MESSAGE FROM THE
Commissioner Fuentes Obtains More than $100 Million in New Funding for Roads
Dear Hidalgo County Precinct 1 Families, We have been hard at work in Precinct 1 and are proud to share with you our many accomplishments, project achievements, and improvements that have taken place over the past six months. I am humbled and proud to announce that I was recently elected as the new Vice-Chairman for the Rio Grande Valley Metropolitan Planning Organization (RGVMPO). As such, I will proudly represent our communities, Hidalgo County, and the entire Rio Grande Valley on this historic organization which oversees identifying and distributing funding for regional transportation infrastructure projects. I look forward to advocating and leading my colleagues as we continue to improve our regional efforts. Over the last few months, we have been working towards road and infrastructure improvements throughout Precinct 1. As you will see in this newsletter, we have completed several roads and are following our timeline to complete more. I understand how important our roads are and our goals is to ensure that we continue to fix our roads to provide our communities with safe, reliable, and smooth transportation. We also continue to tackle drainage improvement projects to mitigate flooding in our area. We have broken ground on several projects and are nearing completion on a few more. My team and I have been working closely with many local organizations to make positive impacts throughout our Precinct 1 communities and I would like to thank the many individuals and organizations who have partnered to help us in our efforts! I am proud to state that Precinct 1 continues to grow, and I am honored to work on behalf of all our communities to provide new opportunities and improve the quality of life for our residents!
In his tenure as Precinct 1 County Commissioner, David Fuentes has been a champion and advocate for soliciting outside funding for major transportation and road projects, ramping up construction and maintenance of county roads, and saving taxpayer funds that would otherwise be spent on these projects. As a result of Commissioner Fuentes’ leadership, more than $100 million in new funding has been allocated to Precinct 1 – this is the largest amount of MPO & TxDOT funding that has ever been assigned to Precinct 1. Also as a result of Commissioner Fuentes’ leadership, at the Policy Board Meeting of the Rio Grande Valley Metropolitan Planning Organization (RGVMPO) held on October 27th, 2021, the members of the Board elected Hidalgo County Precinct 1 Commissioner David Fuentes as Vice-Chair.
will assume the role of Chair upon completion of the two-year term of Chair Treviño.
“I am humbled and honored to have been elected to serve as Vice-Chairman of the RGVMPO,” said Commissioner Fuentes. “Over the last two years, we have made tremendous strides, progress, and have been awarded historic funding to enhance and improve our transportation infrastructure throughout the County and I look forward to continuing to lead these efforts,” he added.
The Texas Transportation Commission, which oversees the work of the Texas Department of Transportation, has awarded $2.1 billion to the Pharr TxDOT District for transportation improvements in the counties of Hidalgo, Cameron, Starr, Willacy, Zapata, Jim Hogg, Brooks, and Kenedy over the next 10 years.
Fuentes takes over the role previously held by Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño, who assumed the role of Chair upon completion of the two-year term of the founding Chair, Pharr Mayor Ambrosio Hernandez, M.D. Both the Chair and the Vice Chair serve two (2) year terms, with the Vice Chair succeeding the Chair when the Chair’s term is complete. Commissioner David Fuentes joined officials from the US and Mexico to celebrate the 46th Annual Tourist Day in Nuevo Progreso, Rio Bravo, Mexico. This annual occasion highlights the friendly relationship between the two countries and honors the Winter Texan tourists that visit the area during the winter months. Commissioner Fuentes was named “Mr. Turista” at this year’s event, which included festive and fun activities in which the mayors of Progreso and Nuevo Progreso meet symbolically in the middle of the bridge to celebrate friendship between the two communities.
