THURSDAY 3 MAY NETONE DAY
FANTASTIC NIGHT UNDER THE STARS WITH THE STARS AT THE 2018 CABS OPERA GALA
“If music be the food of love play on!” The much anticipated CABS OPERA GALA left all in attendance pining for more. It was a magical evening filled with romance, drama and musical surprise. The performance was captivating to say the least. It was the ultimate expression of human
emotion. For the first-time opera attendee, the performance quenched a thirst they did not know they ever had and for the seasoned opera attendee, it offered much needed refreshment. An added gem to the evening was the Zimspiration Choir trained by Kundisai Mtero .It showed that Zimbabwean opera lovers have a lot more to look forward to as the future
MAE SITHOLE: A WHIRLWIND OF REVELATIONS Mae Sithole’s performance on the Global Stage yesterday morning displayed the riches that Africa has bestowed on her children. The Zimbabwean born artist had the crowd on their feet, performing an array from her collection that bled for her nation and her people. Mae who is not only gifted as a musician also used the moment to teach the young children in the audience about the beauty of being born Zimbabwean and how they should all treasure their stories for generations to come. The guitar solo in the midst of it all had the
audiences stomping their feet in celebration. She ended her performance on an emotional note that left her and the audience in near tears as she poured her heart and soul out into her performance of ‘Ivai Nesu’ in honor of her mentor Chiwoniso Maraire as well as to celebrate every Zimbabwean in her plea to God to look out to his children. If you missed this heartfelt performance be sure to catch her in her workshop today at 2pm in studio 4.
of Opera is safe in the youngster’s hands. The Baroque 2000 ensemble complimented the cast of Hlengiwe Mkhwanazi, Lauren Decker, Langa Hallem and Mandla Mndebele under the masterful directorship of Craig Terry. The performance was relatable, relevant and riveting!
REVIEWS AND HIGHLIGHTS TAPESTRY OF MALAYSIA Tapestry of Malaysia brought to Zimbabwe by the Embassy of Malaysia in Zimbabwe showcased the diversity of Malaysian traditional dances. The dances performed by the acclaimed Aswara Cultural Troupe, a leading dance company in Malaysia exhibited the differences indance in Malaysia by occasion and region. Just like in Zimbabwe and some parts of Africa, there are dances for the harvest, traditional ceremonies and several other dances for different occasions. Malaysia’s multi-cultural and multi-racial heritage is most prominently exhibited in its diverse music and dance forms. The dances of the indigenous Malay, Orang Asli and different ethnic
peoples of Sabah and Sarawak are truly exotic and enchanting. As the Chinese, Indians and Portuguese settled in Malaysia, the traditional dances of their homelands became a part of Malaysia’s culture and heritage. Most of the popular traditional dances are a lively dance with an upbeat tempo performed by couples who combine fast, graceful movements with playful humour. The show, though new to almost everyone in attendance, kept the audience clapping and cheering throughout the performance. This is what HIFA is truly about – bringing cultures together to experience what they may not ordinarily have done.
Book Launch:
Kirk Helliker Helliker, sociology professor at Rhodes University, introduced his new book Political Economy of Livelihoods in Contemporary Zimbabwe which takes a sociological approach to Zimbabwe’s period of crisis. He lived in Zimbabwe for a number of years. The book focuses on the stories of the everyday population between 2008 and 2016 as well as talking about the start of the country’s problems in the 90s. Many of the stories come from former and current PhD students from Zimbabwe. The presentation sparked much discussion in the Elephant and Pineapple Café. The book itself is set to do the same in Harare homes and probably further afield.

This classic tragic tale is presented in a new and refreshing performance. The four members of the Hanlebards troupe held a positively delightful performance under the trees and were occasionally accompanied by music. The tragi-comic romance took place not just on the stage but in the entire venue.

The audience became part of the performance and was completely drawn into the new form of Romeo and Juliet. This Shakespeare piece was presented with a great load of humour and imagination. This is definitely a show to watch out for in their coming up performances. At the end of the performance though, the only tears present will be your tears of laughter.

BESSIE Words have power and true power is found when those words are verbalized. This highly acclaimed play came alive at the play reading due to the exceptionally talented local cast directed by Zane Lucas. The play explores patriarchy, the far reaching effects of Apartheid and the criminalization of mental illness. The play reading drew the audience into the worlds of two very different but similar women who acted as two sides of the
same coin. Adding to an exceptionally well written play and talented script readers, the audience had a rare opportunity to pick Rashidah Ismali’s brain around her thought process in writing the play and the issues tackled in the play. You have one more chance not to miss this highly theatrical performance which will be on the 3rd of May 3-4pm at the Studio @ Standard Complex.
HAPPY LUNCH TIME AT THE FIRST STREET STAGE The PSMAS First Street Stage in Collaboration with PEPFAR never disappoints! The Harare lunchtime crowd was sent into a frenzy by the showmanship of the College of Music and Hope Masike, the Queen of Mbira!!! The atmosphere of joy was palatable. The First Street Stage was also a hub of activities as PEPFAR had numerous stalls that offered information to passer-by’s on HIV/AIDS, Voluntary Male Circumcision, TB and proper condom usage. The show provided a break to the monotony of the work day and Harare residents in the CBD who had a moment to spare, enjoyed the great music under the gorgeous Harare sunshine. The Giant Puppets provided much amusement for both young and old in the audience as they danced to the Slavic Soul Party’s sweet jams, yesteryear hits mixed with crazy rap/reggae flows. The children especially enjoyed the Giant Puppets as they ran to see them up close and others clutched their mother’s skirts. It was a fun filled lunch hour. Be sure to catch the next First Street Show every day till the 5th of May from 12:0014:00 for some great performances and information from PEPFAR in the iconic First Street Mall.
ART &
HIGHLIGHTS
H.I.S. Band on the Coca-Cola Green
The young and up-coming band from the Harare International School yesterday served the correspondingly youthful crowd some wonderful jazz in the Coca-Cola Green. Though they started off to a shakily – the weight of the honour of performing on the same programme as other wonderful artists from all over the world perhaps understandably dawning on them perhaps - , they
KLUE
quickly gathered their confidence and overall gave a delightful performance that saw the audience singing along to some known covers. Judging by their performance today, the HIS Band is evidently a fertile ground for future Jazz stars.
This was a high energy solo performance by the multitalented Australian. The expert mix of sax, vocals and percussion over an electronic foundation infected the audience.
CRAFT Lovers of fine Art and Design flocked the HIFA the Global Quarter as they marveled at the artwork exhibited by various extremely talented individuals. The craft pieces showcased were a variety of art disciplines ranging from paintings, textile designs, relief prints, sculpture, bead jewelry and life drawing illustrations. Another amazing highlight of the art and craft center was the Giant Puppets. These are Zimbabwean performers dressed up in their handmade giant puppets made out of a variety of recycled materials. Most people were amazed by the size of the puppets that portrayed life like forms. Huge thanks to the Burning Man foundation for their support of this project. The Craft and Design market will be open throughout the duration of the festival and we encourage you to continue to come and appreciate and support and local and visiting artists showcasing their magnificent works of art.
All these factors resulted in a powerful and distinctive sound. In his own words “sitting is accepted but dancing strongly encouraged”, and the audience took to dancing in front of the stage. He played his own compositions as well as remixes. Klue dominated the stage with his energy and skill making it impossible to keep from performance left a feeling of energy in the air.
