This past summer was filled with challenges and opportunities for Centennial Water & Sanitation District and the rest of Colorado, as a multi-year drought stretched into its third year. Centennial Water customers were asked to cut back water use by 15-20% and to limit outdoor watering to two-days per week. And they responded!

“We are thrilled with the community’s support and their successful efforts to save water,” said Centennial Water General Manager Sam Calkins. “Since implementing Stage 1 drought restrictions on July 20, we have seen overall water use drop by 15%, effectively allowing us to conserve more water and maintain levels in our reservoirs.”

Residential and commercial customers, and homeowner’s associations all achieved reductions in water use this year. Centennial Water staff worked very closely with HOAs, golf courses and its largest customers to achieve water reductions. The Highlands Ranch Metro District was a great partner, successfully reducing its water use by 30%. And the Highlands Ranch Community Association implemented new xeric landscapes at its facilities, and waived fees for residents to convert water-thirsty grass to more drought tolerant landscapes.

“As a community I think we made great strides in 2022, coming together to address a vital problem that touches well beyond our service area,” added Calkins. “Continuing to learn to live with drought and find ways to improve water conservation will be key to our success not just this year, but for many years to come.”
