Welcome Back!

A belated welcome back for those who enjoyed a break during the Spring holiday period. The summer term has come around really quickly or so it seems to me.

I apologise for the lack of a blog recently but due to an accident using a PC has been impossible until now.

However hopefully that is now behind me.

Alan, Robin and I spent time last week speaking to faculty management teams about the findings in the Education Scotland report in order to inform the action plan. These meetings were very helpful and the key points were reported to the Academic Board which also discussed the report at some length. The Learning & Teaching Committee will consider the first draft of the action plan at its meeting on 6 May and following that there will be further consultation on the draft action plan, including with Trade Union representatives, prior to the June Board meeting.

The first meeting of the relocation group took place prior to the break and further meetings will be scheduled for the next week or so. Other teams have now brought forward their proposals for the relocation of provision and these will be considered both by the group and the SMT. Thanks to a lot of hard work by the Advice & Guidance team good progress is being made in the recruitment of learners for next session. The running total will be updated monthly and displayed in each reception area. Chris can also provide more detailed breakdowns for particular areas if required.

As we approach the end of the financial year the College is carefully monitoring all expenditure to ensure that we come in on budget. All managers are reviewing their budgets as part of this exercise and your support is appreciated.

The Board is now in the process of seeking to recruit new members following recent resignations for personal/work reasons. As you will be aware new members require to be approved by the Regional Board so the process may take slightly longer than previously was the case. Also the nominations process for staff Board members has commenced.

Andrew Aitken has overwhelming been re-elected as Student President for session 2015/16 following a ballot of learners. Eire Hawthorne was returned unopposed as Vice President.

Electric Honey have signed Finn La Marinel as their artist this year. Watch the video on page 18 to see his performance on STV Glasgow He is playing a gig at the CCA on 29 April and if you have time it should be a good night.

Learners ‘Make a Change’!

Rosemount Lifelong Learning project in Royston Road celebrated the success of eleven of their learners recently on the ‘Time for a Change’ (TFAC) programme.

In partnership with Glasgow Kelvin College, they’ve supported the seventh group of TFAC learners to achieve a range of qualifications, such as REHIS, HeartStart, First Aid, Health & Safety as well as IT and confidence building skills. The programme works closely with and is funded by other partners including Jobs & Business Glasgow, GHA, JobcentrePlus and People’s Community Fund.

The project aims to target local residents from north and north east Glasgow who have been on the margins of the labour market for some time and provide them with the appropriate employability skills to help them access job opportunities and improve their health & wellbeing.

Glasgow Kelvin College supports the project with much of the taught element of the programme, and Rosemount staff, Carol Wylie and John Bernklow, provide one to one information, support and guidance for all students. The guidance sessions support and encourage students to sustain the programme and to assist students to explore and agree goals for moving forward on completion of the course.

Several of the students are taking their next step, with two having already gone into employment and others progressing to volunteering, further training and exploring how to start their own business. Many of the participants are, in the meantime, enrolling as Flexible Learners with Glasgow Kelvin College on the European Computer Driving Licence qualification.

Residents of Broomfield Court Care Home in Barmulloch are getting the opportunity to explore their artistic flair with the support of three students from Glasgow Kelvin College.

Respected qualifications such as these will be of great benefit in helping the students with their employability skills and extremely valuable should they see their future in community arts.

Broomfield Court has regularly held exhibitions of residents’ art and this year will be no exception… however, they will have had a bit of extra help from Suzanne Armstrong, Vanessa Miller and Chloe Cartwright, three of the College’s BA Art & Design students.

Care-home Manager, Iain Ballantyne, said,

And the initiative has a double positive, as Ian Ballantyne, the Broomfield Court Manager is supporting the placement students to work through the Promoting Excellence Framework for Dementia Care (SSSC), and achieve a qualification in Level 2 Working with Dementia, a distance learning programme which is offered to staff at the care home.

Degree student, Suzanne Armstrong, added,

“

We really enjoy working with the residents at Broomfield, supporting them as they create their own individual pieces. They each have different levels of ability and engagement with the process and no two sessions are ever the same. They keep us on our toes and we feel quite inspired by the environment and the residents themselves.

“

These artworks will form a key part of Broomfield’s Art Exhibition and sale in September where family and friends will be welcome to view the work and buy up their favourite pieces, with the funds raised going towards project materials.

“Working in partnership with other organisations, including local schools and the college, is key to ensuring that we sustain links with our local community which bring benefits for residents, their families, our staff and volunteers.

“

On Monday afternoons, the students have worked alongside Margaret Cassidy, Leigh Gibbons, staff and volunteers in the home to encourage residents to be creative with wallpaper and fabrics reminiscent of the 1950s and 60s. This forms part of the Broomfield’s regular Arts programme. The students work closely with residents to create the images they want and express themselves in colour and texture by fashioning collages and decoupages.

The art project is an integral part of what we provide for our residents in the home, with outcomes on the day of personal satisfaction and fulfilment. Although the long-term impacts of this creative project are unclear, it is evident that residents enjoy the interactive elements of the work and very much involve themselves in meaningful activity.

Students Serve Up Success for Engineering Scotland....

Glasgow Kelvin College’s Level 5/6 Professional Cookery students did the College proud recently by providing a sumptuous buffet for the visiting Engineering Scotland Practical Lecture 2015 at Springburn Campus.

More than 70 delegates attended a very interesting series of presentations from representatives from both BAE Systems and Engineering Scotland. Iain Stevenson, Alex Bennett and Callum Vause of BAE delivered a talk on their Offshore Patrol Vessel Programme, followed by a Q & A facilitated by Gill Gray, Vice President of Engineering Scotland. This prompted lively discussion and the evening was a great success.

Organised by the College’s Business Development Team, this is the first time Engineering Scotland have held their annual Practical Lecture at the Springburn Campus and it’s unlikely to be the last. Gill Gray said; “On behalf of Engineering Scotland, I would really like to thank all the staff at Glasgow Kelvin College for hosting our Practical Lecture last night. The food was absolutely staggeringly good – from the students’ own home made blinis to their smoked salmon, smoked by themselves, to the wonderful presentation and their smartness and cheerfulness – it was just wonderful… I think that it was a tremendously successful event – but made all the more so by the students’ efforts with the food.”

Shetland Comes to GKC

Glasgow Kelvin College will be featured in the next series of the ITV detective drama, Shetland. Programme producers were so impressed with the Springburn campus that they asked to use it as a key location for the next series.

Some of our own Film and TV production students shadowed the film crew on the day providing them with fantastic experience of a real TV production shoot with a crew of more than 60.

The quality and diversity of the College’s estate makes it very attractive to film makers and there is a great opportunity to generate new income streams from this market. The Commercial team has been speaking to the Students’ Association about the possibility of using the talent from our own students and staff to produce a promotion film that will be the centrepiece of a marketing campaign to programme makers across Scotland and the UK.

Building Strong Foundations The College has been awarded a new Engineering Foundation Apprenticeship Pathfinder Programme starting in August 2015. The programme is open to 12 fifth and sixth year school pupils who will attend the College part time while they complete their school education to the end of sixth year. The programme also provides the Apprentices with work place experience through site visits and work placements, providing them with the breadth of knowledge and industry experience to progress to employment or further study. An information event for pupils, parents and industry partners will be held in the College in early June.

All Accounted For! HND Accountancy students at Glasgow Kelvin College were delighted to get an insight into the workings of a successful and diverse digital media company through a fact-finding visit to STV studios in Pacific Quay.

George Watt CA, the Chief Finance Officer at STV Group PLC , once again took time out of his busy schedule to talk with the 23 students that visited STV’s Glasgow studios. He discussed his career and his own experience within the organisation, which is one of Scotland’s most well-known brands, and gave the students a real sense of how their qualification can be applied within an exciting and dynamic company like STV. Tutor, John Murphy ACCA, was enthusiastic about the importance this plays in giving the students an idea of how their skills will be applied in the workplace. He said: “We’re extremely grateful to George Watt and to STV for their time and commitment in broadening the horizons of our students and giving them an insight into the opportunities available to them in the future.

Absorbing information from employers’ own experience is an incredibly useful tool for students, helping them to get a true taste of the industry.”

Nasrat Balogun, one of the 2nd year students, enthused: “George is the perfect example that if you don’t give up working hard on your studies you will get to your desired place.”

Her classmate, Gee Chong Shek, added; “Personally this was a great experience. I learnt a lot about the relevance of accountancy within a large business and how diverse accountants’ challenges are just by listening to George’s life experiences.”

This is the fourth year in which George Watt has contributed his valuable time and highlighted his commitment to encouraging new learners into the accounting profession. He said: “STV has strong connections with higher education institutions and we are always happy to welcome the HND Accountancy students to our office to show them not only how broadcast television works, but give them an insight into the practical application of the accountancy skills they are learning on their course. The Glasgow Kelvin College visit to STV aims to enhance the students’ studies with an appreciation of what is expected when they seek to join the jobs market. I wish the students the best of luck with their studies and future careers.”

Employability Students ‘Get On Their Bikes’!

Students from Glasgow Kelvin College’s NC Employability programme have joined forces with local organisations, The Bike Station and Glasgow Life, to help them complete their Health & Wellbeing units.

Under the brand, GK Velocity, the students have designed their own logo for their track suit tops and have been learning bike maintenance and cycling skills. The name Velo-city is a small play on words using the French for bicycle - vélo, and Velo-city can also be read as velocity or speed which is certainly appropriate for the students involved in this unique programme.

The groups are currently working towards a number of SQA Units including their Cycling Award, Cycling Safely Unit and Cycle Safety Maintenance Unit. All of the skills acquired throughout the course will be put to the test during an end of year journey from Glasgow to Lochwinnoch on 26th May where students will be responsible for planning routes, developing strategies for health and nutrition and of course enjoying the health related benefits of ‘getting on their bikes’!

This innovative project is also helping to develop their creative side as they’ve been making sculptures from old bike parts, producing some amazing results. Key to the programme is the confidence, communication and team-building which has developed and the students are going on from strength to strength.

Thanks to the project partners, The Glasgow Bike Station, Freewheel North, CKUK, Glasgow Life and College staff for their unstinting support of this group of learners.

Former Glasgow Kelvin College student, Siobhan Mackenzie, triumphed at the Greyfriars Tartan awards in Edinburgh last week!

Siobhan, from The Black Isle, achieved her 1st Class BA (Hons) Fashion Design at the College (accredited by Manchester Metropolitan University) last year and, after accomplishing a very successful internship with Glenisla Kilts, has gone on to set up her own fabulous design company, Siobhan Mackenzie, which gives a creative and inventive twist to tartan and traditional highland dress.

The Greyfriars Tartan design competition set out to challenge the traditional look asking fashion designers to use Greyfriars tartan to create a garment with the fabric.

The tartan was created in 2011 by Paul Moffat, a member of the Grassmarket Community Project.

The social enterprise works with vulnerable locals to develop new skills, gain self confidence and become more employable.

The Greyfriars Tartan Design competition was held last month with designers from around the world, as well as local talent, submitting their style visions. The awards took place during Edinburgh Fashion Week where the 26 submissions were showcased on the catwalk, and Siobhan walked away with the first prize of £1000.

Her proud tutors were there to witness her triumph and congratulate her in person.

GKC is working with Glasgow Clyde College to host events to encourage employers and young people to come in and chat about potential routes into apprenticeships, employment and maybe even further education. Basilio Almonte

meets our cookery students...

On 3rd March, as part of Fairtrade Fortnight, the Fairtrade Forum gave us the opportunity to meet Basilio Almonte who had travelled from the Dominican Republic to raise awareness of the impact of the Fairtrade organisation on cocoa farmers and communities. This visit supported Essential Skills development in citizenship and sustainability issues.

Basilio, the son of a cocoa farmer, has worked on the land from a very young age.

Now a Technical and Quality Manager, responsible for compliance with Fairtrade, Basilio is responsible for ensuring the organisation he works for, Conacado, produces high quality cocoa. Conacado produce around 15,000 tonnes of cocoa a year.

Basilio gave a presentation on the impact of the Fairtrade organisation on cocoa farmers to two classes of Hospitality students and one class of Uniformed and Emergency Services in the Easterhouse campus. It was an extremely successful event. Two members of the Fairtrade Forum and a translator came to the College with Basilio. Students learned a great deal from his presentation and developed a far deeper understanding of issues facing farmers and what life and work is like for cocoa farmers and communities in the Dominican Republic.

For decades private companies dominated the sector and the communities did not benefit. Now the Fairtrade organisation is involved there have been amazing changes which have made real differences to people’s lives.

As Basilio said, “One of the most satisfying aspects of my work with Conacado has been the community development projects funded by the Fairtrade Premium, which communicate the values and the philosophy of Fairtrade and show those who produce and buy cocoa products that through our actions we can have a more equal world.�

Brasilio showed us that, through the funded projects, water supplies are being installed and new school buildings are being built to support the communities. He made us realise that when we buy a Fairtrade product that the Fairtrade Organisation has made a real difference to so many communities.

Now when we eat a bar of Fairtrade chocolate we can think of the positive difference it is making.

Basilio was an engaging, lively speaker and made his presentation interesting and informative and we all found the event useful and gained a deeper understanding of citizenship and sustainability issues.

It’s all in the mind...

Eight young learners from Saint Mungo’s Academy recently completed an eight week course for mindfulness for young people in East End campus led by ESOL Lecturer George Gillen. Over the course of the eight weeks they experienced many areas of mindfulness ranging from mindful eating to movement.

The feedback was very positive with comments such as “I will use mindfulness in the future when I am anxious, nervous or scared to make me feel calm,” and “I would recommend mindfulness to fellow students when it’s time for an exam or they just need time to their self”.

It is hoped that this can be continued next year and talks are currently taking place between the school and the College.

Yes – quite a few folk are using Solar, the SQA online assessment service. But to make it easier for everyone (including the technically challenged) we’ve set up a system to help staff using solar assessments with their classes. What is SOLAR?

SOLAR is SQA’s online e-assessment service delivering secure, quality assured, pre-verified summative and formative assessments available to Schools, Colleges and Training Providers. These e-assessments cover a range of qualifications from National Certificate to Higher National Diploma (HND). The questions are developed by subject specialists within SQA centres and supported with training and technical expertise from the SOLAR Support Team in SQA.

What is important to you? Why is it important? What does it mean in practice?

These are the three questions that GKC staff and students were asked to consider when we set out to create Our Values.

Following on from an extensive series of workshops with staff and student groups, the answers were collated, analysed and grouped into related categories. This information was then used to form a set of core principles which was then further developed into a series of Glasgow Kelvin College core values.

Each value comes with a definition and a series of behaviours and aspirations associated with it. These are shown graphically on the Values Wheel below. This represents what we, both staff and students, have identified as being core to working or studying at GKC. Over the next six weeks, each of our six values will be promoted individually for one week. During that week, examples of behaviours and actions that demonstrate the particular value will be highlighted and shared.

Kelvin Student’s Grow at the Connect Community Trust Allotments

Students from Glasgow Kelvin College are providing some excellent support to the Connect Community Trust, Wellhouse Housing Associations and Quarriers. The NQ Business and Administration students are working with Connect A-Llots to organise an Open Day on Thursday 21 May 2015, 10am – 4pm to raise funds and awareness about their allotment project.

The business students have been responsible for the project management of the event with direction by Connect Community Trust and Quarriers staff. This is a real collaboration as the business students have liaised with other groups from the college including, Catering, Computing, Beauty and Art and Design.

Connect A-Llots along with Quarriers want to welcome local residents, social care organisations, local nurseries and schools and housing associations and other allotment projects to attend.

Visitors can look forward to some excellent home baking, cake decorating, raffles, face painting, bug’s hotel and have the opportunity to ‘plant a seed’. During the event there will be items of garden furniture such as wishing wells, wheelbarrow planters, planters and bird boxes for sale; these have been made by individuals from Quarriers to raise funds for reinvestment into the Allotments project. The students have thought of just about everything even including translation services for Polish residents in the area.

This is a win – win situation for both parties, the students will gain a qualification in ‘Leadership in Practice’ and the local community can look forward to a fun filled day out – not only will the students have grown in confidence the whole community will look brighter after a visit to the Connect A-Llots.

Clack and Yack On Thursday 23 April 2015 we had our first ever meeting of the Clack and Yack group in Springburn Campus during lunch.

The aim of this group is just to take some time out of our busy day and relax with other colleagues who are interested in various crafts.

This can be knitting, sewing, card making ‌..just folk who are a little crafty ... or want to be.

There are different levels of expertise in the group and it is hope we can help each other with projects and perhaps give some masterclasses in particular area.

We will also be sharing resources and tips and will set up a group on One Drive.

A Gem of a Win We would like to offer our CONGRATULATIONS to three of our HND Jewellery students who took part in The Scottish Gemmological Association’s Gemset Design Jewellery 2015 competition.

Nicola Fabian took first place, while Mariuz Suliga and Paula Sloan were Highly Commended.

All the entries from GKC used a combination of highly accurate traditional stone-setting, alongside cutting-edge 3D-design and manufacture, including 3D printing!

Community Achievement Awards

and Well Done to …..

The Building Services Engineering Team for reaching the finals and receiving special mention at the HV News Awards last week (the Vokera partnership was up for the Collaboration Award).

Also, two of our full time pre-vocational students in Vehicle Body Repair skills, Aaron Sangray and David Murphy, who went on a two-week work placement with Allied Vehicles did so well that they’ve been taken on as apprentices. Tutor Robert Murray is extremely proud!

Shoot the Show As part of the London Fashion Weekend at Somerset House, and as Guests of Canon, the imaging and optical giant, GKC students were involved in an event called 'Shoot the Show' This involved photographing two catwalk shows from the photographers pit. The first was the trend catwalk show and the second was the new Spring/Summer collection by designer Amanda Wakelely.

Despite this being a novel experience for the students some impressive images were produced.

As brand ambassadors for GKC the students should be commended. They presented themselves in a professional and enthusiastic manner throughout the visit.

Glasgow Kelvin has further developed partnership working with the Marie Trust programme, a city centre based organisation who offer daily services to people directly affected by homelessness, housing, and addiction issues. This carries on from successful work carried out by colleagues from legacy Stow College.

Initial progression routes range from Employment for one learner in Scottish Drug Forum, progression to ECDL within East End Campus, application to mainstream FE provision at Glasgow Kelvin in Community Development and also to Counselling and Social Science within Clyde College.

In addition 6 learners have also secured additional volunteering roles in local Community Projects which have enhanced their skills, experience and knowledge.

As part of Professional Practice, Glasgow Kelvin College Visual Art Degree students undertake placements at a range of arts venues across the city. These partnerships are arranged for mutual benefit and so range in timespan based on availability, opportunities, current projects and exhibitions.

Glasgow Sculpture Studios offered workshop technician places for two students, assisting with their spring exhibition programme in their fabrication studios.

One of our Year 3 students, Katie Riddell, assisted the Learning & Engagement Coordinator and project artist with their Creative Cargo workshops, over a three month period along the Forth and Clyde Canal. As well as providing assistance and back-up in a series of weekly events across the canal side community, Katie had the chance to run her own workshop and all the Art Degree students took part in a cruise on the barge at the end of the Winter Canal programme.

Projectability, offered a number of opportunities for our students to work with their client groups, assisting artists with their educational programme in the studios and working in partnership with their individual artists on collaborative projects for mutual benefit. Two students will also be returning to work on projects after graduation.

The Lillie Gallery offered two students the chance to work with the curator on the recent Adrian Wiszniewski print show in order to further their experience and understanding of how an exhibition is put together and how a gallery works on a daily basis.

Vanessa, Chloe and Suzanne from our Year 3 are running arts workshops at Broomfield Court Care Home. They spend 2 hours every week doing arts and crafts with the patients based around their recollections of the 1950/60s to try and jog memories. The care home has offered to put the students through a 'Working with Dementia' course which the nurses and care assistants undertake and will enable them to learn more about the subject and assist the patients and staff better.

They have also been put forward for a Napa Award, for working with others in the community. The winners will receive a certificate and an award for the college and for the home.

9 artists 1 meadow is a site specific art project by 3rd Year, BA Visual Arts Degree students at Glasgow Kelvin College, based in North Kelvin Meadow and presented in conjunction with ‘Open House Art Festival 2015’.

The project is being developed though close discussion and collaboration with local community groups such as The North Kelvin Meadow Campaign and The Children’s Wood.

The 9 participants will make work in direct response to this site resulting in 9 site specific art works.

Each student will follow their own route of investigation in which the resulting work, choice of subject matter and end location will be entirely individual. The work will be presented during Glasgow Open House Art Festival, the 2015 program includes just over 200 artists, with 47 exhibitions and 17 events happening across the entire city during May Day Bank Holiday weekend, 1st - 4th May. North Kelvin Meadow is situated at the back of the West Campus building, it was originally used as a sports ground for the local school and had a running track, sports area and a tennis court. Overtime the area fell into disrepair but in 1996 local people took charge of the area, removing rubbish, sowing grass seed and planting trees. The area is now a meeting place at the heart of the community, a place for children, families, community groups, dog walkers, local schools and Playgroups.

Community led initiatives have been set up to introduce children to outdoor activities, through The Outdoor Learning Club, the Community Garden and other creative activities. The site has however under threat from development; the proposal is to build 90 flats in the location.

The North Kelvin Meadow Campaign is a community group set up to campaign for the disused green space, the former Clouston Street playing fields, to be kept as a multi-use community green space for the people of Maryhill and others in the West End. The Children’s Wood are a community lead group dedicated to promoting outdoor learning for children, families, grandparents and the wider community, to connect children to nature, raise aspirations and bring people together.

The group promote outdoor learning activities through community volunteers who work with local schools and Playgroups. They are also working in close collaboration with Glasgow University to study the improvement of attention in teaching and learning through outdoor learning.

Glasgow Open House is run by a small group of Glasgow School of Art graduates. The committee are keen to engage with new audiences by opening up their living and working environments to neighbours, fellow artists and the public. The organisers aim to offer an alternative format for public interaction with art outside of the gallery, generating discussion around the way art is exhibited and consumed both in and out of doors. They are an artist-led, non-profit organisation that exists to support and maintain autonomous artistic activity.

Royal Glasgow Institute Education Programme 2015 Glasgow Kelvin College HND 2 students: DONATIONS BOX PROJECT. The aim is to create an object of aesthetic quality that engages the public (both adults and children) and encourages their gift to RGI. The design will include an interactive element. The donations box will be situated in the McLellan Galleries during the Annual Exhibition, however it will be on permanent display in the RGI Kelly Gallery, Douglas St Glasgow the rest of the year. There will also be space on the final piece for a small plaque to be positioned attributing the donations box to Glasgow Kelvin College.

Bridge 2 Business With the assistance of Andrew Tompkins, we have run a series of workshops led by invited arts professionals and business experts to help prepare graduates for life post-degree. There have been visits and workshops from a range of industry professionals including Stuart MacKenzie (RSA), Richard Walker, Marianne Greated, Elspeth Lamb, Penny Chivas and Helen Kalmijin as well as Glasgow Women’s Library, the Telfer Gallery and Open House.

Gallery North has featured a number of invited professional artists throughout the session including Ben Risk, Caroline Gormley and Gordon Livingstone.

Ben and Gordon took part in one week residencies, allowing students to experience the level and commitment required in the professional art world as well as access to advice and contacts for the future.

Students have also curated a series of exhibitions of their own work throughout the year.
