INDY FRINGE SHOW SPONSOR: Jim Peterson WHEN AND WHERE: Rehearsals are usually two and one-half hours for four days a week starting at the end of July into the first week of August.

WHAT IT IS: This extra-curricular production rehearses over the summer to produce a short, one- hour play to be performed at the annual IndyFringe Festival in downtown Indianapolis. This theatre festival traditionally runs during the middle of Aug. for two weeks. The production is frequently used to compete in the Indiana Thespians Regional competition. If the play wins at the Regional Conference, the production is invited to compete at the Indiana State Thespian Conference.

Why did you agree to become the principal of CHS? Anytime that you look at everything that is Carmel High School from the outside, you think, ‘What a great school with students who come ready to learn every day, with teachers who are here to engage students, to all the extracurriculars.’ To have that opportunity to be part of it, I couldn’t turn that down.

How are you going to support the extracurriculars of CHS? Anytime you are a principal of any building, you need to be supportive of all parts of your school. Just to be there at a band concert and hear them play, to be at an Ambassador program and hear them sing, to see our kids on the stage, you’re kind of in awe. We know that our athletics program has many State Championships. Am I going to be supportive? Without a doubt. I’m excited about that aspect of Carmel High School.

How else are you going to connect to the student body?

The only reason I’m in education is because of students.

Students are always going to be the focus. The numberone aspect of any principal should be that. I really like kids, and I like being around kids.

What are your plans for the upcoming year?

I have an entire list of people that I want to talk to, the subjects that I want to talk to them about, just to get a better understanding of Carmel High school. This year is about engagement— engagement with the students, engagement with the faculty, engagement with the staff, the parents and letting them get to know me, and me to get to know them.

RECYCLING'S NEW LOOK CHS adjusts to new waste management method, complete with offsite recycling system MICHELLE YIN | STORY

has installed a trash compactor to manage its waste. This follows the Carmel Clay Schools (CCS) administration's 2015 decision to send its waste to a Ray's Trash sorting facility. According to CCS administrator Roger McMichael, CHS did not initially participate in this program.

“The trash at all other locations has been recycled since 2015, but not at CHS because of the volume, which necessitated the need for a second compactor,” McMichael said via email.

Kelly Davis, administrative representative for CCS Green Team and Woodbrook Elementary principal, said waste is sent to a separate facility.

“Carmel Clay Schools has a large recycling effort, but it looks different from the way you recycle at home.

Everything is recycled offsite by hand,

and people literally go through and separate recyclable from contaminated trash,” Davis said.

Waste is organized into several categories and sold to corporations that incorporate recycled materials into their products. Any waste Ray's Trash deems unsellable is sold to a steam-generating plant.

“This whole process results in no waste stream items going to a landfill,” McMichael said.

Davis said this method is more effective than having recycling bins throughout the school.

“In a corporation that is as large as ours, by using this process, items are more likely to be recycled because we don’t rely on thousands of people making the right decision to throw something in the trash or recycle bin,” Davis said.

agrees this process makes recycling simpler, despite the labor costs.

“In my personal experience, I have found that an overwhelming number of students have little regard for recycling options. By having the recyclables sorted remotely, all responsibility placed on students is removed.

Even the most responsible recyclers (myself included) can have trouble discerning whether or not an item belongs in the recycling container,” Ring said via email.

However, Davis said ultimately there needs to be more awareness about this policy. Ring said there are several ways the administration could inform students.

Ring said, “Removing existing blue recycling bins would also be extremely helpful in eliminating confusion. A brief notice on trash cans stating the recycling policy would H also be a helpful reminder.”

AN INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE IB World Conference offers key opportunity, reflects growing prominence of the IB program KALEA MIAO | STORY

THE

international baccalaureate (IB) is an educational foundation founded in 1968 but has only been offered at CHS for a little over a decade. In these past years, the program has grown in enrollment and, recently, offered a major opportunity to Alyssa Highberg and Carly Chia, IB students and seniors. The two were the only students from CHS to participate in the IB World Student Conference (IBWSC) in Rochester, N.Y. that started July 30 and ended Aug. 5.

“The IB World Student Conference is all about getting students around the world to relate with each other, which is a lot of what IB is about,” Highberg said. “We (discussed) a lot of world and global topics.”

berg, this conference explored the theme of ‘defining and defying boundaries.’ She said students from around the world who are involved in IB came together to discuss topics like digital privacy, human migration, the exclusive nature of political participation and how the viral spread of disease proves that boundaries defy easy definition.

Highberg said, “I (liked) seeing the different perspectives of other people on global issues and being able to discuss the future of the world.”

This aforementioned connection and opportunities like the IBWSC are part of the reason why the program is growing, IB English teacher Allyson Wells said. Wells said she has noted tremendous growth in the past three years and believes the autonomy stu-

dents get from IB is a large part of why the program is so appealing.

“IB gives the student a little more freedom to explore some of their own interests,” Wells said. “Many of the classes are very much fueled by student discussion, so students who really like to take control of what they’re learning seem to do really well in IB classes.”

Simrat Oberoi, IB student and senior, said she agrees with Wells.

Oberoi said that, along with the educational autonomy, the interconnection of subjects is one of the reasons why she joined the IB program.

“In classes we always try to connect what we're learning to our other subjects...For instance, as we're learning about World War II in IB History of the Americas, we're also reading The Assault, which takes place at the end of (World War II) by a Dutch author, in IB English,” Oberoi said.

At CHS, IB has quickly become a “competitor” to the AP program.

Both programs are rigorous, but according to Highberg, most of the similarities end there.

“With IB we try to have more discussion-based learning and a more broad knowledge,” Highberg said.

“Since IB is smaller than AP, we focus on the connection between kids and they’re in almost all our classes so it creates a nice family aspect between all.”

IB continues growing at CHS and globally, according to Wells, as students like Highberg and Oberoi encourage more others to look into the program.

“Everyone in the IB program is so passionate about what they do.

That's one of the really strong things about it,” Oberoi said. “I hope that as more people hear about it and identify with the learning method, we’ll H see more students sign up.”

While recent studies support later high school start times, what do CHS students, staff think?

recent years, more and more researchers have published studies supporting the stance that high schools should indeed start later.

The focal point of these studies is the idea that teenagers just aren’t getting enough sleep.

According to a recent National Sleep Foundation (NSF) study, 15 percent of teens reported sleeping eight and a half hours per school night, but the same study states the necessary hours of sleep teenagers need per night ranges from eight to 10.

For swimmer and junior Addi Milton, she said she is lucky to receive even six hours.

“My sleep schedule is not very regular because of swimming. On swimming days when we have to wake up super early, I have to wake up at (around) 4 a.m. and then I’m (at school) until 5:40 p.m.,” Milton said.

Furthermore, she said this lack of sleep has taken a definite toll on her school work.

“During the winter when the season is really hard and we have swim

meets that will go until 10 p.m. during the week and we have to get up in the morning to go to practice, we’ll stay up until 2 a.m. studying, and we’ll have to get up at 4 a.m., so it definitely affected my performance on tests and other school work,” Milton said.

Milton’s situation is not an isolated incident. Senior Min Hua Li said she experiences the same predicament despite getting, on average, eight hours of sleep a night because of extracurricular activities and a heavy course load.

“It feels like, no matter how much sleep I get, it’s not enough, especially in the morning. Since we’re in the school for over six hours, it takes a lot of your brain energy and then you have so much homework to do. And when you finally go to sleep, you’re really exhausted so you just collapse,” Li said.

“Then in the morning, you have to wake up really early. It’s really hard on my morning classes…It’s really hard to pay attention.”

Science teacher Erin Odya, however, said sleep deprivation

affects much more than just attention span; it affects the body and memory, notably the conversion of short-term to long-term memory.

Odya said, “You first have to start by looking at the purpose of sleep. A lot of people think sleep is nothingness, and it’s just your body being put on pause and resting, and that’s not even close. So much happens…If you’re thinking about a typical school day, the things that you learned the day before didn’t go into long term memory, and then you’re tired during class so you’re not absorbing all of the information that’s there even if you are trying to pay attention.”

According to Nationwide Children’s Hospital, sleep deprivation affects students’ moods, behaviors and academic performance.

Moreover, English teacher Cristen Cassler said the early start time doesn’t just affect students; it also affects teachers, particularly those with children.

“As a teacher, especially with having a family and children that I have to get ready for school, I think it would be helpful to start school a little bit later.

Especially at Carmel, we can’t drop our kids off until 7 (a.m.) and I have to be here by 7:30 (a.m.); it’s a really quick and tight morning that we have,” Cassler said.

Nevertheless, Cassler said she believes there are more drawbacks to starting school later than advantages.

She said, “I think that (starting school later) would be a huge thing to change with the logistics that go into it like busing and (coordinating) with the elementary schools…

Odya said she also agrees that shifting the start time would prove too difficult in the long run.

“It’s a trade off. It would make the mornings a lot better; who doesn’t want to sleep in? But then the after school becomes the big issue there…When you look at all the extracurriculars, they are all starting an hour later,” Odya said. “You start later so that (teenagers) can sleep longer, (but) say that we start an hour later, you guys lose an hour of homework time in the end.”

In addition, Milton said she believes it wouldn’t help her get more sleep anyway. “I feel like I would probably be just as tired because, even though we’re starting school later, I would end up going to bed later because I would be (at school) practicing later. I think

Moreover, according to Milton, as the school year goes on, she said she believes dealing with the early start time becomes much easier and almost routine.

“It’s definitely a lot harder at the beginning of the year and the beginning of the season in the fall to wake up early, but during the middle of the winter…it’s routine,” she said. “You know you’re going to get up early; you know you’re going to have to be here until 6 p.m. It’s my kind of normal.”

According to the NSF, the best ways to combat sleep deprivation are making sleep a priority and setting up a regular sleep schedule.

For Li, she said by making sleep a priority for her, she has seen a palpable boost in her cognitive capacity.

She said, “I’ve gotten used to it. (During), my sophomore year, (it) was really bad; I usually went to bed at around 11 p.m. But (last year), since I started to notice that I was dozing off or missing lectures in class, I started going to bed earlier, and I tried to be in bed before 10 p.m. I think it really helped because now I pay more attention in class.”

According to Odya, in addition to having a regular sleep schedule, one must also evaluate the quality of sleep in relation to quantity.

Odya said, “Quality is more important than quantity for sure.

Quantity differs for different people…Some people can get through (sleep cycles) very quickly, so you’ll see people who are totally fine on four or five hours of sleep a night.

Most people need a least six (hours) to get through all their cycles. “(And) you can’t make up sleep.

Say you stay up studying all night, you cannot then sleep all the next day or two days later and catch up on sleep; that’s not possible. A regular sleep schedule is more important than total hours.”

Ultimately, Li said it’s all up to each individual student and how much they value sleep in comparison to school work.

“It’s their choice if they want to stay up and get homework done,” Li said. “But my personal philosophy is that even if I don’t get all of my studying done, I’ll still turn in for the night because I know that in the long run, it’s going to be more H beneficial to me.”

a bright and sunny day, senior Alexa Dow works at Juice Bar, a local smoothie and juice hub. As customers file in to enjoy a freshly-made green smoothie, Dow takes and makes numerous orders for them. The help she gets is from not only her fellow co-workers but also from blenders, juicers and iPad cashiers. Technology has increasingly been a part of not only her working environment, but in the working environment of the world.

Society is technologically advancing, and with it comes artificial intelligence. By definition, artificial intelligence is the theory and development of computer systems able to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence. This includes visual perception, speech recognition, decisionmaking and translation between languages. Artificial intelligence can be found in most mobile devices through social media, as well as in applications, communication systems and Internet databases. Technology is already immensely present in today’s society and continues to become a greater part of civilian daily life.

However, artificial intelligence may become more harmful for society and the economy. According to a recent study by Pew Research Center, one robot per 1,000 workers reduces the employment to population ratio by JUICY JOBS: Senior Alexa Dow arrives at Juice Bar, the smoothie and juice bar where she works. Dow said she sees the effects of technology at her job each day when she uses iPads to help customers check out. Dow also said technology is often a helpful aspect of her job.

John Coghlan, industrial technology department chairperson, said currently, from a supplier standpoint, he has not noticed a dramatic increase of technological advancements. With his experience as a construction teacher, he said what technology does is bring down the costs of the goods that would have been manufactured by humans.

These numbers may be increasingly alarming for employees, for industries are rapidly growing and in need for more machines and technology. This in turn takes jobs away and leaves more Americans unemployed, causing the composition of the human workforce to become increasingly competitive with its digital counterpart.

Another student who sees the increase in technology at work is junior Quinn Dooley, who works as a bagger and cart attendant at Kroger. However, according to Dooley, this upsurge can cause menial jobs to be on the line. She said Kroger’s competitor, Target, installed collecting machines that push in carts, reducing the job of a typical cart attendant. Furthermore, more stores are installing stations for

seen a lot of advances in technology, tools (or) materials,” Coghlan said, “but… we don’t have robots installing drywall in houses yet.”

However, Coghlan also said he believes society will begin to see an increase in automation in the nearby future, especially in factory and manufacturing jobs. Despite the upward trend in technology, he said he believes people will always be willing to pay for handcrafted goods rather than machine-made ones.

“I can program a machine to carve an item that a person can also carve,” Coghlan said, “but some people are always going to be willing to pay for that hand-done item.”

Coghlan said currently, employment for construction is at a low because homebuilding is cyclical, or recurrent, so the employment rate depends on the current state of the economy. Therefore, not all labor-intensive jobs could be impacted by an increase in technological usage.

According to a 2016 study by the Pew Research Center, 87 percent of workers believed it will be essential for them to get training and develop new job skills throughout their work life in order to keep up with changes in the workplace. This is consistent with reality for the number of work-

Dow said she wants to be a writer for Penguin Random House Publishing. As reported by Verge, artificial intelligence is beginning to take over journalism writing; a Wordsmith platform by Automated Insights is writing financial stories for the Associated Press, publishing over 3,000 stories every quarter. Even though work that could be given to humans is now being done by robots, Dow said she doesn’t believe it will have an impact on her future job.

Dow said, “Stories come from people’s imagination and creativity and no matter how hard someone tries, a machine cannot think of its own ideas. Sure, someone could use the machine to write down their idea for them, but that’s basically the same thing people do now when they type a manuscript, just with a little less work. A machine that doesn’t have a brain or any imagination can’t do that. It’s just a machine and its wired to do what people design it for, so I think a lot of the credit still goes to H the human individual.”

year, according to director of choirs Kathrine Kouns, the choir department has two new directors this year, Kyle Barker and Sam Chenoweth. Barker, who previously taught at Northridge High School in Middlebury, Ind., will teach Ambassadors as well as some other choirs while Chenoweth, former choir teacher at Fairfield Jr.-Sr. High School in Goshen, Ind., will be in charge of New Edition, Encores and the Applied Music classes.

Kouns said she is excited to welcome Barker and Chenoweth to the choir department.

“One great thing that both of these new teachers have going for them is the fact that they want to be here; they want to be in Carmel, they want to be with our students and they want to give everything that they’ve got to this program,” Kouns said.

Ambassador and junior Sierra Talbert said it was difficult for some choir students to say goodbye to the former directors, John Burlace and Christina Mauck.

“I know that all of us (had a strong connection to the directors), especially the students that had them in their classes, and I know

all of the Ambassadors had a very strong connection to (Burlace), but we’re all making sure that we go into it with an open mind so that the year is good,” Talbert said.

Though two new directors out of three total is a big change, CHS has gone through even bigger staff changes in the past. According to Ambassador and senior Reese Nordeen, all three choir directors were new to CHS during his freshman year.

Nordeen said some of his classmates had trouble adjusting to this change.

“The upperclassmen when I was a freshman had a lot of issues adjusting to the new directors. I think a lot of this had to do with the fact that it was three new directors and that they were unwilling to go with the changes that the new directors were trying to put in place,” Nordeen said.

However, Nordeen said having one returning director will hopefully prevent a similarly rocky transition this year.

“I feel like having that one returning director brings a lot of familiarity to a lot of the people, and hopefully most of the upperclassmen and the underclassmen will approach this year with enthusiasm. I believe this is all about

Q&A WITH SAM CHENOWETH How and what was your past experience as a teacher?

I’m coming from an Assistant Director position with a large show choir program in Ohio. I’ve done a lot of work in both choir and musical theater though, including work with the Ball State University singers and several theater organizations and schools around the Midwest.

What are some goals you want to focus on as a CHS choir director?

CHS has an amazing choral music tradition that I knew I wanted to be a part of the moment the position became available.

My biggest goal in this position at CHS is to continue the tradition of excellence. There’s so much to be proud of already, so it’s our job to maintain those things, but also figure out how we can continue to grow and improve.

What’s the most important thing students should know about you?

I’d say the most important thing students should know about me is that I’m really excited to get to work with them throughout all of the choral and musical opportunities at CHS. Whether it’s through show choir or the musical, I’m very excited about what CHS has to offer, but also what I can offer the program and our students.

There’s a lot to look forward to.

mindset; going in with the idea that this can still be great and that it’s not a bad change really means a lot to the success of the program.”

Kouns said she agrees and said she doesn’t think the choir program will experience big changes.

“The students are the ones who create all of this; it’s the students who are onstage singing and dancing and doing a great job, and that’s not changing. They are talented and they know exactly what they need to do to have a successful season and to come together as a group,” Kouns said.

In addition to changes in staff this year, students involved in choir at CHS go through the process of finding out their choir placement annually.

According to Nordeen, choir placements sometimes cause drama between students.

“A lot of the time people don’t become as much upset with the fact that they didn’t make a higher choir, they usually get more upset about

the people who did make the choir; maybe they feel like they’re better than them or that that person isn’t well prepared for that choir,” Nordeen said. “It plays a lot into ego and what people think of themselves.”

Kouns said this process is not only difficult for students, but for teachers as well.

“It’s a tough aspect of the job, but it’s a necessary part to help the students grow and develop at the rate that they need to,” Kouns said. “I have two small children, and of course I want my children to be happy, but sometimes as their mom, I have to make a decision that doesn’t make them happy because it’s for their well-being. ‘No, you’re not going to have ice cream for dinner, you’re going to have your vegetables and stuff first because it’s healthy and you need to take care of your body.’ It’s the same thing for this; sometimes I have to make decisions that don’t necessarily make the individual student happy, but

they are in the best interest of their musical growth.”

Despite possible drama, Talbert said drama dies down over the summer and even after spring break, when Kouns and the other directors conference with students.

“I do think that the drama is pretty much dispelled before the summer and pretty much before the end of the year; I think people have come to terms with it. Mrs. Kouns and some of the other directors even opened conferences with the students so they could explain why they chose their placement for them,” Talbert said.

Overall, Kouns said she is optimistic the choir program will have a great year despite various changes.

Kouns said, “The good news is that there really are a lot of other components of (the choir students’) success that are not changing. I firmly believe that they will absolutely be able to maintain their H same level of success.”

New Coach, same goals

his seventh consecutive State Championship, as well as a fourth-place finish in the 2016 Nike Cross Nationals, Mark Ellington of the women’s crosscountry team will not return this upcoming season as head coach, citing family reasons to retire after eight years.

“Being a high school head coach could very well be a full-time job,” Ellington said. “There is so much to be done and only small amounts of time during the day in which to complete them. I tend to have a personality of taking it all on, and learning to delegate and develop a coaching staff to divide the labor was a necessary skill to develop.”

In his time at CHS, Ellington led the team to its longest State Cham-

pionship streak in team history, shattering its previous record of five from 1984 to 1988. With word of his departure, the search for a new leader for the program began in the offseason.

“When Coach Ellington announced his intention to resign in the fall, he told our athletics director, Jim Inskeep, who posted the position with the hope of getting as many Carmel High School and other local prospects,” assistant coach Katie Kelly said.

Andy Dalton had previously served as assistant coach and was directly chosen by the school community in early 2017. He was one of dozens of applicants for the position and had been with the program for three years.

Likewise, Ellington said he is positive about the upcoming season and said success under Dalton will be upheld by the runners who make up the program and the community that supports it.

“We are fortunate to live in a community that is supportive of running,” Ellington said. “Our students have an opportunity to compete in running in elementary school through Pup Running program. Athletes have been great in sharing and passing along their own experiences to younger, newer athletes.

In upcoming years, the coaching staff will explore new ways to preserve the energy once brought by Coach Ellington while not altering fundamental aspects of team chemistry.

“Our plan here is not to reinvent the wheel,” Kelly said. “We have plenty of good things going for us here and even without coach Ellington and with a few minor tweaks, I H know we can succeed.”

Straight outta eighth grade Playing sports eases high school transitions for incoming freshmen HANNAH GLAZIER | STORY

For

most incoming freshmen, the first day of school marked the daunting transition from middle school to high school. With it comes the introduction of a new building, new friends and new teammates. Looking around, many see familiar faces from their middle school or sports team.

However, for sophomore Lily McAndrews this was not the case.

Unlike many of her classmates, her transition was much different. She transferred from a class size of eight

students to a school of more than 5,000. For McAndrews, her first day at CHS marked her first day at a public school.

McAndrews attended school at Highlands Latin School, in which students attend three- or four-day school weeks and were then assigned secondary assignments to work on at home. Compared to CHS, class sizes were significantly smaller. McAndrews had an average size class of only eight students in her entire grade.

about going to such a big school, but at the same time I have been playing soccer since about third grade,” McAndrews said. “I would play with a lot of kids on my team who would be in my grade, so I knew some faces going into school.”

McAndrews is not the only CHS student who has experienced the impact of athletics on the middle school to high school transition. For freshman Anjali Natarajan, participating on the women’s tennis team this spring has made her feel less in-

timidated by the transition from her middle school to CHS. “I have gone to Sycamore School my entire life, so the transition was definitely going to be scary for me. It was nice to have my brother go through it before me,” Natarajan said.

Natarajan attended Sycamore School for middle school. Her entire school had around 400 kids and her grade had 35 students, which is the same number of students in some CHS classes.

According to U.S. News, teens who play on sports teams tend to excel socially and academically because engagement in extracurricular activities helps alleviate anxiety over other aspects of the transition.

Similarly, McAndrews said that the athletic opportunities offered at CHS, specifically the emphasis of a strong team dynamic, was instrumental to her experience as an incoming freshman.

Assistant Athletics Director Bruce Wolf said he believes engaging in any CHS sports team enhances students overall experience at CHS. “I think there’s no doubt that connecting with something fairly early as a freshman makes not only their transition better, but actually their overall experience of freshman year because they’ll be involved in something not all kids are in,” Wolf said.

For McAndrews, running on the varsity cross-country and track teams helped her make friends at CHS before the school year even began, making the transition significantly less daunting.

“Cross-country has summer practices, so I went there and got to meet a lot of people. Then when I came in on the first day it’s not like I didn’t know anyone because I did have a lot of friendships, so that definitely helped starting out in my transition. I was not as worried anymore,” McAndrews said.

According to Wolf, particularly

fall sports present an advantage to students making the transition to CHS because they become involved and connect to CHS early on in the school year.

However, women’s tennis is a spring sport, so for Natarajan the season and team building will not begin until after the school year begins.

Still, training at the Carmel Racquet Club helped Natarajan recognize some familiar faces.

According to Natarajan and McAndrews, participating in CHS athletics strengthened their overall school spirit due to CHS’s emphasis on the importance of a strong team dynamic “Being on a team made me more proud to go and represent Carmel in general. I felt like I always had to represent my school, which I did not feel until this year. So, being on a team helped me feel proud of my school,” McAndrews said.

For Natarajan, a main reason she decided to attend CHS was for its athletic department. During her eighth grade year, she debated between attending Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School or CHS. After watching her older brother play tennis for four years and win a State Championship, Natarajan said she knew she wanted to participate on a CHS team.

“I wanted to go to a high school that would give me a really good chance at winning State and Carmel is so good at tennis. Sport and academics were my two big reasons,” Natarajan said.

“If you do not involve an involvement niche or connect with kids, it’s possible you’ll just be a student like anybody else--and get a great education-- but you’ll miss out on a lot of great opportunities. Any freshman, whether they’re coming from Clay, Creekside, Caramel or a private school, if they can develop a niche and connect with CHS students, will get them involved and likely better H transition,” Wolf said.

Americans should be respectful of those who speak languages other than English.

months now, my facebook and twitter timelines have filled with horrifying videos of immigrants being berated by Americans for speaking their own languages. In grocery stores. In parks. In restaurants.

This phenomenon has spread almost everywhere.

“Speak English, you’re in America,” they say.

“Go back to where you came from,” they yell.

It appalls me to watch this happen to my own country.

A country that I’ve loved and called my home for 17 years.

We pride ourselves as the land of the free and the home of the brave, and yet still we can’t handle if someone speaks in a language we can’t understand. It’s hypocritical.

The social and political atmosphere we’ve created is built on one aspect: fear. We’ve become so fearful of the people around us it has started affecting our basic social manners. We’re scared of hearing something we don’t understand. In essence, we’re scared everyone is a terrorist. We all know it’s wrong. Our own ignorance scares us.

While I’ve never experienced anything like this before, I feel particularly connected to this issue as I speak two languages. I’ve always been proud of speaking two languages and considered it a talent even since I was little. For the past cou-

ple of months, I’ve started to question that. I’ve become more aware of what language I’m speaking outside of the house. But bilingualism should be something we are proud of, not something we fear. Knowing a different language is a testament to someone’s intelligence and mental capacity, not something to be discriminated about. Language is a connection to one’s homeland; stop taking that away from people.

“America is a melting pot,” we proudly say. It’s time we start living up to our own saying. To me, a melting pot doesn’t just mean there is diversity, but the diversity is also welcomed. Whether we believe it or not, this is not just happening right now. It’s okay to not understand. It’s okay to be confused. I assure you the woman in the grocery store speaking in Arabic is only asking her son to grab something for her, not planning a terrorist attack.

I encourage you all to be empathetic, kind and patient. Our country cannot grow if the people don’t start becoming accepting. Stop criminalizing languages. Stop criminalizing the people around you. The Patriots’ decision not to trade Jimmy Garoppolo could have both positive, negative ramifications.

the 2017 NFL draft, the Patriots lost their first and second picks. Therefore, some speculated trading quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to recover this loss.

However, from my perspective as a lifelong Patriots fan, the Garoppolo trade would have been a major mistake, and keeping him was the best decision for the Patriots to make this season.

First, consider Garoppolo’s sheer talent. Though it seems like quarterback Tom Brady’s dynasty will never end, he has officially entered his 40s and will eventually need an heir. This was foreshadowed with Brady’s “Deflategate” suspension and Garoppolo’s performance starting against both the Cardinals and Dolphins last season. Garoppolo’s already proven his skills as a starter, only strengthening the Patriots’ roster.

But Garoppolo brings more than just talent to the table. The Patriots quarterbacks— Brady, Garoppolo and Jacoby Brissett—are affectionately dubbed the “Wolf Pack” by Brady and fans alike. The Wolf Pack represents the loyalty of Pats Nation and is one of the most iconic relationships in the team. In my opinion, breaking this brotherhood would symbolically break the loyalty between fans and the team, and sports teams are nothing without strong fanbases. Though the Foxboro Faithful would still live up to their name, I know the season wouldn’t feel right without all three quarterbacks there.

Overall, trading Garoppolo wouldn’t have benefitted him or the Patriots. In my opinion, Garoppolo could very much be the second coming of Brady, and the Patriots can’t let that go. Even though moving to another team could’ve given Garoppolo a chance to step out from under Brady’s shadow, it also would’ve meant a lose-lose situation where an amazing quarterback leaves the current best team in the league. So, considering the talent and hype Garoppolo brings to the team and the fans, I look forward to this upcoming season and believe we’ll only see more success from Garoppolo and the Patriots as a whole. H

England Patriot Jimmy Garoppolo earned his first true NFL start at the beginning of this season, following Tom Brady’s four-game Deflategate suspension. Although Garoppolo did have an impressive performance in the first couple of games, he injured his throwing shoulder and never returned to the starting role.

According to ESPN, Garoppolo threw for 496 yards, four touchdowns and zero interceptions in the six quarters he played in. Additionally, he showed the ability to read defenses and make good decisions while on the field.

Teams like the Cleveland Browns and Houston Texans have expressed interest in acquiring him, but the willingness of the Patriots’ organization to listen to such offers has drawn criticism from fans of the team. In my opinion, the Patriots’ organization must do what’s best for the team rather than appeasing fans.

Following the interest in Garoppolo and the lack of developed talent in this year’s draft, the Patriots are poised to demand a king’s ransom for Garoppolo. The team, although coming off of a Super Bowl victory, still has weaknesses that must be addressed if it wants to make yet another title run.

With Brady still healthy, the quarterback position is not an area of concern for the team. Additions like cornerback Stephon Gilmore and running back Rex Burkhead would alleviate the Patriots’ issues, but trading Garoppolo for a high-end player in either position would provide the team with more support around Brady.

Although fans see Garoppolo as their next franchise quarterback--and they may still be correct--it is important for the Patriots’ organization to maximize Brady’s prime years and build on their weaknesses if they want to make another Super Bowl run. While I can’t say I look forward to success from the Patriots, I hope the organization makes the correct decision to support their starting quarterback in his prime years and improve on weaknessH es rather than hold back players for the fans.

Pretty big problems

Media should be wary of glamorizing large age gaps in relationships.

THE

famous freeform television series “Pretty Little Liars” finally draws to a close after airing for seven years.

One of the anchoring couples on the show is Ezra Fitz and Aria Montgomery, whose relationship was widely-loved and supported by many. With Ezra proposing to Aria in the final season, it shows a happy ending for the couple at last. However, fans and screenwriters are ignoring a huge fact: their relationship started as an illegal encounter between the two. Ezra was 23 and Aria was only 16 when they made out in a club after neither was honest about their age. Though not without bumps, the relationship continued throughout the course of the show.

This inappropriate pattern of an older man having a relationship with an underage girl has been used to add drama and attention to shows—though the gender

roles can also flip, seen in “Riverdale” between Archie when he was a high school sophomore and his music teacher, Miss Grundy. However, few have been used as extensively and without consequence as in “Pretty Little Liars.” Even Aria’s parents, who opposed the relationship, eventually gave in.

Why are viewers okay with ignoring the fact these shows are glamorizing the illegal relationship between an adult and a minor as romantic? There’s a reason why laws are in place. A teacher or older adult is supposed to be someone mature who a younger person can turn to for guidance. When that line is crossed, it’s not like the TV shows—in reality, it’s manipulative, inappropriate and has consequences. Making these relationships seem desirable and attractively scandalous puts the wrong image into young viewers’ heads and shouldn’t be romanticized in the H entertainment industry.

NET NEUTRALITY

On the issue of net neutrality, both sides should work together to create a stronger solution.

ON

May 18, the Federal Communications Commision (FCC) voted to scale back net neutrality protections. Net neutrality, which is the concept that internet service providers should treat all data on the internet equally regardless of the source, has been a pressing issue for a while, and hence it is important to consider the implications of the FCC’s decision.

At first glance, net neutrality sounds desirable. It prevents internet service providers from blocking websites, throttling data and discriminating against certain websites. Removing such regulations, proponents argue, carry negative implications for the consumer and small websites who may suffer from partnerships between internet service providers and large corporations. Proponents of net neutrality do not wish for situations like this to occur, and act to protect the freedom of the internet.

ALLEN ZHANG | COLUMN However, the FCC believes net neutrality is stifling investment in broadband internet. In studies from PPI and USTelecom, researchers found that domestic investment in broadband had declined accompanying the implementation of net neutrality policies. By reducing net neutrality regulations, the FCC hopes to promote investment that it believes will lead to technological expansion and the accelerated spread of broadband internet.

Ultimately, the purpose of this column is to help the reader realize that neither side is wrong or right. The truth is, both sides just need to take a step back and work together to find a solution that works for the both of them--not just on this issue, but in politics H in general.

Q&A WITH BEN GOLDBERG: STUDENT BODY PRESIDENT Why did you decide to run for Student Body President?

Ever since I came to the Senate as a freshman, I knew that I always wanted to run for student body president, I put my head to the grind and put all the work in and I felt like it was the right time.

How do you want to be remembered at CHS? I just want to be remembered as an approachable guy; I want to lead by example and make everyone feel accepted, that’s really what I want to do.

What do you hope to accomplish in your role?

Within the Senate itself, I hope to (become) more organized than we were in the past few years, as well as I want to get more events planned out, I want to get all of our other events better run within the Senate itself (and) make sure everyone knows what they’re doing.

Q&A WITH SAM JOHNSON: SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE How do you want to be remembered at CHS? I hope to be remembered as just someone who was a friend to everyone, able to get people excited about things wanting to come and be like, ‘Hey, I want to be like him and get involved and do something more,’ and help people realize their dreams and potential at CHS. What do you hope to accomplish as speaker of the House?

What I really hope to be able to do is to continue to provide the same events that we have and add stuff to them, perhaps if we can even reach more groups by better promotion. It works both ways; we get more people coming to our events, having fun (and) getting involved in school.

Why did you decide to run for Speaker of the House?

The past three years I spent in student government, and the past two in Cabinet, I really fell in love with the whole thing, and it made me who I (am) today. I wanted to do the most I could possibly do to give back, help the kids at Riley and make a good experience for everyone at CHS and whoever decides to come to the events.

What do you think the best part of CHS is?

I think the best part of CHS is just the variety of options, whether you want to go and do student government, a million options for that, if you want to do sports, you (have) a million options, if you want to do tech you can do TechHOUNDS. If you’re into journalism you can do any of the Greyhound Media Network. I think that’s the best part of CHS, if you want to belong, you can.

What is something you want to somebody to know about you?

Coming into CHS I was super into sports, I didn’t do a whole lot of other things. I had some bad injuries (and I ) couldn’t do (sports) anymore. For a while I was kind of almost lost and I really wasn’t doing much. I found student government; I found something I loved. I think that anyone else who wants to get involved, or isn’t already involved, can look at me or talk to me about what I did to find something I loved.

Is there someone you look up to that pushed you to take up the role of speaker of the House?

I would have to say my brother and a lot of his friends. He graduated five years ago. He and all his friends were in Cabinet, they lived to the fullest they did everything they could. They were just great happy guys.

What do you think the worst part of CHS is?

The worst part of CHS is some people feel like they can’t do certain things-they are already in one specialized group, Say if I was like in a specialized group of student government, I would feel like, ‘Oh I can’t go to choir now because I’m already in this.’
