FRIDAY 4 MAY ZB BANK DAY

WONDER WOMAN LIRA WOWS HIFA

A truly magnificent night! Lira gave the ZOL Main Stage audience much more than their money’s worth!! The stunning songstress churned out hit after hit. One audience member plainly said that Lira’s set touched her soul and addressed the critical areas in her life! Another said Lira is hands down the official Wonder Woman after she sung her song dedicated to

the late Mam’ Winnie Madikizela-Mandela about being born free and what it means to be free! The quality of Lira’s performance left the audience begging for more and the request had to be obliged! The ZOL Main Stage was set ablaze by this true force of nature who poured her heart and soul into the evening’s performance . Just to add to the drama that was already on stage, as

her set was drawing to an end it started to drizzle as if the heavens were satisfied with her offering to the large HIFA crowd in attendance and as they left the main stage there was a downpour! For many in the audience Lira’s performance and showmanship will be the center of many conversations way after HIFA!

REVIEWS AND HIGHLIGHTS FROM NEW YORK TO HARARE – “BIRDS OF FREEDOM” AN EXHIBITION BY VICKIE FRÉMONT The art work takes you on a journey using traditional textiles and techniques of the various people’s of the African continent, into a spiritual world that touches your imagination. The amount of history and texture in this art work runs deep into the mountains and rivers of this vastly rich and complex continent. Throughout the exhibition there are African Guardians who travel the length and breadth of this land. At each interval the African Guardians change clothes and take you to a map of Africa with 54 independent counties. The map itself seems not to follow the boundaries drawn at the Berlin Conference’s ‘Scramble for Africa’ but rather instead follow the natural boundaries of rivers and mountains which speak of a different type of Africa in this era.

BOOK OF

SPELLS

This truly lived up to its name as an enchanting and magical performance by the duo Afield. Rebecca Fischer and Anthony Hawley took an artistic view to the words “colour”, “water” and “spam” using the sounds of violin, singing and electronic as well as visual art. This thought-provoking performance together with the atmosphere enhanced by the candlelight allowed the observer to drift in their own imagination. This multimedia performance entranced the audience while still allowing them to dream.

MADALITSO

The story of the African Guardians is told by the griot through the eyes of the birds of Freedom who see no boundaries. All the artwork is thought-provoking, highly engaging yet so simple. Art lovers, fashion lovers, culture lovers and lovers of Africa must definitely see this exhibition being held at the National Art Gallery above the Sanctuary Café. Feel free to make your way to see this fantastic art daily between 9:00-15:00.

“When the two men outfit introduced themselves as a band just before their performance, instinctively I became skeptical of their performance. However, Madalitso is for me one of the coolest bands ever.” So said one of the audience members enchanted by this incredible pair of musicians. Discovered on the streets of Malawi, playing a homemade guitar-like instrument called a babatone this duo has been touring the world wowing crowds across the globe. Their performance at Global Stage yesterday afternoon set thevenue on fire. Their songs have a lot of easy to sing-along hooks that are contagious to the audience.

Jane Parsons looks at material textures with an artisan.

Madalitso has a unique sound that leans towards jazz, and is distinctly of African origin. The upbeat transitions lean toward the Kanindo style of music that instantly compelled the audience to dance. The lead singer has a powerful voice and retained an infectious smile throughout their one-hour performance.

SYLENT NQO THE GUITAR MONARCH It threatened to rain. However nature yielded in anticipation of what this now world-renowned Zimbabwean virtuoso had in store for the Coca-Cola Green crowd.

in 2016 at WCOP in Hollywood. Sylent Nqo’ s music speaks volumes and leaves you yearning for more! Words can not express how full-bodied and mature his music is.

The magnetic pull off his guitar strings left the crowd mesmerized and showed just why he was crowned the Senior Solo Instrumental Grand Champion of the World

He traverses from one octave to the next with such ease while weaving audio tapestry as he scats through rifts. AND hecroons to boot!. There is no demarcation as to

where he ends and where the guitar begins as they are a single formidable force. His music speaks volumes and matches his larger than life personality. The crowd went wild as he sang Ndinomuridzira Gitare and had no option but to get down and dance. From then onwards, it was a full-on dance

party as he played original pieces together with contemporary and Zimbabwean classic hits that sent the crowd into musical ecstasy! Good music is meant to be shared and enjoyed and that is what happened at the Coca-Cola Green thanks to Sylent Nqo ‘The King of the Guitar and friends! HIGHLIGHTS

PE JAZZ BAND The young members of the Prince Edwards Jazz Band made the stage their own. Their fun and energetic sound brought people to the Coca-Cola Green area like some huge magnet. They held stage confidence and skill beyond their age. The audience was thoroughly entertained by the band. Zimbabwe’s jazz is in safe hands with these young artists performing renditions of yesterday’s hits.

THEATRE SPORTS This one hour long theatre improvisation is simply delightful. The setting of the acts was chosen by the audience and their acting brought on fits of laughter from all ages. The Elephant and Pineapple Café was packed with people eager to witness this hilarious on-the-spot acting by the members. Theatresports’ next giggle inducing show should definitely not be skipped by anyone needing a good laugh.

Judging by their performance today, the HIS Band is evidently a fertile ground for future Jazz stars.

SENZA

At their last performance for HIFA yesterday morning at the HIFA Global Stage, Senza got the early audience dancing and singing along to Portuguese choruses. Their title track to their first album – Independence Beach, inspired by a visit to the Cambodian resort got a request for an encore by the hyped up crowd. “I would normally only attend funky RnB and Soul concerts if attending a show of a band I don’t know, but this is good jazz,” remarked one of the people from the audience after their performance was done. It goes without saying that one of their other most raved about songs is titled “Guest House,” being a call to humankind to remember the simple things in life like travel, friendship and, of course, good music..

PREVIEWS WINKY D

BEATENBERG Beatenberg is back in Zimbabwe after previous shows that were well received by the local audience. Their eclectic bursting onto the scene saw them being first invited to Hifa in 2015. Today they are back on the ZOL main stage on the ZB Bank Day to set the tone for the weekend with their trade mark high energy performance. Friday 4 May, ZB Bank Day • ZOL Main Stage • 7.158.25pm

ANDREA VALENI

Winky D has lyrics that will continue inspiring you long after the track has stopped playing. His emotionally charged lyrics are the opposite of his soft spoken and sociable personality. His ghetto schooling was a prophetic reflection of the powerful lyrics which have become his life. Winky D’s early victories in Ghetto Lane Clashes earned him great respect amongst the fans who gave him the nickname Winky D from Wicked Deejay. With the help of Bartholomew Vera of BlackLab Records, Winky D has gone on to become one of Zimbabwe’s major international music stars, touring the world while never forgetting his roots. He has released five albums with many chart-topping hits. He is truly an icon for Zimbabwean urban/reggae music with nicknames like, “King of Dancehall”, “The BigMan”, “The Prophet”, “Mutumwa”, “Truthsayer” being attached to him. Don’t miss this performance by a Zimbabwean legend!

The Italian Embassy is proud to present maestro Andrea Valeri at HIFA 2018. Now referred to as the “Prince of Acoustic” and a “new ambassador” of acoustic music, Andrea is billed to perform 2 different themed shows today and tomorrow at the Theatre at the Standard Complex (which this year is at the Girls High School Main Hall). He is a world-renowned guitarist playing both classical and contemporary tunes both originally composed and uniquely arranged popular pieces.
