Winter watering may be needed

During extended dry periods over the winter, your landscape may need some supplemental watering to help it survive the winter months. In typical years, minimal outside watering is necessary in the fall and winter due to increased precipitation. However, when we have an extended period of no snowfall, landscapes may need a little extra care.

Centennial Water provides a small outdoor water budget to supplement precipitation when it is dry over the winter. Residential customers, in addition to their indoor water budget, receive 1,000 gallons of water per billing cycle for outdoor use. Commercial accounts receive an additional water budget based on their meter size. This wintertime water budget is intended to keep trees, shrubs and other vegetation (non-grass) healthy during dry spells.

Centennial Water recommends customers hand water if necessary during warm, dry periods. This ensures you know exactly where the water is going and approximately how much you have applied. This will help you stay within your allotted water budget.

When and how to water trees during the winter

Trees are a valuable part of our landscape and we want to make sure they make it through the winter. Sometimes this means giving trees some extra water when Mother Nature doesn’t supply any.

1. During prolonged dry periods, water trees once or twice a month.

2. Water when temperatures are above 40 degrees and when the ground is not frozen.
