A future in medicine
Valedictorian Emily Su chose to go to Union College in New York instead of a better-known school because of its Leadership in Medicine Program, which grants her automatic acceptance to medical school. by Alina Bieschke and Kolbie Brightwell
More than two thousand miles northeast of Los Angeles in Albany, New York, a panel of admissions staff pressed a group of students with difficult, ethical questions relating to medicine. Among the group was senior Emily Su, who was challenged to think quickly, speak clearly, and portray her best qualities all at once within the two and a half hours in front of the staff and personally with a professor. The subsequent letter of acceptance confirmed Su’s commitment for the next eight years: Union College. Union College is a small, independent liberal arts college located in Schenectady, New York. Su viewed her acceptance into Union’s Leadership in Medicine (LIM) Program as the pinnacle of her high school career. “Combined medical programs like these are some of the most difficult programs to apply for and enter as a high school senior because all of them grant automatic acceptance to medical school without need for the medical school application, and most of them do not require the MCAT,” Su said. Su’s interest in these multiple-degree medical programs, otherwise known as combined medical programs, sprung from her parents’ support over her college applications. “My parents and I agreed that I would [only] choose from schools at which I got accepted to [their] combined medical program,” Su said. Although Su was accepted into some of the top universities in the country, including Stanford, Yale, and Rice, Union offered Su a unique opportunity for her medical career. In the LIM Program, Su will be able to earn her bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree over the course of eight years. “Since the LIM Program was my first-choice medical program, being accepted to the LIM Program was definitely the deciding factor for my choosing Union,” Su said. “Finding the right curriculum to fit my interests was the key, and I found exactly what I was looking for
