About The Village Green

T

he Village Green is a park for the people. In 1992, the founders saved two acres at the crossroads of Highways 64 and 107 in Cashiers from commercial development. The Village Green was established with the mission to preserve and enhance the land for civic, spiritual, academic, recreational and cultural activities. Twenty-five years later, The Village Green encompasses more than 13 acres and is the emerald heart of the community. The Village Green attracts thousands of visitors each year, providing a window into pleasurable pursuits and traditions that make Cashiers unique. The park is a gathering place for people of all ages, origins and economic backgrounds. People come from all over the region to enjoy the gardens, walking paths and trails, amazing public art and the expansive children’s playground. The Village Green invites both

4 | Events at The Village Green 2019

leisurely walks and intense workouts; quiet places to picnic and read; settings to celebrate with friends and family; and a variety of popular concerts, festivals, lecture series and other community events. Equally significant from a conservation perspective, The Village Green serves as a natural oasis. The park is an important environment to cultivate native plants and pollinators. It also provides a respite for migrating nesting birds. It truly is an integrated ecosystem where humans and nature interact. You are invited to wander the park and enjoy the gardens here before or after your tour. The Village Green is conserved and maintained by a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Unlike other public parks, The Village Green receives no public funding. Operations and improvements are funded solely by individuals and special fundraising events like the Joy Garden Tour in July.

Locally Grown

Wednesdays May 22 - September 4 | 3:00 - 6:00 P.M.

C

hoose the Food Less Traveled at Locally Grown on the Green, Cashiers’ farm stand market for local growers beginning May 22. The markets are “producer only,” meaning that the vendor must be the grower or producer of all the products they sell. Vendors must produce within a 125-mile radius of Cashiers. That means that the season for each fruit and vegetable is longer. Shopping at the Locally Grown on the Green market provides a forum for learning how food is grown, who grew it, and why it tastes so good. Fill your basket with naturally raised meat and dairy items, fresh eggs, jams, pickles,

12 | Events at The Village Green 2019

freshly baked bread and delicious granola. Set your table with fresh cut flowers that morning or plant your entryway with locally grown perennials. Always fresh. Always local. Locally Grown on the Green is open during the growing season from 3:00 to 6:00 P.M. every Wednesday at The Village Green Commons on Frank Allen Road next to the Cashiers Post Office. Special market events are planned throughout summer. Be sure to visit cashiersgreenmarket.wordpress.com and “Like” us on Facebook (CashiersGreen) to keep current with vendor information and market news.

finickiest of tastes. Members of the Cashiers Rotary will also show off their culinary skills at the refreshment booth, offering hot dogs, hamburgers, veggie burgers and more to keep you fueled up as you hunt for the perfect piece to add to your collection. Entrance to the Cashiers Rotary Arts and Crafts Shows is free to attend, but all donations are accepted and much appreciated. half of the under-served and underprivileged within our community. To date, the club has distributed more than $1 million and, with your help, hopes to expand the reach even further. Join this celebratory weekend of fine arts, local crafts, family fun and old-fashioned philanthropy in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. For more information, visit cashiersrotary.org.

Yoga on the Green Select Wednesdays June - August | 4:30 P.M.

O

n six Wednesday evenings this summer, yogis of all ages will move their bodies through a series of graceful poses during a new program called Yoga On the Green. It’s a day-and-night difference practicing yoga in the studio versus practicing yoga outdoors. There’s nothing quite like feeling the wind on your skin, hearing the children play in the distance and smelling fresh air all while you’re doing yoga. Yoga’s many proven health benefits include lowering blood pressure, reducing anxiety, and relieving depression. It improves your circulation, boosting immune function and

36 | Events at The Village Green 2019

mental focus. Studies also show that yoga helps with weight loss and even slows the aging process. Yoga On the Green will be at 4:30 P.M. Wednesdays June 12 and 26, July 10 and 24, and August 14 and 21. Local yoga instructors will lead these one-hour community classes at The Village Green Commons. The classes are open to all levels. Bring a mat, towel, and water. Please arrive 15 minutes before register. Yoga On the Green is free, but a $5 suggested donation is encouraged. Fireworks Extravaganza Friday, July 5 | 6:30 P.M.

F

ireworks are a quintessential American celebration of Independence Day. In Cashiers, The Village Green presents the annual “Fireworks Extravaganza On the Green” beginning at 6:30 p.m. Friday, July 5 at The Village Green Commons. Residents and visitors to the area are invited to dine, play and dance the night away. The spectacular evening entertainment features a concert by the rhythm and blues band Continental Divide. The band plays all the classics from a wide variety of artists that will make you want to sing and get up out of your chair for Cashiers largest dance party! Bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on. Local food and beverages will be available for purchase but picnics and coolers are welcome. The main event, of course, is the breath-

44 | Events at The Village Green 2019

taking fireworks display that will begin shortly after dark. More than 1,0 0 0 brilliant and colorful bursts will light up the Cashiers’ night sky. The show lasts about 30 minutes and is accompanied by a soundtrack that pays tribute to America with patriotic music. Admission is free, however donations to a community fireworks fund will be collected to help with the cost of the event. Many small towns have been forced to eliminate fireworks because of the expense of putting on a pyrotechnic display. The Village Green believes it is important to celebrate America’s birthday and works to preserve this important tradition for the Cashiers community. Join us and wear your red, white and blue!

Blessing of the Animals Saturday, October 5 | 11:00 A.M.

P

eople are invited to bring all varieties of pets for the annual Blessing the Animals at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, October 5, to The Village Green Commons on Frank Allen Road. Gather on the lawn for a parade of animals, prayers, music and celebration of all of God’s creatures. Over the years, local ministers have blessed a menagerie of pets at the service, including horses, llamas, goats, sheep, guinea pigs as well as many cats and dogs. Started as a tradition in the Cashiers community by the Church of the Good Shepherd, each animal receives a special blessing. Attendees are encouraged to bring a donation for the Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society. Besides a monetary gift, items like

52 | Events at The Village Green 2019

blankets, rugs, towels, Milk Bones, unscented cat litter and canned dog and cat food are useful as well as always needed. The Village Green will provide water and trash cans for the animals, which must be leashed or otherwise secured and under the owners’ control at all times. The tradition of animal or pet blessings is in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi’s love for all of God’s creatures. St. Francis, whose feast day is October 4, wrote a “Canticle of the Creatures,” an ode to God’s living things: “All praise to you, O Lord, for all these brother and sister creatures.” For more information, email info@ VillageGreenCashiersNC.com, or call (828) 743-3434.

The Pavilion in the center of the park is a sizable covered shelter with six long picnic tables. “This past year the Pavilion was used for baby showers, bridal luncheons, wedding welcome parties and many, many birthday parties,” comments Ann Self, Executive Di-

Along with these, the Hayes Fairchild Memorial Garden is a lovely, intimate setting for small gatherings with stacked stone seating under a vine covered arbor. During spring and summer, The Village Green blossoms with native azalea, rhododendron and lupine as well as roses and hydrangeas. The spectacular dahlia garden blooms into early fall. The beauty of The Village Green inspires creativity to events memorable and unique. “Everyone loves a party,” says Self, “What better place to celebrate than in the delightful green heart of Cashiers!” If you would like to know more about The Village Green hosting a wedding or special event, email info@VillageGreenCashiersnc.com or call (828) 743-3434.

This 5,900-square-foot timber frame building will enhance the lifestyle of the Cashiers area by elevating public engagement; strengthening the physical and economic health of the community; expanding educational opportunities; promoting the arts; providing year-round entertainment; and enriching the wellbeing of residents and visitors to the area. The Village Green is committed to bridging diverse populations and transforming individual lives. “This structure will be made of thousands of individual parts.
