Prospectus & Record Book

Season Preview The High Point University women’s soccer team returns to action this season looking to bounce back from a disappointing 2013. The Panthers will welcome several new faces this season as they look to claim their second regular season title in three seasons. “We have lost some key players from last year’s squad but every year is a new year,” head coach Marty Beall said. “Even though we are young this is not a rebuilding year. This is a strong team that is more athletic than any team we have had in my time here. The quality and quantity of our depth this year is higher than it has ever been.” High Point entered the 2013 season with high expectations but struggled out of the gate before bouncing back with nine wins in its final 15 games to finish 9-10-1 on the season. The Panthers went 6-4-1 in Big South play and earned an upset win over No. 3-seed Longwood on the road in the conference quarterfinals. HPU posted five shutouts on the season including a 1-0 win over East Carolina in double overtime, High Point’s first ever win over the Lady Pirates. The Panthers return five starters and 15 letter winners from last season while also welcoming 17 newcomers. Leading scorer and Big South All-Freshman team selection Kelsey Perrell (7g, 3a) returns along with forwards Jacky Kessler and Sarah Sermonet, midfielders Claire Kelly and Jenny Marshall and defenders Alise LeCompte and Amy Burch. The returning core will be counted on to provide leadership to a group of newcomers that includes 16 freshmen and transfer Bailey Beattie from Tennessee. “We are very excited about this season,” Beall said. “The players this season are a very good group that has a lot to learn. Every day we talk about getting just a little bit better and I think we have done that throughout the preseason.” High Point was picked to finish fifth in the 2014 Big South Preseason Poll. The Panthers received 81 points in the poll. Liberty was picked first followed by Radford, Longwood and Coastal Carolina. HPU finished ahead of Winthrop, Charleston Southern, Presbyterian College, Campbell, UNC Asheville and Gardner-Webb. Goalkeepers High Point will feature a new face in goal this season as freshmen Jordan Beets and Alex Persiani battle it out to see who will replace last year’s starter Jesse May. 2

“I am thrilled with both of our goalkeepers this season,” Beall said. “They both have a lot of talent and a lot of high-level experience. They both have raised the level of play in our defense and I think that it will give our backs confidence no matter which goalkeeper is in net. Both can do extremely well for us.” Beets joins the Panthers from Knoxville, Tennessee where she was a four-year starter, recording 36 career shutouts, including 13 in her senior year. She was a three-time All-State selection and played with the Region III ODP team. Beets is an athletic keeper who uses her long frame to make stops in front of goal. Persiani comes to HPU from Estero, Florida where she was a four-time All-Area selection. She made 18 saves in a district championship win in 2013 and was a member of the Region III ODP team. Persiani is a quality shot blocker who does a very good job keeping her defense organized in front of her. GOALKEEPERS

Defenders High Point returns the most experience on the backline with three starters returning in Kelsey Perrell, Amy Burch and Alise LeCompte. The three returners will lead a talented unit that will look to be amongst the league leaders in goals allowed. “The overall skill level of our backs is very good this season,” Beall said. “We have two very good center backs in Alise and Amy and several speedy outside backs. Kelsey Perrell and Paige Lloyd have really excelled in preseason. Both

can get up and down the flanks and provide quality attack while also covering their bases on the defensive end.” Perrell drops back to left back for the Panthers this season after playing on the wing during her redshirt-freshman season. Perrell appeared in 20 games with 13 starts and led the Panthers with 17 points on seven goals and three assists. She is a speedy player who will provide a two-way presence on the backline. Senior captain LeCompte will once again lead the backline from her center back position this season. LeCompte played in all 20 games with 19 starts and was the Panthers’ top defender, often charged with marking the opponents top attacking threat. Burch returns for her third year in the center of the HPU defense. The junior started all 20 games for HPU in 2013 and is a great defender in the air on set pieces. Junior Colleen Deardoff and redshirtsophomore Hannah Smith will also be counted on to provide depth and experience on the defense this season. Several freshmen will have the chance to make in immediate impact on the HPU defense this season. Paige Lloyd, Becca Sweredoski and Madi Lawrence could all see significant playing time in their first season. Lloyd is an outside back from Fairfax, Virginia. The speedy defender was a four-year letter winner and was named to the ISL All-League team as a senior. Sweredoski comes from Huntingtown, Maryland and will provide depth at both outside back and center back. She was an All-County selection as a senior and her sister is former HPU women’s soccer player Melissa Sweredoski. Lawrence is a center back who comes to High Point from Severna Park, Maryland. Midfielders High Point’s midfield is a talented mix of experience and youth as returners Jenny Marshall, Claire Kelly, Becca Lisson, Marissa Sullivan and Kai-Lin Hernandez will try and guide several skilled newcomers throughout the season. “We have a lot of quality and depth in our midfield,” Beall said. “A lot of our midfielders can play multiple positions in the center which is great for us as it provides us a lot of options. Having Jenny Marshall and Claire Kelly back will give us great leadership and Becca Lisson has come back playing her best soccer ever. When you add in young players who can make things exciting for us it creates a nice mixture of players who can make a difference.” Jenny Marshall emerged as a force in the later part of her freshman season, scoring four goals in the final month of the season with two coming in the Panthers’ Big South quarterfinal win at Longwood. Marshall is a skilled player with the ball at her feet who is a threat both shooting and passing. Kelly, Lisson, Sullivan and Hernandez are all box-to-box midfielders who play deeper in the field and serve as a link between the defense and the offense. Redshirtfreshman Taylor Thompson also returns this season and will provide depth in the midfield. Becca Rolfe, Taylor Romano, Aley Kate McKinley, Meredith Dunker and Paige Rombach are all freshmen that can expect to see time in the midfield this season. Rolfe is a three-time All-State selection from Nashville, Tennessee who will be counted on to provide offense just behind the forward line this season. Romano is a tall two-way midfielder from Johnson, New York who was an All-State nominee after recording 20 goals and WWW.HIGHPOINTPANTHERS.COM

She will be counted on as a box-to-box central midfielder for High Point. Dunker comes to HPU from nearby Greensboro, North Carolina. She is a skilled attacking midfielder who was a twotime All-State selection out of Southeast Guilford High School. Rombach is a defensive midfielder out of Westlake, Ohio who will provide depth in front of the defense. MIDFIELDERS No. Name (Class) 3 4 6 8 10 11 20 21 24 27 28

Forwards Seniors Jacky Kessler and Sarah Sermonet return this season to lead a young group of forwards that includes five redshirt and true freshmen. “With our forwards we will have to work to fill in for the loss of several talented players that have graduated from last year’s team,” Beall said. “We are relying on both experience and youth to fill that void. Players like Jacky Kessler and Sarah Sermonet will help as returning players and we have several dangerous attackers among our newcomers that will provide a problem for our opponents whenever they are on the field.” Kessler had three goals and three assists while playing as a wide attacker last season and enters her final season with 11 goals and 15 assists for HPU. Sermonet Scored three goals and chipped in one assist in her junior season. She is a physical forward who is dangerous with her head in set piece situations. Junior Courtney Butterfass also returns this season and will provide experienced depth for the Panthers. Two redshirt-freshmen will play up top for the Panthers this season as Meghan Beidleman returns from a season-ending injury and Bailey Beattie transferred in from Tennessee after redshirting her freshman season. Beidleman is a pacey attacker who can play from a wide position and is very good with the ball at her feet. Beattie is a talented forward who played her prep soccer at nearby Northern Guilford High

School where she was named to the All-Region team and listed among the top players in the South Atlantic Region by Top Drawer Soccer. True freshmen Michele Micciche, Bri JeanCharles and Lindsay Elsen will all feature in the attack for the Panthers this season. Micciche is a three-time All-State selection from Leesburg, Virginia. She is a speedy forward who can play well either on the wing or in a central role. JeanCharles and Elsen are both athletic forwards who possess a great combination of height and ball skill. Jean-Charles comes from New City, New York and is a three-year All-State selection who finished her prep career with 93 goals and 54 assists despite being playing as both an attacker and a defender. Elsen is a two-time AllState selection out of Lexington, Kentucky. FORWARDS

Marty Beall

Head Coach • Alma Mater: Francis Marion ’03 • First season at HPU: 2009

Marty Beall is entering his sixth season at the helm of the High Point women’s soccer team. In his five seasons at HPU, he has led the Panthers to 45 wins including a 30-13-7 record in Big South play. Beall holds the HPU all-time program records for overall wins and conference wins. He was named the Big South Coach of the Year in 2012 after guiding High Point to its first outright Big South Regular Season Championship. The Panthers finished the 2012 season with a 10-6-6 overall record and an 8-1-2 mark in conference play. The eight conference wins by HPU broke the previous record of six which was set under Beall in 2010 and matched in 2011. Becca Hemby tied to the HPU Div. I single-season record with 11 goals to lead the Panthers and was one of five HPU players to earn All-Conference honors in 2012. Beall began his tenure at HPU with a bang, leading the Panthers to back-to-back Big South Tournament Championships and appearences in the NCAA Tournament in 2009 and 2010. In 2010, High Point tied its own Div. I record for wins in a season with 11 and went 6-2-1 in Big South play to earn a share of its first-ever Big South Regular Season Championship. HPU then went on to win three-straight Big South tournament games by identical scores of 1-0 to secure its second-straight championship and its third in four seasons. Kelli Joline set an HPU Div. I single-season record with 11 goals, including one against Maryland in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, and was named first-team All-Big South in her first collegiate season. In Beall’s first season, the Panthers recovered from a difficult start to the season and finished 4-4-1 in Big South play. High Point’s defense was a big key to the team’s improvement as the Panthers allowed just eight goals in their final 13 games and carried a clean sheet through the entire conference tournament. Marisa Abbott set an HPU Div. I record with 134 saves on the season. 4

Beall’s teams have prided themselves on defense in his five seasons, allowing just 47 goals in 61 games against Big South opponents. High Point set a new conference record with six consecutive shutouts in tournament games in 2009-10. Off the field Beall’s teams have demonstrated excellence in the classroom. The Panthers were awarded the NSCAA Team Academic Award in four-straight seasons from 2010-13 and hold the highest GPA of any High Point team. Brielle Spencer was named the Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year in both 2010 and 2011 and Hemby earned the award in 2013. Hemby was also named a third-team Academic All-American in 2012 and a first-team Academic All-American in 2013. Beall came to HPU after coaching for 10 seasons at Francis Marion, including the last six seasons as the head coach. While at FMU, Beall helped transition the Patriot program from the Division II level to Division I. In his head coaching career, Beall owned a 56-44-7 record at FMU despite having to play outside a conference and consistently scheduling nationally and regionally-recognized programs. During his tenure at Francis Marion, Beall guided the Patriots to four double-digit win totals and four winning seasons. Under his tutelage four players developed into National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) AllRegion performers including a pair of first-team selections. Beall’s pupils also garnered NSCAA/ adidas All-America and Division I All-Independent team accolades. Prior to becoming the Patriots’ head coach in 2003, Beall served four seasons at FMU as assistant coach to Murray Hatzler. While an assistant, Beall helped lead Francis Marion to one of its two NCAA Division II national tournament appearances in 2000. Beall spent two seasons (1997-98) as the women’s assistant coach at the College of Notre Dame in Baltimore, Md., before joining the FMU program in 1999. In addition to his colle-

giate coaching experience, Beall has also coached at the youth league, high school and club levels. He served as the Director of Coaching for the Florence Soccer Association and was the head coach of the South Carolina girls ODP staff for seven years A two-year player at the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore, Beall served as captain of the 1994 squad. He also played one season for the nationally-ranked Montgomery (Junior) College in Rockville, Md. He holds a USSF “B” license and the Premier Diploma from the NSCAA and is an NSCAA Associate staff coach. He is currently on the Region III ODP staff and is Assistant Director of Coaching at the Piedmont Triad Football Club. A native of Damascus, Md., Beall (40) earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Francis Marion in 2003. He and his wife, Paige, welcomes their first child, Callie Rae, in 2012.
