Our History H

ighlands Playhouse is one of the oldest professional summer stock theaters in the country. It is the legacy of some of Highlands’ earliest forward-thinking families. The first troupe, in the mid-1930s, was all amateurs. They performed in the Highlands School auditorium, which had been designed by an Asheville architect who charged $50 for his plans. “Even to this day,” writes Highlands historian Randolph Shaffner, “the acoustics are nearly perfect.” They started with one summer play. And with bigger ambitions, the group formally organized in the late 1930s and what was to become Highlands Playhouse was born. Their first big production was the Broadway comedy Dulcy, written by Pulitzer Prizewinners George S. Kaufman and Marc Connelly. The lead character was played by Anne Altstaetter, who had recently graduated from London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts and whose mother was active in the League of Women Voters. Reserved seats for Dulcy cost 50 cents. It was a sell-out crowd. Over the years, the local ensemble began

to bring in professionals, including top-notch actors and directors. They mounted sophisticated plays by important authors: Thornton Wilder’s Our Town, Molière’s The Doctor in Spite of Himself, Eugène Ionesco’s Marriage Proposal, George Bernard Shaw’s Androcles and the Lion, and Ayn Rand’s The Night of January 26th. Highlands Playhouse has trained its share of distinguished alumni. Collin Wilcox, for example, a regular on the Highlands stage and whose mother founded the group, went on to join the Mike Nichols/Elaine May improvisational group, The Compass Players, in Chicago. She also played opposite Gregory Peck in the film adaptation of To Kill A Mockingbird, as Mayella, whose false accusation of being raped by a black farmhand is at the center of the story. Just over the horizon, Highlands Playhouse will be moving to a new home − joining other cultural organizations in the newly-expanded Performing Arts Center. The new theatre will seat as many as 350, with state-of-the-art sound and lighting systems. Source: “Heart of the Blue Ridge” by Randolph Shaffner

A Note from Bill

he Highlands Playhouse has built a reputation on delivering high quality entertainment featuring some of the next generation of American theatre stars. Our cast members, directors, choreographers, and designers over the past nine years have gone onto careers on Broadway, in National Tours, and at the major regional theatres across America. We are bringing talent to Highlands that would cost double or triple to see at “major” theatres across the country. Highlands is the greatest little town in America, but we are bringing first rate talent this season for three of our most popular and engaging shows - Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story, Oklahoma!, and Always, Patsy Cline. Come out to the theatre and experience one of our nation’s oldest and most revered summer stock experiences!

Bill Patti, Artistic Director

A Note from Lance A

s we head into another season – our 81st! – I am filled with enthusiasm about the quality of our productions and the hard work and ingenuity that our team pours into every aspect of our theatrical offerings. It is with great pride that I welcome the many residents and visitors of the Plateau to come enjoy an evening of music, movement, and magic at the Playhouse this summer.

Oklahoma!

Written by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II Based on the Lynn Riggs’ 1931 play, Green Grow the Lilacs

R

odgers & H a m m e r stein’s first collaboration remains, in many ways, their most innovative, having set the standards and established the rules of musical theatre still being followed today. Set in a Western Indian territory just after the turn of the century, the high-spirited rivalry between the local farmers and cowboys provides the colorful background against which Curly, a handsome cowboy,

and Laurey, a winsome farm girl, play out their love story. Although the road to true love never runs smooth, with these two headstrong romantics holding the reins, love’s journey is as bumpy as a surrey ride down a country road. That they will succeed in making a new life together we have no doubt, and that this new life will begin in a brand-new state provides the ultimate climax to the triumphant Oklahoma!

Always… Patsy Cline Created and originally directed by Ted Swindley | Based on a true story.

Always…Patsy Cline” is more than a tribute to the legendary country singer who died tragically at age 30 in 1963. The show is based on a true story about Cline’s friendship with a fan from Houston named Louise Seger, who befriended the star in a Texas honky-tonk in 1961, and continued a correspondence with Cline until her death. The musical play, complete with down home country humor, true emotion and

even some audience participation, includes many of Patsy’ unforgettable hits such as “Crazy,” “I Fall to Pieces,” “Sweet Dreams” and “Walking After Midnight”…27 songs in all. The show’s title was inspired by Cline’s letters to Seger, which were consistently signed “Love Always… Patsy Cline.” Already a Highlands favorite, Always… Patsy Cline is a fitting finale to our 2019 summer season.

Foodie Film Festival October 25 - 27

G

et ready for a classic Highlands perfect-pairing: film and food. Guests of excellent taste are invited to dive into this delicious event. It’s the Highlands Playhouse annual Foodie Film Festival, October 25 thru 27, co-sponsored by Jeff Schenck and Rachel Friday, The Highlands Chamber of Commerce, and other esteemed Playhouse supporters. “The Foodie Film Festival is an exceptional event, combining a painstakingly curated film festival of both shorts and features as well as live cooking demos and specially selected wines and pairings.” says Lance Matzke, managing director. “It’s cinema uncorked, with signature events and exceptional cuisine guaranteed to entertain.” Wine discussions, cooking demos, and much more will take center stage. Last year’s event was sensational with top-notch vendors, some from as far away

as the Pacific Coast’s wine-country. Planners of this year’s fest present award-winning vintners and chefs who will serve such superb wine and food you’ll be convinced it flew right off the movie screen and onto your tongue. “Mmmm”s worthy of an Oscar. After the 2018 Foodie event, a guest declared “It was like wine, food, and film had a fabulous affair.” We’re certain she meant an affair-event, but you never know what you might happen at the Playhouse, so mark your calendar now for an affair to remember. Come fest with the best, and join us for a weekend that gets bigger and better each year! For more information call the Highlands Playhouse, (828) 526-2695, or go online to highlandsplayhouse.org. Summer Camp Children’s Theatre Summer Camp July 1 - 12 | Final Showcase Friday, July 12, 4:30 P.M.

C

ome on, kids, it’s time to take a chance and do something dramatic. And Highlands has the perfect setting to do just that. Dive into theater games, acting, singing, dance, costuming, stage direction, theater basics, and so much more. Highlands Playhouse Managing Director Lance Matzke says, “We’re very excited to bring our Theater Summer Camp back this year and help the next generation of Highlands Playhouse actors begin their journey into the world of theater. What will theater arts camp do for your child? “Our camp provides more than just acting and stagecraft; it creates a sense of belonging, as each camper brings their own personality and talent to the group and then everyone works toward a common goal,” says Matzke. “Both Artistic Director Bill Patti and I have worked as educators – Bill still does – and both of us have kids. The energy that young people bring… the look on their faces and how their body language and energy changes when they climb up on that stage… there’s a magic in it, and there really is no substitute for it.”

Patti says it’s all about engaging the creative spirit. “Our goal is to break kids out of their personal boxes, and to help them remember (middle school kids, particularly) that it’s cool to play,” he says. Drama camp doesn’t mean your kids are being pressed into an acting career. It’s more about learning how to present themselves, to speak and be heard, to carry themselves confidently, to overcome timidity, to fake it ‘til you make it (an important life skill), to relax under pressure, and to tap into their creative souls. Still, it can’t hurt to remind them that Millie Bobby Brown and Nick Robinson got their starts as kids in workshops and camps… and look at them now. The camp’s grand finale is a production conceived, designed, written, staged, and acted by the kids. It’s a heart-warming crowd-pleaser. Parents get to see the results of this amazing creative and educational process. It’s an awesome showcase that families will treasure and remember fondly as a cherished summer experience in their child’s life. For more information contact Highlands Playhouse, (828) 526-2695. Oscar Award Series

ach fall, the Highlands Playhouse celebrates the year’s most note-worthy films during its Annual Award Series. Dedicated cinephiles follow the year’s most intriguing films as they progress through the award circuit: starting with the SAG Awards and Critics Choice films, then navigate the Hollywood Foreign Press (Golden Globes), and ultimately reach the Academy Awards (the Oscars held each year at the end of February). Here at the Playhouse, we show as many award-nominated films as possible between October and March. At the end of the film season we offer a special opportunity to cheer for your favorite stars as they walk the red carpet in hopes of winning a coveted prize. “Our line-up is very impressive and should result in some wonderful opportunities to see movies that have been receiving major buzz. Most of our patrons say that they have seen more nominated films prior to the Oscars than they ever have before. Our crowds re-

ally appreciate the quality of the films we bring to the Plateau,” says Lance Matzke, managing director.” The culmination of the series is our Oscar Party, hosted by the Playhouse along with support from our friends Satulah Mountain Brewing Company, Cosper Flowers, Chocolate Heaven/ Cake Bar, and other generous supporters of the Arts. Guests are encouraged to dress to the nines for a walk down the red carpet for their close-up, Mr. DeMille. Everybody gets to be a star this special night. Last year Matzke live-streamed the red-carpet arrivals and screened a disc of trailers for each of the nominated films. Guests were invited to join a friendly competition to see who could guess the winners among the nominees for best picture, best actor, best director, and best actress. Those who guessed correctly were rewarded with gifts and prizes. For more information, call the Playhouse at (828) 526-2695 or visit highlandsplayhouse.org.
