Messagefromtheheadteacher
Here is a picture of two seagulls on a roof. I took the photograph because I was getting frustrated that some students a) clumsily drop scraps of food and b) complain about seagulls and their habit of defecating on them. I wanted students to make the link between these two events and realise that the one is leading to the other. As I was taking the photograph, however, aseagulldefecated onme. Iwondered lateronwhetherthethreeseagulls were all in on it - the two on the roof distracting me whilst the third one lined up their shot. Certainly, if I had my way the three of them would be lined up outside my office awaiting a very stern talking to. No doubt, however, there is now some law which precludes me from telling off seagulls (political correctness gone mad).
This incident followed one early on Monday morning where the security lighting outside my house failed causing me to trip in the darkness down my front steps and fall headfirst into a bin whose lid had blown open in the night. The security light helpfully came back on again in time to reveal my flailinglegstoanybodypassing. ThisisnotthefirsttimeIhavefallenintoabinsincejoiningHighfields School. Just saying.
All this has coincided with the departure, as communicated in last week’s newsletter, of my PA Jacqui Wheatcroft (I’m still grieving). As you may have read in the media, schools are not finding it easy to recruit staff and therefore for next week at least we will be withouta newsletter as we put inplacealternativearrangements. Please do keep an eye on Indeedor such recruitment appswe always welcome applications for jobs from parents/carers of current students.
Despite my own personal problems, this week the students have continued to excel. Highlights this week include a brilliant sixth form drama show on Tuesday night and a successful away game for Y8 football and netball teams who put up a very good defence against our closest rivals, Anthony Gell School.
Lessons have also been a joy this week. I particularly enjoyed a classroom sweep on Thursday afternoon in which I went from a lesson about oil in Nigeria - a lot more interesting than it sounds, as you can (not) see fromtheunintelligibleimageIhaveprovidedof a student book - and salsa in Brazil (as danced by Mia and some excellent Y7s- see left- they hadn’t started dancing at this point).
Oh, and here are someY7 students runningaround likelunatics on anorienteering challenge.
So, I think the overall winners this week are seagulls, bins and students. I will, however, be back to try my luck again next week. In the meantime, have a good weekend.

Revised Y11 mock exam timetable
In order to maximise year 11 teaching time amid further upcoming industrial action, some slight changes have been made to the year 11 mock exam timetable. Students will receive paper copies early next week.
National Apprenticeship Week
Mr Searson & Mr Waller
In PSHE lessons this week, our Y9 students have had an apprenticeship workshop delivered to them by Julie Allen-Morgan from local employer TAR-MAC as part of National Apprenticeship week. The workshops have had an emphasis on developing the students' knowledge around the route of apprenticeships ingeneral, and also details onthe specific apprenticeship opportunities that TAR-MAC themselves offer.
The students also received an introduction into what CVs are and how to write a personal statement, which the students then had the opportunity to have an attempt at writing themselves. This contact with TAR-MAC for the students is one of two interactions that they will have had with local employers in their Y9 PSHE lessons so far this term, with the other being with VolkerRail (local engineering company).

Your National Apprenticeship Week 2023 Resource
We have been working hard behind the scenes with lots of employers to create the very best National Apprenticeship Week resource we can!
Our aim is to help your students find out more about different employers offering apprenticeships to broaden their understanding of what is available.
This year our NAW campaign focuses on the theme 'Take Your Career To The Top' and we have created an interactive and informative session for you to run through with your students.
The session involves a game of ‘Apprenticeship Top Trumps’, which includes employers across different industries and sectors who are recruiting for apprentices in 2023.
Each top trump includes a profile about the company and the apprenticeships they run, helping your students to feel empowered in their future career choices.
You can either view the session online or download it as a PDF by clicking the buttons below.
