Newsletter Headteacher’s message Someone once asked Spike Milligan, “why do people take an instant dislike to me?” Milligan, who was not fond of this person, replied, “because it saves time?”. I try to save people the bother of complaining about me by noticing my failings first and fixing them as best I can. Similarly, at Highfields we like, as a school, to spot problems early. We do this by commissioning surveys, by sampling our output and by listening to students and staff. This also explains why most senior leaders at Highfields are out of their offices most of the time. We like to do break duties and drop into lessons not because we are needed, but because it helps us understand the issues that students, staff and parents/carers are facing earlier rather than later.

Having said this, a lot of the feedback we receive currently is disarmingly positive. This example was received recently…

“Just wanted to say thank you. You are all brilliant and are doing a fantastic job in these challenging times. I particularly want to mention [teacher] who is [son’s] English teacher, as you are probably aware English isn’t [son’s] strongest topic, but you have encouraged and supported him and have been kind enough to leave some lovely comments for him, which I believe has made a difference in his attitude to the subject. [Teacher], you are fantastic … fabulous, if I had half your drive and energy I would be happy. We enjoy the assemblies. Keep going.” (From parent of a Y10 student) I am always energised by this kind of communication, but we also encourage families to get in touch where they are not as happy with the school. In these circumstances we will ALWAYS apologise where we have made an error and we will explain how we will try to resolve the issue. On occasions we will hold our ground if we feel that the error is not straightforwardly ours - there is nothing to gain from pacifying or mollifying people - it only creates an issue down the line. At all times we will try to ensure that any dispute is between adults. A good way to reflect how children are affected when they see significant adults in conflict is to imagine how passengers feel when they witness pilots falling out immediately before take-off on a long haul flight.

So, thank you for telling us when we have succeeded. And thank you also for getting in touch when we have made mistakes or got things wrong. We pride ourselves on responding promptly and we hope that we can work together to ensure that you and your child are happy with Highfields School.

Please do have a look at assemblies and HVLS to sample some of the impressive achievements celebrated. When I see all the images that come into school of your children’s accomplishments (food/cakes/work/set designs/athletic feats/acting and singing performances) I often sit down with my own kids and ask why they have not cooked me a nine course taster meal and re-grouted the bathroom that week. They then patiently explain that what I see from Highfields students are the combined efforts of 1,224 students and are not from one family. Excuses, excuses…

I do hope that you and your family have a peaceful half term.

Newsletter Parents/Carers Update ACTION REQUIRED: Weduc home / school communication tool Weduc is designed to improve communication between parents/carers and school. The platform allows notifications to be sent directly to mobiles of parents/carers with all messages and communication from school and where parents’ evening appointments can be made. It also allows access to information on your child(ren), eg details of behaviour, student timetables, reports and teachers to name a few, all in one easily accessible, user friendly place.

If you have not yet had the chance to enrol with Weduc, please do so as soon as possible to avoid missing important messages from school. We have sent out email notifications with individual enrolment codes to all parents/carers with details on how to download the Weduc app onto your phone/tablet and how to access the site through the internet. Please contact your child’s year manager if you require a new enrolment message to be sent.

During the week year managers will be sending out test emails to parents/carers via Weduc asking for acknowledgement of receipt to ensure that messages are reaching you. Year 7 should have received the first of these emails from Mrs Green on 9 February and the remaining year groups will follow.

We will be moving to Weduc from 1 April 2021. All communication will then be sent via Weduc and our existing communication system will no longer be operational.

When we need to send you an important alert, the Weduc app will flash up a notice on your phone screen - particularly useful when we have to notify you of emergency school closures, detentions and absences. We strongly recommend that you use this app and enable the notification system to ensure you do not miss any important information communicated home. If you are unable to operate the Weduc app you will need to log in to the Weduc website to check for messages.

Weduc FAQs: I can’t find my email enrolment how do I access Weduc?

Contact the school office and they will organise for an enrolment email to be sent to you directly.

How can I access Weduc?

You can access Weduc by:  downloading the app onto your smart phone or tablet. You can download it from the App Store or Google Play.  logging in via the Weduc website at: https://app.weduc.co.uk/ It is easy to use the new Weduc tool once you have downloaded it: Weduc via the App  Step 1 - Once downloaded, open the app and click the enrol link at the bottom of the login screen.  Step 2 - You will have been sent a unique enrolment code by letter and message from the school office - please keep this safe as you will need it to set up your account. If you have not received a code, please contact the school office .  Step 3 - Enter your unique enrolment code and follow the in-app, step by step instructions to complete your registration.

Newsletter Weduc via the website If you don't have access to a smart phone you have the option to use Weduc via their website, please follow the instructions below:  Step 1- On an internet-enabled device type the following enrolment link https://app.weduc.co.uk in your web browser. Click onto ENROL  Step 2 - Enter your unique enrolment code which will have been sent to you by letter and message from the school office. Then click onto NO. I AM A NEW USER  Step 3 - Enter your email address and mobile phone number, then click CONFIRM  Step 4 - On completion of step 3 an activation email will be sent to your registered email address.

Follow the instructions in this email to activate your account and set your password.  Step 5 - Log on to Weduc using your newly created login details.

What do I do if I forget my Weduc password?

There is a link on the log in page (https://app.weduc.co.uk/) that will take you through to a page where you can reset your password.

Why can’t I reply to the emails from Weduc?

If you only get emails from Weduc then you will not be able to reply to them. They are notifications of a message that is waiting for you within Weduc, and you would only be able to reply to it there.

The 'sysadmin@weduc.co.uk' is a Weduc system address and is not monitored.

If you choose to use the Weduc app then you will be able to reply to messages within it.

Virtual parents’ evenings 2021 - Weduc We are very excited about conducting virtual parents’ evenings via Weduc software over the next few months. At this time, it is particularly crucial that these discussions take place, so we request that you download, register and log in to Weduc at your earliest convenience. Only by accessing the Weduc app can you select an appointment for your child’s subject teachers to review/discuss their progress.

Our upcoming parent consultations are as follows: 

Year 12 - parent consultation 4-7pm Tuesday 2 March 2021 The year 12 appointment system will be active from Thursday 11 February until Friday 26 February for parents/carers to book appointments.



Year 11 - parent consultation 4-7pm Tuesday 16 March 2021 The year 11 appointment system will be active from Tuesday 23 February until Friday 12 March for parents/carers to book appointments.

We are prioritising some appointments for students who teachers feel would particularly benefit from a discussion during parents’ evening. Teachers will be booking in appointments for these students before booking is opened to parents/carers. For this reason you may receive a notification or find that an appointment has been booked for you. Please prioritise this meeting as teachers may be able to offer important and timely advice which will help your child.

Other year group consultation dates will follow when we understand a bit more about government plans around return to school and exams. We will be prioritising year 7 and year 10, who were scheduled to have a parents’ evening later this term. We have had telephone appointments with parents / carers of students in year 8 and year 9 who we felt would particularly benefit earlier in the year.

Newsletter REMINDER: Y9 Teenage Booster & Meningococcal ACWY vaccinations – Tuesday 23 February A reminder that the School Age Immunisation Service (SAIS) for Derbyshire and Derby City will be in school to offer all year 9 students the Teenage Booster (Tetanus, Diphtheria and Polio) and Meningococcal ACWY (Men ACWY) vaccinations on 23 February 2021.

NHS staff will be on site on 23 February from 9.30am and students should attend at their scheduled slot for their tutor group: 9CAH - 9.30am 9IL - 11.00am

9SLH - 10.00am 9AB - 11.30am

9JFG - 10.30am 9IR - 12 noon

A year 10 catch up session at 2pm will be run for students who missed their year 9 immunisation.

Students who this applies to have been notified and consent has already been received for Y10s.

The NHS team will be operating following socially distanced guidelines and the immunisations will be take place in the sports hall at Lumsdale with separate entry and exit points. Students will be asked to attend 5 mins before their scheduled time slot, arrive with a mask and queue outside the entrance to the sports hall where they will be met by a member of staff. Students are expected to leave immediately after their immunisation. If you are bringing your child to school on 23 February, the top carpark at the side of the tennis courts will be open for drop off/collection and students should walk down to the sports hall and wait to be called in.

If you have not already completed the e-consent for your child in Y9 to receive the Teenage Booster and Meningococcal ACWY vaccination, please do so on the link below. We have taken the decision to return to school one day earlier for the start of the new academic year (Wednesday 1 September 2021) and finish the autumn term one day earlier (Thursday 22 December 2021).

This ensures a smooth start to the year with the staggered start on 1 September, enabling and all students to be in school on Thursday and Friday, and allows an earlier start to the late Christmas holiday.

Newsletter Sports Leaders News Mrs Allen (School Sports Co-ordinator)

Sports leaders update Sports leaders working on their level 1, 2 and 3 qualifications have participated in Zoom calls this week. Well done to all Y10-12 students who are working hard towards their respective qualifications in these challenging times, there is some amazing leadership going on in their home bubbles.

Youth Sport Trust update Highfields School is part of YST’s Well Schools and discussion points this week have centred around the moral purpose of health and well being and what a ‘well school’ looks like for everyone.

The ‘Boys Move’ CPD Zoom took place this week with discussion around difficult conversations and the tools required for this.

Mrs Allen attended the FA Girls’ Football Project Zoom session for an update on starting the two year project.

School Sports Partnership update A Zoom update through SSP took place with Sport England on the way forward for the School Sports Partnership and year 10 strategy.

Empathy Week Global Empathy Awards - the Global Empathy Awards is a virtual event that invites students from all over the world who have produced outstanding Empathy Action Projects through the Empathy Week 2021 programme – follow the link below for further information: https://www.empathy-week.com/empathyactionprojects It is a celebration of the development of skills, ideas and solutions that young people have worked on over the course of 2021 and takes place in June 2021.

Educational expert judges will be crowning some students with the prize of the ‘2021 Global Empathy Award’. Judges will work alongside the team at Empathy Week to assess every Empathy Action Project that gets submitted in order to produce the shortlist that will attend a virtual celebration in June 2021.

Empathy Wall - the Empathy Wall is a space for students to share and celebrate their work with the world. Through seeing work celebrated young people can be empowered and inspired to continue.

Newsletter The Invisible Suitcase, Child Bereavement UK Based on The Invisible Suitcase by Ian Woodroffe, Child Bereavement UK’s new animation uses the metaphor of an invisible suitcase to show how we all carry our experiences and emotions through life.

Careers inspiration and advice from BBC Bitesize Explore BBC Bitesize’s brand new collection of free, online careers resources offering a wealth of inspiration and advice for students.

This new resources offer a rich collection of case studies across a wide range of sectors, linking curriculum subjects and the world of work: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/careers

Online careers programme for 11-18 year olds START is an online careers programme designed to connect 11-18 year olds with their future career potential.

The programme is broken down into sections on ‘world of work’ with a job search according to subject, skill or interest; ‘what to study’ about pathways and qualifications; ‘where to learn’ which views all colleges, universities, sixth forms, training providers and UTC; and ‘employability’ which has sections on work experience, work preparation including CV writing, covering letters and interview preparation.

There is also the facility for students to upload their personal statement and CV, so they can start to build their own careers profile.

Y11 students – Decisionz Magazine Spring 2021 Please follow the link below to the latest Decisionz magazine. This is a free online publication that provides a wealth of advice and guidance for students who will be looking to take on the next step in their lives post year 11. It provides advice about colleges in Derbyshire, how to make applications to college and sixth forms and information about careers.

Newsletter Learn Live - & Free resources Learn Live have a virtual pod within www.myfuture.org.uk (located within the careers and transitions zone). Within their pod there is a live streaming TV screen – they will be streaming careers linked videos from over 300 organisations continually through the platform, as an example the Royal Navy are streaming currently.

Linked to that within the ‘Welcome to the Careers and Transitions zone’ you will see a ‘more videos’ hotspot with over 150 pre-recorded videos that have been recently added from organisations such as KPMG, Barclays, Mental Health charities etc.

Unifrog Careers programme We have signed up to the careers programme ‘Unifrog’ which offers students careers advice, support and guidance. Students in years 10 and 11 have been emailed with the log on details for Unifrog.

If students have not received an email, they can access the website through the link www.unifrog.org/sign-in and click on ‘forgotten password’ to reset the password and log in.

Newsletter Work experience opportunities Unifrog Unifrog have added over 110 virtual work experience placements to the special opportunities tool as they recognise how difficult it is for students to secure work experience at the moment.

Students can also find paid-for programmes such as InvestIN's Future Doctor Programme.

The virtual WEX placements are all on the special opportunities tool.

You can find the tool in the 'Searching for opportunities' section of the Student homepage.

Once you've selected which country you're from, the tool asks which country you're interested in searching opportunities from. To find all the virtual WEX opportunities, select 'Online/ Worldwide' You then select up to 10 subject areas you're interested in and click through to the longlist. From here, you can create a shortlist of up to 10 opportunities. Your shortlist gives you information about what to expect from the placement and how to apply for it.

Warhammer Club returns (remotely)!

Highfields School's weekly Warhammer Club returned on 3 February at 1pm. Sessions last for 30 minutes, and utilise Microsoft Teams, which will allow students to show off their painting skills via video-based chat.

If you have not attended Warhammer Club before, but you would like to join in, you are more than welcome. Our regular members will be able to explain to you why it is a fun hobby for people of all ages to enjoy.

Newsletter Support and resources available Families Accessing Free School Meals During this third national lockdown the government are not offering the national free school meal voucher scheme and schools are offering out hampers to families who usually have free school meals.

We are preparing hampers with enough food in for a fortnight. If you would like a hamper, or have a query regarding hampers, please email Kerry Alcock (kalcock@highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk) if you have not already done so.

Hampers will be available for collection in the Bowler Hall at Starkholmes on Tuesdays. Please ensure you wear a suitable face mask and maintain social distancing when on the school site to collect hampers.

Free School Meal Criteria Families could qualify for free school meals if meeting the following criteria:  Universal Credit, provided there is an annual net earned income not exceeding £7,400 (£616.67 per month)  Income Support  Income-based Jobseekers Allowance  Income-related Employment and Support Allowance  support under Part 6 of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999  the guarantee element of State Pension Credit  Child Tax Credit (provided you’re not also entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual gross income of no more than £16,190) as assessed by HMRC  Working Tax Credit run-on (paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit) Universal Credit has begun to be rolled out in Derbyshire and will affect all areas of Derbyshire by the end of 2022 - full details are available on Derbyshire County Council’s website https://www.derbyshire.gov.uk/social-health/adult-care-and-wellbeing/benefits-debt-and-legalmatters/welfare-benefits/universal-credit/universal-credit.aspx Young people age 16 to 18 who receive the benefits or tax credits in their own right are also entitled to receive free school meals. Newsletter Financial help from the ‘We Are Highfields Fund’ We have reopened the We Are Highfields fund that we set up during the last lockdown to support Highfields families affected by the Covid-19 outbreak to pay bills and get connectivity. Please pass these details on to anyone who may need help but does not access school emails or the newsletter.

Application forms for the We Are Highfields Fund can be requested from the finance office either by email (finance@highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk); can be completed over the phone where you will be asked few simple questions to check eligibility (01629 832325); through your child’s year manager or the school website: https://www.highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/WeAreHighfieldsApplication.docx This is a hardship grant and is considered on a case by case basis. This grant scheme will be paid out until funds are exhausted. To be eligible you must be a parent/carer of a students at Highfields School and have savings of less than £1,000 per person or £2,000 for a family or couple (including rolling bank balance).

Highfields In School Support (HISS) - Emergency Childcare If you wish your child to attend school because they meet the criteria previously issued, please email lleverton@highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk by Friday of each week and specify the details of the days and times of the following week that emergency childcare is required.

Any students attending should bring packed lunch/snacks and are required to wear a mask when on the school sites. Mrs Leverton will confirm details to families individually.

Newsletter Coronavirus guidance Advice if students (and staff) display symptoms of coronavirus (Covid-19) If your child develops symptoms of Covid-19, they must not come to school and should remain at home for 10 days from the date when their symptoms appeared. Anyone with symptoms will be eligible for testing and this can be arranged via https://www.nhs.uk/ask-for-a-coronavirus-test or by calling 119.

All other household members who remain well, must stay at home and not leave the house for 10 days (this replaces the previous 14 day period as announced on 14.12.20). This includes anyone in your ‘Support Bubble’.

Household members should not go to work, school or public areas and exercise should be taken within the home.

If you require help with buying groceries, other shopping or picking up medication, or walking a dog, you should ask friends or family. Alternatively, you can order your shopping online and medication by phone or online.

Household members staying at home for 10 days will greatly reduce the overall amount of infection the household could pass on to others in the community.

If you are able, move any vulnerable individuals (such as the elderly and those with underlying health conditions) out of your home, to stay with friends or family for the duration of the home isolation period.

Symptoms The most common symptoms of coronavirus (Covid-19) are recent onset of:  a new continuous cough(this is defined as coughing a lot for more than an hour, or have three or more coughing episodes in 24 hours),  a high temperature (above 37.8C),  a loss of, or change in, your normal sense of taste or smell (anosmia) For most people, coronavirus (Covid-19) will be a mild illness.

If you are concerned about your child’s symptoms, or they are worsening you can seek advice from NHS 111 at https://111.nhs.uk/ or by phoning 111.

How to stop Covid-19 spreading There are things you can do to help reduce the risk of you and anyone you live with getting ill with Covid-19 – Do:  wash your hands with soap and water often – do this for at least 20 seconds  use hand sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available

wash your hands as soon as you get home cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when you cough or sneeze put used tissues in the bin immediately and wash your hands afterwards.

If students have these symptoms (without the temperature, continuous cough or loss of smell symptom), then they don’t need to have a test.

The decision as to whether or not they come to school or stay at home should be taken as you would do in normal times (they are not required to stay off school).

Where a child has a sickness bug, as always, they must be kept off school for 48 hours.

School response to notification of positive Covid-19 cases We required the following key information from parents/carers when notifying school of a positive Covid-19 test:  the date symptoms started  the date the test was taken  the date the result was received  the names of ‘close contacts’ of the student during social times at school and any students they have spent time with as close contacts after school  the number of the bus if the student caught a bus to/from school.

A close contact is:  a person who has had face to face contact within one metre of the individual testing positive  contact within one metre for one minute or longer without face to face contact  someone who has been within 2 metres for more than 15 minutes  a person who has travelled in a small vehicle with the individual testing positive, or near them on a large vehicle or plane.

School then checks lesson seating plans to work out how many close contacts there are from lessons, identifying any students who have sat within 2m of the individual testing positive in any lessons during their contagious time prior to developing symptoms. Individual classrooms are then checked manually to see where the desks are and how much room there is.

Once this information is obtained school contacts Public Health England schools helpline who take the details. If there is only one case in a year group and if school are confident we have identified all close contacts we only need to ask those students to stay off school and to self-isolate for 14 days.

School informs the Local Education Authority and the school nursing team.

If there is more than one case in a year group, or there is uncertainty around close contacts, then school receives a call back from East Midlands Public Health. They go through all of the information, contact parents/carers where there are positive cases and review the school’s risk assessment. East Midlands Public Health then give school advice on what steps to take next.

It is really important that parents/carers keep children in their home if they test positive or are asked to self-isolate.



It is key that parents/carers know where their children are and who they are with so close contacts can easily be traced.



Unless there is a really urgent situation (such as urgent first aid) staff need to keep 2m away from students and other staff so they are not classed as close contacts.



It is key to understand that if you are a close contact and take a test, even if the result is negative, you have to self-isolate for the full 10 days.

Public Health provide school with a template latter to send home to all parents/carers and a different letter for parents/carers of close contacts. We take on board all advice that Public Health give us.

Department for Education coronavirus (COVID-19) helpline The Department for Education coronavirus (COVID-19) helpline is available to answer questions about COVID-19 relating to education and children’s social care. Staff, parents/carers and young people can contact this helpline by calling 0800 046 8687. Opening hours are Monday to Friday from 8am to 6pm.

Covid-19 testing for students and staff We are working to keep our school as safe as possible. You will be aware that testing for those without coronavirus symptoms is beginning across the country using new, quicker COVID-19 tests known as ‘lateral flow tests’.

Along with the other protective measures we are taking, these tests will help students and staff to remain in school safely. Up to one third of people who have coronavirus experience no symptoms. By testing we will help to stop the virus spread and help to keep our school open as safely as possible.

The test is voluntary, but we would encourage everyone to take it. Students and staff will still be allowed in school if consent is not given for testing. However, if a positive case is detected and a child/member of staff has been identified as being in close contact with the person testing positive they will need to either have a daily lateral flow test for seven days or self-isolate at home for 10 days.

We are following the latest guidance and advice and aiming to test all staff and students who want to participate when they return to school – please ensure you have read the documentation and completed the electronic testing consent form (issued via email on Monday 11 January). If you require a paper copy of the form, please email info@highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk.

Newsletter Highfields School Governing Board 2020-21 Highfields School is fortunate in the kinds of people who have volunteered to become governors, each bringing a variety of skills and experience to support the school.

Highfields governing board has a strong focus on three core strategic functions:  ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction  holding the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its students, and the performance management of staff, and  overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.

We have taken the decision to return to school one day earlier for the start of the new academic year (Wednesday 1 September 2021) and finish the autumn term one day earlier (22 December 2021). This is to ensure a smooth start to the year with the staggered start on 1 September and all students back for Thursday and Friday, and as the Christmas holiday is later next year it allows school to break up one day earlier.
