Messagefromtheheadteacher

It’s a good job that no one reads my bits in these newsletters as they really can be staggeringly dull. Lastweek’sreachedaparticularlowpointwhenIappeared tomakerecoveringfromafairlystandard cold sound like an act of heroism.

This week I am over the cold and am full of gratitude to be feeling a bit more perky. Gratitude is an interesting phenomenon, you know. It turns out that research suggests that gratitude can, amongst other things, make you physically healthier, improve your psychological strength and boost romantic and professional relationships. For this reason, we have been piloting with Y8 a Positive End Note (PEN) strategy where teachers in the final lesson of the day will prompt students to reflect on what they are grateful for.

It’s not something which comes easily to everyone and, of course, some people have more to be grateful about than others. Nevertheless, we find that most students can find something (I’m warm enough, I didn’t feel ill today, I had enough to eat) to be thankful for.

Of course, those in war zone really could be forgiven for not being entirely grateful for any aspect of their surroundings. In fact, though, we received notes and pictures from the school in Kiev to whom HighfieldsfamiliesandstaffsendallthosegiftsbeforeChristmas, allofwhichshonewithappreciation.

Mrs Walker, a Highfields member of staff and of a sponsor family wrote to me to say, “Olha has asked metoforwardonthesepicturesand lettersfromthe pupils in Ukraine who received the boxes from our community. In the end we were able to send 230 boxes, and they arrived last weekend, just in time for the Ukrainian New Year. They have been very much appreciated! Once again, thank you for your support with this project. If it's possible to put something in the newsletter to thank the school community, we'd be very grateful.

And as a final thank you of the week I wanted to register my gratitude to Nicole and Miss Fairbank who produced respectivelythisprepworkonJapaneseart and this wonderful ceramic fish, now adorning my window sill.

Have a good weekend and remember what they say…’gratitude makes what you have enough’.

Police and Crime Commissioner Survey

Angelique Foster, the Police and Crime Commissioner, has asked for help to make sure young people in Derbyshire are getting the opportunity to have their say on ‘policing’.

A Police and Crime Commissioner survey has been produced asking young people whether they have been a victim of crime in the past 12 months and whether they agree with the initial six priorities outlined by Commissioner, Angelique Foster:  strong local policing,

neighbourhood crime and antisocial behaviour,

rural crime,

road safety,

victim support and

safeguarding and driving efficiencies.

It also provides respondents with the option of suggesting other priorities they think should be included.

Responses need to be completed before the end of February 2023 and the link for students to complete is https://bit.ly/ListeningToYou22-23
