Message from the headteacher
I wonder if you saw the news story about the 53-year-old headteacher, Ruth Perry (pictured)…
Ruth Perry: Ofsted urged to pause inspections after teacher death - BBC News.
As a 53-year-old headteacher myself the story was of significant interest to me. I don’t really want to get into the politics of it. I just feel so sad that a professional who spent some 32 years trying to help young people ended her life in this way. It appears to have led to a much-needed discussion about how best to improve education for young people over time and I hope this in turn leads to a re-evaluation of the way in which Ofsted inspections work.
In my last school (Dronfield Henry Fanshawe) we had Ofsted judgements of satisfactory, good, requires improvement and outstanding within a five-year period. This is interesting given that the headteacher, status of the school, the students and the staff body all remained largely the same during that time
Anyway…Girls’ football at Highfields continues to be a massive area of developing strength. On Monday evening Y9 girls battered the mighty Tupton Hall School 7-1. Huge congratulations to the students and staff coaches responsible for this unprecedented win against the larger school.
In lessons this week I happened across a range of Y11 classes in final preparation for GCSE examinations. This Y11 is notable for the number of wonderful, funny, interesting students in the cohort and they are very popular with their teachers. Currently we are providing as structured approach as we can in terms of telling them how, when and what to revise. The idea is to make it as easy as possible for them to do a good job.
And in PE lessons, teachers were working with Y10 students to improve their badminton. Some students asked me to join in after I accidentally told them that I won gold at the Los Angeles Olympics (these things just come out before I’ve had a chance not to say them). I explained that I would love to play but that a wound picked up in the Battle of El Alamein had cruelly brought my badminton career to an end. They seemed satisfied …which they will be until they get a chance to search it all up later.
Finally, an apology to a parent at Starkholmes. I now realise that when you said, ‘have a good day, sweetheart’ you were speaking to your daughter and not me. I was on autopilot when I replied, ‘thanks, you too’.
Have a peaceful and, hopefully, springlike weekend. We are Highfields.

Community News
Highfields School uniform
A strict uniform code is implemented at Highfields School. Our school uniform is easy to source and practical, it helps to promote a community identity, encourages pride in appearance, makes life fair for all students when the same rules apply and reflects the high standards and expectations we have at Highfields School. Staff perform a variety of uniform checks and we ask that parents/carers support our uniform code.
The uniform code is designed to be clear and can be accessed on the following link: https://www.highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk/our-school/uniform/.
Parents/carers are encouraged to check with the school on 01629 581888 where they are unsure on any item of school uniform.
Trutex Direct and Parade Schoolwear both stock Highfields uniform. Orders can be placed on line both with Trutex Direct (https://www.trutex.com/) and Parade Schoolwear (www.paradeschoolwear.co.uk) if you know the size and items required without the need to visit a store directly. To assist with purchasing the right sizes Parade Schoolwear have produced a size guide (see links below).
Various information has been prepared on our school uniform and can be accessed on the links below or from the school website:

Communication with school – contact details
General enquiries
The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is reception. Reception staff will ask you what the issue is in order for them to help with queries or refer you to a member of staff who can. Please be understanding with your expectations as, unless your call is urgent or considered a safeguarding matter, the majority of staff will not be able to respond to you immediately due to their teaching commitments and a return call may not be until the end of the school day or following day depending on the situation.
Subject specific enquiry (subject teacher)
If you have subject specific enquiries, we ask that you contact the relevant subject teacher. If you feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the class teacher, this can be followed-up by the relevant head of department.
