DR. JEFFREY PALIS, ASSISTANT VICE PRESIDENT FOR GLOBAL EDUCATION Cottrell Hall 146 | (336) 841-9636 | jpalis@highpoint.edu Dr. Palis oversees High Point University’s study abroad and exchange programs and international student programs and services. Dr. Palis serves as the Principal Designated School Official, serving as the main point of contact with the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) to oversee matters related to immigration and student visas. Dr. Palis also collaborates with academic units on the HPU campus to host visiting scholars, international speakers and artists to achieve the dual goals of bringing High Point University students and faculty to the world and welcoming the world to the High Point campus. A native of Winston-Salem, Dr. Palis got his start in international education as a study abroad and exchange coordinator in the university system of Georgia, working his way up to comprehensive international director in Georgia before moving on to become the founding Director of Global Studies and Study Abroad at Lamar University in Texas. Dr. Palis earned a Fulbright Grant to conduct his dissertation research in Riga, Latvia, and has work and travel experience in more than 65 countries.
KRISTEN CRUZ, SENIOR COORDINATOR FOR INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS AND SERVICES Cottrell Hall 144 | (336) 841-9471 | kcruz@highpoint.edu Ms. Cruz serves as the main point of contact for international students at High Point University through ongoing immigration and visa advising as a Designated School Official (DSO). She ensures institutional and student compliance with federal immigration-related regulations, interprets and creates policies, and designs programs to help acclimate HPU’s international students to life in the U.S. and on campus. Ms. Cruz is on the Executive Board of the North Carolina Association of International Educators (NCAIE) and is an active member of NAFSA: Association of International Educators. A proud Buckeye from Toledo, Ohio, she is a two-time graduate of Bowling Green State University, where she holds a master’s degree in cross-cultural and international education, a certification in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), and dual bachelor’s degrees in Africana studies and history. Prior to joining HPU, she worked in international student programming at Purdue University Northwest and served in the Peace Corps in Namibia.
CHRIS FERGUSON, SENIOR ADVISOR FOR STUDY ABROAD PROGRAMS Cottrell Hall 144 | (336) 841-9051 | cferguso@highpoint.edu Mr. Ferguson works closely with High Point University students, helping them find and prepare for relevant academic experiences abroad and process their experiences to develop their intercultural competencies and skill set. Ferguson also serves as a Designated School Official and assists international students with immigration matters, creating and updating immigration and school records, and advising on immigration policy. In addition to his advising responsibilities, he works closely with HPU’s bilateral exchanges and facilitates the transfer of study abroad credits. A graduate of HPU, Ferguson discovered a passion for teaching which eventually led him to move to China to work with college students and pursue Chinese language study. He has academic and work experience in China and Thailand and travel experience in Asia and Europe. In addition to his passion for education, Ferguson is a chef and history buff. He enjoys exploring cultures through their cuisine and by connecting their history with their present ways of life.

NATIONAL RECOGNITION High Point University president Dr. Nido Qubein’s inspiring life story is one filled with adversity and abundance. It is through the lens of his life accomplishments that one appreciates his current role as an educator, philanthropist and passionate advocate for the development of our future leaders. Not many university presidents teach a class, but Dr. Qubein always proves the exception to the rule and, in fact, teaches two classes. At the age of 17, he came to the U.S. with little money and a limited command of the English language. His achievements have earned him the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, induction into the Horatio Alger Society of Distinguished Americans and placement within the National Speaker’s Association Hall of Fame. Dr. Qubein is a nationally recognized speaker, author and consultant. PRESIDENT’S SEMINAR ON LIFE SKILLS The President’s Seminar on Life Skills is a required course for every freshman in which students reap the benefits of Dr. Qubein’s lifetime of learning and achievement. Through this class, students learn about a variety of ‘life’ topics that include: how to develop positive self-esteem, the art of goal-setting, the fundamentals of leadership and much more! Called Life Skills, this course gives students a hefty dose of real-world pragmatism as they enter HPU. The skills they learn are meant to help them succeed in all aspects of life—academic, professional and personal. By taking the course as freshmen, the rest of their course work is experienced through the lens of practical application. ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE
HPU offers advanced-level English as a Second Language (ESL) courses that earn college credit. These courses provide additional support to English Language Learners whose proficiency is still developing upon matriculation at HPU. All non-native speakers of English applying to the university must submit a TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo, MET or iTEP score. Non-native English speakers may also demonstrate the minimum English language proficiency required for admission if they attended for two consecutive years, and graduated from, an accredited USA-based high school or if they obtained an official score of 4 or higher on either the IB Higher Level Language examination in English or the AP Program examination in English Language. Students who are academically qualified, but do not meet the minimum requirements for English proficiency, may be conditionally accepted to HPU. In order to gain Conditional Acceptance (CA), student must attend a certified and qualified English Language School. After successfully completing and receiving certification that they have reached the equivalent of the English language tests scores required by HPU, they will be fully admitted to the university. Upon admission to High Point University, all non-native English speakers are required to take an ESL placement exam. The results of this exam will determine whether the student will be required to take 0-16 hours of creditbearing ESL classes during the first two semesters at High Point University. Any required ESL classes will fulfill the Foreign Language portion of the General Education (Core) Requirements. All students have access to support services such as ESL tutoring free of charge.

SAFETY & SECURITY High Point University is unlike most American universities in that it features gated entrances, secured perimeters and key card access to all academic buildings and dorms. It is a campus that is designed to provide both comfort and security. HEALTH SERVICES HPU Student Health Services by Novant Health operates like a full-fledged primary care office. The Novant team of physician assistants, nurses and other medical professionals offer medical examinations, treatment of illnesses and injuries, referrals to specialists, immunizations and flu shots, laboratory testing, 24-hour nurse phone support, same-day appointments and more. MAKING HPU HOME High Point University is designed to be a residential campus. Ninety-nine percent of all first-year students and 95% of all upperclassmen live on campus until they reach senior status. This promotes a rich and engaging campus life and also allows international students to hone their English language skills while truly experiencing what living on a college campus has to offer. Roommate selection is based on results from a housing survey about individual living preferences. This is especially important for international students, as your roommate will likely be the person you practice your English with the most.

GLOBAL STUDENT ASSOCIATION HPU’s Global Student Association is one of many vibrant organizations on campus that welcomes international students. The goal of the Global Student Association is to promote diversity and add multicultural awareness within the HPU community. The organization focuses on creating a welcoming global environment for all students while embracing cultural differences and providing programming that focuses on international themes. Leaders from the organization collaborate with the Office of Global Education on HPU’s annual International Festival and International Education Week celebrations, which serve as excellent opportunities for international students to share their culture and heritage with other HPU students. Members are also involved in welcoming and mentoring new international students when they arrive to campus to begin their studies at HPU.

CAMPUS RESOURCES Cottrell Hall is home to the Flanagan Center for Student Success. This 43,000-square-foot facility was funded entirely by parents and serves as a hub of professional development for students. It houses the Office of Career and Professional Development, Global Education, Undergraduate Research and Creative Works, a Sales and Entrepreneurship Center, a Creative Commons that reflects today’s collaborative workforce and more. A globe in front of the facility and international themes throughout the building reflect the 21st century global marketplace.
