President's Circle Honor Roll of Donors | 2022-2023
PRESIDENT’S CIRCLE
Honor Roll of Donors
Philanthropic partnerships with our alumni, families and friends have been a cornerstone of High Point University’s success for nearly a century. Each year, leadership supporters are recognized in the President’s Circle Honor Roll of Donors for their generosity in the preceding fiscal year.
In the pages that follow, you will find the names of the individuals, foundations and corporations who have supported the university with lifetime gifts of more than $100,000, and annual gifts of $1,924 or more, between June 1, 2022, and May 31, 2023.
High Point University also celebrates those who have chosen to invest in the institution through the Sterling Society with a planned gift, and the dedicated alumni who have given for three or more consecutive years through the League of Loyal Alumni. The legacy of some of these extraordinary people spans more than 30 years and we are grateful for the generosity displayed by them and all our dedicated advocates who are honored throughout this Honor Roll.

“For generations, our family has lived by Luke 12:48 ʻTo much given, much is expected.ʼ Bill and I believe this is best achieved through service and financial support of our church and community. From our first visit with Dr. Qubein, we knew that the God, family, country philosophy was one we could stand behind. After years of undergraduate and graduate work, Dr. Qubein has shown us how a life skills education can truly be life changing. From a teenager to a polished young lady, we credit High Point University and the leadership of Dr. Qubein for the transformation of our daughter, Meredith.”

“We chose to support HPU because of the university’s values and ability of faculty and staff to help students succeed through discipline and focus. As long-time residents of the Triad, we hope to continue to see good growth from the school that will help to support the surrounding community. What is good for High Point University is good for the Triad.”

Supporting Student Passion with Scholarship: Darius Cummings’ Story
edication, commitment and sense of purpose are phrases that could be used to describe many HPU students, but a strong, tenacious will sets Darius Cummings apart from the rest of his peers.
Darius Cummings, of Hamden, Connecticut, is a member of High Point University’s Class of 2025 and was a recipient of the Diversity Opportunity Scholarship for the 2022-2023 academic year. This scholarship is awarded by the Office of Student Financial Planning and is given to students from a diverse background who have shown a high capacity for academic achievement.
“A lot of people don’t understand the importance of education, but this is a privilege that I don’t take for granted,” says Cummings. “If it were not for my scholarships, I would not have been able to remain focused on my classes and getting involved in different opportunities that have allowed me to practice what I learned in the classroom, in real-life scenarios and situations.”
As a double major in philosophy, as well as sociology and anthropology, Cummings is an active member of the campus community both academically and socially. In addition to a busy class schedule, Cummings is the president of the Philosophy Club, treasurer of Interfaith United, a brother and the Chapter Officer of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, the HPU NPHC Parliamentarian, and a diversity mentor. Additionally, Cummings works as an office assistant in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, and for campus facility operations as a part of the Gardens and Arboretum team. He is also a member of the Order of Omega, the Tri-M Music Honor Society and the International Thespian Society. In December 2022, he was honored as a Dean’s List recipient, and earlier in his undergraduate career he was selected as a Presidential Scholar and a Siegfried Leadership Fellow.
Since his freshman year, Cummings has also participated in several undergraduate research opportunities. He has worked on 3D Modeling H20 Molecular Orbitals with Dr. Keir Fogarty, he participated in a Philosophy and Media research opportunity studying Just War Theory & Attack on Titans, and he has worked on a Religion and Art opportunity where he studied Tibetan Thangkas. In April 2023, Cummings presented his research project, Understanding Tibetan Thangkas, at the HPU Undergraduate Research & Creativity Symposium.
Over the last two years at HPU, Cummings can see how much he has grown as a young adult and professional. This did not come without adversity though as during the first week of the Spring 2023 semester he was hit by a car. Many of his mentors and professors insisted that he take an easier courseload and role on campus, but he describes himself as a resilient person. Cummings still applied himself to his work and over the semester he accomplished many things including his research on Tibetan Thangkas, taking on new responsibilities in his clubs and organizations, a study abroad trip, and completing his semester coursework.
Despite the hardships he experienced earlier in the year, Cummings was selected to be a teaching assistant for Duke University’s Pre-College Programs. As a TA, he will assist students in middle and high school prepare for university courses. In addition to his work with Duke, Cummings will also work with Armchair Academics over the summer as a research and marketing intern. With Armchair Academics he will research Tibetan history, art, and literature, develop social media strategies for brand engagement, and gather data on potential brand sponsors.
Cummings is very grateful for the Diversity Scholarship and how it has impacted and supported his educational aspirations. “I feel really blessed to have something that motivates me to keep up with my grades and extracurriculars,” says Cummings. “I hope that through my work at HPU and in my future career, I can share my love of education with others.”
After graduation, Cummings plans to go into academia and pursue field studies in Asia. He is fascinated by the art, culture, history and religion of the western regions of China, Tibet, Nepal, and North India. Through his work, Cummings hopes to gain a deeper understanding on the theoretical, spiritual, and practical perspectives that tradition brings to our daily lives and how it manifests across civilizations.
How can scholarships support the dreams of young scholars, leaders, and achievers?
Julia Velasquez ’23: 2023 Trailblazer Award Recipient
On April 19, 2023, Julia Velasquez ’23 was honored in front of the entire High Point University campus during the university’s annual Honors Day as the 2022-2023 Elizabeth Miller Strickland Trailblazer Award recipient. Her hard work, perseverance, passion for service and determination over the previous four years established her as an integral member of the HPU community.
“I first met Julia as a part of HPU’s Science Advantage Camp, a summer bridge program for underrepresented minorities entering STEM majors,” says Dr. Kristin Ackerman. “Julia came into this campus with a level of confidence that I had never seen in a freshman. She is from Chicago and moving to North Carolina by herself is a bold first move that showcases her personality. She is organized, a planner, has a hunger to be involved and have influence, advocates for herself and consistently strives for personal growth.”
As an upcoming freshman, Velasquez described herself as a hard worker, leader and committed student. At HPU, she says that she was pushed to grow and develop as a public speaker, team member and leader. Through a multitude of programs and roles, she had the opportunity to learn the technical skills she would need to be an innovative researcher, but also the life skills she needed to become a mentor and advocate for other female students in STEM at HPU.
During her time as an undergraduate student, Velasquez was heavily involved with her department and student life. Some of this involvement included special research experiences, serving in the Student Government Association, membership in the Neuroscience Club and mentoring freshman students as a first-year navigator and peer mentor. As she grew in her confidence and abilities, Velasquez took on more substantial roles such as team leader for the Science Advantage Boot Camp at HPU and working as a supplemental instructor for students in biochemistry and psychology. At the start of her junior year, she was selected to join the inaugural cohort of Elizabeth Miller Strickland L.I.F.T Fellows (Leading and Inspiring Female Trailblazers). As a fellow, Velasquez mentored several other natural science majors who were chosen to be a part of the program. Through mentoring these students, Velasquez says she learned what it takes to be a good leader, to guide others and challenge them to rise to the occasion and learn what they need to be successful.
“It has been a privilege to help establish Mrs. Strickland’s vision of creating programs that empower women and leadership at HPU,” says Velasquez. “Through the support of her programs, I gained a tremendous amount of confidence in my communication skills and received incredible mentorship, which has allowed me to mature as a leader and to mentor the younger generations of students. I am grateful for the recognition and to be the third annual recipient of this transformational award.”
Velasquez graduated in May 2023 with her bachelor of science in neuroscience and a minor in psychology. She returned to HPU in Fall 2023 to pursue her master of science in biomedical science. After completing her master’s degree, she hopes to earn her Ph.D. before joining a professional research facility. Ultimately, Velasquez would like to return to High Point University and help establish a department of neuroscience so she can help teach the next generation of women leaders in the scientific community.
HPU Endowment
High Point University's endowment exists to generate strong long-term returns that support the University's mission of delivering educational experiences, that enlighten, challenge and prepare students to lead lives of significance in complex global communities. The endowment has historically supported the University's efforts to increase scholarship assistance to extraordinary students, support faculty research and add new academic programs and initiatives. In the current year, focus has also shifted to include funds designated to provide for the ongoing costs associated with maintaining current facilities of the University's missional priorities through unrestricted endowment gifts. As of May 31, 2023, the University's endowment is comprised of 454 funds valued at over $143 million.

“High Point University's remarkable success in North Carolina, where there seems to be a college or university on every corner, has been astonishing. Attending HPU (then High Point College) in the turbulent 1960s, the school was known for ʻIts Caring.ʼ The school certainly lived up to their reputation. My college experience has benefited me throughout my career. I owe HPU a great deal of gratitude in helping me and many others to graduate and serve our country.”

Linda and Timothy felt that the emphasis placed on students learning to be servant leaders through education resonated with their own belief that service to others is a driving force for long-term personal development and community advancement. This belief is what led the South Carolina couple to establish the Foggie Family Scholarship Endowment in February 2022. Through their scholarship, they hope they will be able to create a lasting impact on the lives and education of students from diverse backgrounds or those who serve within the Bonner Leader Program, an HPU initiative that connects students to non-profits and social innovation projects within the Greater High Point area.
“When we established our scholarship,” says Linda, “I felt it was important to use our resources to make higher education accessible for young adults at HPU while creating a lasting impression on the university and High Point communities. We hope that we will make a difference in the lives of our student recipients and build a legacy of service that results in inspirational, large-scale improvements in society. Our goal is to create world changers.”
Linda and Timothy have two sons, Elijah, HPU Class of 2024, and Tyson, HPU Class of 2027. When both of their children chose to attend HPU, the couple were excited to know their sons would receive an extraordinary education that would prepare them with the life skills and technical experience needed after graduation. Elijah is a member of the Honors College as a computer engineering major and is an active member of student life. He serves as a university ambassador and was a part of the inaugural cohort of the iBelong Male Mentoring program, where he had the opportunity to engage in networking and leadership opportunities led by the Office of Career and Professional Development. As a freshman, Tyson is double majoring in video game design and graphic design. He also participates in the Creative Arts Fellows program where he is exposed to a variety of transformational career and professional development opportunities.
Tim and Linda have been happily married for 23 years and enjoy traveling, spending time with friends and family, and keeping an active lifestyle. Tim received his bachelor of science in finance from Thomas Jefferson University and studied at Philadelphia University. Over the last several years, he has supported the family as a stay-at-home dad. In 2023, he joined the finance team at Tesla as a payroll processor. In 2001, Linda graduated with her degree in architecture from Thomas Jefferson University and in 2018 she earned her graduate certificate in real estate development and finance from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Most recently, she graduated from Columbia Business School with a master of business administration in corporate finance. Over the last 20 years, Linda has had a successful career in commercial real estate as a global executive. In November 2021, she joined Citi as the managing director and global head of real estate operations. Linda also serves on multiple boards of both public and nonprofit organizations across the United States and has been honored for her work as a trailblazer, leader and advocate for diversity, inclusion and innovation.
Families invest in student success.
Supporting Students Through Scholarship: A Spotlight on the Klein Family
n February 2023, High Point University parents, Joel and Kayla Klein, made a gift of $200,000 to the HPU Fund for Extraordinary Education. This fund is an important aspect of HPU’s culture, mission and vision as it assists in providing over $75 million in student scholarships every year. The Kleins’ support of the HPU Fund for Extraordinary Education will help to provide students with the opportunity to maintain focus on building their academic profile and developing necessary life skills.
“The mission and culture at High Point University mesh with our own values in a way we haven’t seen at other universities,” says Joel Klein. “The work being done on the campus is unique and as parents we are excited to help ensure all students are able to reap the extraordinary benefits of an education from HPU.”
Joel and Kayla are the proud parents of five children, Stephen, Jack, Claire, Kamryn and Vivienne. Their son, Jack, is a member of HPU’s Class of 2026 and is a physics major in the Webb School of Engineering. Since he arrived at HPU, Jack has been interested in the partnerships his department provided with NASA and the experiential learning opportunities he would receive through the program. The Klein family had been impressed with the university’s emphasis on a life skills education and the access their son had to unparalleled educational experiences from the beginning of their journey. As a family who enjoys teaching through action, Joel and Kayla wanted to demonstrate to their children how they could philanthropically support their new community.
“We are impressed by the standards that are upheld at High Point University. Their dedication to core values, commitment to character development, and service to others are all things that are important to us and have helped our son grow as a young man,” says Kayla Klein. “We hope that through our investment in the university and the HPU Fund for Extraordinary Education, we can further the educational experiences of other students at HPU.”
Kayla and Joel are the co-founders of FIZYK, LLC, an investment management firm, dedicated to providing innovative investment solutions to their client base. Joel, the CEO and CIO of FIZYK, LLC, is a graduate of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and has worked in the business and investment management industries for over two decades. He has served as an investment manager for groups like Blue Diamond Capital, LLC, and as a trustee for Answers 4 Kids Cancer. In 2018 he received his master’s in business administration from the University of Phoenix, and since then has authored a weekly commentary on the trend of U.S stock markets. Kayla began her career as a registered nurse and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation specialist (ECMO) for the Level III NICU at the Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. After several years she made the transition into the investment field where she oversaw the business development operations for an investment fund management firm. Since then, she founded a Chicagobased non-profit whose mission was to research rare childhood cancers and has helped found an education foundation for Center Cass School District 66. After founding FIZYK with her husband in 2016, she stepped into the role of Chief Growth Officer where she is responsible for maintaining the growth and overall trajectory of the company.
THE STERLING SOCIETY
The Sterling Society recognizes those who have notified HPU by May 31, 2023, that the University has been included in their estate plans. The generosity of planned giving donors strengthens opportunities for HPU's students, faculty and programs.
“We give to High Point University as a symbol of gratitude for all it’s given to us. In addition to an incredible education that prepared us for life after college, it also fostered an environment for us to find each other and life-long friendships. Our continued giving to HPU gives us pride knowing we have a hand in maintaining the school’s standard of excellence while also helping to ensure its continued advancement for generations to come.”

“I invest in HPU because the quality education I received at my alma mater has given me the means to pay it forward to today's generation. I also support the institution to honor the memory of my uncle, Dr. John Moehlmann, who taught English at HPU from 1975 to 2006. I am truly blessed to be in a position to give to a university who provided me with a solid foundation for my life and career.”
