Y9 v Tupton away match

Mr Waller

The first full outing of the year 9 football team since at least March 2020 ended in heavy defeat against Tupton as we were knocked out of the ESFA Cup. Highfields faced up against an incredibly talented, physical side that had Highfields pegged back into their own half for the majority of the game.

Despite the result, there are positives to take from the game; most notably the incredible performance of Zack between the sticks - pulling off some of the very best saves I've ever seen in a school football game. Furthermore, the team understand that failure is a lesson and that this result will help us in the future as they will be able to draw upon the exceptional defending they evidenced to limit a very good Tupton side to just 9 goals, when they really could have had more.

All of the lads and myself are optimistic about the future games to come and are all confident we'll taste victory sooner rather than later!

Girls Y9/10 football away match

Miss Paley

Yesterday, our year 9/10 girls football team travelled to Lady Manners School in Bakewell to play in the English Schools National Cup first round. It was their first game as a team, but promised to be a competitively contested battle. The first half was evenly matched with both teams showing good physicality in their personal battles and trying to keep possession of the ball early on. We entered the half-time break level at 0-0. We defended very strong in the first half to prevent them scoring, but also played some brilliant phases of play in the first half, but unfortunately could not break the deadlock!

A special mention also to Erin for taking on the responsibility as Captain and showing amazing leadership and positional discipline throughout. You distributed the ball brilliantly even though I know this was not your favoured position to play! Thanks for doing a job for the team.

A few tactical changes and a reflective team talk ensured that we pressed with a more attacking presence early into the second half. We were quickly rewarded when Dixie showed some fantastic control and composure striking a long-range effort to guide it into the bottom right corner of the goal! Now, 1-0 up and we found ourselves beginning to dominate the possession and we were creating lots more opportunities to score; in wave after wave of attack. A good run down the right and precision cross found its way to the back post where Keeley showed a calm and mature finish to make it 2-0 from close range. Manners continued to be physical and battled hard to make us have to compete for every ball. Even so, our girls coped with the threat of the opposition and communicated brilliantly to stop Manners coming back into the game. Substitutions of fresh legs and eager players ensured that we kept the energy to press and recover until the final whistle. The work rate, discipline and desire of all the girls was superb! Erin, after being all over the pitch cutting out their passes, drove forwards on a great solo run with excellent skill and powered the ball home to make it 3-0. Maddie commanded her goal throughout and showed great concentration to ensure that she never allowed Manners to get close to scoring in the second half. Finally, we linked up with a great passing combination which found the ball to Ruby on the edge of the 16-yard box. Ruby dribbled past defenders with pace and physicality to create an opening to strike over the top of their keeper making it 4-0!

The final score finished with us being victorious in a 4-0 win to progress into the next round! Huge credit to Manners too who never gave up and who gave us a difficult game.

Brilliant work girls! I am so proud of each and every one of you who played in the squad yesterday, for your desire, commitment and teamwork! You were organised, battled for each other and represented Highfields in the highest regard. Your first match and first win as a team, super effort! Now onto the 2nd round! #WeAreHighfields
