SUNDAY 6 MAY OLD MUTUAL DAY

TRESOR A night of cultural wonder and awe! The cool Harare night was set ablaze by Tresor’s prolific performance! Each note was hit to perfection which sent the crowd wild. No words can express the atmosphere in the ZOL Main Stage as he belted tune after tune. A highlight of the evening was when he gave a befitting tribute to the great Bra Hugh Masekela ! The ZOL Main Stage audience took to the quasi-backing vocals role as they sang with enthusiasm his song ‘Remember’. The mood was truly festive and all in attendance had a night to remember; one for the history books!!!

In Shona there is a saying that goes as , “kura uwone” which translates to “grow up and see”. That is the only way to describe the life journey of a young adolescent who turns into a man in this theatre of life. The one-man show is captivating, rich and incredibly deep. Although set in the first and second Palestinian intifada, the themes explored; of struggle, unemployment, usefulness and identity resonated with the diverse audience in attendance. Ahmed Tobasi’s performance is genuine, raw, uncensored and heartfelt. The production balanced music, movement, comedy and thought-provoking dialogue to bring out a phenomenal production. A struggle or revolution can be waged with an AK47, a pen, theatre or whatever you have in you in pursuit of the true meaning of freedom. The standing ovation was well-deserved as Ahmed Tobasi is a truly talented performer.

improvised piece giving us a small glimpse into his skill and creativity. Throughout the performance, his magical fingers enchanted the audience as they danced over the keys. Mário was able to create sounds that were both dreamy and thought-provoking. It was a fabulous example of contemporary jazz piano. Don’t miss his next performance together with Cape Verdian singer/songwriter Tcheka.

HIGHLIGHTS HIVOS CONVERSATIONS WOMEN LEAD “The Women’s Movement has no timeline and starts the moment you are born and it doesn’t stop!” The Women’s Movement in Zimbabwe began way before Mbuya Nehanda into the Liberation War and into this year is the 80th year of the Women’s Movement which began in Zimbabwe in 1938 in Breaside police station under a tree which was known as the African Women’s Clubs by Helen Vera-Mangwende. They began by equipping women with greater know-how on how to manage their homes and creating sustenance out of what they had and have evolved into women in trade unions, media and other sectors. The conversation at HIFA on the Women’s Movement in Zimbabwe was held by Rita Nyamupinga, Charity Chaturuka, Dr. Nyangulu and Sekai Holland took the audience through the past, present and future of the movement. In every community there is a space for women to continue advocating. In order for growth there need to be mentorship of women and take the opportunities provided to them. The conversation was deep, but not inaccessible. The clarion call:was to seek out women’s stories in your family from your mother and grandmother as they have the knowledge of the movement and then interact with men as they play an integral role in the movement. In a nutshell, the Women’s Movement in Zimbabwe is in essence a community movement. The setting and timing of these conversations are paramount in ensuring Zimbabwe takes its place on the global stage.

SING YOUR WAY TO THE STARS These children were a delight to watch. They showed incredible courage in being able to stand on the Coca-Cola Green stage and sing and dance solo. They sang a wide range of genres showing off their talent. The area was full of people transfixed to their lovely performance, cheering them on.

HOPE MASIKE WOWS THE CROWD Her presence brought in a crowd that left not even a space to spare in the Global stage. Everyone was mesmerized by her performance. The sound of the mbira with the other instruments converged together with Hope’s voice and created a truly wonderful Zimbabwean sound. She is truly one of the greatest Zimbabwean artists and left the audience desiring for more.

VERA & SHELTON Up and coming artistes Vera and Shelton yesterday woke the crowd up to a wonderful jazzy morning in the Coca-Cola Green. Their mainly love themed songs are easy on the ear and got the small early audience clapping and dancing.

PREVIEWS ZIMPRAISE GOSPEL CHOIR Zimpraise is an awardwinning gospel choir that has toured the world. Their vision is to unite nations through praise and worship. WORKSHOPS The HIFA 2018 Workshops Programme would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to St. Michael’s Presentation Primary School and the Shadwell family for their support and generous loaning of various equipment for Studio 4.
