AT HPU, YOUR FOUNDATION BEGINS EARLY for life skills, or what the business world sometimes calls “soft skills” — the ability to communicate with different people, present ideas clearly, work in a team, be coachable, be adaptable, problem-solve and persevere. First-Year Seminar on Life Skills with President Qubein and Friends for all freshmen is led by Dr. Nido Qubein, HPU’s president, entrepreneur and consultant to CEOs. The weekly seminar focuses on topics such as fiscal literacy, persuasive speaking, the art of negotiating and how to embrace change. Qubein also discusses the “rule of thirds” — investing one-third of life in earning, one-third in learning and one-third in serving. If you can gain the level of life skills in college that would otherwise take years of experience to amass in the real world, you will stand out.

INTERNSHIPS: EVERYWHERE AND ANYWHERE

HPU offers more than 50 innovative study abroad programs, ranging from semester-long opportunities in which students study at partnering universities around the world, to short-term “Maymester” programs in which students study for two to four weeks in one or more countries with peers and HPU faculty.

A network of support on campus prepares students to land impressive internships. Faculty with industry connections guide students to opportunities, while the Office of Career and Professional Development schedules one-on-one meetings with students and provides services ranging from resume creation to practice interviews.

My study abroad trip stretched me and required me to grow in all sorts of ways. But that’s what HPU prepared me to do – face the unknown with confidence and return a changed person. When it comes to preparing for a life of adventure, no university does it better than HPU.

UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH AS A FRESHMAN While many universities reserve research opportunities for upperclassmen or graduate students, HPU students are introduced to undergraduate research opportunities beginning their freshman year. Employers want graduates who can communicate well, be resilient and problem-solve. Those are the foundational skills of conducting research. HPU provides research opportunities for students in every major, from being coached by a faculty researcher on campus to landing impressive research experiences for undergraduates (commonly called REUs) through institutions such as the National Science Foundation, Duke University, the American Institute of Physics, Columbia University and others.

HPU IN NYC, WASHINGTON, D.C., L.A. AND BEYOND HPU students benefit from career connections and professional development opportunities across the country. During fall and spring breaks, HPU in the City takes students to New York City and Washington, D.C. for a behind-the-scenes look at what it’s like to work for major organizations such as Bloomberg, Google and the United Nations. The High Point Washington program is a semester-long partnership with The Washington Center, where students complete an internship in their field and learn from influential leaders in the nation’s capital. Media Fellows travel to Los Angeles to learn from entertainment industry executives. And the list goes on.

HPU’s approach to experiential learning may be best explained by the old Chinese proverb:

I hear and I forget. I see and I might remember. I do and then I understand.

They feed the hungry and find new ways to grow and distribute food in their city. They develop marketing campaigns for nonprofit organizations. They open books and share stories with refugee children who are learning to speak a new language. For HPU students, service learning classes connect theories with realworld practices. While students receive hands-on experience, local organizations and citizens benefit from their time and talents. Volunteering with the Boys & Girls Club as part of my psychology course provided me with a much stronger bond to the community. EMPLOYERS DRAWN TO HPU Numerous programs attract employers to campus, providing students with direct access to career, internship and exploratory opportunities. Career and Internship Expos bring a wide variety of employers to campus for a large-scale event, while focus fairs in specific majors provide smallgroup opportunities for networking. Employers also regularly visit the Office of Career and Professional Development, where they answer questions from students about working in their field and provide valuable advice on how to break into the industry. With due diligence and practice, I was able to introduce myself to Gartner through an exclusive Sales Career Fair held on campus. INNOVATION

As an HPU student, you will graduate college alongside 2 million people diving into a competitive workforce. Your experience in undergraduate research will help you answer an important and common question among employers and graduate schools: What sets you apart?

Students in all academic disciplines are given opportunities to partner with professors and engage in research, scholarship and creative endeavors as early as freshman year. HPU programs such as Research Rookies and the Summer Undergraduate Research Institute (SuRI) are part of a multipronged approach that gets HPU students involved early in their academic careers. As a result, they build compelling resumes and stand out to future employers and graduate schools.

HPU’s innovative approach to academics means the constant addition of new schools and programs to equip students with the skills to succeed in the world not as it is, but as it is going to be. Since 2005, HPU has grown from three to 10 academic schools and added new facilities all across campus. HPU’s new nursing program is one example. The inaugural nursing class will arrive to campus in fall 2022. Nursing students will 14

learn alongside students in other successful health care education programs, including doctoral degree programs in physical therapy and pharmacy and master degree programs in physician assistant studies and athletic training. New facilities for HPU’s School of Dental Medicine and Oral Health, School of Law and School of Optometry are also on the horizon.

Students Join NASA and NIH-Funded Projects HPU students Thomas Boudreaux and Kyle Corcoran journeyed to the Andes Mountains with Dr. Brad Barlow, associate professor of astrophysics and director of HPU’s Culp Planetarium. Together, they studied stars at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, one of world’s best-known observing sites for professional astronomers. They observed pulsating white dwarfs — dead, remnant stars that show variable brightness due to vibrations. Their research adventure is just one of many hands-on experiences HPU students enjoy. With two NASA grants and a National Science Foundation Grant, there is more than $430,000 worth of research being conducted within the Department of Physics. Kyle Corcoran (left) and Thomas Boudreaux (right) traveled with Dr. Brad Barlow, associate professor of astrophysics (center), to the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in the Andes Mountains of Chile.

Drs. Kevin Ford, dean of HPU’s Congdon School of Health Sciences, and Jeffrey Taylor, chair of HPU’s Department of Physical Therapy, were awarded a grant from Adidas. The grant, titled “The Female Athlete: Optimize and Promote Sport Movement,” will allow Ford and Taylor to research biomechanical components which differentiate female athletes among a variety of dynamic sport tasks. Students collaborate with Dr. Ford and preform state-of-the-art research inside HPU’s Biomechanics Lab.

Research for Every Discipline, Including Pre-Law When Amanda Vo and Emily Davis were studying pre-law at HPU, they partnered with a High Point law firm to build a database surrounding the economics of practicing law. Their research documented the amount of money new law school graduates have to pay in advance to practice law in different areas. The project not only prepared them to be successful in the future, but it also gave them something impactful to discuss during law school interviews. Today, both Vo and Davis have completed law school and are practicing attorneys. I noticed mentorship matters at HPU. Now that I’ve glanced at the Innovators in Residence, I have one question for myself: Who am I most excited to meet?

One of the components of HPU’s transformational process is the access to innovators the university intentionally provides to students. HPU knows that connecting students with people who have changed the world unlocks their ability to believe in themselves and accomplish goals they once didn’t know were possible. When students meet leaders like Netflix Co-founder Marc Randolph, HPU’s Entrepreneur in Residence, or Apple Co-founder Steve Wozniak, HPU’s Innovator in Residence, they receive valuable coaching and insightful feedback that impacts their development as a person. That was the experience of CeAnna Soper, a 2018 graduate from Hartland, Wisconsin. She pitched her business, Breezy Brush, to Randolph inside HPU’s Belk Entrepreneurship Center. And he gave her real feedback to incorporate into her product. Today, she continues to build her business while leading a successful career at VMware, a global leader in cloud infrastructure and digital workspace technology. “Marc is an active listener who put a lot of thought into his comments,” says Soper. “He asked me things I hadn’t thought about before, such as my marketing cost for each individual customer. He gave me plenty of homework when it came to moving my product forward.” Meetings throughout the year with global change agents and industry leaders teach HPU students the importance of actively listening and applying advice to their performance — a skill that future employers notice and appreciate. In short, students discover the art of the possible.

Engaging events foster connection The HPU campus thrives on connection. There’s the Activities Fair, during which students get connected with clubs and causes that interest them. There are Greek organizations, which present leadership and service opportunities. There are guest lectures, concerts, theater performances, art exhibits and more to expose the HPU family and the community to the arts. There are 16 Division I athletic events to attend, dozens of intramural teams on which to participate and 30 club sports in which to engage. A 500+ acre “classroom” Flags from more than 52 nations fly along the Gene and Jane Kester International Promenade to honor each international student’s home country. Along its brick pathways, quotations selected by faculty provide ideas for reflection. Sculptures of significant historical figures inspire students to pursue their goals. The Mariana H. Qubein Arboretum and Botanical Gardens bring holistic learning to life throughout campus. These elements were intentionally placed on campus to present learning opportunities at every turn. For example, Assistant Professor of Political Science Dr. Martin Kifer takes students on a guided walk around the Promenade, stopping at the sculptures of civil rights leaders. 1924 PRIME AND ALO: TWO OF THE NATION’S MOST UNIQUE LEARNING LABS

ACCORDING TO A STORY IN THE NEW YORK TIMES TITLED “HOW TO HIRE THE RIGHT PERSON,” employers say that taking a candidate to lunch or dinner is one of the most revealing and important parts of the hiring process. So imagine you just graduated and a prospective employer offers you an interview over lunch or dinner. What do you do if your university didn’t prepare you? While some universities provide an etiquette class during a student’s senior year, HPU provides students with four years of career preparation inside two different fine-dining restaurants. 1924 PRIME, HPU’s flagship restaurant, and Alo, HPU’s newest boutique hotel restaurant, provide the perfect atmosphere for students to engage in a unique type of learning laboratory. At 1924 PRIME, students practice their interview skills in a setting where they can develop confidence while at the same time gaining familiarity with international cuisine and culture. Similarly at Alo, students practice interviewing, focus on continental dining style, and learn to be comfortable with European dining etiquette and protocol. Once a week dining at either restaurant is included in the HPU dining plan. When HPU graduates enter the workforce, they not only know how to ace the interview, but they’re also comfortable and confident in various business settings. The Nido and Mariana Qubein Arena and Conference Center

This $120 million facility houses the HPU men’s and women’s basketball programs and is a venue for major events, speakers, concerts, entertainment, academic symposia and recreational activities. The arena seats 4,500 spectators and includes luxury suites as well as numerous other amenities. The Conference Center seats 2,500 visitors and is a space for growing undergraduate and graduate programs.

Kahn Hotel, adjacent to the conference center, provides experiential learning to students in programs such as the School of Communication’s Hospitality Management program and Event Management majors. $350 Million Innovation Corridor

Since 2005, HPU has invested $350 million in STEM programs, faculty and facilities, including the School of Dental Medicine and Oral Health proposed building. The result is a half-mile stretch of campus that HPU’s scientists call home. The Innovation Corridor is one of the university’s single largest investments and reflects HPU’s commitment to preparing students for the world as it’s going to be.

Library Construction Announced

Construction plans have begun for a new $80 million, 60,000-square-foot library that will provide ample study space for students and house a new Admissions Center. The building is expected to be completed in 2024, which will be HPU’s 100th anniversary.

The Wanek School of Natural Sciences

is a $65 million, 128,000-square-foot facility that features four stories of innovative lab and classroom space, as well as the Culp Planetarium. The 6,000-square-foot planetarium and lecture room space includes 125 seats and a 50-foot dome with a 4K projection screen and a state-ofthe-art surround sound system. The Wanek School of Natural Sciences opened in the fall of 2019.

When we hit the field, court, water or any surface, people know we’re there to compete. And, if they don’t immediately see it, our student section — Purple Reign — will remind them. THE CHAPEL AND RELIGIOUS LIFE OFFICE IS A PLACE OF INCLUSION. With students representing all 50 states, 37 countries and an array of faiths and backgrounds, HPU is dedicated to fostering the religious life of students from all backgrounds. The Chapel and Religious Life Office provides year-round programming. Catholic students have Mass where they can worship. Jewish students have a vibrant Hillel. And each year, students of all backgrounds come together for an interfaith Iftar — a meal celebrated by Muslims during Ramadan.

Interfaith Engagement In keeping with its Christian heritage, High Point University practices radical hospitality to people of all faiths and takes great pride in raising the bar for positive multifaith and interfaith collaboration and service. HPU was recently named the interfaith university Rookie of the Year by the Interfaith Youth Core, one of America’s leading interfaith engagement and service organizations. This recognition comes in response to student-led efforts to promote collaboration, service, understanding and appreciation for difference among religious and spiritual organizations on campus. A group of HPU students took part in a fall pilgrimage to Asheville, North Carolina. The group volunteered their time at Haywood Street’s Downtown Welcome Table where they served hot meals to the homeless.

And while diverse programming aids in the goal of touching as many lives as possible, a dedication to community serves as another means of fostering religious life at HPU.

Just before graduating from HPU, Jacob Lancaster, ‘20, right, landed a full scholarship to Duke University’s School of Divinity thanks to guidance from professors like Dr. Chris Franks, chair of the Department of Religion and Philosophy.

HPU provides impactful mentors to guide students throughout their college journey and more importantly, throughout their lives. Students don’t merely enroll at HPU, they join the HPU family. It’s the conversation over a cup of coffee, the encouraging email from a Silicon Valley veteran or a congratulatory high-five from a professor on graduation day. Mentorship takes many forms. It happens everywhere on High Point University’s campus. Here are just a few examples:

This scholarship was a confirmation of my journey and how well HPU prepared me. Professor Franks takes what he teaches in the classroom and shows students how to apply that to their future.

What constantly set me apart from a field of qualified candidates was the real-world experience I received at HPU and the attitude they instilled within me to never be afraid of a challenge. Dr. Lukow never failed to keep me motivated, and I cannot thank her enough for that. Every aspect of this university prepares students to go against the best of the best in the workforce.

The combination of learning from faculty who care, serving as Dr. Titus’s student instructor, conducting research and presenting at professional conferences prepared me to lead my own lab. Without the type of mentorship I received from HPU, I can’t imagine what college would have been like.

HPU instilled in me so much more than I ever expected, and it starts in the classroom with professors who care about your success. It spreads into how you handle yourself in meetings, perform in job interviews and how you carry yourself as a professional. It is allencompassing.

Dr. Tarara believed in me right from the start. He was caring but held me accountable. I needed a mentor like him to help me choose the right degree path. He has taught me as much about life as he has about exercise science. It’s an incredible feeling knowing that you have mentors who have your back and truly care.

I love that Professor Brown, like all HPU faculty members, has only a small group of advisees. And I appreciate that she specializes in my interest. She has really taken the time to get to know and care about me.

She works to keep the food court, Starbucks, study spaces and student recreation center clean. But her bigger job is to encourage students every day. She knows students by name, their class schedules, what internships they’re applying for and when they need some words of encouragement. Vernell is one of many committed staff and faculty members who reflect an intentional campus culture that supports you at every turn.

I get so involved with the students. I cry with them, I pray with them … I can tell when they’re stressed or having good and bad days. Shuttles — The Transportation Department provides students with a convenient, safe and secure method of transportation. Campus shuttles take students to their classes and residence halls, while others take students to local retail establishments and regional airports. Safe Access — A key card is required for access to all academic buildings and dorms. Residence hall card-access is given to students who live in the halls. 24/7 Student Life Presence — Student Life staff are on call 24 hours

Cashless Campus — The Passport Card is the only form of payment accepted on campus. It frees students from having to carry cash and also allows family members to easily deposit funds into their student’s campus account. Should an emergency situation arise, advisories are sent to the HPU family via text message, email, voice message, campus phones, campus computers, social media, the HPU website and an outdoor PA system.

As an undeclared student, you will partner with a Success Coach who is passionate about helping you discover a major that is a great fit for you, while helping you make positive connections with organizations on campus in which you have interest. This happens as early as the December before you enroll for early decision students, or the March before for regular admitted students. You will have support and guidance from a caring Coach who understands the various options available to you.

You aren’t the only student who entered college as undeclared — in fact, it is common across the entire nation! Sometimes we learn best from someone like us — a peer. First-Year Navigators are HPU students selected by the Office of Student Success to mentor first-year students. As an undeclared student, you will be connected with First-Year Navigators who were once undeclared, too. They know exactly what you are going through and will help you explore your options.

The Presidential Scholarship Program The Presidential Scholarship Program recognizes incoming freshman who demonstrate outstanding achievement, good citizenship, strong leadership and exceptional scholarship during high school. Your undergraduate admission application serves as your Presidential Scholarship application — there is no separate application required. But priority is given to Early Decision and Early Action applicants.
