COUNCIL TAX Who can apply? How to apply?


MANY FULL TIME STUDENTS ARE ELIGIBLE TO CLAIM A COUNCIL TAX EXEMPTION OR DISCOUNT WHILE STUDYING.

FOR MANY OF YOU THIS WILL BE THE FIRST TIME THAT YOU WILL HAVE HAD TO CONSIDER COUNCIL TAX. THIS GUIDE WILL HELP YOU COVER THE BASICS. IF YOU ARE IN ANY WAY UNSURE SPEAK TO ONE OF THE ADVICE AND GUIDANCE TEAM FOR FURTHER INFORMATION. Full-time students If you are a full-time student, you are eligible to claim a council tax exemption or discount.

What is a full-time student? For council tax purposes a full-time student is someone who is undertaking a full-time course as defined by the college. This is usually 21 hours per week (including class time and self-study) OR In addition, students under 20 can also apply as long as they are studying courses no higher than: Higher or A-Level Ordinary National Certificate Ordinary National Diploma

What about part-time students? If you are a part-time student, you will not be eligible for a Council Tax exemption or discount. You may be entitled to Council Tax Reduction which is based on your income.


Exemptions and discounts, am I eligible?  

An exemption from council tax may be awarded if you are a full time-time student who lives alone or if you live with other full-time students. A discount from council tax may be awarded if you live with someone who is not a student. The discount award is based on the full household circumstances and the full-time student will not be held liable for Council Tax

What if I live in a different Council outside Glasgow? Not all Council areas offer the same discounts. If you are resident at any other council area, please contact your local council office for details of discounts and a form. You can then hand this form in to any College Reception for completion.
