Newsletter Message from the head Tuesday mornings finds me hanging around on street corners in downtown Starkholmes to check on students’ road safety as they cross from the church to the pub. This Tuesday I had three lovely encounters. One was with an ex-student who shouted ‘Morning, sir!’ as they drove past on their way, I hope, to productive and meaningful work or training. The second was with one of the wonderful parents who intervened in the recent medical emergency (what a lovely and inspiring human being). The third encounter was with a woman with a clipboard who told me that she was doing a recce prior to the arrival of our new lollipop person! My PA and I have chipped away doggedly at this issue for the past months and so we are thrilled that help for Starkholmes road crossers is on its way.

As you know we check on every classroom every day (on both sites) to see that students are meeting their teachers’ expectations. On Tuesday I managed to get myself ‘cold called’ in a Y8 science lesson.

Cold call is a technique which describes how teachers target questions at students who they feel may not have understood or whose attention may have wandered. I was the in the latter bracket because I was staring out of the window visualising an imagined building project. The teacher, I think, was secretly delighted that she had caught me off guard and gave me plenty of silent thinking time. On the board was a diagram showing ‘reflection’ with a few options as to angles of incidence. I made an educated guess, which, it turned out, was wrong. The teacher didn’t mind that and was, as usual, very positive in her response. On the understanding that she might cold call me again I made sure that my attention was fixed on the board and with a few minutes I had corrected my wrong answer.

The system works … even with tired and distracted 51 year olds.

I got all frustrated on Tuesday. I had spent some time on Lumsdale site involved in our sixth form induction event. Students involved in this were quite clearly destined for wonderful things and very pleased I am about it, too. Straight from there I went to Starkholmes site and encounter three Y7 students who are just not taking themselves seriously enough. I am thrilled that so many students at Highfields do so well in their studies but it’s just not enough for me. It will only be enough when EVERY student realises their own potential and starts putting in the work needed to realise it.

Everyone tells me that this is impossible and that a student’s success will often depend on a student’s ‘context’ as much as their school. When people say this I put my fingers in my ears and hum a distracting tune. I can’t help but feel that a truly astonishing school could transform the future of every single student and that the very least I can do is at least aim for this even if, ultimately, I fall somewhere short.

I would like to write more but it is late on Thursday night and my mind has gone foggy.

Newsletter Parents/Carers update Lateral flow home testing We have all relaxed over the last few weeks as Covid cases dropped. However, we are aware of a number of positive cases that are being reported in the local community and ask that you increase your vigilance.

Please ensure your child(ren) continue with twice weekly testing at home on Sundays and Wednesdays and report test results to the NHS and school – a reminder of the links have been emailed out to parents/carers today.

If your child has a positive lateral flow device test result, they will need to stay home and self-isolate for 10 days as per the government guidelines. If the result of the test is unclear (void) they will need to do another test.

Anyone who has a positive LFD test should get a confirmatory PCR test. The PCR test should be booked immediately either online or by calling 119 and should be undertaken within 2 days. Anyone with a positive LFD test result, their close contacts and other members of their household, should selfisolate immediately for 10 days in line with NHS Test and Trace guidance and while awaiting the PCR result. If the PCR test is negative, it overrides the LFD test and students can return to school and their close contacts can end their self-isolation.

Arrangements for students working at home during self-isolation Whilst isolating, students will be provided with work which we aim to align as closely as possible to our planned curriculum. Lesson resources and a summary of lesson content and instructions will be placed on Show My Homework. So long as they are well, students are expected to access this work and encouraged to follow their usual timetable as closely as possible. However, they should allow for the fact that lesson content might not be on Show My Homework until later in the day, as teachers may amend resources and instructions so that they line up with the lesson taught in school. Work should be submitted as instructed on Show my Homework.

Please get in touch with your child’s year manager if your child is having difficulty accessing work due to lack of suitable technology or is struggling during this time of self-isolation and we will endeavour to help.

Reminder: Year 10 parent consultation evening Our year 10 parents/carers virtual parent consultation evening will take place next week on Tuesday 6 July 2021 from 4-7pm. Appointments remain open until 4pm on 5 July for Y10 parents/carers to select 5 minute slots with subject staff.

If you have not already done so, please download, register and log into Weduc in order to be able to arrange appointments with your child’s subject teachers to review and discuss their progress.

Newsletter Derbyshire County Council - COVID-19 Support Payment Fund Details are given below of the Covid-19 support payment fund for families who have been impacted due to COVID-19. This can be a build-up of priority debt because their income has been reduced.

Reasons an award could be given: • Self- isolating (adult) – evidence would be required • Self- isolating (caring for child/ren that is/are self-isolating who is/are 15 years old or younger) evidence would be required that the young person is self-isolating • Furloughed • Self-employed • Reduction in contracted hours • Redundancy All of the above would be considered for an award, but would be questioned and may be asked for evidence in some cases.

If awarded, depending on the circumstances, they may be able to receive up to three awards. The amounts are : • £60 for a single person, • £80 for 2 people in the household • £100 for 3 or more people in the household The regularity of the three awards will be dependent on each applicant’s circumstances.

Newsletter School Sports and Sports Leaders News Beyond the Baseline Beyond the Baseline year 8 programme got underway on Friday 25 June with GB tennis player, Jade Windley, in school.

Primary sports Mrs Allen and Mr Molyneux led an afternoon of sports for South Darley Primary School at Darley Dale Cricket Club on Monday 28 June. The whole school took part in a carousel of activities that included archery, lacrosse, tennis, kinball and speak Takraw.

Girls Cricket Club Highfields girls after school cricket club took place on Wednesday 30 June with Derbyshire Captain, Lauren.

Activator workshop 1 will be held on Wednesday 7 July during lunch and workshop 2 will be on Wednesday 14 July.

Sports leaders training Mrs Allen attended Sports Leaders UK training for courses running in September 2021 for personalised skills and level 3 sports leaders qualification.

The final requirement before September is our attendance on 31 August for the ‘SLQ approved centre’ approval.

Newsletter Primary School cricket sessions Cricket sessions, led by Mrs Allen and Mr Molyneux, took place on Thursday 1 July a St Joseph’s and Wessington Primary Schools for half a day each.

Newsletter National School Sport Week 2021 – thank you A huge thank you from YST to you for taking part so brilliantly in National School Sport Week 2021: Together Again. Most importantly, we hope you enjoyed it!

More than 2,000 of you signed up and helped put on school sport days for more than 800,000 young people last week. The campaign was covered by CBBC Newsround and in local news headlines across the country, and with your help the official #NSSW2021 hashtag appeared on social media timelines more than 30 million times. From Pause to Play to Thank You Day via the Euros, International Olympic Day and your own sports days, we hope you found a way to make the week your own and celebrate the power of sport to bring young people back together after a year like no other.

Careers inspiration and advice from BBC Bitesize Explore BBC Bitesize’s brand new collection of free, online careers resources offering a wealth of inspiration and advice for students.

This new resources offer a rich collection of case studies across a wide range of sectors, linking curriculum subjects and the world of work: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/careers

Online careers programme for 11-18 year olds START is an online careers programme designed to connect 11-18 year olds with their future career potential.

The programme is broken down into sections on ‘world of work’ with a job search according to subject, skill or interest; ‘what to study’ about pathways and qualifications; ‘where to learn’ which views all colleges, universities, sixth forms, training providers and UTC; and ‘employability’ which has sections on work experience, work preparation including CV writing, covering letters and interview preparation.

There is also the facility for students to upload their personal statement and CV, so they can start to build their own careers profile.

Students can access the programme at home via the website (www.startprofile.com) with the student code they have been issued with – contact Mrs Turner for further details.

Learn Live - & Free resources Learn Live have a virtual pod within www.myfuture.org.uk (located within the careers and transitions zone). Within their pod there is a live streaming TV screen – they will be streaming careers linked videos from over 300 organisations continually through the platform, as an example the Royal Navy are streaming currently.

Linked to that within the ‘Welcome to the Careers and Transitions zone’ you will see a ‘more videos’ hotspot with over 150 pre-recorded videos that have been recently added from organisations such as KPMG, Barclays, Mental Health charities etc.

Newsletter Y11 students – New Decisionz Magazine Summer 2021 issue Decisionz new Summer 2021 issue of their careers e-magazine is available. You can read the e-zine from your phone, tablet or computer and, if needed, the pages are downloadable and printable. The new summer issue is packed with information and guidance to help you make the right decisions for your future.

The e-magazine includes 52 pages, with content ranging from advice on researching universities, higher degree apprenticeships and traineeships to an interview with a Paralympian from Nottinghamshire. The issue also includes an inspiring look at an LGBT+ role model from Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service.

If you’re interested in a career in Law and Legal, page 30 includes numerous useful websites to help you get started as well as a career snapshot which lists jobs in the Law sector and the various levels.

Newsletter UK University & Apprenticeship Search Virtual Fair Due to popular demand one extra UK University & Apprenticeship Search Virtual Fair is running this term on Wednesday 14 July from 12 - 6pm.

Thank you for reading this and taking an interest in our school and what we are doing.

We have thought about issues and concerns you might have – what is the school like? how will I find my way around? how do I buy the uniform? what will happen with the buses? We aim to answer these during this half term for you.

Activity work and information forms must be returned by the deadline date to allow us to process the information to support your child. Thank you for completing the information we have been sending out so far, we appreciate you doing this.

We have sent out our virtual tour of the school to Year 6 students that the current Year 7s found really helpful as it enabled them to learn more about our school site. You should also have received the pastoral profiles of people who will be important to you.

We will keep updating everyone through the school website, but really specific messages will come from Mrs Green, Year Manager for Y7 in September. Mrs Green will be your first point of contact and she will send emails through our Weduc communication system.

From September, the transition programme will continue with some very focused ‘year 7’ time and activities. The first day of school is a dedicated to year 7 students only - this is Wednesday 1 September. Students will have the full day to learn about school routines, have an additional tour with their timetable, meet their form tutor and do activities together as a form in order to get to know each other. This day is key for all students to ensure that every student begins their Highfields journey as smoothly as possible.

We will keep in touch to make sure students have the best possible transition experience in this climate. Our priority remains that students feel part of our community and to allay as many worries as possible whilst beginning to outline our expectations. Year 6 into 7 transition – Saturday 3 July Unfortunately, due to the changes in the government roadmap, we are unable to go ahead with the proposed sponsored walk for our current year 7 and year 8 students on Friday 2 July and all students will have a normal school day on this day. This means we are unable to host year 6 students at their planned visit to us on Friday 2 July as our students are now in school.

The Y6 into Y7 transition visit will take place on Saturday 3 July instead. We look forward to seeing you on 3 July - the timings of the day remain unchanged and full details of the day have been reissued to all year 6 parents/carers.

The session you have been invited to will give you the opportunity to meet key people in school in person so your child knows who we are and who to look for in September. The session will include an assembly from Miss Hughes (Head of Year) explaining her expectations and a few activities for your child to do so that they have a look around school and collect some information for you that will be useful. Children will receive a map of the school building and they will be shown their form room for September. We would advise you to view the virtual tour again prior to the visit.

Again, we apologise for any inconvenience the date change may have caused.

Admissions forms – this is one of the most important documents for us as we need to ensure we have all the relevant contact details of each student. Please can you ensure you have completed this form.

Parent/carer agreement - peanut free site – we have a student in school with a severe peanut allergy and strict avoidance of peanut products is the only way to prevent a life-threatening allergic reaction. We are asking your assistance in providing the student with a safe learning environment and require you to complete this form. We have a small number of parents/carers who have not completed this form. We will be emailing you separately about this shortly and would appreciate if you could respond to ensure the safety of this student.

Home school agreement – we ask students, parents/carers and the school to work in partnership and would like you to sign to confirm your agreement to working together in the best interests of your children. This form has now closed on Weduc so if you did not sign and still wish to do so, please contact Mrs Green.

Cashless catering – please complete the consent for your child’s finger to be scanned. Please note the finger scan is only to enable your child to be recognised at the till point to purchase food and is not used for any other purpose. If students do not have consent for the scan they will need to input a six digit code to the pin machine at the till point. This form has now closed on Weduc so if you have not signed and still wish to, please contact Mrs Green otherwise a code will be issued to your child in September.

Autism telephone support helpline A national support telephone helpline has been set up for parents/carers of children with autism.

Daisy Chain offer a telephone service to enable families to access advice, support and resources. The service is open to young people, adults and families of those affected by neurodevelopmental disorders.

The aim is to provide support and services for those who display traits associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), sensory processing differences, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The service is for those pre, during and post diagnosis.

Newsletter Free period products in school You may be aware that the government introduced the period product scheme in January 2020 to provide free period products for all learners who need them, as they are a necessity and not a luxury. The scheme was set up to prevent periods being a barrier to education for learners and help reduce the stigma around menstruation.

Highfields School holds a supply of a variety of branded period products available for students. All learners in school are able to access period products if they need them, for example, where students have forgotten their products, cannot afford products or in the case of needing products in an emergency. If a student needs free period products they can access these discretely from either school site reception or via their year team. Alternatively, parents/carers on low income or who are struggling owing to the loss of income due to Coronavirus can contact year managers, in confidence, to obtain a bulk supply.

Newsletter Weduc guide Weduc home / school communication tool Weduc is designed to improve communication between parents/carers and school. The platform allows notifications to be sent directly to mobiles of parents/carers with all messages and communication from school and where parents’ evening appointments can be made. It also allows access to information on your child(ren), eg details of behaviour, student timetables, reports and teachers to name a few, all in one easily accessible, user friendly place.

If you have not yet had the chance to enrol with Weduc, please do so as soon as possible to avoid missing important messages from school. We have sent out email notifications with individual enrolment codes to all parents/carers with details on how to download the Weduc app onto your phone/tablet and how to access the site through the internet. Please contact your child’s year manager if you require a new enrolment message to be sent.

We will be moving to Weduc from 1 April 2021. All communication will then be sent via Weduc and our existing communication system will no longer be operational.

When we need to send you an important alert, the Weduc app will flash up a notice on your phone screen - particularly useful when we have to notify you of emergency school closures, detentions and absences. We strongly recommend that you use this app and enable the notification system to ensure you do not miss any important information communicated home.

If you are unable to operate the Weduc app or access links from the notifications, you will need to log in to the Weduc website to check for messages and click into links.

Making parents’ evening bookings via Weduc If you haven’t already downloaded the Weduc App, you’ll need to do that for making parents’ evening bookings and accessing the parent consultation evening itself. The instructions for downloading the App are given below.

The Weduc App should be intuitive to use.

Once you’ve downloaded the App go to the home page and select "Access resources in the Hub". From there you will see the option for "Parents Evening Login" that will take you to the login page to fill in any details required to then book appointments for parents evening.

It might be that a teacher has already made an appointment for you, in which case you just need to make a note of the time.

On an evening in the sports hall, we are often able to grab a word with you on pastoral basis if you want that. Through the digital platform Heads of Year will be available on the evening, if you’d like to discuss something more broadly with them. You can make a booking with your child’s Head of Year in the normal way.

Weduc FAQs I can’t find my email enrolment how do I access Weduc?

Contact the school office and they will organise for an enrolment email to be sent to you directly.

How can I access Weduc?

You can access Weduc by: • downloading the app onto your smart phone or tablet. You can download it from the App Store or Google Play.

• logging in via the Weduc website at: https://app.weduc.co.uk/ It is easy to use the new Weduc tool once you have downloaded it: Weduc via the App • Step 1 - Once downloaded, open the app and click the enrol link at the bottom of the login screen.

• Step 2 - You will have been sent a unique enrolment code by letter and message from the school office - please keep this safe as you will need it to set up your account. If you have not received a code, please contact the school office .

• Step 3 - Enter your unique enrolment code and follow the in-app, step by step instructions to complete your registration.

Weduc via the website If you don't have access to a smart phone you have the option to use Weduc via their website, please follow the instructions below: • Step 1- On an internet-enabled device type the following enrolment link https://app.weduc.co.uk in your web browser. Click onto ENROL • Step 2 - Enter your unique enrolment code which will have been sent to you by letter and message from the school office. Then click onto NO. I AM A NEW USER • Step 3 - Enter your email address and mobile phone number, then click CONFIRM • Step 4 - On completion of step 3 an activation email will be sent to your registered email address.

Follow the instructions in this email to activate your account and set your password.

What do I do if I forget my Weduc password?

There is a link on the log in page (https://app.weduc.co.uk/) that will take you through to a page where you can reset your password.

Why can’t I reply to the emails from Weduc?

If you only get emails from Weduc then you will not be able to reply to them. They are notifications of a message that is waiting for you within Weduc, and you would only be able to reply to it there.

The 'sysadmin@weduc.co.uk' is a Weduc system address and is not monitored.

If you choose to use the Weduc app then you will be able to reply to messages within it.

Newsletter Coronavirus guidance Advice if students/staff display symptoms of coronavirus (Covid-19) If your child develops symptoms of Covid-19, they must not come to school and should remain at home for 10 days from the date when their symptoms appeared. Anyone with symptoms will be eligible for testing and this can be arranged via https://www.nhs.uk/ask-for-a-coronavirus-test or by calling 119.

All other household members who remain well, must stay at home and not leave the house for 10 days. This includes anyone in your ‘Support Bubble’.

Household members should not go to work, school or public areas and exercise should be taken within the home.

If you require help with buying groceries, other shopping or picking up medication, or walking a dog, you should ask friends or family. Alternatively, you can order your shopping online and medication by phone or online.

Household members staying at home for 10 days will greatly reduce the overall amount of infection the household could pass on to others in the community. If you are able, move any vulnerable individuals (such as the elderly and those with underlying health conditions) out of your home, to stay with friends or family for the duration of the home isolation period.

Symptoms The most common symptoms of coronavirus (Covid-19) are recent onset of: • a new continuous cough(this is defined as coughing a lot for more than an hour, or have three or more coughing episodes in 24 hours), • a high temperature (above 37.8C), • a loss of, or change in, your normal sense of taste or smell (anosmia) For most people, coronavirus (Covid-19) will be a mild illness. If your child does develop symptoms, you can seek advice from the nhs.uk website: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/check-if-you-have-coronavirus-symptoms/.

If you are concerned about your child’s symptoms, or they are worsening you can seek advice from NHS 111 at https://111.nhs.uk/ or by phoning 111.

How to stop Covid-19 spreading There are things you can do to help reduce the risk of you and anyone you live with getting ill with Covid-19 – Do: • wash your hands with soap and water often – do this for at least 20 seconds • use hand sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available • wash your hands as soon as you get home • cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when you cough or sneeze • put used tissues in the bin immediately and wash your hands afterwards.

Newsletter Notifying school of a positive Covid-19 case We required the following key information from parents/carers when notifying school of a positive Covid-19 test: • the date symptoms started • the date the test was taken • the date the result was received • the names of ‘close contacts’ of the student during social times at school and any students they have spent time with as close contacts after school • the number of the bus if the student caught a bus to/from school.

A close contact is: • a person who has had face to face contact within one metre of the individual testing positive • contact within one metre for one minute or longer without face to face contact • someone who has been within 2 metres for more than 15 minutes • a person who has travelled in a small vehicle with the individual testing positive, or near them on a large vehicle or plane.

School then checks lesson seating plans to work out how many close contacts there are from lessons, identifying any students who have sat within 2m of the individual testing positive in any lessons during their contagious time prior to developing symptoms. Individual classrooms are then checked manually to see where the desks are and how much room there is.

Once this information is obtained school contacts Public Health England school helpline who take the details. If there is only one case in a year group and if school are confident we have identified all close contacts we only need to ask those students to stay off school and to self-isolate for 10 days.

School informs the Local Education Authority and the school nursing team.

If there is more than one case in a year group, or there is uncertainty around close contacts, then school receives a call back from East Midlands Public Health. They go through all of the information, contact parents/carers where there are positive cases and review the school’s risk assessment. East Midlands Public Health then give school advice on what steps to take next.

It is really important that parents/carers keep children in their home if they test positive or are asked to self-isolate.

It is key that parents/carers know where their children are and who they are with so close contacts can easily be traced.

Unless there is a really urgent situation (such as urgent first aid) staff need to keep 2m away from students and other staff so they are not classed as close contacts.

It is key to understand that if you are a close contact and take a test, even if the result is negative, you have to self-isolate for the full 10 days.

Public Health provide school with a template latter to send home to all parents/carers and a different letter for parents/carers of close contacts. We take on board all advice that Public Health give us.

Newsletter Work set for students who are self-isolating Whilst isolating, students will be provided with work which we aim to align as closely as possible to our planned curriculum. Lesson resources and a summary of lesson content and instructions will be placed on Show My Homework. So long as they are well, students are expected to access this work and encouraged to follow their usual timetable as closely as possible. However, they should allow for the fact that lesson content might not be on Show My Homework until later in the day, as teachers may amend resources and instructions so that they line up with the lesson taught in school. Work should be submitted as instructed on Show my Homework.

We are aware that students will be deeply upset at missing school. Please contact your child’s year manager if your child is having difficulty accessing work due to lack of suitable technology or is struggling during this time of self-isolation and we will endeavour to help.

A guide is given below as a reminder for students on how to access their school email account, VLE (virtual learning environment) and SMHW (Show My Homework) from the school website. Covid-19 home testing kit result reporting For students who have received home testing kits, please remember to test twice a week (ideally Sundays and Wednesdays), and report the outcome of all tests to NHS Test and Trace and to school through the links provided via recent Weduc email communications.

If a student has a positive test result, they will need to stay home and self-isolate. If the result of the test is unclear (void) they will need to do another test.

Newsletter From 31 March 2021, NHS Test and Trace reintroduced confirmatory PCR testing for positive LFD tests conducted at all assisted testing sites, including schools. This means that all staff and students who get a positive LFD test, whether at home or supervised at school, should get a confirmatory PCR. The PCR test should be booked immediately either online or by calling 119 and should be undertaken within 2 days.

Staff and students who had a positive LFD test result, and their close contacts and other members of their household, should self-isolate immediately in line with NHS Test and Trace guidance and while awaiting the PCR result. If the PCR test is negative, it overrides the LFD test and the staff member or student can return to school, and their close contacts can end their self-isolation.

In January, when the prevalence of the virus in England increased, NHS Test and Trace temporarily paused the requirement to do confirmatory PCR tests for positive LFD tests that were conducted at an assisted testing site. This followed advice from PHE that, when coronavirus (COVID-19) prevalence rates are high, the performance of LFD tests and PCRs are broadly comparable and expected to be indistinguishable when used at test sites, significantly reducing the need for routine confirmatory testing.

PHE and NHS Test and Trace have kept this pause under review. As prevalence of the virus in England is now low, confirmatory PCR testing will also help to minimise the chances of false positives.

Asymptomatic testing information for parents/carers with children at school Undertaking regular, rapid coronavirus (COVID-19) testing helps reduce transmission of the virus.

Parents/carers and other adults in households with children at school, who do not have symptoms, can now access regular, rapid coronavirus (COVID-19) testing. This includes childcare and support bubbles.

Tests are fast, easy and completely free. There are different ways for a household, childcare or support bubble to collect their test to take at home, twice-weekly (see link below): • through your employer, if they offer testing to employees • by collecting a home test kit from a local test site – anyone aged 18 or over can collect 2 packs of 7 tests – school cannot supply kits for parents/carers • By ordering a home test kit online – please do not order online if you can access testing through other routes, this frees up home delivery for those who need it most https://www.gov.uk/guidance/rapid-lateral-flow-testing-for-households-and-bubbles-of-schoolpupils-and-staff If you have any queries about the tests, please call 119 (free from mobiles and landlines).
