Messagefromtheheadteacher

I had a very interesting discussion in my Personal Social Health Education (PSHE) lesson with Y7 this week. In it we explored introvertand extrovertpersonality types. It turned out that I was one of those in the lesson who identify most comfortably with the ‘introvert’ descriptors. Students were a little surprised by this, but I explained that although I’m used to talking to very large groups at work, I am very shy in my personal life. We then got talking about how most personality descriptors are a sliding scale and that we are all a bit of a mix of everything. I really enjoy that lesson every week…

The extroverts in Y7 geography were in their element as they approached members of the public as part of their field trip to Matlock on Wednesday morning. It’s the first time I’ve been selected to accompany the trip and I loved watching the students interact with their community and understand features of travel and of flood defences in the area. As usual on this particular field trip a member of the public made sure they checked in with the teacher and complimented us on the behaviour of our students. This is them as they trouped down into Matlock Park and updated their surveys.

When you work with 1,309 students every day you become used to being asked the same question several times (‘how long to the end of break?’ etc). Sometimes I like to vary my answers to see what happens. I picked up an apple from the floor when on lunch duty with Y7 this week and looked around for a bin to deposit it in. I kept forgetting that I had it and so walked around absent-mindedly for a while which caused a number of students to ask, ‘what are you carrying that apple around for?’. I told the first few the truth but when the ninth student asked I explained that I was carrying the apple around in the event that I had to win favour with an angry horse. I walked off but felt immediately regretful as they stood uncertainly in silence, presumably wondering what they would have to offer in the event of a similar scenario involving them.

As usual I have been in and out of lessons all week. I got my hands on some killer cheese straws in Y7 food and in art I came across these etchings by Ellie (L) and Levi (R). I loved that lesson because ofthewaythattheteacherrecognisedthestrengthofthework(BTW I think they are both brilliant) but was also unafraid to challenge the students further. The discussion that ensued was all about choices of composition (notice the differing placements of the bottle in each piece). I love watching teachers work their magic.

Fundraising update – Ashgate Hospice

This week we welcomed Adele Taylor from Ashgate Hospice to our lower school site. Adele joined the Y8 assembly tothank the students for raising£1,562.74 for Ashgate Hospice from their sponsored walk in Y7 at the end of the summer term.

Highfields year 6 open event success

It was a pleasure to see so many parents/carers and year 6 students attending our open evening last week. Families were able to talk to staff and students, take part in activities and hear more about what Highfields can offer. Feedback from the event has been excellent with a number of parents/carers commenting they came away with from an enjoyable and informative evening with a real insight into who Highfields are and what we do.

Following the evening senior leaders have been busy taking tours around our lower school site on various days after school for families who signed up for these. We also offer a variety of transition days and activities leading up to students starting with us next September to enable them to feel a part of the Highfields community before joining our school.

The deadline for submission of secondary school applications is 31 October and we hope our open event enabled parents/carers to make an informed decision regarding progression to secondary school. However, if any parent/carer did not get the opportunity to attend and would like to find out more about Highfields we have a wealth of information available on our website to give you a feel for our school.

Life Skills Award update

AspartoftheLifeSkillsAwardstudentsneedtoattendatleast one wider curriculum club at school each week.

Current attendance at wider curriculum clubs has been excellent. PE had 52 netballers from Y7-11 on Thursday afternoon!

Y7and8tabletennisonaWednesdaylunchtimehasalsobeen a very popular choice and auditions for the mini musical were also very well attended.

It is wonderful to see so many of our staff and students getting involved in the community of the school and participating in wider curriculum activities.

The list of clubs available continues to grow with Y7 craft club, Y7/8 astronomy club and a GCSE business drop-in being the latest additions to the timetable.

Have you decided which club to attend yet? Have you tried more than one?

Inter-form events are also starting to take place. The sixth form took part in inter-form football at lunchtime this week, an event that was watched by many students in Y9-11. It will be the turn of Y911 next with inter-form tag rugby competitions being run in each year group.

Students in Y7 and 8 have started signing up for Starkholmes Bake Off which will take place in weeks 7 and 8 of this half term.

There is so much happening and many things to get involved in. Make sure you give yourself the best possible chance of gaining your Life Skills Award and get involved!!
