Newsletter Sports Update

Mr C Shirtcliffe (Head of PE)

Fixtures & Activities Quad Kids – 14 June 2017 The event will take place at Tupton Hall School in Chesterfield on Wednesday the 14 June at 4pm.

Students will leave lessons at 3pm to get changed ready to depart by 3.15pm. The coach will return to Starkholmes between 6-6.30pm.

County Boccia – 15 June 2017

Four of our Key Stage 3 students will be taking part in a Derbyshire County Boccia tournament on Thursday 15 June 2017 at Queen’s Park Sports Centre in Chesterfield. The event will run from 10.30am until 1.30pm.

Sports Leaders

Mrs Allen (School Sports Co-ordinator) Our Sports Leaders and Sports Apprentices have been extremely busy supporting sporting activities not only in school, but also within our partner primary schools and across the wider community.

Jamie Ingram (past Highfields student) Former student, Jamie, is a member of Derventio Excel swim squad. The 18-year-old won a silver medal at the British Swimming Nationals in the 17/18 years 100m butterfly. As a result, he was selected to attend a four-day British Swimming Male National Junior Camp.

Jamie says: "My British Summer National Championships places me as the fastest British athlete for

my age. I am training nine times a week in the pool, with an additional three gym sessions.

Over the next 12 months I hope to continue training hard, and bringing my times down to put me in contention for places on senior GB teams. I aim to produce large personal bests at World Trials in April, and nationals in the summer.

My ambitions in swimming are to go as far as I possibly can, and have no regrets about my training or competing when I ultimately come to retire."

In this month’s Derbyshire Sports Newsletter it was reported that in swimming, Jamie Ingram took the gold medal at the East Midlands Championships in the Men's Senior 50m freestyle.

Jamie is also currently working with our maths department supporting students’ learning and progress in maths across the school.

Newsletter Road to Wimbledon Tennis Tournament The Road to Wimbledon Tennis Tournament for Years 7 and 8 took place recently, organised by PE Apprentice, Mr Molyneux. The winning students were Jacques Eyre (Year 7) and Millie Ransom (Year 8). Both these students go onto the Derbyshire round now in June.

Association for Physical Education Quality Mark We were recently invited to apply for the prestigious afPE Quality Mark. recognises outstanding and innovative practice in PE and sport.

This national award

On Tuesday 23 May Rita Hesford came to Highfields for the afPE Quality Mark – we eagerly await the result of our application.

World Orienteering Day 2017 Wednesday 24 May was World Orienteering Day - what a fantastic day in super weather! Lower school saw 160 Year 7/8 students take part. Year 8 girls Elysia Ottewell and Danielle Bunting won the girls event and the boys event was won by Thomas Woodall, Ben Crooks, Matthew Buttolph and Tyler Brookfield.

The upper school event was run by British Orienteering coaches under the direction of Chair, Judith Holt. Six teams of five Year 9/10 students took part.

The school played host to other children and adults in the evening running three different courses in and around school grounds and off into Upper Lumsdale – 70 people joined the evening event. Will find out soon if the World Record was broken - it stood at 250,000 in one day taking part across the world.

Newsletter Bunting Cup On Thursday 25 May Highfields Sports Leaders were officiating at the 2017 Bunting Cup Football event at Cavendish Fields. On a scorching hot day, the Sports Leaders were tremendous as ever.

They remained focused and officiated extremely well despite some challenging conditions.

PE Apprentices On Friday 26 May PE Apprentices Jordan Spencer and James Bates completed the IT exam necessary to qualify for their Level 3 Supporting Teaching & Learning qualification.

The PE Apprentices then took a well-deserved holiday at half term.

Newsletter Parent/Carer Notices Outcome of Recent Ofsted Inspection As you will have seen elsewhere, the school was visited by Ofsted inspectors on 9 May 2017. The judgement of the inspectors was the Highfields continues to be a good school. On behalf of Highfields Governors, we would like to congratulate all staff on the outcome of the Ofsted visit. This reflects the continuous work to enhance all aspects of our work and environment and the close collaboration between everyone to improve the learning and welfare of our students. Just as our students’ learning is supported by teachers, teaching assistants and other learning support staff, so the environment in which this all happens depends on the work of caretakers, cleaners and catering staff, supported by those in a range of other support roles to ensure the smooth running of the school.

Parents and carers also play a vital role in supporting our students and the school, as do those in the wider community who support and encourage us in a variety of ways. As a community school we continually work to engage the school with a wide range of groups, organisations and businesses in our local area to enhance the opportunities for learning and other experiences of our students.

We would like to acknowledge and thank everyone for their support and encouragement.

Once again, congratulations to everyone on the Ofsted result. We are proud of Highfields, its staff, students and position in the community and will continue to work to take it from strength to strength.

Newsletter Rural Action Derbyshire Parent/Carer Information Evening (Self-harm) – 14 June 2017 at 6.30pm, Starkholmes As you will be aware NHS Figures show the number of children and young people self-harming has risen dramatically in the past 10 years. The number of girls treated as inpatients after cutting themselves has almost quadrupled since 2005. The sharp upward trend in under-18s being admitted to hospital is more pronounced among girls, though there have been major rises among boys too.

Highfields has seen a large increase in the number of students who self-injure over the last few years. This is a difficult area for staff and parents/carers to understand. It can be extremely distressing. Experts say the rise is confirmation that more young people are experiencing serious psychological distress because they are under unprecedented social pressures.

Young Minds (the UK’s leading charity committed to improving the wellbeing and mental health of children and young people) is concerned that children who self-harm and then turn to the internet for help could come across unhelpful information about, and even encouragement to continue, their behaviour.

We have been working with Rural Action Derbyshire to develop staff knowledge about self-injury and self-harm in order to better support our students.

In order to support parents/carers and to improve parents/carers’ knowledge, Rural Action Derbyshire are going to run an information evening at Highfields Starkholmes Site on Wednesday 14 June at 6.30pm. There will be a presentation followed by an opportunity to ask questions.

Your own child may never self-harm but they may have friends that do. This is an opportunity to come and find out more in a friendly and familiar setting so you can support your child with their own actions or with the actions of friends.

Newsletter A level Film Studies Film Premier – 23 June 2017 at Designate @ the gate

Have you always wanted to attend a film premiere or the Oscars? Well, on 23 June Hollywood comes to Matlock!

The Year 13 students will premier their A level film studies short films at Designate @ the Gate, Smedley Street. There are two screenings at 7pm and 9pm with the Highfields Oscars being presented at 8pm.

Tickets cost £5.00 for adults, including a glass of prosecco and £3.00 for children including a glass of juice. Tickets for each screening are limited and can be purchased from Lumsdale site school reception.

The evening is jointly organised by Highfields Film Studies Department and the PTFA who are currently fundraising to replace the curtains at the Bowler Hall and support the school musical.

Communication with school General enquiry (Form Tutor) The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is the Form Tutor. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the Form Tutor, this can be followed-up with the relevant Head of Year.

We encourage parents/carers to keep in touch with tutors by using the student planner. There is a space at the end of each week where parents/carers can write a note to the tutor.

Subject specific enquiry (Subject Teacher) If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the class teacher, this can be followed-up by the relevant Head of Department.

Parents/carers can contact us on the main school number (see below). Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can.

School to Home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence will be sent to parents/carers via email only.

Our aim is that only students’ Assessment Profiles/Data Sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home.
