Opportunities offered for high school students

Teenagers in Highlands Ranch have excellent options to contribute to their community, gain experience, develop future job skills, make friends and spend time outdoors while working or volunteering with the Metro District.

Both employment and volunteer opportunities are available throughout the year.

Helping build resumes

Teen employees can gain valuable life skills such as communication, customer service, leadership and problem solving.

“Our part-time jobs can introduce teens to the opportunities recreation can provide to an entire community. They also allow exploration of the possible long-term career paths within the field,” said Carolyn Peters, recreation and park services manager.

The Metro District hires teens ages 14+ as sports officials for flag football, baseball and softball. Teens ages 16+ can apply for positions as batting cage attendants, as assistant track and field coach, or on seasonal crews working throughout our parks. The Metro District has three organic gardens located in Cheese Ranch Historic & Natural Area, Dad Clark Park and Foothills Park. Each has amended soil, a water source, trash receptacle, organic waste bin and a fenced area. The growing season is open for gardeners from May 1 through Oct. 30 each year, with an annual fee for residents of $50/year and $58/year for nonresidents. One plot is allowed per household. Students volunteer with the Metro District for a variety of reasons, including helping others, developing new skills and completing high school community service requirements. Some of the most popular volunteer opportunities for teens include pitching in during large community events, such as the annual Ice Cream Social or Holiday Celebration, and helping keep Highlands Ranch beautiful with independent open space cleanups and plantings.
