movie she has fully formed into a confident, capable young woman.

Her feelings of inadequacy about herself and what the future holds eroded as she got the guy and stood up to her vile stepmom.

To my 8-year-old self watching the movie in awe, the ending seemed to imply that after Duff’s character graduated, her life would be filled with ease and steadiness.

For years I waited in anticipation to feel that rooted in myself, that achieving the milestone of graduation would dispel all my insecurities and obstacles.

Unlike the smooth character arc from timid to assured in Duff’s character, my experience in high school felt anticlimactic.

Personally, I’ve felt like the setbacks I’ve had mental health-wise over the past four years made me feel drastically behind my peers in terms of accomplishments and grades. In desperation to “catch-up” and achieve that everlasting sense of confidence, I was quick to bottle my undesirable feelings of anxiety and doubt. This led me to constantly berate myself for not fitting the flawless mold I had envisioned. Looking back, I realized I wasn’t allowing myself to feel lost and confused, meaning I was stripping myself of the opportunity to be honest about what I wanted and find what makes me feel fulfilled.

If things didn’t go the way you expected these past four years, not only is that OK, but it is completely normal and more common than you think. Don’t let the media’s romanticized version of graduation make you feel inadequate for having doubts about your future. As we head into graduation and this next phase of our lives, make space for the uncertain.

in my heritage STUDENTS FIND VALUE IN HERITAGE, CULTURE AS THEY MATURE Senior Aqsa Karim, who has Bengali heritage, said her parents taught her about her culture when she was younger.

“I am Bengali. Growing up, I had strong input from my parents about my cultural heritage, and I just did not want to give that up,” she said.

As she got older, Karim said she began to research more about her heritage.

“Through connecting more with my culture (by myself ) instead of through my parents like I did when I was little...I have discovered a new sense of identity for myself,” she said.

According to UNESCO, heritage is a cultural legacy that has been, and will continue to be, passed down for generations. Everyone has a heritage, a family tree formed in the distant past long before they were ever born.

Business teacher Jacob Goodman, who has also extensively researched his heritage, said he was first inspired to take on the initiative after the death of a family member.

“About seven years ago, my last grandparent, Betty, passed away and then shortly after that, I was just reflecting on my family and my grandparents and realizing that I had a lot of vague knowledge about our family history,...but no real solid names and not really much concrete information.

So, I started researching my ancestry in the beginning on ancestry.com, like most people do,” he said.

Goodman said he was only able to gain so much information from the website before encountering roadblocks.

“Especially on my dad’s side, there were a lot of unknowns. There were many brick walls in my family tree,” he said. “So basically, I started actually going into public libraries and looking at old newspapers on microfilm. I started going to county clerk’s offices throughout Kentucky and getting old marriage certificates that weren’t digitized yet. As soon as that happened once or twice, I was pretty hooked and I’ve been going strong ever since.”

While heritage brings people closer to their roots, it can also have more complicated effects, especially when one’s heritage does not match with the predominant heritage found in an area.

Karim, who has experienced this firsthand, said her heritage has given her different sides to her identity.

“I’ve experienced two different parts of my personality,” she said. “At school, I’d be a different person than at home, where I’d be more like a brown person type, per se.”

However, Karim said her heritage has become an important part of her identity and is something she takes pride in.

“In my old school, there weren’t many brown kids...So, I thought (by assimilating), I would probably have a better time fitting in. But as I grew up, I realized that in

doing so, I’d be deleting a part of myself that I found very dear to me,” she said.

“I don’t want to forget who I was as a kid or where my parents came from. Because even though I grew up and was born in America, I still am Bengali. That’s a part of me that will never go away, no matter how much I try to become someone different.

So, in realizing that, I’ve found a new sense of peace within myself.”

Goodman encouraged more people to learn more about their heritage and said he believed people’s curiosity could be sated through learning about their heritage.

“I think that people are hungry to find meaning in their life because we live in such

a diverse country with a very interesting history full of ups and downs. And not everybody really even knows where they fit into this whole equation. And I think (researching your heritage) can give you some insight into that,” he said.

Karim, who said she already knows how she fits into the equation, said she hopes to always maintain her ties to her heritage.

“It’s just something that I really hope doesn’t die out,” she said. “In thinking of my future life, I don’t want to forget my culture. I don’t want to get assimilated into something else. I want to keep being myself with all parts of myself rather than only living as (one part of myself ).”
