HIGH POINT 2013 Men’s Soccer

UNIVERSITY Prospectus & Record Book

Season Preview

The High Point University men’s soccer team will feature a great deal of new faces in 2013. The Panthers return just 10 letter winners and five starters from a team which won 12 games last season, but head coach Dustin Fonder still feels the team has the talent to challenge for a Big South crown. “Having so many new players this season presents us with a unique challenge because in a way we have to go back to the basic building blocks and start from scratch,” head coach Dustin Fonder said. “At the same time it is exciting because we have seen a youthful enthusiasm and an eagerness to learn and compete. I think that eagerness will really help us as this season progresses.” HPU went 12-5-3 in 2012 and earned its first-ever NSCAA National Ranking on Oct. 2nd when it debuted at No. 23. The Panthers went undefeated in their first 11 games of the season, opening the campaign with a 10-0-1 record. Forward Mamadee Nyepon finished among the top scorers in the Big South with 29 points on 13 goals and three assists and was named a first-team All-Conference member. Goalkeeper Kody Palmer was named Big South Freshman of the Year after starting every game in 2012. Palmer finished with a 0.92 goalsagainst average and tied an HPU Div. 1 singleseason record with nine shutouts. Nyepon and Palmer are two of the five returning starters for High Point along with second-team All-Conference midfielder Adam Sewell and sophomore defenders Austin Yearwood and Erien Campbell. They have been joined by a talented recruiting class that was ranked 24th in the nation by College Soccer News. Two of HPU’s incoming freshmen, Tony Murillo and Dolu Oyewole, are listed among the top 100 recruits in the country by College Soccer News. Redshirt-junior Sonny Mukungu also joined the team as a transfer from NC State where he was named a member of the ACC AllFreshman Team in 2010. “I think the team is coming together really well,” Fonder said. “The attitudes of all the players have been really good. We are still setting the bar high here at High Point. Our main goals are still to compete for a Big South Regular Season Championship and a Big South Tournament Championship so we can earn that elusive bid to the NCAA Tournament. We realize that with a difficult schedule and a young team we could face some challenges this season but with the level of talent we have here the future is bright.” High Point was selected third in the 2013 2

Back Row (Left to Right): Adam Storm, Pat Shelton, Mamadee Nyepon, Austin Yearwood Brandon Sloan, Adam Sewell, Dolu Oyewole, Cameron Foster, Yosef Teffera, LoLo Lauture. Middle Row (L to R): Chris Ramsell, Matt Donald, Kevin Fallet, Jacob Boyd, Kody Palmer, Ryan Massey, Erien Campbell, Sonny Mukungu, Joe Tingey. Front Row (L to R): Jonathan Ware, Zane Laughery, Josh de Aragao, Ben Burdon, Matt Gweh, Renato Punyed, Colscon Wiley, Collin Sweeney, Tony Murillo, Dom de Aragao.

Big South Preseason Poll. The Panthers received 87 total points to finish behind defending Big South Regular Season Champion Coastal Carolina and Campbell. Radford finished just behind HPU in fourth followed by Winthrop, Liberty, Gardner-Webb, Longwood, Presbyterian College, UNC Asheville and VMI. Goalkeepers Redshirt-sophomore Kody Palmer returns this season to spearhead a talented group of keepers for High Point. The Panther goalkeeping unit features three quality shot blockers who all stand 6-2 or taller and provide an impressive presence in the net. “Our goalkeeper unit this season is a solid group that has a load of potential,” Fonder said. “Kody Palmer is the projected number one but we feel that both Jacob Boyd and Ryan Massey are strong backups that can push Kody on a daily basis. All three are physically talented and have good starting points from which our goalkeeper coach can work with them and push them to new levels.” Palmer posted one of the top seasons in goal in HPU’s Div. I history last season, tying the record for shutouts in a season and finishing second in both wins and goals-against average. He is just the second High Point keeper to post a goals-against average below 1.00 over the course of an entire season. Palmer is an imposing figure who uses both his height and wingspan to keep shots out of the net. Redshirt-sophomore Jacob Boyd and freshman Ryan Massey will provide High Point with depth behind Palmer this season. Defenders The High Point backline will be a mixture of returners and newcomers this season. The Panthers bring back both starting outside backs in Austin Yearwood and Erien Campbell, but will have to replace 2012 starting center backs Fejiro Okiomah and Todd Ray who both graduated. HPU will look to a combination of redshirt-junior transfer Sonny Mukungu, sophomores Kevin Fallet and Adam Storm and freshman Dolu Oyewole to fill those positions. “We think that we will be able to put a strong and athletic back four together that can defend well,” Fonder said. “The exciting part is that we feel we may have six or seven players to choose from each week. That competitive environment means that whatever combination we put out there will be a strong four because they will have earned it in training. It is exciting to have so many talented players to choose from in the back.” Yearwood started every game for High Point at left back last season and was named a member of the Big South All-Freshman team. He is a skilled defender who used his speed on the flanks to contribute in the attack, finishing with two assists in his first season. Campbell played in 17 games with 10 starts and finished with four points on one goal and two assists. The 6-4 Campbell is very athletic and is able to use his speed and height to disrupt the opponents’ attack both outside and in the box. Four HPU players will compete for time at center back this season. Mukungu joined the Panthers from NC State in the spring. Mukungu started 20 games as a freshman with the Wolfpack in 2010 and was named to the ACC All-Freshman team and a Freshman All-American by College Soccer News. Fallet returns for his second season with the Panthers after sitting out in 2012. Fallet is a tall physical center WWW.HIGHPOINTPANTHERS.COM

2013 Men’s Soccer back capable of winning balls in the air. Storm played in 11 games as a freshman, appearing at center back, right back and in the midfield. He scored his only goal of the season in a win at Elon. Oyewole comes to HPU ranked as one of the top 100 freshmen in the country. Oyewole is a naturally left-footed player who was part of the DC United Youth Academy and trained in England as a senior. Redshirt-junior Matt Donald and freshman Jonathan Ware will also see time in the back for the Panthers. Midfielders Senior All-Conference performer Adam Sewell returns for his final season with the Panthers in 2013 and will helm a midfield group that features many new faces following the graduation of All-Conference performers Shawn Sloan and Shane Malcolm. “The midfield unit is the biggest mystery for us heading into this season,” Fonder said. “We know that Adam Sewell will do a tremendous job anchoring the midfield, but we need to figure out what other players will compliment him. It will be our youngest group on the field which means it might take it the longest to adjust. We have several good players to select from as we try to figure out the best combination.” Sewell has been a three-year starter for High Point in the defensive midfield position. He finished 2012 with seven points on three goals and an assist, giving him six goals and five assists during his first three seasons. Sewell is a hard-nosed player that is very adept at winning balls in the air or with a tackle on the ground. Redshirt-sophomore Cameron Foster is expected to see a great deal of time in the midfield after transferring to High Point from VCU over the summer. Foster appeared in two games for the Rams in 2012. He will play in central midfield and be counted on to contribute from box-to-box. Several freshmen will compete for playing time in their first seasons with the Panthers as Renato Punyed, Chris Ramsell and Brandon Sloan will all try and make an impact. graduated from Reagan Doral High School in Doral Fla., where he was a four-year letter winner. He is the brother of Pablo Punyed who played at St. John’s University. Ramsell comes to HPU from Scottsdale, Ariz., where he played with the Valpo United Club Soccer Team. Sloan is the younger brother of recent HPU midfielder Shawn Sloan. The younger Sloan played club soccer with the prestigious Varder Soccer Academy in Michigan. Junior transfers Dom de Aragao and Josh de Aragao from Mount St. Mary’s, junior Colscon Wiley, sophomore Collin Sweeney and freshman LoLo Lauture will all provide added depth to the central midfield unit. One player who will not see the field for HPU this season is freshman Tony Murillo, who joins the Panthers from the Real Salt Lake Academy. Murillo will redshirt the 2013 season before stepping onto the field in 2014. Forwards The Panthers look to be very dangerous on offense this season with the bevy of talented players they possess at the forward position. Junior Mamadee Nyepon returns at the central forward spot, where he scored 13 goals as a sophomore. He will be flanked by sophomore Ben Burdon and freshman Matt Gweh. “Our forwards are a dynamic group that will cause a lot of problems both with their athleticism and with their movement both on and off the ball,” Fonder said. “The centerpiece of that group is Mamadee Nyepon who we are expecting to be one of the better forwards not just in the conference but in the region. If he can get us goals I think our team will feed off that.” Nyepon was one of the breakout players of 2012, finishing with 29 points on 13 goals and three assists. He proved to be a clutch performer for the Panthers with six game-winning goals and is the leading returning scorer in the Big South this season. The forward possesses a special combination of size and speed that makes him a difficult matchup for any defender.

Burdon scored three goals and had one assist off the bench as a freshman last season. The speedy winger should improve on those numbers while seeing an increased role in 2013. Gweh was one of the top prep players in the state of Minnesota and was named the Gatorade State Player of the Year as a junior in 2011. Both Gweh and Burdon possess great speed that will allow them to run off Nyepon and be very dangerous in the attacking third. Redshirt-freshman Pat Shelton has looked very good in preseason and is in position to provide another dangerous attacker for High Point this season. Shelton played for the Clearwater Chargers Academy Team in Tampa, Fla., and led his team in goals scored during the 2010-11 season. He will see time as both a forward and attacking midfielder this season. Three freshmen who will provide additional depth at the forward position are Zane Laughery, Yosef Teffera and Joe Tingey. Fonder was named the head coach at High Point in December of 2006 after having served as the assistant coach at Elon for the previous four seasons. While with the Phoenix, Fonder helped to build Elon’s men’s soccer program from an RPI of 165 in 2004 to its first-ever top-25 national ranking in the 2006 season. Prior to his time at Elon, Fonder served as the assistant men’s and women’s soccer coach at Roanoke College. He was responsible for recruiting, scheduling, fund raising and academic advising.
