THE HIGHLANDS-CASHIERS PLATEAU MAY FEEL TIMELESS, BUT IT’S ANYTHING BUT SLEEPY.

There’s the vibrant community of doers and dreamers – the year-round locals, the seasonal residents, the people who arrive as part of a mad escape or a plan to discover the things that have been lost in 21st century life. They’re the ones who breathe life into the pages of Laurel Magazine, month after month. Laurel chronicles the lives of the twin communities. We spotlight the men and women who give Cashiers and Highlands their unique character. Our calendar is a signpost for the events that fill the days and nights with wonder and excitement, and we highlight the restaurants and galleries that give both communities their unique anything-but-small town flavor. And we’ll whisper to you about the unspoiled natural treasures that are almost transcendent in their magic and mystery.

H

Our History

ighlands Playhouse is one of the oldest professional summer stock theaters in the country. It is the legacy of some of Highlands’ earliest forward-thinking families. The first troupe, in the mid-1930s, was all amateurs. They performed in the Highlands School auditorium, which had been designed by an Asheville architect who charged $50 for his plans. “Even to this day,” writes Highlands historian Randolph Shaffner, “the acoustics are nearly perfect.” They started with one summer play. And with bigger ambitions, the group formally organized in the late 1930s as the Highlands Little Theater, later renamed Highlands Community Theater, and then Highlands Playhouse. Their first big production was the Broadway comedy Dulcy, written by Pulitzer Prize-winners George S. Kaufman and Marc Connelly. The lead character was played by Anne Altstaetter, who had recently graduated from London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts and whose mother was active in the League of Women Voters. Reserved seats for Dulcy cost 50 cents. For patrons on a tight budget, general admission bleacher seats were 35 cents. It was a sell-out crowd. Over the years, the local ensemble began to bring in professionals, including top-notch actors and directors. They mounted sophisticated plays by important authors: Thornton Wilder’s Our Town, Molière’s The Doctor in Spite of Himself, Eugène Ionesco’s Marriage

Proposal, George Bernard Shaw’s Androcles and the Lion, and Ayn Rand’s The Night of January 26th. Highlands Playhouse has trained its share of distinguished alumni. Collin Wilcox, for example, a regular on the Highlands stage and whose mother founded the group, went on to join the Mike Nichols/Elaine May improvisational group, The Compass Players, in Chicago. She also played opposite Gregory Peck in the film adaptation of To Kill A Mockingbird, as Mayella, whose false accusation of being raped by a black farmhand is at the center of the story. Today, Highlands Playhouse is a critical pillar of the Plateau’s cultural life. With three to four plays each summer, it is still a springboard for local drama students to hone their skills alongside professional mentors. For children, the Highlands Playhouse Summer Camp offers fun, hands-on exposure to the magical experience of writing and performing a play. And off-season, the performance space becomes a movie theater for first-run films. Just over the horizon, Highlands Playhouse will be moving to a new home − joining other cultural organizations in the newly-expanded Performing Arts Center. The new theatre will seat as many as 350, with state-of-the-art sound and lighting systems. Ground breaking is expected to start once a fundraising goal is met. Danny Kaye An Evening With

Presented by Highlands Playhouse and Highlands PAC

T

alkin’ Broadway says Brian Childers, “makes you feel as if you are watching the real Danny Kaye. Every gesture is perfect and he has mastered the mimicry and dialects that were such a great part of Kaye’s performances. It is no wonder that the Helen Hayes Awards committee chose to honor Mr. Childers for this portrayal.” With tenderness and great affection, Brian pays this tribute to one of Broadway and Hollywood’s greatest showmen. Brian becomes Danny Kaye in a way that lets a new generation discover – and an older generation revisit – a unique performer.

W

hen Brian Childers crossed paths with Danny Kaye, the entertainment giant had already passed into legend, leaving behind a treasure trove of Broadway memories and comedic films. When initially approached to play Danny Kaye, Brian dived in and learned everything he could about the comedic genius and in doing so, found a connection and an uncanny ability to channel Mr. Kaye in all his unique glory. Having performed in numerous incarnations of the

story of Danny Kaye in Danny and Sylvia: A Musical Love Story, (which garnered him the Helen Hayes Award for Best Actor in a Musical), The Kid From Brooklyn, in both Los Angeles and Chicago and Danny and Sylvia Off-Broadway in New York City, Brian took some time away from channeling Mr. Kaye until, once again, he was asked to bring the music and story of Danny Kaye to Washington, DC. The one man show, An Evening with Danny Kaye was born and was received with Critical Acclaim.

Anniversary Celebration Celebrating 80 Years of Summer Stock Theater Friday, July 27 | Highlands Playhouse

I

n 1938 the Highlands Little Theatre performed its first play. Now, 80 years later, people of the Plateau still have a passionate love affair with the little theatre that evolved into a pillar of local culture. Happy Anniversary, Highlands Playhouse! On July 27, before Damn Yankees curtain rises, there will be a brief retrospective of the theater’s legacy. For the price of a regular admission ticket you can participate in testimonials and toasts from board members, staff, and cast members who’ll share their favorite theatre recollections. Mayor Pat Taylor will deliver an official Highlands Playhouse proclamation, which will become part of Highlands’ historical archives. During the evening’s intermission, indulge in a bit of bubbly and sinfully delicious desserts. After the performance engage in some serious elbow-rubbing with past cast members and special guest stars Meryl

Streep and Mr. George Clooney. Okay, the Streep/ Clooney teaser was pure propaganda, but who knows when the next Playhouse star might rise and bring fame to our mounta intop? Making it big is not out of the question. Many of our alums have gone on to greatness, among them Collin Wilcox who played opposite Gregory Peck in the film adaptation of To Kill A Mockingbird. Tim Lundy of Rosewood Market will be providing the desserts and the Highlands Wine Shoppe will be providing the champagne for the dessert reception during intermission. Tickets will likely sell out, so purchase yours early online at HighlandsPlayhouse.org. Or call the Playhouse at (828) 526-2695 or stop by the Box Office between 11:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. For more information or to add your historical perspective to the event, please contact Debi Bock at (404) 323-9444 or bock7@me.com.

Summer Camp

Children’s Theatre Summer Camp July 2 - 13 | Final Showcase Friday, July 13, 4:30 P.M.

T

he Highlands Playhouse is always growing and looking for ways to entertain and engage the entire community. From the summer series of professional stage productions to the year-round, first-run movie theater, it offers something for everyone. This summer marks the return of the Children’s Theatre Camp. The program offers campers a chance to work with a team of professional actors to discover and explore many aspects of theatre such as acting, singing, and dancing. Directors Lance Matzke and Bill Patti also recognize that drama programs teach skills that will benefit the students throughout their lives. “Students in drama learn so much more than just how to act on stage,” says Mr. Matzke. “The skills required to be a good actor also make for better adults in general.” He hopes that students will gain confidence and expand their creativity while taking away other valuable skills such as problem solving, thinking under pressure, picking up on non-verbal cues, as well as

the ability to take direction…all while having a lot of fun in the process. “In 2018 we at the Highlands Playhouse renew out commitment to providing education to the youth of the Highlands/Cashiers Plateau,” says Mr. Matzke. “During the school year, we offer an after school program. In 2018-19 we have ambitious plans to increase those after school activities at the middle and high school levels.” Highlands Playhouse’s acclaimed summer camp for kids, held on site, runs from July 2-13. Camp concludes with a free finale performance for family, friends, and the community on Friday, July 13, at 4:30 P.M. Campers participate in two weeks of camp for $450. If you have more than one child signing-up, rates are discounted to $425 for additional campers in the same family. For more summer activity information, contact the Highlands Playhouse at (828) 526-2695. General or volunteer information can be found at HighlandsPlayhouse.org.
