The Learner Support team can offer a wide range of support measures and has specific resources available to assist learners with: Specific learning difficulties e.g dyslexia Physical disability/mobility difficulties Sensory impairment Medical/health difficulties

Online Learning Moodle provides an online learning environment, that enables you to: Access your class materials from the Internet - anytime, anywhere; Interact with your tutors and fellow classmates using online communication tools; Access a range of resources to help you engage more with how you learn.

Moodle can be accessed by using the following URL: https://learning.glasgowkelvin.ac.uk To log in to Moodle, you use your own college username and password College and Moodle accounts are synchronized, there is no need for different logins


All GKC students will be provided with a computer username and password 1-2 days after completing enrolment. It will be based on a combination of your name and a three digit code (i.e. joebloggs151). You can get this through Library Services, Flexible Learning areas or via your tutor. As well as access to the Internet, online resources and a wealth of software installed on GKC computers, this account enables students to access a range of ICT services. These include:

Microsoft Office 365 services. @glasgowkelvin.ac.uk e-mail account with a 50GB mailbox 1TB of Cloud storage with Microsoft OneDrive Online versions of Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint Instant messaging, voice and video communication through Microsoft Skype for Business Yammer: Facebook for College!

Students are automatically registered with the Microsoft Office Pro Plus Program. This enables students to download full copies of Microsoft Office Applications onto up to 5 devices – laptop, tablet, iPad etc.

Students can connect personal devices such as laptops, tablets, iPhone, smart phone to the College WiFi network to enable Internet access across all College Campuses.

Information on the full range of GKC ICT Services can be obtained from Library Staff, Flexible Learning Unit, Staff or course tutors. Information will also be provided on the College website and the intranet site.

Glasgow Kelvin College Student Association is an democratic autonomous body that’s here to represent your views within the college community and ensure that all students regardless of gender, sexual orientation, disability, religious beliefs, age or colour are fairly treated and represented. Our goal is to ensure that students have the best possible experience of their time here. We also help shape and influence the learning and teaching within your course as well as providing a social element to your time at GKC. The Association is there to be your voice and represent all students in a variety of ways: Working to improve learning and teaching so that students receive a high quality learning experience Creating opportunities to further develop and gain new skills Being the hub for clubs and societies that showcase and provide support for all our students Offering advice and support so you always have someone to turn to when times are tough Campaigning on a number of issues to help enhance the student experience.

The Association represents your views on a variety of committees within the college and regionally and will empower you to help shape and influence the learning and teaching within your course through your class reps and in partnership with the college.

The Student Association President is a full time sabbatical officer, heading up our Student Association Executive Team, and is elected democratically by the student body to represent all students in all matters relating to the college experience within the classroom and wider working life of the college. This year’s President is David Walker who is based mainly in the Springburn campus. Vice Presidents for each campus and the exec committee will be voted in upcoming elections. FE Learners

If you are studying on a full time, non-advanced programme then you may be entitled to apply for the following student support; Fees (you must meet residency requirements) Bursary (may include maintenance, travel, study & additional support needs allowances) Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) (normally for 16 & 17 year old learners) Childcare Fund (for formal, registered childcare costs) FE Discretionary Fund (for help with emergency financial situations)

If you are studying on a part time, non-advanced programme then you may be entitled to apply for help with your travel & study costs. It is vital that you attend all your classes as your payments will be affected if you do not.

FUNDING

The Student Funding Teams administer applications for Bursary, Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA), Childcare and Discretionary Funds. We give advice on what funding learners’ may be entitled to and what evidence is required to support funding applications. We monitor learners’ attendance and ensure timeous and accurate payments accordingly.


Learners who are attending on a full-time basis on Higher Education programmes should apply to The Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS) for their support. Applications must be made online at www.saas.gov.uk and awards may include the following: Fees (you must meet residency requirements) Student Loan Young Student Bursary or Independent Student Bursary Supplementary Grants (eg. Lone Parent Grant, Disabled Student Allowance)

Please note that you must bring your SLC Student Loan letter to college to be scanned before your payments will start. It should be taken to the Admin Department on the 4th floor of the Springburn campus or, if you attend any other campus, the award letter should be taken to the Advice Office or reception to be copied or scanned. TIn addition to SAAS funding HE learners can apply directly to the college for the following support (provided you have applied for the maximum student loan): Childcare Fund (for formal, registered childcare costs – full time learners only) HE Discretionary Fund (for help with emergency financial situations)

If you are studying on a part-time Higher Education course then a part time fee grant may be available from SAAS. Further information is available at www.saas.gov.uk.

FINANCE We understand that these processes can be confusing and you may require assistance. Students are responsible for their fees irrespective of whether these are being paid by someone else on their behalf. It is important that you have established whether you are liable to pay fees and how these are to be paid

Finance staff will be available to help you throughout the process to ensure that your fee status and method of payment are clear in order that you can concentrate on your studies immediately

ADVICE & GUIDANCE Advice and guidance is available to all learners and includes - Guidance, Careers Advice and Admissions. The Team offers a wide range of information including: details of college programmes, applications and pre entry guidance

KEEPING SAFE When on college premises you must:

Report faulty fittings or equipment (damaged flooring, doors, windows or tools)

Not interfere with anything provided to safeguard your health and safety (Fire Extinguishers, Fire Doors, First aid boxes etc.)

Co-operate with the College on health and safety matters (abide by Fire Evacuation guidance)

Take reasonable care for the health and safety of yourself and other persons who may be affected by your actions

Report concerns, incidents or unsafe working practices to a member of College staff

Routine Fire Alarm Tests... The building Fire Alarms at each campus are tested every week on Wednesday at 10am.

If You Discover A Fire

If you hear the Fire Alarm

Shout “Fire, Fire, Fire”.

Leave the building by the nearest fire exit

If during this routine test the alarm sounds for longer than 45 seconds – evacuate the building

Evacuate the building via the nearest exit by walking briskly (do not run)

There will be a full evacuation of each campus building at least twice per academic year to ensure all staff and learners are aware of the correct evacuation routine

Operate the nearest fire alarm point.

Close doors along route to Fire Assembly point to isolate the fire and prevent passage of smoke. Report location of fire to Fire Warden.

Proceed to designated Assembly Areas Do not: Stop or return for belongings etc. Use the lift(s) Enter the building until authorised. This will be indicated by the sounding of an air horn
