UNIVERSITY Prospectus & Record Book

Season Preview

The 2015 season marks the beginning of a new era for the High Point University men’s soccer team as new head coach EJ O’Keeffe takes over the reigns of the program as the third head coach in HPU’s Div. I history. O’Keeffe takes charge of a team that went 10-8-2 overall and finished third in the Big South with a 6-2-1 conference mark in 2014. Four HPU players earned All-Conference honors as Mamadee Nyepon and Ebe Kudolo were named to the first team, Austin Yearwood was named to the second team and Renato Punyed was named honorable mention. “The preseason has been good so far,” O’Keeffe said. “The guys have competed really well. We aren’t where we need to be towards the end of the season but we are starting to get a rhythm. We have had nine newcomers join us this season and have spent a lot of preseason getting them acclimated and working on team defending. It has been a lot of instruction and grooming the guys to compete everyday.” The Panthers return 18 letter winners and seven starters from last season’s squad, including three of their four All-Conference selections from the previous season. Yearwood returns to lead the backline and was named the Big South Preseason Co-Defensive Player of the Year. He will be joined by Kudolo and Punyed in the midfield as well as returning starters Kody Palmer in goal, Adam Storm and Jonathan Ware in defense and Cameron Foster in midfield. The team has been reinforced by a talented group of nine newcomers that is comprised of eight true freshman and transfer Justin Shear from Clemson. High Point was picked to finish third in the Big South Preseason Poll behind defending champion Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. The Panthers received one first-place vote and 77 overall points to finish ahead of Radford, Liberty, Campbell, Longwood, GardnerWebb, UNC Asheville and Presbyterian College. GOALKEEPERS High Point boasts a great deal of experience between the pipes this season with two keepers that saw time last season in redshirt-senior Kody Palmer and sophomore David Price. The pair will be joined by freshman Keegan Meyer from Silver Spring, Md., to compose a talented trio of keepers for the Panthers. Palmer has started for three seasons in 2

net for HPU. Last season, Palmer battled injuries but still managed to appear in 15 games, posting a 7-6-2 record with a 1.20 goals-against average. In three seasons at High Point, Palmer has gone 26-15-6 with a 1.10 goals-against average and a .730 save percentage. Palmer will be backed by Price and Meyer this season. Price appeared in five games with four starts for High Point during his freshman season, compiling a 3-2-0 record with a 1.00 goals-against average. He will be counted on to push Palmer and provide depth in his second collegiate campaign. Meyer graduated from high school soccer powerhouse DeMatha Catholic where he played in 33 games and finished with a goals-against average of 0.24. At 6-foot-3 he is a tall, physical presence in goal and a very good shot stopper who will add great depth. “I am expecting a big turnaround from the keeper position this season,” O’Keeffe said. “Last season the position was one of our weaker spots and so far in preseason it has been probably our strongest position in the group. We have three strong players in Kody Palmer, David Price and Keegan Meyer. What was considered a weakness will be a strength and I am excited about our keepers.” GOALKEEPERS No. Name (Class) Record GAA Saves 00 David Price (So.) 3-2-0 1.00 3 0 Keegan Meyer (Fr.) -- -- -1 Kody Palmer (R-Sr.) 7-6-2 1.20 44

DEFENDERS High Point returns a great deal of

experience on the backline with three starters and several key reserves all back this season for the Panthers. Big South Preseason CoDefensive Player of the Year Austin Yearwood will lead the backline for HPU. Yearwood is a three-year starter who saw time at both left back and center back last season. In three seasons at HPU, Yearwood has started 55 games and posted 15 assists. Senior Adam Storm and junior Jonathan Ware return this season after starting 17 and 15 games respectively in 2014. Storm is a twoyear starter who will be counted on at center back to provide leadership. Ware is a speedy right back that thrives as a two-way player, contributing to the attack on the flanks while also providing solid one-v-one defending. Redshirt-senior Colscon Wiley, junior Chris Ramsell and sophomore Poli Rodriguez also return for HPU this season while freshmen Johnny Fenwick, Rashid Tetteh and Hunter Allen all join the Panthers’ defensive core. Wiley is a left-footed player who can contribute at left back and left wing for High Point. Ramsell and Rodriguez provide added depth at the right back position. Fenwick, Tetteh and Allen are all competing for time at the open center back position next to Storm. Fenwick is a freshman from England who trained in the Sheffield Wednesday system. He is a big, physical player who can play out of the back with the ball at his feet. Tetteh is an athletic player from Accra, Ghana. He is skilled defender who can slide up to defensive midfield if need be. Allen is a local product from Greensboro Day School that can use his height and strength to control the box and win balls in the air. WWW.HIGHPOINTPANTHERS.COM

HIGH POINT 2015 Men’s Soccer “We are focusing a great deal on defense this season,” O’Keeffe said. “Championships are built on defense and I think we have the pieces to be a great defensive team. I am excited about the depth and experience of the group. We have a lot of returners and that will come in handy especially as we get into the conference season. That experience will pay dividends this season.” DEFENDERS No. Name (Class) 2 Jonathan Ware (Jr.) 3 Adam Storm (Sr.) 4 Austin Yearwood (Sr.) 5 Johnny Fenwick (Fr.) 6 Rashid Tetteh (Fr.) 14 Colscon Wiley (R-Sr.) 16 Chris Ramsell (Jr.) 22 Hunter Allen (Fr.) 27 Poli Rodriguez (So.)

MIDFIELDERS The Panthers return a veteran crew in the midfield with three returning starters in Ebe Kudolo, Renato Punyed and Cameron Foster. The trio will be counted on to control play in the middle of the field and be a catalsyst for the HPU attack. Kudolo burst onto the scene as a freshman, earning first-team All-Big South honors after starting 19 games and tying for the conference lead with eight assists. He is a two-way player that creates chances out of a deeper lying position. Punyed was named honorable mention All-Big South in 2014 following a season in which he made 13 starts and posted four goals and four assists. The junior will sit in the hole at the top of the midfield triangle and conduct the HPU attack this season. Foster has started for two seasons at the defensive midfield position. Last season, Foster started 14 games and scored one goal while also playing a key role in High Point’s defensive efforts. Returners Brandon Sloan and LoLo Lauture and newcomers Ryeong Choi and Keith Nutter will all provide depth for the Panthers in the midfield. Sloan and Lauture are experienced players, entering their third season with the Panthers. The pair can be counted on to play in either of the deeper lying central positions as well as the wing. Nutter is a defensive midfielder from Texas that can sit in front of the backline while Choi is a skilled player from Westchester Country Day School in High Point who can play in the WWW.HIGHPOINTPANTHERS.COM

midfield and on the wing. “We return three experienced players that we feel will give us one of the stronger midfields in the Big South,” O’Keeffe said. “Renato, Ebe and Cameron are all returning players who have played in the conference and know what to expect. We also have added some players that will give us competition and added depth.” MIDFIELDERS No. Name (Class) 8 Ebe Kudolo (So.) 10 Renato Punyed (Jr.) 15 Brandon Sloan (Jr.) 18 Pat Shelton (R-Jr.) 21 LoLo Lauture (Jr.) 23 Cameron Foster (R-Sr.) 25 Keith Nutter (Fr.) 28 Ryueng Choi (Fr.)

FORWARDS High Point will feature a brand new attacking line this season after losing three starters from 2014, including all-time leading goal scorer Mamadee Nyepon. The Panthers will look to several players to fill the void up top and provide scoring in 2015. Senior Erien Campbell, redshirt-junior Pat Shelton and sophomore Avery Ryan all return this season for HPU and have shown the ability to score goals in the past. Campbell slides back up to the forward position this season after playing in the back in 2014. The 6-4 Campbell has the ideal size and skill combination to play at the central forward position as he showed as a sophomore in 2013 when he scored five goals off the bench. Shelton is a winger that scored six goals as a redshirt freshman before battling injuries during his redshirt-sophomore campaign. Ryan was second on the team last season with six goals and will be expected to fill a bigger role both on the wing and at central forward in his second season. Redshirt-freshman Justin Shear and freshmen Bana Ganidekam and Ben Hietala will all see time for the Panthers in their first season at HPU. Shear is a redshirt-freshman who transferred to High Point from Clemson. He is a speedy winger that provides work rate on the outside. Ganidekam joins HPU from Accra, Ghana. He possesses great speed on the wing and the ability to tuck inside with the ball at his feet. Hietala was named the top men’s soccer player in Montana as a senior at

Bozeman High School in 2014. He scored 47 goals in his prep career, third most in the state’s history, including 26 in one season. Senior Collin Sweeney and redshirtsophomore Yosef Teffera will provide experience and added depth for the Panthers at the forward and wing positions in 2015. “Obviously we have some question marks up top right now with the graduation of Mamadee Nyepon,” O’Keeffe said. “Mamadee was a great player and a vocal leader but I think that we started to do the work to fill that void in the spring. We have some good experienced players and some talented incoming players. Head Coach • Alma Mater: UNCG ’09 • First season at HPU: 2010

EJ O’Keeffe was named the third HPU men’s soccer coach in the progam’s Div. I hisrory in July 2015. O’Keeffe ascended to thehead coach position after five years with the Panthers in which he rose from the Volunteer Assistant position to Associate Head Coach. During O’Keeffe’s tenure, the High Point University men’s soccer program has achieved unprecedented success. The team has posted a combined 55-34-12 record (.604), including an impressive 29-11-6 (.696) mark in Big South play. The Purple & White have set the top-4 single-season program win marks during that time, including a 2010 season in which the team became the first in Big South history to post a perfect 8-0-0 mark in league play. The Panthers also have recorded the top-5 single-season point totals in program history while registering school records for shutouts in 2010 and 2012. Over the course of O’Keeffe’s five seasons, the program has churned out 25 all-Big South selections while 12 student-athletes have earned NSCAA all-region accolades. Karo Okiomah earned NSCAA All-America honors for the Panthers in 2010 and is one of four players to be drafted into Major League Soccer during the five-year span. In the classroom, two Panthers have garnered Academic All-America accolades while the team has been selected for an NSCAA Team Academic Award in each of the five seasons. O’Keeffe has been a stalwart on the recruiting circuit for the Panthers and was instrumental in inking HPU’s top-25 recruiting class in 2013. The Panthers are the only Big South team to accomplish the feat since 2010. In addition, O’Keeffe has recruited three HPU Freshman All-Americans and was responsible for signing High Point’s all-time leading scorer, Mamadee Nyepon, in 2011. O’Keeffe played for three seasons as a defender for UNCG. He appeared in 61 games in his three seasons, compiling nine points on three goals and three assists. He was named to the All-Southern Conference team in 2008 and 4

was a team captain in 2009. During his time at UNCG, the Spartans appeared in two Southern Conference championship games, winning in 2008 and advancing to the NCAA “Sweet 16.” O’Keeffe graduated with a B.S. in Business Administration from UNCG in 2010. He played for the Carolina Dynamo PDL team from 2007-10. O’Keeffe holds a USSF National “A” Coaching License and a National “Youth” Coaching License. He graduated from UNC Greensboro in 2010 with a B.S. in Business Administration with a concentration in Entrepreneurship. O’Keeffe is both a native and current resident of Greensboro, N.C. What They’e Saying... “EJ O’Keeffe is one of the bright young coaches in the country. He is a tenacious recruiter and he has the right values when it comes to coaching and guiding young men. He will continue to develop the High Point University men’s soccer program into a national contender.” - Mike Noonan - Head Coach, Clemson University “Congratulations to High Point University, the athletic department and the men’s soccer program on the hiring of EJ O’Keeffe. EJ is one of the hardest working young coaches in the country and I am excited to see him get the opportunity to lead the High Point program.” - Bobby Muuss - Head Coach, Wake Forest University “EJ is one of the best bright young coaches in this region and I know he’s going to do a fantastic job at High Point. He cares passionately about the program and I know he will get the most out of the players to continue to build upon the program’s success.” - Chris Little - Head Coach, Elon University
