Messagefromtheheadteacher

I usually write these newsletters on a Thursday evening, but I have spent this particular Thursday evening at work hosting our wonderful sixth formopen evening. Consequently, it is now 10.30pm on Thursday night having started at 7.30am this morning it is very unlikely that anything interesting or noteworthy will appear in this newsletter ‘bit’ so…stop reading now? I’ve given the paragraphs headings in case you can’t be bothered to try and understand my confused ramblings.

STUDENTS ARE BRILLIANT

I managed to get around a load of lessons this week. Some wonderful learning seen but NOTHING thrills me more than seeing a student who has struggled in some subjects finally finding a good fit. Evie in Y9, for example, took to Computer Aided Design like a duck to water in her DT lesson and it was absolutely brilliant to see her beaming when the teacher highlighted her work.

IT’S ALL WORTH IT IN THE END

I was in the pub last Friday night enjoying what I felt was a well-earned pint when a young man suddenly took my hand and shook it vigorously. I looked him at him intently and then recognised him as James. James was my student some ten years ago and it’s fair to say that he spent significant amounts of time being on the wrong side of school rules. A decade later and I was completely overjoyed to hear that he is forging a brilliant and productive career as a plumber subcontracting to the NHS. He had a lovely girlfriend and probably the cutest dog I have ever seen (pictured, because James was too shy). THIS is why you put in the long days: it’s all worth it for moments like this.

WE ARE HIGHFIELDS

And finally, the sixth form evening brought out the best in our school team. Together students and staff created an evening which was a real celebration ofenjoyment, knowledge, enquiryand curiosity.Variousimagesincludingme in the red hat looking my age at the end of a long (but lovely) day. So…signing off for the night…have a marvellous weekend.

Autumn internal verification

Last Friday the first in the autumn series of internal verification sessions took place. This was for the year 10 Level 1 qualification.

Tansley Primary came to visit and enjoyed an hour of fun netball and football activities. They were ably led and our internal verifier, Miss Paly and Coach, Max Marshall, were on hand to observe. The young pupils from Tansley were eager to tell their waiting parents what they had achieved under the leadership of our year 10 sports leaders.

Move and Groove

On Tuesday our first session of the year took place at Darley Hall Care home for the year 10 Move and Groove leaders and it was a great start to the term.

The leaders played balloon games and boccia with the residents and joined in singing Vera Lynn war songs. Students talked to the residents who recounted their experiences of the war as children as part ofthe focus on Remembrance work students are involved with this week. There were some very moving accounts of being put on a train at 10 years old not knowing where you were going or who you would be staying with.

Ortus project update

The second session of the Ortus project took place on Tuesday with our year 7 and 9 students under the guidance of Coach, Max Marshall. The year 9 students were brilliant again in engaging the students in fun healthy activities.

Dance leaders update

Our year 9 level 1 dance leaders were working well with each other on Tuesday, writing up session plans in preparation for working with primary school students in the new year.

Time Girls group

The year 10 Time Girls group have been leading sessions for the girls all week. The group had a planning day back in October, planning benchball, and advertised these sessions for the girls.

The Time Girls project is a joint project run by Sports Leaders UK and The Youth Sport Trust. This is our second year with our girls getting involved in this new initiative to get more girls taking part in competitive situations.

The year 9 Time Girls will be doing the same next week in their PE lessons. In the reflection session with year 10 participants, they all agreed they had been more involved than their usual session, the music helped as they don't realise how much energy they are expending
