MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN DR. MICHAEL OUDSHOORN is the founding dean of the Webb School of Engineering and professor of computer science. He graduated from the University of Adelaide, Australia, with a B.S. in 1983 and received his Ph.D. in computer science in 1992, also from the University of Adelaide. From 1984 to 2003 he was a faculty member in computer science at the University of Adelaide and served as the Associate Dean (International) for the College of Engineering, Mathematical and Computer Sciences. In 2003 he relocated to the U.S. where he served as a faculty member, department chair or dean at several universities before joining High Point University in July 2018. Dr. Oudshoorn’s primary research interests are in computer science education, distributed systems and autonomic systems. He serves on a number of editorial boards and is a regular reviewer for journals and conferences. Dr. Oudshoorn is a member of the ASEE, IEEE and a senior member of the ACM. He is also an active member of ABET, the accreditation body for Engineering and Computing Programs within the U.S. and internationally. He is a commissioner on the Computing Accreditation Commission and currently serves as a member of the executive committee. SCHOOL LEADERSHIP Dr. William Suchan Founding Chair, Department Of Computer Science Associate Professor Dr. Suchan earned his undergraduate degree from the United States Military Academy at West Point and spent three decades as a commissioned Army officer. During that time he earned both a master’s and Ph.D. in computer science from Arizona State University, focusing on Information Security. His stint in the Army included tours in the Middle East and Far East, as well as 13 years on the faculty at West Point, culminating as an Academy Professor. He served for several years as Program Director for the Core Information Technology program. Dr. Suchan came to High Point University in 2013 and in 2019 was selected as the founding chair of the Department of Computer Science. Currently he teaches courses in web development, programming, database systems and software engineering. His expertise is in information assurance, and he has published numerous papers on digital privacy, security and IT education. Dr. Claire McCullough, P.E. Founding Chair, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Professor Dr. McCullough received her bachelor’s, master’s and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Vanderbilt, Georgia Institute of Technology and the University of Tennessee, respectively, and is a registered professional engineer in the state of Alabama. Dr. McCullough has over 30 years’ experience in engineering practice and education, including industrial experience at the Tennessee Valley Authority and the US Army Space and Missile Defense Command, and 20 years as a professor at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. She is an ABET program evaluator for Electrical and Computer Engineering programs and is a former member of the Engineering Accreditation Commission. Research interests include Engineering Ethics, Data Fusion, Target Recognition, Bioinformatics and Diversity and Inclusion in STEM fields.

Dr. Dandrielle Lewis Chair, Department of Mathematical Sciences Associate Professor Dr. Lewis received her B.S. from Winston-Salem State University in 2001, her M.S. from the University of Iowa in 2006 and her Ph.D. From SUNY Binghamton in 2011. She was previously an Associate Professor of Mathematics and the Director of the Liberal Studies Program at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, where she served for eight years before joining HPU in 2019. Dr. Lewis has research interests in Finite Group Theory, Diversity and Inclusion for Women in STEM, and Interdisciplinary research, and she has publications in each of those areas. She has received local and national awards for educational, teaching and leadership excellence. Currently, she is a fellow for the Transforming Post-Secondary Education in Mathematics Leadership Institute, on the Editorial Board for the MAA FOCUS, where she authors the “Focus on Diversity” column, and she also serves on advisory boards and committees in the mathematical community.

COMPUTER SCIENCE Program overview The primary goal of the computer science major is to develop the aptitudes and analytical skills required for the use and understanding of computer science. The curriculum is designed to allow exceptional students to excel in their area of interest. The professors strive to guide the students in discovery and learning of new ideas, rather than just presenting carefully structured theories. Applications are used throughout to illustrate and create new material. Most topics are developed by means of interplay between applications, problem-solving and theory. CYBERSECURITY Program overview The primary goal of the cybersecurity major is to develop the knowledge, skills and abilities required in the cybersecurity workforce. The curriculum is designed to allow exceptional students to excel in their area of interest. The professors strive to guide the students in discovery and learning of new ideas, rather than just presenting carefully structured theories. WHY SHOULD I MAJOR IN CYBERSECURITY AT HPU? • As technology expands throughout daily life, so do threats and vulnerabilities. Knowledge of cybersecurity becomes more critical every day. • HPU’s cybersecurity degree teaches students how to discover and investigate attacks, data breaches, malware infections and software vulnerabilities. Students learn how to build firewalls, encrypt data transmissions and design access controls. Further, you will explore secure software and systems. DATA SCIENCE Program overview The goal of the data science major is to prepare students to combine domain expertise, programming skills, machine learning techniques and knowledge of mathematics and statistics to extract meaningful insights from data. WHAT IS A DATA SCIENTIST? A data scientist uses computing skills for collecting, shaping, storing, managing and analyzing data to allow for data-driven decision-making. Data scientists are in huge demand as they benefit both companies and consumers. Almost every interaction with technology includes data—your online purchases, social media feed, streaming recommendations and even the facial recognition required to sign in to your phone. COMPUTER ENGINEERING Program overview A Bachelor of Science in computer engineering prepares individuals to apply mathematical and scientific principles to the design, development and operational evaluation of computer hardware, embedded systems, software systems and related equipment and facilities; and the analysis of specific problems of computer applications to various tasks. A computer engineering graduate is able to design and implement a computer system for general purpose or embedded computing. Students learn to incorporate best practices and state-of-the-art solutions into a variety of computing problems in an ethical and socially-responsible manner. This includes systems which have both hardware and software components, whose design requires a well-defined interface between the two, and the evaluation of the associated trade-offs. Graduates will have strong communication skills and are capable of communicating with a range of audiences, as well the ability to work as a productive member of an interdisciplinary team.

ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING Program overview A Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering is a professional degree program that prepares students for careers in electrical engineering. The degree provides students with the necessary technical managerial, science and mathematical skills to enter the workforce in the design application, installation, manufacturing, operation and maintenance of electrical systems. Students gain hands-on experience throughout the program and learn the foundational electronics, mathematics, physics, chemistry, control systems and computing necessary to solve real-world problems in an ethical and socially responsible manner. ACTUARIAL SCIENCE Program overview The actuarial science major at High Point University was specifically designed in consultation with local actuaries to give students the best possible preparation for an actuarial career. Courses in finance, economics and statistics have been accepted by the Society of Actuaries as satisfying its VEE requirements in corporate finance, micro- and macroeconomics and applied statistics. The goal of the program is to produce graduates who have passed the first two actuarial exams (probability and financial mathematics), completed the Society of Actuaries VEE requirements and have developed through their coursework the skills to succeed in the actuarial profession. Through classroom studies and internships, students are equipped with the skills necessary for the ever-changing global marketplace.

• The actuarial profession is perfect for individuals who enjoy challenges and problem-solving. Those who develop a track record of success will have many opportunities for growth and advancement. • The need for actuaries is growing beyond the traditional industry to include financial services, marketing and sales among many more.

DATA ANALYTICS AND STATISTICS Program overview The ability to collaborate in order to help others find answers to their questions lies at the heart of data analytics. Data analytics informs fact-based decision-making by combining advancements in technology, mathematical and statistical reasoning, and machine learning methodologies to identify patterns and make predictions using large existing data sets. An effective data analyst not only has the ability to discover structure within the data but also excels at communicating ideas and results to audiences with varying levels of technical knowledge. At HPU, our analytics students take courses in statistics, mathematics and computer programming. The data analysis skills honed in our program will be applicable to any industry.

The World Economic Forum released a study in 2020, stating that Data Analysts and Scientists are the No. 1 job role in increasing demand.

WHY SHOULD I MAJOR IN DATA ANALYTICS AND STATISTICS AT HPU? • In our program, students begin by building a solid foundation in mathematics and basic statistics. As they progress through the statistics courses, they learn to apply statistical models to detect patterns in large data sets and draw inferences accordingly. • Student take courses in both R and SAS programming, both of which are industry standards in statistics and data analysis. • Our program culminates with a data analytics capstone sequence, in which students apply what they have learned to a data analysis project over two semesters. • Students receive one-on-one mentorship from expert faculty.

MATHEMATICAL ECONOMICS Program overview Economics is no longer as simple as “supply and demand.” Economics is becoming an increasingly technical field that now makes use of almost every area of mathematics. A solid background in mathematics will give those wishing to excel in economics-related professions a distinct advantage over the competition. The Department of Mathematical Sciences at HPU offers a B.S. in mathematical economics for students wishing to study the deep interplay between mathematics and economic theory. Techniques mastered in mathematics and statistics courses provide the tools necessary to gain a rich understanding of economic models and the confidence to apply mathematics to real-world applications.

WHY SHOULD I MAJOR IN MATHEMATICAL ECONOMICS? • For the B.S. in mathematical economics, students take courses in mathematics, economics and statistics. They engage with faculty with expertise in each of these disciplines. • Students gain a deeper understanding of economics by learning the mathematical and statistical techniques used in economic analysis. • Many mathematical economics majors choose to engage in undergraduate research during their senior year. They work together with faculty in mathematics, statistics or economics to provide an analysis of an economic topic of their choosing. • Our robust set of courses in mathematics and statistics differentiates graduates as they enter into the corporate world. Employers know students are well versed in abstract thinking and problem-solving at a high level.

MATHEMATICS Program overview Jobs within the mathematical sciences consistently rank among those with highest job satisfaction ratings. In 2018, CareerCast ranked the best and worst jobs in America according to five factors: environment, income, employment outlook, physical demands and stress. Of the top 10 jobs listed, six require significant mathematical training. The top spot went to actuaries.

Graduates that hold math degrees are in high demand by a wide variety of employers. Why? Studying mathematics develops just the skills these employers are looking for. These include abstract thinking, problem-solving, analyzing data, rigorous and logical thought and creating and analyzing mathematical models. Employers know that someone who holds a math degree has learned something far more valuable than a series of facts: They have learned how to think. WHY SHOULD I MAJOR IN MATHEMATICS AT HPU? • HPU’s Department of Mathematical Sciences offers both a B.A. and a B.S. in mathematics as well as related degrees in mathematical economics, actuarial science and data analytics and statistics. In mathematics, the B.A. offers more flexibility for students wishing to double major in another field. The B.S. provides a solid foundation for success as a mathematician and as preparation for graduate school. • Careers in mathematics consistently outrank finance, engineering, law and medicine in job satisfaction ratings. • Mathematics majors tend to have the highest graduate admissions test scores on exams, such as the LSAT and the GMAT.

RECENT GRADUATES Ashlyn Hanks, Class of 2022 Major: Computer science with a minor in business administration Internship: Digital Cloak LLC. Ashlyn worked on three different project teams and was tasked with scanning networks to find vulnerabilities, proposing patches for weaknesses within networks, analyzing and collecting data, and using different open source intelligence tools. How HPU helped you get there: “HPU granted me so many opportunities. I was able to have hands-on experiences through classrooms, clubs and undergraduate research. My teachers and advisors served as a strong support system that go above and beyond. I attended multiple workshops in the Office of Career and Professional Development. They helped me to perfect my elevator pitch, be confident in interviews and know what I value in an employer.”

Megan Mouton, Class of 2020 Major: Mathematics and physics with a minor in computer science How HPU helped you get there: “HPU and all the incredible professors I had along the way really shaped my future. Dr. Titus, Dr. Lancaster and Dr. Fuselier are just a few of the mentors that positively impacted my time here. They were always available when I had questions or needed help, whether that be for homework or for life advice. I would not be where I am today without all of the incredible professors that pushed me to be the best, most extraordinary version of myself.”

Ryan Diaz, Class of 2020 Major: Computer science with a minor in mathematics Ryan has secured a position with Liberty Mutual Insurance in their TechStart Program in Boston, Massachusetts. The program includes software development training and placement in positions throughout the company. How HPU helped you get there: “The growth mindset and opportunities provided by HPU have grown my skillset within my field as well as within other disciplines. I had the opportunity to work with Steve Wozniak on creating a self-driving golf cart as well as join the nation’s largest co-ed service fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega, to provide thousands of hours of service to the local community. I also used the Office of Career and Professional Development to edit my resume. They were able to help me reformat it and add professional details that led to my internships and a full-time job.”
