Sports Fixtures Tuesday 7 March 2017 Highfields School are hosting the Under-13 Netball Tournament at Lumsdale from 1pm.

Sports Results Thursday 2 March 2017 Our Year 9 and 10 Netball Team played in the under-15’s County Netball Tournament at Littleover Community School in Derby. It was a tough tournament against some of the counties strongest schools. Our girls showed true resilience in the freezing temperatures and battled hard but were sadly defeated.

Mrs Allen (School Sports Co-ordinator) Our Sports Leaders and Sports Apprentices have been extremely busy supporting sporting activities not only in school, but also within our partner primary schools and across the wider community.

Monday 20 February 2017 Young ambassadors lead an assembly at Darley Dale Primary School - Well done to Emma Jerman (Year 12) and Chloe Talbot (Year 10).

Wednesday 22 February 2017 Chelsea Elliott, PE and School Sport Apprentice, leads a fitness circuit session for Middleton Primary as part of the level 2 award.

Any young person aged 16 - 24 can apply to become a PE and School Sport Apprentice for September 2017/18. Please see Mrs J Allen in school to apply.

Newsletter Thursday 23 February 2017 Key Stage 2 Primary School High5 Netball tournament. The Year 3 and 4 winners were All Saints Junior School (in blue) with Tansley Primary (in red) as runners-up. Highfields Sports Leaders did an amazing job as always as officials.

Friday 24 February 2017 World Champion parathlete, Steve Judge, led the Year 10 assembly and then spent lesson 1 working with a selected group of students.

Newsletter Jayne Allen visited PE Apprentice, James Bates, and observed him deliver a Sports Hall Athletics Session to Year 5 students at Middleton Primary School as a part of his qualification.

Jill Eaton, Chief Executive Officer of Sporting Futures, visited for a validation session of the group’s folder work – all are progressing really well.

School News Evening of Theatre – 9 February 2017 Mrs Bonsall

Highfields School has introduced a new annual event in its calendar: the Evening of Theatre. Held on a winter's evening in February at Highfields lower school, this event gives students something to work towards as they dedicate themselves to extra-curricular clubs each week. It has also offered our younger students the opportunity to build their confidence, perform with friends and get involved in a whole school event. So a mini musical was created; a shortened and bridged version of Matilda The Musical.

The Matilda cast was made up of thirty Year 7 & 8 students.

Charlotte Diggle, a Year 7 student, shone as Matilda with her strong vocal performance and engaging stage presence.

Starring alongside her as Mrs Trunchbull was fellow Year 7 student Charlotte Rodgers - creatively evil and scary, using detailed facial expressions perfectly. Isla Restrick (also Year 7) was a wonderful, friendly Miss Honey and showcased a beautiful singing voice, whilst Jamie Smith stormed the stage as chocolate-cake-eating Bruce Bogtrotter - his vocal skills are amazing for a Year 8 Student.

Another special mention should go to the incredibly funny Mrs Wormwood played by the very talented Maria Theakston, Cailean Tuite as Matilda's Dad who also gave a confident performance and Annabelle Walker as kind and caring Mrs Phelps, the librarian. All three students are in Year 7.

As well as the mini musical, the Evening of Theatre provided the opportunity to enjoy the work of another 65 pupils from upper school Drama Club, Musical Theatre Club and A level & GCSE drama classwork. Stand out performances included Year 12 student Sam Hall's, who sang 'Stars' from the hugely popular Les Miserables. Nina Durbidge in Year 11 showcased a self-written monologue about the Hillsborough disaster that she recently got full marks for in her GCSE performance. Year 12 student Beth Harrison sang as Mrs Johnstone from 'Blood Brothers'.

Head of Drama, Emily Bonsall, said, "Our Evening of Theatre created a real buzz around the school and I was so impressed with the talent and commitment displayed by our students. I hope to

The day allowed students to work on their coursework all day and make significant progress in the practical unit. The atmosphere in the department was positive and industrious and we hope that students are inspired to do their very best up to the deadline of 30 March.

Highfields School Governing Body Update Governors’ skills and experience Highfields School is fortunate in the kinds of people who have volunteered to become Governors, each bringing a variety of skills and experience to support the school.

Meet your Governors This week our profile is on Julie Lane, one of our Co-opted Governors.

I joined the Board of Governors in late 2015. I also Chair the Finance and Resources Sub-Committee. I live in Matlock with my husband and two children, one of whom attends Highfields School with the other at All Saints Junior School.

My particular area of specialism is business and finance and I am a qualified accountant who works as the Head of Finance for a local social housing provider. I enjoy travelling and generally spending time with my family. I am also a committee member of the Matlock Green Scout and Guide Group.

Parent/Carer Notices Safeguarding our students - Child Sexual Exploitation As you are aware over the next few weeks in partnership with the Derby City & Derbyshire Safeguarding Children Board and the Derbyshire Police, we are screening a film to Years 7 to 11 and providing activities and discussion on the subject of the dangers of online grooming, as part of our continued commitment to educate students around child sexual exploitation.

Our first screening was to Year 8 students on Monday 27 February and we plan to screen to remaining year groups as follows: Wednesday 8 March at 8.40am - Year 11 Thursday 9 March at 8.40am – Year 7 Monday 13 March at 8.40am – Year 9 Friday 17 March at 8.40am – Year 10 You are able to view the film on you tube by searching for “Kayleigh’s Love Story”. Year 10 Parent Consultation Evening – 7 March Miss Gresswell (Head of Year 10)

The Year 10 Parent Consultation Evening is on Tuesday 7 March 2017 from 4pm until 7pm with the last appointment being 6.45pm – please ensure your child has made appointments with subject staff.

SEND Parents & Carers Coffee Morning - 8 March Wednesday 8 March from 9.15am - 10.15am at Lumsdale site. Parents and carers of students with additional needs are very welcome to come along for coffee and cake and discuss special educational needs and their child's provision.

Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiry (Form Tutor)

The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is the Form Tutor. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the Form Tutor, this can be followed-up with the relevant Head of Year.

We encourage parents/carers to keep in touch with tutors by using the student planner. There is a space at the end of each week where parents/carers can write a note to the tutor.

Subject specific enquiry (Subject Teacher)

If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the class teacher, this can be followed-up by the relevant Head of Department.

Parents/carers can contact us on the main school number (see below). Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can.

School to Home communication reminder In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings we are endeavouring to send future communication to parents/carers via email only from 24 April 2017 (following the Easter holiday).

Our aim is that, only student’s Assessment Profiles/Data Sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home. We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request.
