PILLARS

EDUCATION

DEVELOP LIFE SKILLS

Our investment in each student’s success goes much deeper than their discipline — we are committed to equipping students with the life skills necessary to be successful in their career and in life’s daily interactions. We use common exchanges and interactions — an interview over a meal at a fine dining restaurant, for example — to teach the art of persuasion, effective communication and other skills that help HPU students stand out.

FOSTER YOUR VALUES & BUILD CHARACTER

High Point University is among the John Templeton Foundation’s Top 100 Colleges that Encourage Character Development. It is in our DNA to graduate learned young people who are grounded in sound moral decision-making and framed with good character.

GAIN PRACTICAL

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING

Experiential learning accounts for 25% of the academic hours in each major at HPU. Students are educated in and out of the classroom through labs, studios, career shadowing, internships, research, study abroad and professional settings to gain real-world experience within their discipline.

EXPAND KNOWLEDGE THROUGH ACADEMIC

EXCELLENCE

Become proficient in academic disciplines (known as majors) taught by stellar faculty aided by top-notch resources. This is expected at top accredited universities around the world, but this is also where the academic model for some universities begins and ends. At HPU, this is the foundational pillar that supports the pillars above.

you

VIRTUALLY EVERY PIECE OF COLLEGE MATERIAL YOU RECEIVE IS ABOUT THE COLLEGE – NOT ABOUT YOU! But at High Point University, we’re innovative and highly focused on helping you transform into the person you want to be. So, throughout this book, we’ve included Journey Notes designed to help you stop and reflect on the type of person you want to become.

1.

HPU is a transformative place that can help you transform into who you were created to be. Use the Journey Notes found throughout this transformational guide to consciously map your strategy for achieving a life of success and significance. We encourage every student on our campus to dream big. And remember these words from HPU President Nido R. Qubein:

2.

Your present circumstances don’t determine where you go; they only determine where you start.

The Journey Notes throughout include important questions you should ask yourself now. Questions include, “What companies or organizations would I be interested in working for someday?” and “What experiential learning opportunities are most important to my future?” Consider each important question NOW so you’ll be prepared once you begin your freshman year. By arriving to college prepared, you’ll maximize your experience and graduate ahead of the competition! Interact with the lists provided in each Journey Note. Not only is space included for you to write your own goals and dreams, but HPU has also provided tons of options so you can know about exciting opportunities on the horizon.

education HPU GRADUATES STAND OUT FROM THE SEA of new faces entering the workforce. Companies that employ HPU alumni and flock to campus to recruit students confirm this. That’s because the university’s educational model is grounded in life skills. Students embark on a one-of-a-kind journey when they enroll at HPU. Each student is paired with a Success Coach to guide them as they transition to college. They have access to a team of advisors inside the Office of Career and Professional Development who help them build their marketability for internships and careers. Through their coursework, much of which is dedicated to experiential learning, students begin to develop their portfolios and relationships with professors who embody a growth mindset. They study abroad in other countries, conduct high-level undergraduate research earlier than students at other universities and meet global innovators on campus, such as Apple Co-founder Steve Wozniak, HPU’s Innovator in Residence, and Netflix Co-founder Marc Randolph, HPU’s Entrepreneur in Residence. These efforts result in 98% of graduates employed or continuing their education within 180 days of earning their degree. Life skills. You need them, employers demand them and HPU teaches them. It’s part of what distinguishes HPU graduates from other universities.

HPU FOCUSES ON THIS CRUCIAL ELEMENT THAT’S OFTEN MISSING AT OTHER COLLEGES.

SKILLS Life Skills (n): Capabilities that outlast and extend beyond technical skills, but

allow one to communicate, build relationships, continuously grow and thrive in competitive environments. Adaptation amid rapid

change. Understanding that to work harder, one must work smarter. Accepting failure as the price for learning and developing a growth mindset. Navigating complex situations without being intimidated by life’s obstacles. What employers want in new hires.

HPU graduates are coachable and willing to grow, which is why they’ve been phenomenal in our leadership program. — Ryan Torchia, Regional Vice President at Gartner YOUR COLLEGE EDUCATION SHOULDN’T ONLY FOCUS ON the attainment of a diploma. An extraordinary, holistic education also should be about your personal transformation and professional development. We live in a “figure it out” world. Think about it — the technology you grew up with has changed tremendously. And what you know today will be different tomorrow. You won’t just receive a degree at High Point University. Your HPU experience will include hundreds of hands-on learning opportunities that transform your abilities to solve complex problems, adapt, work well with others and build a fulfilling career.

§

These skills — what HPU calls Life Skills — are exactly what major employers (the kind for which you’ll want to work someday) say they need but aren’t finding in most college graduates. HPU surveyed more than 500 executives at organizations with 5,000 to 25,000 employees. Their answer is clear: 65% of those executives said they’d rather colleges instill graduates with life skills, such as the ability to communicate, collaborate, solve problems and adapt, as opposed to imparting technical skills, such as specific software, hardware or specialized training on a specific subject. At HPU, while you become an expert in your field of choice, you’ll also develop life skills along your journey.

I need to take the Life Skills Quiz to discover more about how life skills will benefit my future career or graduate school opportunities.

I put the life skills I gained at HPU into practice daily. And while I appreciated my education and my campus as a student, I understand the context of the HPU experience in the real world now that I’ve worked at major companies like Google and Duolingo. why HPU

LIFE

INVESTS in

Employers consistently report that new hires don’t work out for reasons such as coachability and adaptability rather than technical competence. This HPU survey of more than 500 executives at organizations with 5,000 to 25,000 employees is one example of these reports. HPU faculty listen to the demands of the marketplace and prepare students to excel in the areas that matter most.

SKILLS How You’ll Put Life Skills to Work

If you’re still curious about HPU’s approach to helping you develop your life skills, consider these scenarios: T he CEO of your dream company sits next to you on a plane. What’s your move?

At HPU, students learn that before they can sell anything, they have to sell themselves. That’s where HPU’s Professional Selling Program, Sales Labs and unique campus facilities like the airplane fuselage come in.

You will be with the help of HPU’s Belk Center for Entrepreneurship, where students have pitched ideas to Netflix Co-founder Marc Randolph, HPU’s Entrepreneur in Residence, and Apple Co-founder Steve Wozniak, HPU’s Innovator in Residence.

At HPU, students are encouraged to be bold when looking for career opportunities and to push beyond our limits. AT HPU, YOUR FOUNDATION BEGINS EARLY for life skills, or what the business world sometimes calls “soft skills” — the ability to communicate with different people, present ideas clearly, work in a team, be coachable, be adaptable, problem-solve and persevere. First-Year Seminar on Life Skills with President Qubein and Friends for all freshmen is led by Dr. Nido Qubein, HPU’s president, entrepreneur and consultant to CEOs. The weekly seminar focuses on topics such as fiscal literacy, persuasive speaking, the art of negotiating and how to embrace change. Qubein also discusses the “rule of thirds” — investing one-third of life in earning, one-third in learning and one-third in serving. If you can gain the level of life skills in college that would otherwise take years of experience to amass in the real world, you will stand out.

My most impactful moment at HPU was the First-Year Life Skills Seminar, where President Qubein explained the reality of life after college. His lessons continue to impact my mentality and overall view of life. —Alexi Becer, Class of 2018, Marketing Coordinator at Calvin Klein in New York

How HPU makes every moment a

PREMIER LIFE SKILLS Experience

HPU STUDENTS ARE PREPARED TO LEAD BECAUSE THEY ARE ARMED WITH MANY REAL-WORLD EXPERIENCES.

A quarter of everything taught at HPU has an experiential component because professors want students to stretch

themselves, make professional connections, work on campus and in the community, and find out firsthand what real means. Students then discover that experience is the best teacher, and with the university’s opportunities for internships, study abroad, research, service learning and much more, they graduate prepared and ready to go.

The opportunities HPU will provide you to gain real-world experience is too long to list here, but these pages provide a glimpse.

STUDY ABROAD PROGRAMS

INTERNSHIPS: EVERYWHERE AND ANYWHERE

HPU offers more than 50 innovative study abroad programs, ranging from semester-long opportunities in which students study at partnering universities around the world, to short-term “Maymester” programs in which students study for two to four weeks in one or more countries with peers and HPU faculty.

A network of support on campus prepares students to land impressive internships. Faculty with industry connections guide students to opportunities, while the Office of Career and Professional Development schedules one-on-one meetings with students and provides services ranging from resume creation to practice interviews.

My study abroad trip stretched me and required me to grow in all sorts of ways. But that’s what HPU prepared me to do – face the unknown with confidence and return a changed person. When it comes to preparing for a life of adventure, no university does it better than HPU.

HPU prepares students to land internships at impressive organizations, including People Magazine, Tesla, the National Basketball Association, Capitol Hill, Oscar de la Renta, Disney, the “TODAY” show, UBS, Goldman Sachs, Chick-fil-A headquarters, Trip Advisor, NASA, the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, Polo Ralph Lauren Corporation, Volvo, Bank of America, Make-A-Wish Foundation and many others. Dr. Doug Hall in the Office of Career and Professional Development has helped me since day one. I remember sitting in his office telling him I wanted to work on Capitol Hill. He assisted me with perfecting my LinkedIn profile, my resume and told me he’d keep an eye out for any opportunities.

UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH AS A FRESHMAN While many universities reserve research opportunities for upperclassmen or graduate students, HPU students are introduced to undergraduate research opportunities beginning their freshman year. Employers want graduates who can communicate well, be resilient and problem-solve. Those are the foundational skills of conducting research. HPU provides research opportunities for students in every major, from being coached by a faculty researcher on campus to landing impressive research experiences for undergraduates (commonly called REUs) through institutions such as the National Science Foundation, Duke University, the American Institute of Physics, Columbia University and others.

LEARNING THROUGH SERVICE

HPU IN NYC, WASHINGTON, D.C., L.A. AND BEYOND HPU students benefit from career connections and professional development opportunities across the country. During fall and spring breaks, HPU in the City takes students to New York City and Washington, D.C. for a behind-the-scenes look at what it’s like to work for major organizations such as Bloomberg, Google and the United Nations. The High Point Washington program is a semester-long partnership with The Washington Center, where students complete an internship in their field and learn from influential leaders in the nation’s capital. Media Fellows travel to Los Angeles to learn from entertainment industry executives. And the list goes on.

HPU’s approach to experiential learning may be best explained by the old Chinese proverb:

I hear and I forget. I see and I might remember. I do and then I understand.

They feed the hungry and find new ways to grow and distribute food in their city. They develop marketing campaigns for nonprofit organizations. They open books and share stories with refugee children who are learning to speak a new language. For HPU students, service learning classes connect theories with realworld practices. While students receive hands-on experience, local organizations and citizens benefit from their time and talents. Volunteering with the Boys & Girls Club as part of my psychology course provided me with a much stronger bond to the community. Forming relationships with the children and staff really helped me apply the social issues we learned about in class in a fun and meaningful way. —Lauren Rubenstein, ‘16, Clinical Psychology Doctoral Candidate at Sam Houston State University

—Lona Williams, ‘17, Operations Assistant at Scale Management in Beverly Hills, California

We had the opportunity to be in the heart of the industry. We met with different professionals who work in many sectors of entertainment, and it was a great networking opportunity for us.

EMPLOYERS DRAWN TO HPU Numerous programs attract employers to campus, providing students with direct access to career, internship and exploratory opportunities. Career and Internship Expos bring a wide variety of employers to campus for a large-scale event, while focus fairs in specific majors provide smallgroup opportunities for networking. Employers also regularly visit the Office of Career and Professional Development, where they answer questions from students about working in their field and provide valuable advice on how to break into the industry. With due diligence and practice, I was able to introduce myself to Gartner through an exclusive Sales Career Fair held on campus. HPU brought the opportunities to my doorstep, and with their help in preparing, I was able to launch my career. —Alexander Gross, ‘17, Account Executive at Gartner in Fort Myers, Florida

INNOVATION

As an HPU student, you will graduate college alongside 2 million people diving into a competitive workforce. Your experience in undergraduate research will help you answer an important and common question among employers and graduate schools: What sets you apart?

Students in all academic disciplines are given opportunities to partner with professors and engage in research, scholarship and creative endeavors as early as freshman year. HPU programs such as Research Rookies and the Summer Undergraduate Research Institute (SuRI) are part of a multipronged approach that gets HPU students involved early in their academic careers. As a result, they build compelling resumes and stand out to future employers and graduate schools.

HPU’s innovative approach to academics means the constant addition of new schools and programs to equip students with the skills to succeed in the world not as it is, but as it is going to be. Since 2005, HPU has grown from three to 10 academic schools and added new facilities all across campus. HPU’s new nursing program is one example. The inaugural nursing class will arrive to campus in fall 2022. Nursing students will 14

learn alongside students in other successful health care education programs, including doctoral degree programs in physical therapy and pharmacy and master degree programs in physician assistant studies and athletic training. New facilities for HPU’s School of Dental Medicine and Oral Health, School of Law and School of Optometry are also on the horizon.

Throughout the year, faculty and students conduct, present and publish high-level research in numerous fields. Below are just a few highlights:

Students Join NASA and NIH-Funded Projects HPU students Thomas Boudreaux and Kyle Corcoran journeyed to the Andes Mountains with Dr. Brad Barlow, associate professor of astrophysics and director of HPU’s Culp Planetarium. Together, they studied stars at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, one of world’s best-known observing sites for professional astronomers. They observed pulsating white dwarfs — dead, remnant stars that show variable brightness due to vibrations. Their research adventure is just one of many hands-on experiences HPU students enjoy. With two NASA grants and a National Science Foundation Grant, there is more than $430,000 worth of research being conducted within the Department of Physics. Kyle Corcoran (left) and Thomas Boudreaux (right) traveled with Dr. Brad Barlow, associate professor of astrophysics (center), to the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in the Andes Mountains of Chile.

Drs. Kevin Ford, dean of HPU’s Congdon School of Health Sciences, and Jeffrey Taylor, chair of HPU’s Department of Physical Therapy, were awarded a grant from Adidas. The grant, titled “The Female Athlete: Optimize and Promote Sport Movement,” will allow Ford and Taylor to research biomechanical components which differentiate female athletes among a variety of dynamic sport tasks. Students collaborate with Dr. Ford and preform state-of-the-art research inside HPU’s Biomechanics Lab.

Research for Every Discipline, Including Pre-Law When Amanda Vo and Emily Davis were studying pre-law at HPU, they partnered with a High Point law firm to build a database surrounding the economics of practicing law. Their research documented the amount of money new law school graduates have to pay in advance to practice law in different areas. The project not only prepared them to be successful in the future, but it also gave them something impactful to discuss during law school interviews. Today, both Vo and Davis have completed law school and are practicing attorneys. ACCESS to

innovators

HPU is the only University that I recommend. —Steve Wozniak, Co-founder of Apple Computer and HPU’s Innovator in Residence

I noticed mentorship matters at HPU. Now that I’ve glanced at the Innovators in Residence, I have one question for myself: Who am I most excited to meet?

One of the components of HPU’s transformational process is the access to innovators the university intentionally provides to students. HPU knows that connecting students with people who have changed the world unlocks their ability to believe in themselves and accomplish goals they once didn’t know were possible. When students meet leaders like Netflix Co-founder Marc Randolph, HPU’s Entrepreneur in Residence, or Apple Co-founder Steve Wozniak, HPU’s Innovator in Residence, they receive valuable coaching and insightful feedback that impacts their development as a person. That was the experience of CeAnna Soper, a 2018 graduate from Hartland, Wisconsin. She pitched her business, Breezy Brush, to Randolph inside HPU’s Belk Entrepreneurship Center. And he gave her real feedback to incorporate into her product. Today, she continues to build her business while leading a successful career at VMware, a global leader in cloud infrastructure and digital workspace technology. “Marc is an active listener who put a lot of thought into his comments,” says Soper. “He asked me things I hadn’t thought about before, such as my marketing cost for each individual customer. He gave me plenty of homework when it came to moving my product forward.” Meetings throughout the year with global change agents and industry leaders teach HPU students the importance of actively listening and applying advice to their performance — a skill that future employers notice and appreciate. In short, students discover the art of the possible.

What set me apart was the real-world experience I received at HPU and the attitude they instilled within me to never be afraid of a challenge. MIKAELA CAMPBELL, ‘18 ASSOCIATE MANAGER, GLOBAL PARTNERSHIPS AND MEDIA NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION

UCCESS My time at HPU was such a growth experience for me. It prepared me to be a leader and gave me confidence in my creative skills. HPU also gave me the drive to contribute ideas in creative collaboration meetings for upcoming Disney+, Animation and 21st Century Studios films. MICHAELA MUCHA, ‘18 DESIGN MANAGER, CREATIVE MARKETING DISNEY+

By far one of my favorite lessons from Dr. Qubein is establishing great communication skills — it has been the foundation to the success I’ve had in my life. Networking comes organically by having great communication skills. This has been revolutionary in my career. JAMES JADOTTE, ‘13 PROGRAM MANAGER, HIRING DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY GOOGLE ™

Get involved on campus. Find something you love and dive in. Time flies, so being involved in something you care about is the best way to get the most out of the college experience. NICK DAVIS, ‘16 ACCOUNT EXECUTIVE SAS

One of the things I love so much about High Point is the willingness to give back to others. I was involved in Alpha Phi Omega, which is a coed service fraternity. It gave me abundant opportunities to help people in the community. I also learned ways to communicate with different people. HPU’s culture of wanting to help others is just contagious. DR. MARY FUNKE, ’13 EMERGENCY ROOM DOCTOR WAKE FOREST BAPTIST HEALTH AND DUKE HEALTH

High Point University helped me prepare for my future and achieve my goals. HPU allowed me to see the benefits of being involved on campus and the rewards of hard work and persistence. NIA PAGE, ‘18 PH.D COUNSELING CANDIDATE AT UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA

HPU’s Tuition-Free Master’s Degree IN COMMUNICATION AND BUSINESS LEADERSHIP

It’s never too late to plan for your future. When you complete your undergraduate degree at HPU, you’ll be eligible to pursue HPU’s tuition-free master’s degree in communication and business leadership. The seven benefits listed below will help you further understand how HPU’s tuition-free master’s degree is the obvious choice—one you won’t find on any other college campus.

1. SAVE NEARLY $40,000 IN TUITION Choosing the tuition-free master’s degree at High Point University, ranked No. 1 for innovation, can save you nearly $40,000 in tuition costs. Did we mention you won’t find another university offering this tuition-free opportunity right now? 1

2. FOREVER DIVERSIFY YOUR CAREER OPTIONS This master’s degree in communication and business leadership is beneficial to you regardless of the major you select for your undergraduate degree. EVERYONE should be equipped with the leadership and life skills necessary to thrive in the global, ever-competitive marketplace! The master’s curriculum will focus on the following crucial areas: • Leadership strategies and tactics • Negotiations • Interpersonal and intercultural communication • Persuasion and positioning skills • Complex problem-solving and decisionmaking skills 24

|

Extraordinary Education

3. EARN MORE MONEY THROUGHOUT YOUR LIFETIME Not only can this graduate degree complement any undergraduate degree and prepare you for a lifetime of success, but graduate degree recipients earn, on average, $17,000 more per year than someone with only an undergraduate degree. In only six years, you could earn $100,000 MORE than your peers who only earned a bachelor’s degree! 2

4. GAIN RESUME-WORTHY EXPERIENCE WHILE YOU EARN YOUR MASTER’S DEGREE HPU’s master’s degree in communication and business leadership is steeped in experiential, real-world learning. So while you’re earning your master’s, you’ll also be gaining work experience as part of the curriculum. You should expect no less from The Premier Life Skills University that has always focused on real-world, experiential learning. When you graduate, you’ll be ahead of the competition with a robust resume and a graduate degree.

5. CRISIS-PROOF YOUR CAREER Numerous studies and surveys show that graduate degree holders were more likely to stay employed during the global pandemic than were bachelor’s degree holders. Earning your graduate degree will increase the likelihood that your career can remain strong through inevitable disruptions to the global marketplace.3

6. LEARN FROM PROFESSORS WHO ARE EXPERTS IN THEIR FIELDS Two of HPU’s powerhouse academic programs united to build this graduate degree: the Earl N. Phillips School of Business and the Nido R. Qubein School of Communication. The Princeton Review ranks both of these HPU programs among the best in the nation for their respective majors. By learning from the powerful combination of faculty in these academic schools, you’ll gain industry insight and career connections you wouldn’t find elsewhere.

7. ENJOY A BONUS YEAR ON A NATIONALLY RANKED CAMPUS College is such a special yet short time in a young person’s life. Often, college students find themselves wishing they had more time to learn, connect and enjoy their campus environment. With HPU’s tuition-free master’s degree, you have a hyper-productive fifth year to learn and live at a university ranked No. 1 for Most Innovative and No. 1 in Best Dorms, as well as ranking in the nation’s Top 20 for Most Beautiful Campus and Best Career Services. Your fifth-year master’s degree will not only help establish you as a life skills leader, you’ll also gain extra time to soak in your college experience.

By combining into one graduate degree a host of life skills necessary to be successful in any field, you’ll see more doors open throughout your career. You’ll be prepared to exceed the expectations of any one job description and easily find opportunities for growth.

According to “The Economic Value of College Majors,” a 2015 study by Georgetown University, college graduates with a bachelor’s degree earn an average annual salary of $61,000 over the course of their careers, while those with graduate degrees earn $78,000 annually on average.

3

Inside Higher Education reported that a Strada Education Survey shows those with a graduate degree fared better in the job market than other degree holders during the height of the global pandemic.

campus as a

COACH

THINK ENVIRONMENT DOESN’T MAKE A DIFFERENCE? Ask any professional sports coach if they prefer to play at home or away. HPU understands that your surroundings shape your behavior. People rise to the level of the environment in which they live. Whether students are in class, a residence hall or one of the library learning common spaces throughout campus, students are continuously surrounded by excellence. HPU’s entire campus is a holistic learning environment that complements classroom learning and prepares students to thrive. Here’s a glimpse:

World-class facilities The lobby of the Wilson School of Commerce resembles that of a typical Fortune 500 company. So when students land their job interview, they’ll feel at home in that environment. The Tilley Trading Room features a live stock ticker and Bloomberg trading software. Executive boardrooms allow students to present themselves in a corporate setting. The Human Biomechanics and Physiology Lab is one of the most unique labs in the country. With the addition of our brand new Culp Planetarium and Caine Conservatory, students can gain hands-on experience programming and presenting STEM lessons or conducting botanical research. Also, TV studios equipped with state-of-the-art technology prepare graduates for competitive newsrooms. These facilities are among the many reasons U.S. News and World Report ranks HPU the Most Innovative College in the South.

Lessons in leadership HPU buzzes with the news of industry leaders visiting campus throughout the year. Something beautiful happens when students meet and learn from these accomplished leaders: they discover the art of the possible. The simple lesson learned: “I can do it.” Students have learned from change agents such as Netflix Co-founder Marc Randolph, HPU’s Entrepreneur in Residence; Apple Co-founder Steve Wozniak, HPU’s Innovator in Residence; Dallas Mavericks CEO, Cynthia “Cynt” Marshall, HPU’s Sports Executive In Residence; Condoleezza Rice, 66th U.S. Secretary of State; Josh Groban, internationally acclaimed singer, songwriter and actor; Wolf Blitzer, CNN lead political anchor and anchor of “The Situation Room”; Gen. Colin Powell, former U.S. Secretary of State, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and national security advisor; NASA astronaut Dr. Buzz Aldrin; and many others. 28

Inspiring Environment

Engaging events foster connection The HPU campus thrives on connection. There’s the Activities Fair, during which students get connected with clubs and causes that interest them. There are Greek organizations, which present leadership and service opportunities. There are guest lectures, concerts, theater performances, art exhibits and more to expose the HPU family and the community to the arts. There are 16 Division I athletic events to attend, dozens of intramural teams on which to participate and 30 club sports in which to engage. These opportunities exist to teach students to thrive in collaborative environments, to build relationships and connect the dots wherever they go.

A 500+ acre “classroom” Flags from more than 52 nations fly along the Gene and Jane Kester International Promenade to honor each international student’s home country. Along its brick pathways, quotations selected by faculty provide ideas for reflection. Sculptures of significant historical figures inspire students to pursue their goals. The Mariana H. Qubein Arboretum and Botanical Gardens bring holistic learning to life throughout campus. These elements were intentionally placed on campus to present learning opportunities at every turn. For example, Assistant Professor of Political Science Dr. Martin Kifer takes students on a guided walk around the Promenade, stopping at the sculptures of civil rights leaders. It prompts students to have an intellectual, out-of-classroom discussion about how these leaders changed the course of history.

1924 PRIME AND ALO: TWO OF THE NATION’S MOST UNIQUE LEARNING LABS

ACCORDING TO A STORY IN THE NEW YORK TIMES TITLED “HOW TO HIRE THE RIGHT PERSON,” employers say that taking a candidate to lunch or dinner is one of the most revealing and important parts of the hiring process. So imagine you just graduated and a prospective employer offers you an interview over lunch or dinner. What do you do if your university didn’t prepare you? While some universities provide an etiquette class during a student’s senior year, HPU provides students with four years of career preparation inside two different fine-dining restaurants. 1924 PRIME, HPU’s flagship restaurant, and Alo, HPU’s newest boutique hotel restaurant, provide the perfect atmosphere for students to engage in a unique type of learning laboratory. At 1924 PRIME, students practice their interview skills in a setting where they can develop confidence while at the same time gaining familiarity with international cuisine and culture. Similarly at Alo, students practice interviewing, focus on continental dining style, and learn to be comfortable with European dining etiquette and protocol. Once a week dining at either restaurant is included in the HPU dining plan. When HPU graduates enter the workforce, they not only know how to ace the interview, but they’re also comfortable and confident in various business settings. This prepares them for a lifetime of success. Just picture it: after you accept the job offer, your boss asks you to take an international client to dinner. Or you’re meeting colleagues after work to offer a major proposal. Whatever the scenario, you’re ready. www.highpoint.edu

There are so many great things about living in Blessing Hall. It is great to live in a suite where you live closely with your suitemates but also have the ability to go into your own room, where you are able to do homework and have time to yourself. You have a kitchen as well as your own common room. What more could you ask for? One of my favorite things about Blessing is it is easy to study and take charge of your academics at hand. You don’t have to go to the library to get your work done since you have your own room. You have a good and quiet learning place. —Danny McGrew, Atlanta, Georgia

Items that will make me feel most ‘at home’ in college:

§ A terrific roommate that shares similar values § A private room with my own bathroom § Access to good study spaces § Close to my favorite food venue(s) or to a Starbucks! § A comfortable double bed - not a bunk bed! § Large closet spaces § Relaxing spaces to hang out with friends Bonus Opportunity: View all of the first-year housing options in 360 VR at www.highpoint.edu/residencelife

THE CHAPEL AND RELIGIOUS LIFE OFFICE IS A PLACE OF INCLUSION. With students representing all 50 states, 37 countries and an array of faiths and backgrounds, HPU is dedicated to fostering the religious life of students from all backgrounds. The Chapel and Religious Life Office provides year-round programming. Catholic students have Mass where they can worship. Jewish students have a vibrant Hillel. And each year, students of all backgrounds come together for an interfaith Iftar — a meal celebrated by Muslims during Ramadan.

Interfaith Engagement In keeping with its Christian heritage, High Point University practices radical hospitality to people of all faiths and takes great pride in raising the bar for positive multifaith and interfaith collaboration and service. HPU was recently named the interfaith university Rookie of the Year by the Interfaith Youth Core, one of America’s leading interfaith engagement and service organizations. This recognition comes in response to student-led efforts to promote collaboration, service, understanding and appreciation for difference among religious and spiritual organizations on campus. A group of HPU students took part in a fall pilgrimage to Asheville, North Carolina. The group volunteered their time at Haywood Street’s Downtown Welcome Table where they served hot meals to the homeless.

And while diverse programming aids in the goal of touching as many lives as possible, a dedication to community serves as another means of fostering religious life at HPU.

CARING

people

PROVIDING AN EXTRAORDINARY EDUCATION IS AT THE HEART OF HIGH POINT UNIVERSITY’S MISSION, but the soul of the university lives and breathes within its people. It begins with faculty and staff who take time to teach and engage with students each day. It continues through the student support roles of Success Coaches, a full-time campus doctor and the Campus Enhancement staff that not only maintain the grounds and facilities to the highest degree but also take time to stop and greet guests as they pass by. At HPU, students are supported by individuals who serve as heroes, models and mentors inside and outside the classroom. While students perform research and achieve academic milestones, they also learn to live a life based on values that enable them to become responsible citizens. By building a culture of caring people, HPU has developed a campus-wide ecosystem of support.

HEROES, MODELS & MENTORS

Just before graduating from HPU, Jacob Lancaster, ‘20, right, landed a full scholarship to Duke University’s School of Divinity thanks to guidance from professors like Dr. Chris Franks, chair of the Department of Religion and Philosophy.

HPU provides impactful mentors to guide students throughout their college journey and more importantly, throughout their lives. Students don’t merely enroll at HPU, they join the HPU family. It’s the conversation over a cup of coffee, the encouraging email from a Silicon Valley veteran or a congratulatory high-five from a professor on graduation day. Mentorship takes many forms. It happens everywhere on High Point University’s campus. Here are just a few examples:

Mikaela Campbell, ‘18, left, launched her career at the NBA with support from Dr. Jenny Lukow, chair of sport management.

Throughout his journey to graduate school, Zack Hutchens, ‘18, received support from professors like Dr. Aaron Titus, right, chair of the Department of Physics.

This scholarship was a confirmation of my journey and how well HPU prepared me. Professor Franks takes what he teaches in the classroom and shows students how to apply that to their future.

What constantly set me apart from a field of qualified candidates was the real-world experience I received at HPU and the attitude they instilled within me to never be afraid of a challenge. Dr. Lukow never failed to keep me motivated, and I cannot thank her enough for that. Every aspect of this university prepares students to go against the best of the best in the workforce.

The combination of learning from faculty who care, serving as Dr. Titus’s student instructor, conducting research and presenting at professional conferences prepared me to lead my own lab. Without the type of mentorship I received from HPU, I can’t imagine what college would have been like.

Anne Drew Allen, ‘19, left, turned her internship into a full-time job offer with Dimensional Fund Advisors in Austin, Texas, thanks to guidance from professors like Larry Quinn, chair of sales and marketing.

Halle Jacobs, ‘20, exercise science major, appreciates the guidance and support received from professors like Dr. Dan Tarara, left, throughout her internship and research journey. Jacobs is now a senior account executive at Soliant.

Hannah Le, ‘20, landed multiple internships in the visual merchandising field thanks to professors like Victoria Brown, left, who has extensive experience in the industry. Today, Le is a design associate at Hoffer Furniture.

HPU instilled in me so much more than I ever expected, and it starts in the classroom with professors who care about your success. It spreads into how you handle yourself in meetings, perform in job interviews and how you carry yourself as a professional. It is allencompassing.

Dr. Tarara believed in me right from the start. He was caring but held me accountable. I needed a mentor like him to help me choose the right degree path. He has taught me as much about life as he has about exercise science. It’s an incredible feeling knowing that you have mentors who have your back and truly care.

I love that Professor Brown, like all HPU faculty members, has only a small group of advisees. And I appreciate that she specializes in my interest. She has really taken the time to get to know and care about me.

VALUES-based EDUCATION

YOU’LL FIRST NOTICE IT WHEN YOU DRIVE ONTO CAMPUS. A security officer smiling to greet you. A professor stooping down to pick up a stray piece of trash along the Kester International Promenade. The President of HPU waving as you walk to class. A student holding the door for you. Those gestures happen every day on the campus of High Point University. While seemingly insignificant, they make a big impact. High Point University is a values-based institution. As HPU President Nido Qubein often reminds faculty and staff, “You can’t teach values. Instead, we must model a values-based approach to life. Students watch, they listen and they learn.” Faculty and staff model the values of service, joy, generosity, gratitude and respect because they know that students are paying attention to the actions of those around them. When students are surrounded by people who have a positive attitude, they begin to understand that nothing is impossible for the individual who is willing to work hard enough and smart enough. And when students graduate and pursue professional careers, they go on to lead lives of success and significance.

YOUR FAMILY

MISS VERNELL IS ONE EXAMPLE OF HPU’S CARING PEOPLE.

MOM AND DAD WILL NOT ALWAYS BE THERE IN COLLEGE TO GIVE YOU A HUG WHEN YOU NEED IT, BUT MISS VERNELL WILL. She’s the rock star of the Slane Student Center. She works to keep the food court, Starbucks, study spaces and student recreation center clean. But her bigger job is to encourage students every day. She knows students by name, their class schedules, what internships they’re applying for and when they need some words of encouragement. Vernell is one of many committed staff and faculty members who reflect an intentional campus culture that supports you at every turn.

I get so involved with the students. I cry with them, I pray with them … I can tell when they’re stressed or having good and bad days. They’ll come up to me and say, ‘Oh, Miss Vernell, I’ve been up studying all night for an exam. I don’t think I can do this.’ I tell them, ‘It’s going to be OK. You can do it.’

SAFE home

Why Students Love HPU’s Campus Safety Team Learning is best achieved in an environment where students and faculty can thrive. That’s why safety is a top priority. It’s also why HPU has an expert team of student life, security and transportation professionals — a team dedicated to providing students an inspiring, secure learning environment. The HPU campus is also equipped with state-of-the-art technology to assist with that mission. Here are a few reasons why HPU students love their campus safety team:

Trained Security Officers — HPU’s trained team of officers and

dispatchers welcome all guests to campus 24/7. The men and women of the HPU security team collectively bring more than 300 years of police, military and fire/ EMS experience to the university.

Shuttles — The Transportation Department provides students with a convenient, safe and secure method of transportation. Campus shuttles take students to their classes and residence halls, while others take students to local retail establishments and regional airports. Safe Access — A key card is required for access to all academic buildings and dorms. Residence hall card-access is given to students who live in the halls. 24/7 Student Life Presence — Student Life staff are on call 24 hours

HEY MOM AND DAD! You’ve spent 18 years caring and keeping watch over your student. When the time comes for them to move into their HPU residence hall that caring won’t stop. HPU’s security team is ranked No. 16 in the nation, so you can rest easy knowing your student is safe and secure.

a day to assist with students’ needs.

Cashless Campus — The Passport Card is the only form of payment accepted on campus. It frees students from having to carry cash and also allows family members to easily deposit funds into their student’s campus account. PantherALERT — Students are automatically enrolled in PantherALERT, HPU’s emergency mass-notification program. Should an emergency situation arise, advisories are sent to the HPU family via text message, email, voice message, campus phones, campus computers, social media, the HPU website and an outdoor PA system.

CARVED ON THE SIDE OF HPU’S KESTER INTERNATIONAL PROMENADE, is this quote from Winston Churchill: “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” HPU is proud to recognize our great nation and celebrate the freedoms we enjoy as citizens of the United States. Here’s a glimpse of the ways HPU celebrates faith, family and country. 52

STARS AND STRIPES EVERYWHERE Dozens of American flags, along with an array of other national symbols, are displayed all around campus to represent patriotism, reverence, honor and pride. Whenever President Qubein speaks on campus, American flags always accompany him on the speaker’s platform.

The HPU family proudly shouts it from the mountaintop: High Point University is a God, family and country school. HPU celebrates the fundamentals that make this country great, including personal initiative, free enterprise, patriotism and more.

FOSTERING FAITH Faith is a cornerstone of HPU’s values-based education. The university was founded by the United Methodist Church in 1924 and honors its Methodist heritage. It also welcomes every student regardless of faith or viewpoint. Civility, personal responsibility and individual expression are respected and celebrated.

ENCOURAGING CIVIC ENGAGEMENT HONORING VETERANS HPU respects those who selflessly serve and sacrifice to protect our home and freedom. That’s why HPU hosts renowned veterans to share their stories with students. Each Veterans Day, HPU welcomes more than 1,200 veterans and their families to a complimentary breakfast and patriotic program.

At HPU, students learn what it takes to build a thriving democracy. Through the HPU Poll, students as a public service survey residents of North Carolina and beyond on crucial public affairs issues and report the results. Debate viewing parties on campus give students a chance to watch political history unfold before their eyes. Many students choose to intern and volunteer with local, state and national political parties for “get out the vote” efforts, while others help host voter registration drives and provide transportation to polling sites.

HPU is a God, family and country school, and my family holds those values dear. We believe in the objectives and the vision of the university. I’m incredibly proud of my family’s relationship with HPU, where both my children were educated. — Todd Wanek, HPU parent and president and CEO of Ashley Furniture Industries, Inc.

As an undeclared student, you will partner with a Success Coach who is passionate about helping you discover a major that is a great fit for you, while helping you make positive connections with organizations on campus in which you have interest. This happens as early as the December before you enroll for early decision students, or the March before for regular admitted students. You will have support and guidance from a caring Coach who understands the various options available to you.

You aren’t the only student who entered college as undeclared — in fact, it is common across the entire nation! Sometimes we learn best from someone like us — a peer. First-Year Navigators are HPU students selected by the Office of Student Success to mentor first-year students. As an undeclared student, you will be connected with First-Year Navigators who were once undeclared, too. They know exactly what you are going through and will help you explore your options.

Casual in nature, these interactions allow you to connect with faculty, learn more about various programs and identify best-fit majors! You can attend as many of these meetings as you want, and you are always invited to have one-on-one visits with a professor to discuss opportunities within a major.

Our daughter was planning to apply to four schools, but she told us if HPU accepted her, hands down she would go there. That’s when we decided for her to apply Early Decision so she would know the outcome prior to other application deadlines. She received her acceptance notice the day after Thanksgiving. We were all so excited for her. We saw the relief on her face. The decision was made; she would be able to attend her first choice and not have to stress anymore. —Liz R., Branchburg, New Jersey

Early Decision Quiz Early Decision eliminated the stress of the college selection process. We enjoyed becoming part of the HPU community much sooner. Our son had the opportunity to learn more about his new home before moving in. He had time to explore programs, to meet other classmates through the HPU social media groups and was prepared and enthusiastic about his decision upon arrival in August. —Danielle and Bill F., Mansfield, Massachusetts

What a pleasure to know in late November where my son was headed. The early access to his Success Coach, the March orientation, first priority to his housing and priority class selection were well timed and helpful. Moving in a day early was HUGE! The reduced anxiety, the ease of move in and the added time to settle in was so terrific. HPU goes above and beyond for their Early Decision candidates. We had better holidays knowing our son would attend HPU. I’m glad he made his decision and avoided the stress of worrying about where he would go to college. It provided a lot of calmness and relief. We appreciate the pristine campus, the dynamic program he’s in, the small class sizes and the constant expansion. We know HPU is a place that’s always growing. —Glenn M., Attleboro, Massachusetts
