Welcome to the the Sport Management Newsletter!

February was a dynamic month for HPU’s Sport Management program, marked by hands-on learning experiences, student achievements, faculty contributions, and the continued impact of our alumni From high-profile externships to competitive success, our students and faculty demonstrated their commitment to excellence in the sport industry

Students participated in an externship with the Dallas Mavericks, gaining experience in marketing, operations, and fan engagement They learned from industry professionals and saw the inner workings of an NBA franchise. At the ASMA Conference, our case study teams showcased their skills, with one incredible team securing second place. It highlighted how the competition strengthened their teamwork and industry connections, preparing them for future roles in sports

Dr Tim Koba and Dr Amy Rundio were recognized for their research on financial literacy in sport management, helping students navigate industry challenges and develop essential skills We also celebrated alumni making an impact and highlighted junior Sophie Pekarek for her leadership, marketing internship, and experience with the Minnesota Lynx

Looking ahead, we’re excited for hands-on experiences, networking events, and industry collaborations. Upcoming competitions, internships, and guest speakers will provide valuable opportunities for growth.

performance, proudly representing High Point University with dedication The competition provided valuable experience in sport business, networking, and real-world problem-solving Our students are already looking ahead to next year, eager for another shot at the top spot!

Sophie Pekarek, a Sport Management major at High Point University, is making her mark through leadership roles and handson experiences in the sports industry She is passionate about growing opportunities for women in sports and developing skills for a future career.

She serves on the Executive Board for the Strickland Women’s LIFT (Leading and Inspiring Female Trailblazers) Fellowship as the Service Co-Chair, planning service projects that foster sisterhood and community impact. She’s also a member of Rho Phi Lambda, the Sport Management Honor Society, connecting with peers and professionals.

Recently, Sophie competed with the SMG Case Study team at the Applied Sport Management Conference in Cincinnati Her team placed second with a presentation for a WNBA expansion team, covering location, marketing, sponsorship strategies, and financial planning

Professionally, Sophie is a marketing intern for HPU Athletics, promoting events and enhancing the fan experience She also worked two summers with the Minnesota Lynx as a Sales and Service Game Day Assistant, focusing on fan experiences and engagement These roles have helped her build a network, gain leadership, and deepen her industry knowledge

February Review & March Playbook

February was a month of growth and achievement for our Sport Management students and faculty Students participated in an externship with the Dallas Mavericks, gaining valuable experience in marketing, game-day operations, and fan engagement At the ASMA Conference, one of two Sport Management Case Study teams secured a second-place finish, reinforcing the importance of teamwork and industry connections

Looking ahead, March brings exciting opportunities The first Sport Management Association meeting is set for March 3rd at 6:30 p.m. in NQSC 232, where students can connect and stay updated Later in the month, we welcome Megan Hovey, Associate Manager of Brands at Wasserman, as our guest speaker on March 21st. With so much ahead, we are thrilled for another month of learning, networking, and success within the department
