Village Green 2025 Event Program

Village Green 2025 Event Program
The Village Green is literally The Heart of Cashiers. Not only is the 13+ acre park geographically situated in the center of our village, but it is also the hub for community events and gatherings.
With over 200 days of FREE community events happening yearly it is easy to see why The Village Green has become the heart of the village of Cashiers.
Begun by a visionary group of collaborators, The Village Green came into existence over 30 years ago in 1992 to preserve the heritage and integrity of our Cashiers Village and enhance the land for our community’s civic, spiritual, academic, recreational, and cultural activities. The Village Green will continue its mission to enrich our community through cultural events, family-friendly programming, and the arts for generations to come.
The Village Green receives no funding from Cashiers, Jackson County, the State of North Carolina, or the Federal Park System; park maintenance, operations, community events and improvements are funded by incredibly loyal and amazing individual donors, specially planned fundraising events, and community grants.
Our organization’s values revolve around Community, Collaboration, and Preservation. We look forward to expanding our existing
relationships and beginning new relationships with like-minded organizations, corporations, and individuals to meet our community’s identified needs.
Please consider a donation to keep the park maintained, expand programs, and events free and open to the public!

The Village Nature Series will begin at 5:30 pm on select Tuesdays of the month from April through September at The Village Green on Frank Allen Road. This series is sponsored by Cedar Creek Club.
May 27th: “Landslides in WNC” by
Jennifer Bryson Bauer
This talk will focus on the types of landslides we see occurring in Western NC, why understanding landslides is important and some of the resources that are available to better understand them. She will include stories from landslides triggered by Hurricane Helene.
June 25th: “A Tale of Three Watersheds” by
Callie D. Moore
Learn what a watershed is and about the three watersheds that drain the Cashiers area of the Highlands plateau. Where do the rivers go when they leave the plateau? Do they all contain the same species of fish and other aquatic life? This talk is meant to provide a basic understanding of streams and rivers in the Cashiers area, as well as threats to their quality and what we can do to protect them.
July 30th: “Monarch Conservation in WNC” by Joyce
Pearson
Joyce is a retired RN and retired Master Gardener, now devoting more time to monarchs, pollinator/monarch waystations, habitat establishment, and sometimes, restoration. She has been part of the volunteer Monarch Watch Conservation Specialists since 2011.
Select Dates | Through September | 5:30 pm
August 19th: “Experience the Mountains: The Four Seasons” by Bryan
Heller
Experience a live piano musical journey through the four seasons of the North Carolina mountains, featuring all original video and music created, composed, and performed by Bryan Heller.
September 30th: “Mindful Management of Common Invasive Plants” by Raven
Sterling
Invasive plants destroy crucial habitat for wildlife, trees, and native plants, while simultaneously threatening and dramatically reducing biodiversity. Demonstrating a holistic approach, Raven shares successes in mechanical removal and management of common invasive plants. In addition to dramatically reducing the amount and severity of invasive plant infestations that
treat the health and viability of our land, forests, and waterways, the long-term costs and consequences of the work are undeniably less severe. They serve, rather than harm, the overarching system that sustains life. Holistics practices improve soil and water quality, protect and restore rapidly diminishing habitat for a host of wildlife, increase biodiversity of plant and animal life, and create opportunities for native plant species to rebound and thrive. Raven demonstrates that mindful management is highly effective and improves the health and viability of the land and the life that depends on it.
Select Tuesdays | Through September | 4:00 - 5:00 pm

Thursday, July 3rd | 6:30 pm
Come one, come all! This Independence Day, come on out to The Village Green for an evening of food, music, and of course, fireworks. The annual “Fireworks Extravaganza on the Green” will take place at 6:30 pm on Thursday, July 3rd at The Village Green Commons.
Entertainment will be provided by the Caribbean Cowboys Band who have been entertaining audiences for over 30 years, as well as a fireworks show featuring over 1,000 colorful bursts!
Admission to the event is free, however donations will be collected to help with the
cost of the event. Many small communities have eliminated fireworks from their celebrations due to the costs of a large pyrotechnic display, but The Village Green believes it is important to preserve this patriotic tradition for the Cashiers community.
Attendees are welcome to bring picnics and coolers of their own. Due to the nature and size of the event, personal tents and dogs are not allowed.
We hope to see you all there!

Saturday, October 4th | 10:00 am
The Blessing of the Animals is a tradition in the Cashiers community started by the Church of the Good Shepherd. Cashiers’ area churches will observe this annual event at 10:00 am on Saturday, October 4th at The Village Green Commons on Frank Allen Road. Bring a chair to this gathering with animals that features music and prayer in celebration of all God’s creatures great and small. Each animal receives a special blessing. Attendees are encouraged to bring a donation for the Cashiers Highlands Humane Society. Besides a monetary gift, items like blankets, rugs, towels, Milk Bones, unscented cat litter and canned dog and cat food are
useful as well as always needed.
Animals must be leashed or otherwise secured and under the owners’ control at all times.
The tradition of animal or pet blessings is in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi’s love for all of God’s creatures. St. Francis, whose feast day is October 4th, wrote a Canticle of the Creatures, an ode to God’s living things: “All praise to you, O Lord, for all these brother and sister creatures.”
For more information, contact the Church of the Good Shepherd online at goodshepherdofcashiers.com or 828-743-2359.
Friday - Saturday, October 10th - 11th, 10:00 am - 5:00 pm Sunday, October 12th, 10:00 am - 3:00 pm

Shep Hicks & Peter Cahall
Cahall Garden sitting atop Big Sheepcliff offers visitors breathtaking views of Whiteside, Bearpen, Yellow Mountain, Black Rock and Bald Mountain. It also offers a magnificent landscape that John Warren and Amanda Gibson help design with owners Shep Hicks and Peter Cahall. Included in the design of the landscape is a multi-level garden that adds color and texture to their mountain-top location. They have creatively blended the native landscape with extensive perennial and annual plants. Massive terraces of local stone create appealing visual destinations which compliment the lichen-covered rock faces. Evergreen, fern and moss-lined trails weave through the abundant flower garden creating a welcome feel. Visitors do not
want to miss the woodland trail leading to a hidden retreat that will evoke memories of childhood campfires.
The property benefits from the combination of cool misty mornings and bright sunny afternoons that create the perfect environment for blooming flowers. The garden is filled with dahlias, crocosmia, hostas, knockout roses and several varieties of hydrangeas. It is a virtual rainbow of colors for visitors to experience and a 5 star restaurant for butterflies and hummingbirds to feast upon. All the elements of Cahall Garden compliment one another so well that it feels like it has always been here. The lovely gardens and the winding paths invite the visitor to go slowly and appreciate what they are experiencing.
Steve and Lee Ann DeCarlo, Owners Drew English, The English Gardener, Gardener
Nestled at the base of Big Sheep Cliff along the headwaters of the Horse Pasture River, this 9-acre property, affectionately called “Organized Chaos,” blends natural beauty with cultivated design.
Drawing inspiration from the White Garden at Sissinghurst Castle, the garden features a mix of perennials, annuals, vegetables, and flowering shrubs arranged in a rustic parterre layout.
Built atop the old Lancewood riding stables, the garden includes evergreen Korean Boxwood hedges, vibrant blooms like David Austin roses, sweet peas, dahlias, and rudbeckias. Rose-covered arbors lead visitors into a space with tree-form Buddleias, diverse border plantings, and umbrella-trained cherries.
The vegetable garden bursts with strawberries, cucumbers, squash, tomatoes, and herbs, while a greenhouse inspired by Parham House in England extends the growing season for delicate plants such as orchids and begonias.
In 2024, a dry-stone arch bridge, crafted by master stone masons, connects the residence to the surrounding woodlands. Native azaleas, rhododendrons, and laurels provide seasonal color, while globe-pruned boxwoods and dramatic alliums frame the home.
More than a garden, this property is a living work of art where nature and design coexist, offering beauty, tranquility, and inspiration year-round.
Walking onto this property you will experience the beauty and diversity of nature. It is a hidden gem developed by Mary Palmer and Hugh Dargan and now stewarded by the Wheelers who knew they had found a truly magical place as soon as they stepped onto the property. You will discover many special points of interest exploring Fernwood Falls from the formal upper tier down to the lower formal gardens and the waterfall channel that flows into the Horse Pasture River. In the formal gardens look for the many different plant communities that keep revealing new delights throughout the year. Emerging in the spring are flowers, including a wonderful green dragon and tetraploid daylillies that were gifted by master gardener Edmund Taylor. Mid-spring to summer reveals native and ornamental foliage trees such as Alley Cat, Flamethrower and Carolina Sweetheart Redbuds, as well as Summer Gold Dogwoods. Several varieties of
Japanese maples along with more redbuds and dogwoods are planted throughout the trails and ferns explode everywhere. In the lower formal garden look for the stone fountain that accents the view of Fernwood Falls. It was designed and gifted by sculptor Carl Peverall.
The glamping tents have an Out of Africa feel and are a unique addition to discover during your visit.
Fernwood Falls has become and will continue to grow as a real plantsman’s collection. All the trails and views from the gardens offer special vistas of the waterfall and the entire cove below. While you enjoy touring the gardens and trails be amazed at the accomplishment to bring design into a steep and lush environment while keeping it a natural paradise to be enjoyed by people and the creatures who find their home here.
Tiny Trail Farm and Garden is nestled in a quiet neighborhood on the Lance’s old lake where waters cascade over many natural waterfalls landing ultimately at the Horsepasture River. With Big Sheepcliff and ten wooded acres surrounding the property it has become a small version of “Brigadune”. It is a manicured and natural property that owners Patch Foster and Kevin Rowland carefully nurture as they create a haven for their bees, chickens and trout pond. They find the gardens are in constant flux as they try to adapt to the nectar and pollen flow needed by their honey bees. This requirement keeps them focussed on including indigenous plants, shrubs and trees complimenting what is already found in their forest. What drives their inspiration for the gardens is the need to supply the honey bees with a multitude of choices close to home. It is a beautiful landscape to enjoy. What you will find are hydrangeas which honey bees adore, along with sweet pepperbush and flowering trees like tulip poplars, sourwood trees and many others. Keeping the environment organic and poison-free is very important to maintain a healthy environment for the honey bees. It also helps to
encourage additional visitors to their gardens, including butterflies, hummingbirds and other pollinator bees. Patch and Kevin’s neighbors join in the effort and plant nectar flowers to help provide what the pollinators find yummy.
Each season creates its own gift for the bees, beginning with maple and pine pollen in late winter then followed by tulip poplars with their enormous amounts of large tulip shaped flowers. A summer visit in the gardens reveals a delightful diversity of hydrangeas, dahlias and St. John’s Wort along with simple plants like milkweed, phlox, clover and many “weeds” all for your senses to enjoy. For the bees it is a smorgasbord for making honey. Late summer will offer the cream of the crop, sourwood trees and sweet pepper bush! And the final flora gift are 8 feet tall giant ironwood flowers, joe-pye and low-growing thick sedum (aka stone crop flower). Plantings are dictated by the nectar and honey flow ending up with nine to ten months of bloom and its all amazing. The end result of all their effort is happy bees, natural unblemished honey and a remarkable treat for any visitor.
