Locally Grown on the Green

Wednesdays Through October 25 | 2:00 - 5:00 P.M.

Choose the food less traveled at The Green Market – Locally Grown on The Green – Cashiers farm stand market for local growers.

The market is “producer-only,” meaning that the vendor must be the grower or producer of all the products they sell. Vendors must produce within a 125-mile radius of Cashiers. That means that the season for each fruit and vegetable is longer. Shopping at the Green Market provides a forum for learning how

food is grown, who grew it, and why it tastes so good.

Fill your basket with naturally-raised meat and dairy items, fresh eggs, jams, pickles, and freshly baked bread. Set your table with fresh cut flowers that morning or plant your entryway with locally grown perennials.

Fourth of July Extravaganza

Come one, come all! Come on out to The Village Green for an evening of food, music, and of course, fireworks. The annual 4th of July Extravaganza on the Green will take place at 6:30 P.M. on Saturday, July 1, at The Village Green Commons.

Entertainment will be provided in the form of the rhythm and blues band Continental Divide, as well as a fireworks show featuring over 1,000 colorful bursts.

Admission to the event is free, however

donations are encouraged and incredibly appreciated! Many small communities have eliminated fireworks from their celebrations due to the costs of a large pyrotechnic display, but The Village Green believes it’s important to preserve this patriotic tradition for the Cashiers community.

Attendees are encouraged to bring picnics and coolers of their own. Personal tents are not allowed. We hope to see you all there.

The Bell Garden

Entering this property visitors will actually be walking into three unique landscaped areas that are surrounded by the forest in all its green glory and the sound of water rippling down Silver Slip Creek. The landscapes here were designed by Mary Palmer Dargan and have complimentary themes that keep the landscape interesting and inviting.

The front entry node welcomes guests and friends with a display of planters, Dancing Peacock maples on the left and on the right Mycrophylla, or large leaf magnolias that are repeated to create a canopy theme seen throughout the property.

The barn/office/guest quarters building is on this upper entry piece of the property. It was the first area to be planted and features a Japanese-styled garden that leads out to the Great Lawn which overlooks the main house. The Great Lawn is flanked by an arboretum of small shrubs, trees, native azaleas, and a wide variety of Japanese Maples that provide a beautiful vista from every vantage point.

Descending down the Great Lawn the Terraces come into view on the left side of the main house. The Terraces are planted with Standard Limelight Hydrangeas, Quick Fire Panicle Hydrangeas, along with a multitude of perennials including peonies, dahlias, irises, and lambs ears among others.

Leading down to the Entertainment Pavilion and the water is a stone pathway that descends down the right side of the home. The creek can run wild in the summer due to the rains that accompany the seasonal rainforest climate in the area. Plants that are used here include Polygonum, Solomon’s Seal, Black Cohosh, Ferns, Astilbe along with others, and a few Hosta that have survived the deer.

Adding to the diversity and beauty of this property is the presence of trout holes. The pavilion and fire pit in this area create a perfect setting to relax and enjoy friends and family. There is so much to see and experience in this diverse and lovely property nestled in the woods.

The Bruce Garden

Located on the bank of the Whitewater River and deep inside the Nantahala National Forest is a very special garden maintained by its owners who have spent years developing and protecting the trees and plants that live there. Taylor and Dottie Bruce built their log home and moved in on New Year’s Eve 1999.

On one side of the house, there was a low, marshy area being fed by an underground spring that they decided to develop into a trout pond. They continued to build and maintain the three acres surrounding their home. The gazebo River House was built in 2005 accompanied by landscaping of the backyard and the area surrounding the trout pond.

Next came the five-leveled terrace garden. Another underground spring was utilized to develop the Upper and Lower Stream gardens. There are many special aspects

to this beautiful piece of property including the hardwood trees, the pines, the natural rhododendrons, and mountain laurel to name a few. There are over 100 native hemlock trees that the Bruces have been treating for over 15 years to help combat the destructive wooly adelgid. There are also hundreds of Hostas and one very special Hosta that has been passed down for several generations. There is a photo of Mrs. Bruce’s mother when she was six years old standing in front of the “ancestor” of this Hosta. The landscape is also graced by Cinnamon Ferns that grow over three feet in height.

Mr. and Mrs. Bruce can be found maintaining and loving their property on many days of each week during the growing season and the fruit of their labors will be enjoyed by all who come to visit.

The Morse Garden

Visiting this landscape will give the visitor a taste of England meets the mountains. With a view of Whiteside Mountain this graceful garden beckons visitors to stay and be captivated by the beauty nature has to share.

The property was purchased in 1987 and the home and landscape were built 16 years ago. An English garden theme was chosen for a very good reason. Mr. Morse’s grandfather studied and worked at the famous Kew Gardens outside London before he immigrated to the United States. He shared his love of gardening with his grandchildren and his influence is evident in the garden design here. Jeremy Smearman of Planters helped design the garden and Bo Gambrell supervises maintenance in the garden and in the surrounding landscape.

Large boxwoods frame the home and

garden and perennials are seen growing throughout this part of the landscape. Crabapple stone walkways were included to provide a graceful path around the home and garden.

During the summer months additional planters with perennials, annuals and dahlias are on display to add to the natural beauty of the property. A stunning wildflower meadow edges the landscape with a view of the mountains in the distance. Visitors will also appreciate the trails that lead to viewing areas, to Fowler Creek and especially the one that leads down to the fire pit where the family enjoys gathering. There are several evergreens, spruces and cedars to stand guard over the property and if the time of day is right a bear or two can be found pruning the landscape with their own unique methods.

The Warren Garden

Welcome to a garden that began in the mid-1930s and continues today to share its natural beauty for those who venture to explore it. The story began with Mr. James Erwin Warren, Sr. who was the president of Southern Bell Telephone Company and built a summer residence in 1937 on a ten-acre tract on Cashiers Lake. He then bought 301 acres on Whiteside Cove Road and had his cabin built as a quiet “get-away.”

The Warren chestnut cabin was built with help from local people in 1938. The chestnut logs were cut from the property and skidded to the site on Polly Branch with oxen. The granite stone fireplace was built by stonemason Ralph Fugate, from granite cut from the underside of Timber Ridge. Folks from the area helped Mr. Warren find local boxwood, spruce and barberry from an area nursery owned by Ed Rice. He loved nature, finding local

plants and gardening. The cabin and property became known by local residents as “the Polly Place.” Mr. Warren continued to vacation here and enjoy the property in Cashiers until his death in 1952. The cabin was deserted from that time until 1972 when Mr. Warren’s grandson, John Stephens Warren, began restoring the property and cabin. He has inherited his grandfather’s passion for gardening and has grown that passion into a lifelong landscape career.

Exploring this landscape visitors will find the chestnut cabin nestled in with a variety of wildflowers that are still present in the garden today along with moss, ferns, rhododendron, laurel and other native plants that have created a verdant and serene place where nature welcomes visitors with her natural beauty and simplicity.

Blessing of the Animals

Saturday, September 30 | 11:00 A.M. - 12:30 P.M.

The Blessing of the Animals is a tradition in the Cashiers community started by the Church of the Good Shepherd. Cashiers’ area churches will observe this annual event at The Village Green Commons on Frank Allen Road. Bring a chair to this gathering with animals that features music and prayer in celebration of all God’s creatures great and small. Each animal receives a special blessing.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a donation for the Cashiers Highlands Humane Society. Besides a monetary gift, items like blankets, rugs, towels, Milk Bones, unscented cat litter and canned dog and cat food are useful as well as

always needed.

The Village Green will provide water and trash cans for the animals, which must be leashed or otherwise secured and under the owners’ control at all times.

The tradition of animal or pet blessings is in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi’s love for all of God’s creatures. St. Francis, whose feast day is October 4, wrote a Canticle of the Creatures, an ode to God’s living things: “All praise to you, O Lord, for all these brother and sister creatures.”

StoryWalk

In the summer of 2020, the leaders of the Albert Carlton-Cashiers Community Library, The Village Green, The Literacy Council of Cashiers, and Vision Cashiers began a collaboration to install a StoryWalk in The Village Green.

A StoryWalk provides an outdoor adventure that champions reading along with family connection, health, and wellness. Pages of a story are posted at a series of stations along the trail at The Village Green, allowing families and friends to enjoy a story as they walk the path.

The collaboration between these organizations has allowed the community to enjoy four books along the StoryWalk: Every two

months a new, seasonally appropriate book is debuted on the trail.
