MANDATORY ONLINE TRAINING MODULES In mid-July, new students will be asked to log onto Blackboard to complete HPU 101: Live. Learn. Grow. This series of transitional modules will provide a central location for students to access information and also engage with educational content that assists in the academic, social and emotional transition from high school to college. Students will also be required to complete educational modules called AlcoholEdu; Sexual Assault Prevention; Prescription Pill Abuse Prevention; and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. You will receive instructions when these programs open in July.

HPU 101 FOR PARENTS In the weeks leading up to Move-In, parents will receive a weekly email with tips and advice as they prepare for their student’s transition to college and their own transition into HPU Parents.

GET INVOLVED! There are numerous ways your family can be involved with High Point University and further enrich the opportunities for students like yours. We encourage you to support High Point University by: • Serving as an Admissions Advocate by identifying potential students or volunteering for recruiting events. • Providing internship or professional development opportunities for our students through your network as a Career Connector. By expanding the opportunities available to students, you increase their ability to be prepared to enter the professional world after graduation. • Investing in student scholarships. Gifts of all levels enable the university to continue providing more than $75 million dollars in scholarship support for students who may not otherwise be able to experience the innovative academic environment and values-based learning opportunities offered through High Point University education. You may be interested in being involved at a leadership level through the President’s Leadership Council or Parents Council. F I R S T-Y E A R EXPERIENCE PEER MENTORS All incoming students at High Point University will be assigned a Peer Mentor. Peer Mentors are returning students who have volunteered to assist new students in their transition to HPU. Peer Mentors serve as a familiar face on campus, offering you support and guidance. Peer Mentor groups are organized by residence hall communities.

COMMUNITY MEETINGS & COMMUNITY AGREEMENTS Students will meet monthly to build relationships as a floor unit, address concerns as a community and discuss a specific topic related to the Common Experience theme. At the first Community Meeting, Resident Assistants facilitate the formation of a Community Agreement stating the expectations residents have for the community. The Agreement is revisited monthly and amended as needed.

PANTHER CHATS Panther chats are one-on-one conversations between Resident Assistants and residents that allow students to actively reflect on their experience at HPU.

COMMON GOOD SERVICE PROJECT We are asking all incoming students to bring a new copy of their favorite book from their childhood or adolescence. On Sunday afternoon, students will write an inspirational message inside the book that will then be delivered to HPU’s Community Writing Center and local elementary and middle schools to supplement their libraries.

As part of the “Culture and Cuisine Series,” students can experience authentic international or regional cuisines and learn about the culture that defines the location. In addition to offering an alternative menu that celebrates the month’s theme, students will enjoy faculty forums and live music events that reflect the culinary delight of the month. RESEARCH ROOKIES As you enter college, you start to consider what major you will choose. Students expect college majors to prepare them for jobs and advancement in their chosen careers, but the major is just a small part of what makes you prepared for the job market. A major may give you specific technical skills for one career path, but college is about preparing you for a lifetime of career possibilities. Thus, it is important to engage in experiences outside of the classroom that will help differentiate you from over 2 million students you will graduate with across the country in four years. One opportunity that stands out as transformative is independent mentored research or creative work. Over 87% of employers say they are more likely to hire and advance recent college graduates who have this experience.

We have a program that will help you get started. Our Research Rookies Program is a voluntary, two-semester program for first-year students designed to help get you involved in the culture of creative and scholarly work at HPU. The program offers students activities, talks, workshops and events that help you get started on an independent project with a faculty mentor in any field! Scholarly and creative independent work helps you develop the broad skills that make you more competitive for any future job you pursue. ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)

Upon admission to High Point University, all non-native English speakers are required to take an ESL (English as a Second Language) placement exam. The results of this exam will determine whether the student will be required to take 0–16 hours of credit-bearing ESL classes during the first 2 semesters at High Point University. Any required ESL classes will fulfill the Foreign Language portion of the General Education (Core) Requirements.

ACADEMIC ASSESSMENT All students will be required to participate in several assessments throughout the school year. The purpose of these assessments will be to evaluate the general education curriculum, student satisfaction and several other areas that are important to the operation of High Point University and the wellbeing of its students. Students who do not complete all required placement tests by the deadline will not be able to proceed in the registration process. Incoming transfer students will be emailed separate instructions about their registration process. Transfer students who did not attend the Transfer Orientation event must complete all placement tests by the date emailed to their HPU email account. The Piedmont Triad International Airport (HP/GSO) is located 30 minutes from our campus.

Complimentary airport shuttles are available for students that make reservations at least three days in advance and wear HPU gear at the time of check-in when they travel! When you wear HPU apparel, you help tell the world of the extraordinary education at HPU. So, students who wear a T-shirt, sweatshirt or outerwear that has “High Point University” printed on it will receive complimentary airport shuttle service.

Shuttles will run each Friday at 2:00 pm, 5:00 pm and 8:00 pm. Sunday shuttles will pick up outside the American Airlines baggage claim at HP/GSO at 6:00 pm, 9:00 pm and midnight. To make a reservation for shuttle service contact concierge@highpoint.edu at least three days in advance. Reservations not made three days in advance or cancelled with less than 24-hour notice will be charged a $20 fee.

AIRPORT SHUTTLES DURING SCHEDULED ACADEMIC BREAKS We offer an airport shuttle service as a convenience for our students. Shuttles travel to the Piedmont Triad International (HP/GSO), Raleigh-Durham International (RDU) and Charlotte Douglas International (CLT) airports for scheduled academic breaks. In order to secure a seat on a shuttle, students must make reservations by following these steps: 1. C omplete the e-transportation reservation form at www.highpoint.edu/concierge (select the transportation link) at least three days in advance. 2. Make sure you receive a confirmation email.

Fees for students without a reservation and/or forget to wear HPU gear will be charged: HP/GSO - $20 CLT/RDU - $40. For the safety and security of our students, shuttle service is provided exclusively for HPU students. You may be asked to present your Passport.

HIGH POINT AMTRAK STATION The station is located 10 minutes from our campus. Please contact Campus Concierge to schedule a time. VEHICLE REGISTRATION Incoming students who wish to have a vehicle on campus must register their vehicle online. Students can register one vehicle free of charge. Motorcycles, mopeds and bicycles must be registered. The decal for these are free. To log in and register, you will use your network username and password. While there, you should review the updated parking regulations. In order to register your vehicle for the 2022–2023 academic year, please go to the HPU Portal at my.highpoint.edu and click on the vehicle registration button. You will have two decals issued to be displayed on your vehicle. The smaller one goes on the inside, front top of your windshield, behind the mirror. The larger one goes on the exterior of the rear of your vehicle; do not install when vehicle/glass is hot. Vehicles must be HPU registered by midnight, August 31. If you need assistance with registering your vehicle, please call the Security Service Center at 336-841-9142.

Every High Point University student receives a unique email address that becomes their account for official High Point University communication. Monitor this account closely for campus announcements, billing information, academic messages and other communications.

Starfish is an early alert system that is accessed through Blackboard to support student academic success at High Point University. Through Starfish, faculty and university administrators can refer students to the appropriate support resource. Students have the ability to view all individuals who are in their ‘success network’ through Starfish allowing them quick and easy access to obtain the necessary support they may need. The goal of Starfish is to identify at-risk students as early as possible in the term to connect them with support in order to positively impact student success and persistence.

OIT provides a campus-wide all-in-one follow-me (swipe-to-release) printing system that allows students to print anytime from anywhere. This ensures printing is confidential to the user and reduces printed waste from documents left uncollected at the printer. Each multifunction printer is linked to a network print server, enabling students to print, copy or scan from a multitude of locations across campus.
